STOP the vandalism

[edit]

I understand your enthusiasm for UNC, but you WILL stop vandalizing the UVA basketball article. Whether you like it or not, there is no such thing as a tiebreaker for the mythical regular-season championship. Perhaps our loss will convince you to find somewhere else to go play. 1995hoo 03:09, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You posted this to my talk: "I am NOT vandalizing the UVA basketball page. I fixed incorrect information, that's all. I hate UNC. UVA is not regular season ACC champ. I am a big Cavs fan. Let me explain something. The regular season title is unofficial and is only meant to determine the #1 seed in the ACC tourney. They can't have two #1 seeds. So a tiebreaker comes into effect to determine the 1 seed and thus the regular season champion. This year it is UNC which, sadly during the regular season, beat UVA."
I will take you at your word, but you're wrong. The tiebreaker doesn't apply to a "regular season title," which, as you note, is indeed unofficial. The tiebreaker applies ONLY to the seeding, and the schools that finished tied for first (this year, UVA and UNC) can both claim to be "co-champions." The ACC's media guide bears this out. I cannot link you directly to the source, but please take a look at the second page of the PDF linked here: [1] If that link doesn't work, then go here [2] and click the "Pages 77-103" link and go to the second page. This is the ACC's media guide for the season that ends tomorrow. Look at the second column on the page I reference and take note of 1956, 1959, 1960, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1995, and 2001. In particular, note 1995, where four teams (including UVA) finished 12-4 and were "regular season co-champions." The ACC have always been pansies about breaking ties in any sport; consider the 1989 and 1995 UVA football teams, both of whom beat the teams tied with them in the standings (Duke and FSU, respectively), but both of whom were deemed "co-champions" by the league, to the point where the ACC allowed the Bowl Alliance to take FSU over UVA in 1995 because there was no tiebreaker. If your argument were correct, then only one school would be listed in the media guide column I reference. (While it is an unofficial thing, any time a team picked to finish 8th ends up tied for 1st it's a notable achievement.) 1995hoo 15:39, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NCAA Tourney de-linking

[edit]

I'm not sure I agree with your assessment on 2007 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament that "Since the teams are already stated above it is redundant and not necessary to wikilink them." It's OK to have multiple links to the same article on a page. According to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (links), a good guideline is to include the same link only once per subsection. The article followed this guideline before you removed all the links. That's why the team name was a link in the first round, but not later rounds. Those links would have been redundant, but the first link in a particular subsection is not. As it stands, a reader has to scroll through most of the article to find the team link.

If you feel differently, let me know. Otherwise I'll add those links back in. --dantheox 19:55, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on 2007 Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship, by Seancp, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because 2007 Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

The information in this article is already in another, better maintained article. See: 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting 2007 Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate 2007 Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 17:30, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article 2005-06 ACC Men's basketball season, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Tikiwont 08:44, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on List of Zip Codes in Maryland, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

This is a non-notable list of indiscriminate information.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet very basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Realkyhick 20:28, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you can't come but want to make sure that you are informed of future meetings be sure to list yourself under "but let me know about future events", and if you don't want to get any future direct notices \(like this one\), you can list yourself under "I'm not interested in attending any others either" on the DC meetup page.--Gmaxwell 00:27, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Commercial use of Image:Davidcoltart.gif

[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Davidcoltart.gif, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Davidcoltart.gif has a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission, which was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 or is not used in any articles (CSD I3). While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, this is in fact not the case[3][4]. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. See our non-free content guidelines for more more information.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. This bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:Davidcoltart.gif itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. If you have any questions about what to do next or why your image was nominated for speedy deletion please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thanks. --Android Mouse Bot 2 22:44, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Davidcoltart.gif. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI 00:09, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bulawayo South Feedback

[edit]

Hi, you asked for feedback on the Bulawayo South Consituency, so here are my opinions. The actual content is great. You have clearly done a lot of research into the elections and their results. Looking at other constituencies such as South Norfolk could we include a piece about the boundaries to complement the map. However, the map isnt visible in the article, only when you click on it. I can't seem to fix it though. I shall make a navigation template to swap between different constituencies, as seen in the Australian Constituencies and I will also include Infoboxes in the articles as you make them should you wish to spread the work load. But otherwise, I think that you have done a great job and keep it up. Thanks for your help. Mangwanani 10:05, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just had another look at it and I do realise what I had done. That was actually the first Infobox I made and trying to work out the syntax completely threw me and so it didnt come out as well as wished. Never mind, others can change where required. The main point is that we have one now for future articles. Mangwanani 10:34, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the nomination text and help improve the article to featured article standard if you can.

