Whitby, again

Do you think that the article is OK to go to WP:GAN, yet? We seem to have tackled most of the points in the peer review. I'm away Sunday to Tuesday next week, but GAN doesn't usually work that fast.--Harkey (talk) 16:48, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

I also was wondering how much of the peer review had been completed and if there was anything left to do. I think that we have got most of the points covered so may be worth a try as it should not come up for a couple of weeks so we should hopefully be around when it does. Keith D (talk) 16:57, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Harvard referencing

I can't get my head round the referencing on the James Cook article. :-( Can you point me to a good example, please?--Harkey (talk) 16:23, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

I have not added the "ref=harv" to the {{cite book}} entries yet so that may be tripping you up. Take a look at Scarborough Castle which I converted from the style used on Citizendum to Havard type referencing. Keith D (talk) 17:27, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I think I get it, but have just had a "sip" of wine, so will look again tomorrow!--Harkey (talk) 17:38, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
I'm still struggling with this. I just made a right mess!! Is there an easy way that I'm missing?--Harkey (talk) 16:36, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Hi. I assume that you have been trying to set up the two Obeyesekere references. I have done these for you and added a link to them from the text. The problem was that the {{cite book}} template used author rather than first/last that is used by the {{harvnb}} template to create the link.
Hi again, and welcome back. Thanks for fixing the refs. You make it look so easy!! I'll try again....--Harkey (talk) 17:10, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
I've converted most of the book refs to harvard, I think. I'd be grateful if you would have a look, though, please. I was very unsure of what I was doing. The bibliography has some books that are not cited in the text, should they be made into "cite book" formats as well?--Harkey (talk) 16:01, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
I would convert them and move them to a further reading type section if they are not actually used as references. May be they were used in the past and the referenced text removed or possibly used but not noted in the text. Keith D (talk) 19:25, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

delinquent email

Keith I saw some messages from you to me about my modifying the Labour or Conservative party page but I did not know about you, or that such pages existed and never even went into such pages. So it may be someone impersonating other people. 80.42.159.182 (talk) 09:20, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

2006 FIFA World Cup qualification

I want to edit all the archive of 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification and 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification to this format:

2006 FIFA World Cup qualification – CAF Second Round#Group 2

Please help me to that.

Thanks! Banhtrung1 (talk) 13:45, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

You will have to explain exactly what you are trying to do as the new link is to a specific section. Also what do you mean by archives - if you mean all previous versions than you can just use the move tab at the top of the article (may be elsewhere depending on your skin). The move moves all previous versions of a page. You cannot change the content of previous versions of an article. Keith D (talk) 18:26, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Keith can you have a look at the Darlington page for me please. You reverted an edit earlier today from ip user 82.69.46.113 and I've reverted the same change by this user up to the 3rr limit. this has been going on for a good few days and the editor appears to be using several probably dynamic ip's 86.150.195.74 - 86.150.196.165 - 82.69.46.113 - 82.69.48.222. It appears like a bit of self promotion is going on from a guy called Mike Patterson, he has no Wikipedia page and the same ip keeps adding a red link to the disambiguation page, also a google search shows up very little. I've messaged the editor informing him that he's in breach of the 3rr but am not sure of what to do from here, thanks Fraggle81 (talk) 16:28, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

I have protected the page for a couple of weeks to see what they have to say. I have also removed the same link from the dab page as they are not for external links. Keith D (talk) 17:24, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
Nicely done, thanks. Fraggle81 (talk) 17:26, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Penosi afd

This Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Guido Penosi has expired. Is there a category for expired afd?. --Vic49 (talk) 13:21, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

No there is not a category for expired debates. There appears to be a problem as the debate is not transluded into one of the day lists so does not show up as still open. Keith D (talk) 16:58, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
I have dropped a note on Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion rather than just close it as the debate would get lost in the system. Keith D (talk) 17:08, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
They have relisted it here so you will have to wait for another week for it to get closed. Keith D (talk) 15:49, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing out the mistake with Peterborough, got a Portsmouth result in the wrong box! Cheers,  glennb28  t/ 17:21, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Stivians

