A couple of things I find useful here: I am a deep believer in assuming good faith. Patience, assuming good faith and time are often the most effective solution to many contentious situations. And my wise brother once told me it is rude to point out another's rudeness. This is an extreme version of comment on content, not on the contributor. "Correcting" a user's manners is often fueling the fire. It is rare that several people leading by example doesn't eventually calm things down.