As the number of people taking part in WikiProject Zimbabwe grows, I have more and more people to notify of changes. If you havn't already done so, please could you add the notice board to your watch list so that I can add any changes there and only once not as many times as there are members. Many thanks, Mangwanani 13:12, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Milton H. West, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:594635660b85e5edaa9638c429bbd403.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:594635660b85e5edaa9638c429bbd403.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:09, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notice to all members of WikiProject Maryland

[edit]

There are a few things going on right now in WikiProject Maryland that I thought all members should know about, especially the first one.

  • Not too long ago, Marylandstater raised the question of exactly how many members of the project are still active. For this reason, I'm asking everyone who is still active, and wants to remain in the project, to put an asterisk (*) after their username on the project's participants list. You have until the end of November 17, 2007 to do so, sometime after that, all the names that do not have an asterisk will be removed. This is just to clean up the ever expanding list. If you've been gone and come back to find that you've been removed from the list, don't take it personally, just re-add yourself! I won't feel bad at all if no one gets removed, in fact, it would be nice if all 30 members still consider themselves active. Also, this won't affect the two subprojects, but speaking of the subprojects...
  • As of sometime next week WikiProject Baltimore City College will be no more. Myself, Golem88991, and John Carter have decided to make it into a task force of WikiProject Maryland. If you have any objections, concerns, or comments, please post them in the talk page topic concerning this.

Now for the exiting news:

  • I'm pleased to announce the creation of the Baltimore Task Force! Those interested in contributing to Wikipedia's numerous articles related to Maryland's largest city, now have a place to collaborate.
  • I'd also like to take this time to propose a project newsletter. Any comments should be directed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maryland#Newsletter.

A couple last things:

  • The portal is in desperate need of maintenance, anyone who's interested, go check it out.
  • It's probably a good idea to add the project page (and thus the project talk page) to your watchlist. That way, you can easily see when new comments are posted.

I hope you read through all that ;). Thanks to all members for your contributions to the project's articles so far, let's keep up the good work!
Sincerely, -Jeff (talk) 05:55, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Listen, you said in your edit summary that there are "many articles" that say he attends synagogue regularly. That's nice -- cite them. You were actually removing a reference that was there already, and then asserting that you had references?? Nuh-uh. Also, "Very observant" is not encyclopedic. If he is very observant, the infobox would simply say "Jewish." That's how I've left it now. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:TX04fix.svg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:TX04fix.svg is a duplicate of an already existing article, category or image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:TX04fix.svg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Image permission problem with Image:Davidcoltart.gif

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Davidcoltart.gif, which you've sourced to David Coltart. I noticed that that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mosmof (talk) 21:55, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tom Udall's religion: Mormon

[edit]

I notice that in your 23 February 2008 edit of the Tom Udall article, you changed the designation of his religion so that "Mormon" is displayed. (Previously, it was "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints".) In other articles about LDS people, the complete name of the church is shown. Is there a reason why this should be different for Tom Udall? Peter Chastain (talk) 02:24, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stellenbosch to bid for Wikimania 2012!

[edit]

Hi Joseph!

The nascent South African Wikimedia chapter has decided to bid to host Wikimania in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2012. This would be the first Wikimania in South Africa, and would be a great advertisement for our country. Please take a look at meta:Wikimania_2012/Bids/Stellenbosch. If you can add to the discussion, please do. If you feel that you are able to do anything to help, please join the Wikimedia South Africa mailing list and let us know. Even simple messages of support are valued!

Best regards,

David Richfield

Hi. When you recently edited 2012 Baltimore Orioles season, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Jason Hammel (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Wikipedia:Non-free content policy and guideline

[edit]

Please do not replace non-free logos such as File:Maryland Primary Athletic Wordmark.png into articles about individual seasons/team years. Such use is listed as an unacceptable use in the policy concerning non-free content. See in particular WP:NFC#UUI point 14. I also restored the FURs you removed from the file page since non-free images with allowances for only non-commercial use are still be considered to be non-free. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. VernoWhitney (talk) 01:42, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm responding here in an effort to keep the conversation in one place and would appreciate it if you would do the same. Did you see where I said above that images which only allow non-commercial use are still considered to be non-free? VernoWhitney (talk) 02:34, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Wiesława Hunzvi for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Wiesława Hunzvi is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Wiesława Hunzvi until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

TfD nomination of NFL season templates

[edit]

Hi there - I have nominated all of the NFL's team season templates, some of which you created, for deletion. You can find the discussion at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2021 February 16#NFL team season templates. Thanks, PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 04:01, 16 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Republic of Ragusa, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Italian. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