I can take a lot of stick, but an editor faking my signed comments is too much. DuncanHill (talk) 15:20, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. I have given them an initial 24-hour block as they reverted after my 3 revert warning. Will have to see if that has any effect on their behaviour. Keith D (talk) 15:46, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the block, I have mentioned it at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Stivian/Archive.   — Jeff G. ツ (talk) 15:54, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
Looks like they are heading for an indefinite block. Keith D (talk) 16:59, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

need a correction

Hi, recently I moved an article to Konrad I, Duke of Glogów. I was doing some standard tagging and assessment so I was in a bit of an "auto mode" and when I moved these two I just copied the word as it appeared in the article. However, the word is actually misspelled in the article, it should be "Głogów" (as in Głogów). I don't think this is a diacritics issue since it already had one in the name. Anyway, I tried to correct it but because there's a redirect or something in place it won't let me do it. Could you move it to "Konrad I, Duke of Głogów"? Volunteer Marek  19:55, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

I have moved as requested. The target was just a redirect with no links to it. Keith D (talk) 20:21, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Volunteer Marek  20:26, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi,

Regarding the cleanup work in this edit: I can't see a source for this. In fact, I'd be inclined to label it a blatant hoax. Any comment? Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) - talk 19:02, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

I just assumed it was correct without checking. I have had a look and cannot find any online sources so looks like it was a hoax and so should be cut. 19:14, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Date Format

Hi, you changed the format of the dates I had put on the entry for Robin Windsor from eg 15th September to 15 September. I am not a native English speaker and was just curious if there is a rule on when to write formats in which way? I would appreciate your guidance. Thanks! LaTourelle (talk) 08:55, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

The usual rule is to use day first format for most articles apart from those associated with America where month first dates are used. Usually when adding to articles you can just follow the established format of dates in the article. There is also templates {{use dmy dates}} or {{use mdy dates}}, which put article into hidden category Category:Use dmy dates or Category:Use mdy dates, on some articles that indicate the type of dates to use.
On the subject of ordinals on dates we do not use them so 15th October should always be written as 15 October. For more detail see MOS:NUM. Keith D (talk) 10:22, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

"Catholic" vs. "Roman Catholic"

You can safely ignore the edits of the person who changes "Roman Catholic" to "Catholic". He is a long-term vandal who has been blocked numerous times for his activities. See here for a list of the IPs he's used. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:25, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. For the link. Keith D (talk) 21:27, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Spam

Hi Keith. Can you please advise me what the sensible approach is to this? I did revert them all as it looks spammy and I didn't feel they added something important to the articles; on the other hand I don't want to cheese off a new user so they may never come back ... what do you think? Cheers DBaK (talk) 22:03, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Probably a welcome note on their talk page and explanation of why you removed the links with link to WP:EL to show them about our external links policy. Keith D (talk) 22:10, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks very much for the advice. Best wishes DBaK (talk) 08:39, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Emley Moor

Many thanks for sorting this mess out. --Harumphy (talk) 12:07, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Percy

I do not understand why your revert from Harry Hotspur to Henry Hotspur Percy? The latter is not a name known to history, whereas the former is. For some reason (not mentioned on the talk page) there is a block on moving this page without admin support, therefore my cut and paste. Sir Henry Percy, Harry Hotspur or Henry Percy (d.1403), but not this cannibalisation of a formal and nicknames 'Henry Hotspur Percy'. Brendandh (talk) 19:17, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

I reverted it because it was done as a cut & paste move which looses all of the page attribution. If you want to move a page use the "move" tab or request at WP:RM but never perform cut and paste moves. The reason the move will not work is because the target page had history and was not a simple redirect to the originating page. Keith D (talk) 19:26, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Sorry about messing up your fix on the citation. I'm going to have my dinner now so I'll be out of the way for an hour or so!!--Harkey (talk) 17:13, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

I had not spotted the problem as I was away for a short while, doing something else. If you are thinking of getting someone else to copy-edit then I have used Malleus Fatuorum (talk · contribs) before if the guild of copy editors have no one available. Keith D (talk) 17:31, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Liberal Democrats and tuition fees

Hi there. This IP editor has been systematically erasing all references to Liberal Democrats voting on tuition fees. I see you have reverted a few of these. It seems to me his motivation is political in that the issue is embarrassing for the Liberal Democrats. What do think is the best of handling this? Nunquam Dormio (talk) 19:00, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

It may be best to revert and look at the information to see if there is any bias in the material that needs re-wording. May be it could be made more concise so as not to appear to have undue weight. Keith D (talk) 00:14, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Looks like some others have also reverted on some articles. Keith D (talk) 11:10, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

