History of the British Virgin Islands
[edit]On 15 Feb 2007 you put the Caribbean Wikiproject banner on History of the British Virgin Islands and it was assessed (correctly in my view) as "start class". I have subsequently completely amended and restated it (I have actually been working on the replacement article since November of last year). Given nothing of the original article remains, I would suggest that it now be listed for re-assessment. Thanks! --Legis (talk - contributions) 09:01, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

DEFAULTSORT
[edit]If you are going to run around slapping the DEFAULTSORT: magic word on articles, you might as well pay attention to what you are doing, and not just copy previously missorted stuff as you did at Carlton Baugh, Jr. with the "Baugh Jr., Carlton" sort key. The Jr. comes at the end: "Baugh, Carlton Jr.". The comma and space are conventional between lastname and firstname, no clear usage has developed as to whether or not there is a comma as well as a space before the Jr. Gene Nygaard 05:17, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Hello there. I just recently saw a comment for a recent AWB edit of yours that said that there was a plugin for assessing articles via AWB. Re: Haiti-me
[edit]That is a list I made on a user page (I thought). It's just a list of articles I was working on and isn't supposed to be an article. I'm not really clear how that happens. I made a page like a sandbox page but that one has ended up in the article space. What do I do to "userfy" it? Sincerely, Mattisse 21:58, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- In fact, I still have the list in my sandbox, so I don't know how that came about with a haiti- sub and everything. It can just be deleted. Thanks, --Mattisse 22:03, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks! Maybe that is why I thought I already had it -- because you had but it there before I looked! Sincerely, --Mattisse 22:11, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
SatyrBot and WP:Caribbean to-do list
[edit]Two questions:
- You want the output to go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Caribbean/To-do list and Wikipedia:WikiProject Caribbean/Small to-do list, not to their talk pages, right?
- You're only the second WP the bot's doing this for, so the frequency is up to you. LGBT asked for it to be done nightly, and that seems excessive to me, but how ever often you'd like, I can do it :)

Account Creation
[edit]Hi,
I realise that your tremendous work on Wikipedia:Request an account must be quite repetitive and I apologise if this isn't the right channel but I did create an account about a year ago that I hardly ever used. I can not remember which email address I provided nor if the spam filters are on steroids.
I would like to know if there is any way that I could get access to my account again or even just know if not the email address at least the domain to which the automatic password is send.
I made a request yesterday on Wikipedia:Request an account which understandably has been rejected but I wondered if you could just give me advice.
I appreciate this might be unorthodox and I apologise for it but I would be most grateful for any help.
Ghaag —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 194.159.99.60 (talk) 12:08, 11 April 2007 (UTC).
- I really wish I could help, but once the password and e-mail has been lost, there is no way to get the account back. A long-term solution would be to create another account, edit a couple months under that name, and then request to usurp your old username "Ghaag" at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations. Note that your usurption request will be denied unless you are already a "reasonably well-established user", so get another account and start editing. Hope that helps, jwillburtalk 20:42, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Account Request
[edit]Hello, I requested the username Malson after trying to use the automated account creation tool. It said to us the WP:ACC page if there was a supposed conflict. Is my account going to be created or not? Your comments match the automated response exactly. I'm not seeing a conflict with 'Maison' since an "I" and an "L" a two very distinct characters. Can you please clarify the account creation process or point to a FAQ that explains why accounts with dissimilar letter structures apparently are in conflict with one another? Thanks! 208.242.14.136 20:26, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hello. The reason similar account names are not allowed is to prevent confusion between two editors whose usernames look very much alike. Of course, the computer program that determines when two usernames is "too similar" is not perfect, so we have Wikipedia:Request an account to handle cases like yours. Since "Malson" and "Maison" don't look too much alike, and especially since user Maison is not active, your account will be created as soon as an administrator has time to do so. My comments there were just to make the administrators job easier - he/she can see at a glance which username yours is similar to, and whether or not that account is active. jwillburtalk 20:44, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for the clarification. I did not realize that there was a second tier of administrators that handled the actual account creation. Thanks for your help! 208.242.14.136 21:50, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

African American MoH winners
[edit]I'm cross posting this here... I just added the following note to your peer review request ::The advantage of a category is that it will alert people to the other african americans who won the medal of honor. Eg if I pull up Sweeny, I might see the category and then look up the other winners. If it is just a list I might fumble around looking for the others. Personally, I prefer categories to list for that reason. The advantage of the list is that you have more control over it and it is easier to watch/read. Also, and I don't know if you want to include this or not, but there was an episode of JAG that dealt with African American's and the MoH... it was well done without being preachy.Balloonman 14:30, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments on the peer review, Balloonman. I have created it at Category:African American Medal of Honor recipients, and added it to all the relevant pages. What do you think of the new table format, it's not too confusing, is it? jwillburtalk 00:02, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

