Changes later this week
- Normally pages can be moved to a title that has no existing page yet or to a page that has only one revision, which is a redirect to the page to be moved. A new user right allows editors to move pages over one-revision pages that redirect to anywhere. [3]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 September. It will be on all wikis from 10 September (calendar).
- All MediaWiki API modules will now use
watchlist
instead ofwatch
. This was inconsistent before. [4]
Future changes
- The Wikipedia Android app team might work on patrolling tools in the future. You can let them know what tools would be useful for you or for less experienced patrollers. See the page on mediawiki.org.
- OTRS will be updated to a new version. This will probably take around two days. OTRS agents will not have access to the system during these days. Emails that come in during the update will be delivered when the update is done. The plan is to start around 08:00 UTC on 14 September. This could change. [5]
- The Wikipedia Android app will send push notifications if users want them. This could help you see for example when someone wrote on your talk page or your edit was reverted. This will need Google Play Services to work. It will also be possible to get the app without Google Play Services but push notifications will not work. Google Play Services is also used to make the app work for Android 4.4 users. [6][7]
- Wikimedia code review could move to GitLab. It would be hosted on Wikimedia servers. You can take part in the consultation.
- Dropdown menus in the Vector skin use a
.menu
class. This will not work in the future. Scripts can usenav ul
instead..vectorTabs
and.vectorMenu
will also not work. Some scripts need to be updated. You can read more in Phabricator.

September 2020
Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. In the future, please use the preview button before you save your edit; this helps you find any errors you have made and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history, as well as helping prevent edit conflicts. Below the edit box is a Show preview button. Pressing this will show you what the article will look like without actually saving it.
It is strongly recommended that you use this before saving. If you have any questions, contact the help desk for assistance. Thank you. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:29, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
DYK for Tash Farrant
On 10 September 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tash Farrant, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that during the 2018 Women's Cricket Super League, Tash Farrant took a hat-trick, but her team still lost the match? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tash Farrant. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Tash Farrant), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

ANI
Despite me telling the user multiple times they must notify you, it doesn't appear they've listened. There is currently a discussion at ANI that involves you. See here. Praxidicae (talk) 16:40, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, hopefully this will be the last of it. Joseph2302 (talk) 17:47, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
questions about editing patterns
Hey, Joseph, you said at ANI that if anyone thought your comment at User_talk:Iitianeditor#Multiple_AfDs that "I'm saying that an Indian editor nominating 20 Pakistani cricketers (and no cricketers of any other nationality) is suspicious" was out of order to let you know. I do, a little. Not horrible, and an experienced editor would probably just have said, "That's offensive, and I object to that characterization" rather than accusing you of calling them racist.
It's possible this brand-new editor -- who, in fact, has nominated articles that turned out to be for non-notable players -- may simply have been poking around on Wikipedia looking at articles about a sport they're interested in, came across a player that made them go, "What? That guy's not a notable player! How do I fix this?" And they noticed another article created by the same editor was the same! And another! And maybe, just maybe, the other editor is creating articles for non-notable Pakistani cricketers. Does the fact this editor is Indian and the players are Pakistani have anything to do with this? Maybe. But there are other explanations. I think jumping to the conclusion this was bias because it's an Indian editor and the articles are about Pakistani players and saying so first thing was a little problematic, yes. —valereee (talk) 12:05, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
- Discretionary sanctions are clear, anyone nominating that many articles of one nationality in a DS area it is fair to ask questions. The admin action and all the conversations they started were clear: they made inappropriate accusations, and not one admin has implied anything I did was wrong. The fact that they're Indian made no difference to me, but DS notice might jave been the clearer way to express my questions. The fact the articles were Pakistani mattered only in so far as it fell under the remit of DS. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:28, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
- And I agree. There was reason to be suspicious. You asked for input, I gave it. —valereee (talk) 22:37, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback. Although I cannot see deleted contributions that you linked to (as not an admin). Joseph2302 (talk) 07:47, 13 September 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't realize I was linking to info you couldn't see -- it was four now-redlinked articles about Pakistani cricketers by the same creator, who is themself a very new editor and likely well-intentioned. —valereee (talk) 20:31, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 September. It will be on all wikis from 17 September (calendar).