The information added to all and i mean all of the Liberal Democrat MP articles is uniform and NUS biased. The information should be on the Liberal Democrat page and not on each and every single Lib Dem MP. Adding it to every Liberal Democrat MP and only to them and in some cases having at the only thing they have done since the Coalition is ludicrous and gives unnecessary weight to a single issue. The wording being identical and added by the same user also shows they had an agenda to put the information there in the first place. All i have done is simply tone down the POV on the relevant articles where the information is notable such as John Hemming and Vince Cable and removed the uniform NUS biased information which is only about one vote on one issue which is better covered in the main article on either the Coalition government or the Liberal Democrats. Adding the info only to LD MPs and having the information identical shows the information was only put there to be political and push a certain POV regarding the LD MPs. It does not belong on articles for every MP.--95.147.53.59 (talk) 21:58, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

You appear to have a specific bias here in not wanting this information to appear and other information that you have removed on Liberal Democrats loosing their deposit on some articles. You have been reverted by a couple of editors on this so far and appear to be edit warring on this. Please do not continue to edit war on this. On the first revert I did I suggested that the information is relevant and should not be cut wholesale from the article as it was referenced. It may need trimming and tidying a little but appears to be relevant. Keith D (talk) 00:07, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
You should discuss on the article talk pages before any more reverts. Thanks. Keith D (talk) 11:10, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
I stongly suggest you see the discussion here which contradicts your arguments wholly and completly. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Politics of the United Kingdom#Liberal Democrat voting on tuition fees) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.147.53.45 (talk) 20:40, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Help regarding Hull Truck

Hi Keith,

Thank you for you message, please can you help me understand how I can update Hull Truck Theatres wikipedia page to be relevant as at the moment it reads about 12 months out of date,

Fylingdales

I saw you reverted an IP on Fylingdales who was trying to convert the "civil parish" template following the closing of the associated TFD. From my reading of the discussion, it looks like we needed a "type" field, so I added it to the "UK place" template. Is there anything else we need to add? I am planning on having a bot assist with converting the rest, but I want to make sure we have everything in place so I don't have to revert the bot. Let me know, and I will do what I can to make it happen as smoothly as possible. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:52, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

We probably need a second image field as the parishes do not use the push-pin map but fixed maps showing the parish such as File:Anlaby with Anlaby Common UK parish locator map.svg. We also have nothing for the governance - parish meeting, parish council or town council. Think we are also missing link to web site for council. If you are doing it by BOT then it would be good to convert the co-ords to OS ref and fill in the OS ref field in the template. Keith D (talk) 23:04, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
By the way Fylingdales is a funny as I was unsure what to do with its map as it has parts in common with another parish. May be a dual coloured map is needed here. Keith D (talk) 23:12, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Great, I will work on it and ping you when I have a prototype. In the mean time, I will rollback to the old version for Fylingdales. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:13, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
I also think that some have a list of settlements as well. Keith D (talk) 17:12, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

This title redirects to that section on the James Cook article. I have a new article of that title brewing in my sandbox which should be ready to move by Wednesday p.m.. (I still have to put in more refs --and complete the provisions section, if they are not to starve to death!!)

  • How do I stop the redirect?
  • If you have time, please can you check it over for daft errors?

--Harkey (talk) 22:13, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I thought that you had given up on Cook, I have been tweaking the First Voyage article. The redirect can be overwritten with your article by a cut & paste if you are not interested in the history. Otherwise it can be deleted and your sandbox version, with history moved across. I will take a look, though I will be away from Thursday for a week. Keith D (talk) 22:21, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
I've been reading books about Cook. Whacking great tomes they all are (and I have seven or eight). For the first time in my life my house is full of Cook books!!--Harkey (talk) 22:26, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Had a quick look through and appears OK, done a few tweaks on the way. Suggest you need a map at the top like on the first journey. Probably better use imperial, with conversion to metric, for consistency with the other articles and as metric would not be used then. Also the Rigby references are not linking in to the entry in the Bibliography section, probably because it needs the second author adding to each of the templates. Keith D (talk) 22:43, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
The last image needs a caption. Keith D (talk) 22:52, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks very much. I've been looking for non-copyright world map backgrounds that centre on the Pacific, rather than the Atlantic, to draw the route on. I am still having trouble getting the hang of Harvard referencing. I just don't understand the mechanics of it. I haven't forgotten about Scarborough castle either. I got the guide book then realised a lot of the article is modelled on it so to speak, so needs a big overhaul.--Harkey (talk) 23:02, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
I had forgotten about Scarborough Castle though I was wondering what is happening on Whitby as I prodded the reviewer to see if they could look at the GOCE edits to see if they were helpful and they said they would look but have not commented as yet. Keith D (talk) 23:08, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