I notice that you tagged Hummingbird with a Wikipedia:WikiProject Caribbean and rated it, and I'm curious as to the rationale for that. While there are indeed hummingbirds in the Caribbean, the family stretches from Alaska to Argentina and most hummingbirds are found in Columbia, Peru, Brazil and Ecuador. Are hummingbirds particularly culturally important in the Caribbean? Surely the Tody is a better contender for a tag than the hummingbird, or the species of hummingbird actually found in the Caribbean (like the already tagged Bahama Woodstar? Possible shot at a DYK with Thomas J. Higgins (or not)
[edit]I noticed that you were able to get a DYK with John F. Mackie. I've thought of nominating the Higgins article I created for DYK, but don't think that it's long enough or may still be lacking some components. What are your thoughts? Do you know whether we can use photos from that particular site, http://www.100thww2.org/ , which seems to me might come under US Government site? Also, who is the authority for dates? If however this fails to persuade any doubters I can send them the death certificates for LEWIS Capet, his wife Velma Eudora and their son Osmer LEWIS Shepard who was named after his father and not a typo but I find these documents are inappropriate for the internet. Categorization changes
[edit]Why did you remove Category:Auxiliary ships of the United States Navy from Category:Barnegat class seaplane tenders? The convention appears to be to put Auxiliary ship classes into the former category, so I question the appropriateness of your deletion. Gatoclass 02:32, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hmm, I guess that's a reasonable explanation, but if you are going to do that there are more seaplane tender classes you need to do the same thing with.
- Have you had much experience categorizing ships? I've done a bit of it myself, it's quite complicated and I've made a number of mistakes, so I get a little concerned when I see people making wholesale changes. Gatoclass 02:42, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
For example, I notice you have removed a bunch of cats from USS Bergen (APA-150) including Category:Troop ships. Are you aware that ships have a number of different master categories, including ships by type, ships by navy, ships by country, ships by era and so on? Perhaps deleting the ship from the Troop ships category itself may have been the correct thing to do, but then you didn't add a subcat from the "Ships by type" master cat which means if I'm not mistaken that you have entirely removed the ship from that particular master cat tree. Gatoclass 02:59, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- As another example, you have "refined" the category on USS Albacore (AGSS-569) from Category:Submarines of the United States to Category:Submarines of the United States Navy. First of all, there is no such cat as the latter, as you can see, so I hope you haven't added this nonexistent cat to a whole bunch of articles. The correct cat name is Category:United States Navy submarines. More to the point however, Category:Submarines of the United States and Category:United States Navy submarines are in different trees, one in the Category:Ships by country tree and the other in the Category:Ships by navy tree. So this sub should probably be in both trees, not one or the other. (If the sub was in a class though, neither of these cats would go directly on the ship article, but would be placed on the class category instead).
- Have you read the Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships/Categorization page? While it isn't comprehensive, it's a very useful starting point. Gatoclass 03:36, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
categorizing all ships in both "Xs of the United States" and "United States Navy Xs" doesn't make much sense to me, so I've brought it up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ships#Categorization question - JWillbur.
Believe me, you are not the first to think so! I brought the subject up a couple of weeks ago at the Maritime Warfare Taskforce page, where I proposed the deletion of the "Ships by navy" tree as it seemed to me an unnecessary duplication. I then discovered that this has long been a contentious issue, with some users supporting the "Ships by navy" tree and others supporting the "Ships by country" tree. User TomTheHand, who has considerable experience in ship categorization, pointed me to some of the previous discussions in this thread on his talk page. To sum up, it's been decided to keep both these trees because users cannot agree on either one going.
Personally, I think it's time users interested in ship categorization got together at wikiproject ships and tried to work out a comprehensive scheme for categorization, because we constantly seem to have users working at cross purposes to one another in this field, as you seem to be doing ATM in regards to Tom and myself. Also, I think we need to work out a comprehensive scheme to avoid duplication of work, if you or I or someone else is going to be working on ship categorization particularly at the individual ship level, then we really need to be getting it right the first time around or we will end up having to revisit literally thousands of ship articles to do them all over again. William Moore (Medal of Honor)
[edit]Jwillbur and Kumioko: I invite you too settle an issue. It appears that IP4240207xx suffers from Kobe Bryant syndrome in that he insists on tearing down his teammates in public for all to see so that he can feel more secure in his own failures instead of offering support and or guidance. Teammates in this case would be novice contributors who are being stomped by the BIG Boys with comments like “Attempt to clean up mess made by User:Lasherp”.
I am well aware that I have no business even being here if I can’t handle someone else editing my contribs but that goes both ways for me and my Laker friend and I can assure you I have been edited plenty by you and others and only once had a problem with the changes that were made to my page.
Reference: User talk:Lasherp I have incorporated all six outstanding suggestions by IP4240207xx made on the 8th of Nov into all my editing and you need only look at the drastic change in my format and style as of that date to see it, but not one of those suggestions was made with malice and all were appreciated. Here is the problem: William Moore (Medal of Honor)
I have returned William Moore (Medal of Honor) to my last edit change and than back to the original from the 16 of Sep by IP4240207xx removing all traces of a mess that I may have added. After doing so I would ask that someone please explain where the mess is and suggest an end format so that I may continue to use it across the board with other MOH recipients.

Re:Patrick Mullen
[edit]Make sure all people are in correct conflict
- Patrick Mullen - second MOH should be peacetime, not Civil War?
- Just as an FYI, the MoH can only be awarded during direct combat, so it could not be awarded in "peacetime". --Daysleeper47 (talk) 20:24, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- It's my understanding that, before World War II, it could be awarded for non-combat actions; there is a whole list of peacetime recipients. Mullen's second MOH action took place after the official end of the Civil War, and the citation doesn't mention any combat. But it's not a big deal either way, I was just trying to decide which of the sub-pages of the list of Medal of Honor recipients his second award should appear on. jwillbur 20:46, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- I was not aware of that history before World War II. Thanks! --Daysleeper47 (talk) 18:49, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

USCT
[edit]Thanks for stepping in at USTC. It was difficult for me to figure out how to answer the charge of insensitivity. It's one thing to think an historic name is offensive. It's something else to make up a new one.
