Request for Rollback

Dear Mr. John Carter (if that's your real name),

I wish to apply for a rollback. As simple as that. I hope that you can help me with that.

Thank you.

Tabor

I've said, and Tabor has asked, that the argument between editors should stay off his talk page - please? Also, would you please recall my advice about taking the high road, don't get emotionally involved which is really, really hard not to do. Dougweller (talk) 05:27, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

You're right about Tabor. Unfortunately, when with Iggy so far as I can tell reality itself takes a secondary place to whether or not his views and those of the EJC, which apparently more or less reflect Tabor, have to be reflected as the majority view, and this conduct has been ongoing for years now, there comes a time when, basically, one has difficulty not wondering why one still has to butt heads against a wall which shows no interest in, basically, abiding by policy and guidelines. But, again, yeah, you're right. John Carter (talk) 01:16, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
Chin up. In ictu oculi (talk) 14:00, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

What does EJC stand for? In ictu oculi (talk) 01:39, 30 March 2012 (UTC) The EJC is the Ebionite Jewish Community. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ebionite Jewish Community (3rd nomination) contains some particularly interesting statements, some of which seem to indicate that policies not be adhered to regarding this group. John Carter (talk) 01:35, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Ah, I see. btw - you should see the French article on Nazarenes if you think en.wp is bad. Entirely based (badly) on the work of Mimouni who sees a mystery lost continuing Nazarene community a la usual having escaped all mention until Epiphanius. In ictu oculi (talk) 01:13, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
I'll take your word for that, as I don't read French. The downside here is that, so far as I can tell, much of this is based on, rather directly, either Eisenman and Tabor, and their references, or this non-notable group. But, in general, these articles are one of the reasons I'm trying to get the reference list together at User:John Carter/Religion reference. That would make it a bit easier for even non-knowledgeable editors to help determine neutrality, if we make lists of articles with citations for the major reference works included in a project or group-based list of articles. Hello John. In this AE, Homunculus cited your comment about some work he did on the Tuidang movement article: "I’ll note that after I made these changes to the Tuidang movement, an admin familiar with the literature praised these efforts". I also see you made at least one edit in the last few months at Falun Gong. This suggests you might have some knowledge of the editing climate on this article, which some people say has been tense recently. Might I appeal to you to look at this AE complaint and offer whatever suggestions you may have? (At first sight the complaint appears thin). Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 18:47, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Science lovers wanted!
Hi! I'm serving as the wikipedian-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution Archives until June! One of my goals as resident, is to work with Wikipedians and staff to improve content on Wikipedia about people who have collections held in the Archives - most of these are scientists who held roles within the Smithsonian and/or federal government. I thought you might like to participate since you are interested in the sciences! Sign up to participate here and dive into articles needing expansion and creation on our to-do list. Feel free to make a request for images or materials at the request page, and of course, if you share your successes at the outcomes page you will receive the SIA barnstar! Thanks for your interest, and I look forward to your participation! Sarah (talk) 00:55, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Top priority

Hi, I see you have been re-assessing some articles for WikiProject Christianity, and assigning Top priority/importance to quite a few of them. I am not so sure that I would agree. For example, Pope Leo XIII was changed from Mid to Top. This is quite a jump and I would be curious about your rationale for it. Elizium23 (talk) 00:22, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Servetus

I just wanted to thank you for the "Top importance" on those two aspects of the Servetus article, I will also change the science & academia one.I wonder if I should add medicine, and humanism with the same evaluation, his importance in those fields is also massive. What do you think? I use to edit but not to rate articles so I need advice.( I do not know if I need somekind of approval by the wikiproyect group of editors, or if I just can write what I think it is correct and they check it later. John Carter!

Hey :-P

Which authors in the category are Bible scholars?

Also, have you checked out the Hastings' Encyclopedia of Religion?

Top-important

What is a top-important? Oct13 (talk) 01:28, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

That make sense! I've checked through a bunch of bible scholars, but only some (the ones on The Bible and history infobox) have relevant articles (i.e., their books have their own articles). I wish there were more. Oct13 (talk) 01:37, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

African American

While your patience is admirable, your warnings are falling on deaf ears. The issue of Leaf's charges of racism has been discussed to death. A formal notice was given by an administrator here [2] but little has changed. Since you're an administrator, perhaps it is time, IMHO, for you to take the next step -- Leaf has already been blocked once for edit warring on this subject. All he has done since is to continue the edit warring on the discussion page (see Wikipedia:Tendentious editing) while repeating his charges of racism. Tom (North Shoreman) (talk) 16:36, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

POV and not understanding the article

Just because you agree with the POV does not make it any less POV. Just because you also misunderstand the point of the article does not make it any less a misunderstanding. This article should NOT give right off the bat the impression that this is about the Roman Catholic "trinity" doctrine view of "God the Father", but should be MUCH BROADER. In other words, as it was before. Meaning, the changes were too radical and agenda-pushing (it's obvious from PiCo's history that he's hyper-trinitarian...), and has some biases towards that (a 5 year old can see). In other words, also there was NO REAL NEED to so radically change the lede. Not saying that a modification or little addition (expressing also the Trinitarian view of it) could not have been done. But this was going wayyyy too far. And I think HIstory2007 (whether he wants to admit or not here) kind of agrees with that. There was nothing wrong with the lede before (though always open to improvement or tweaking). And to make it like this article is basically about Christendom's "Trinity" first and fore-most, instead of as ALSO, seems a bit too far. The concept of God the Father is not just as a title (a Biblical title) but as an overall CONCEPT, of God AS "Father"...which PiCo seems to be missing. History2007 seems though to understand that though. Regards. Hashem sfarim (talk) 18:22, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Ichthus: May 2012

ICHTHUS

May 2012

From the Editor

This month marks the observation of Pentecost, one of the most important feast of the Christian liturgical year. It is our hope here that all of you, regardless of your religious affiliation (if any), find that the holiday, and its accompanying activities, an enjoyable and beneficial experience. We also hope that this "Birthday of the Church" is one which gives you the same joy as the birthday of yourself or your loved ones.

Ichthus is the successor to the long running WikiProject Christianity newsletter, run under the WikiProject Christianity’s Outreach department. As such, you will continue to see information about our latest featured and good articles, DYKs, as well as new members who have joined our project. You might also see links to Christianity related news from the mainstream media!

With that, I wish you all happy reading!

John Carter, Asst. Editor

P.S. Please click here to add the new Christianity-related topics Noticeboard to your watchlist to follow the latest discussions relevant to WikiProject Christianity and subprojects.

Help Bring Wikipe-tan "into the fold"

As many of you may know, our unofficial mascot, dear Wikipe-tan, hasn't yet indicated any particular beliefs. However, yes, as we all know, ahem, some people might object to our beloved mascot running around in a French maid outfit. People do talk, you know. ;) If anyone might be able to develop an image of the dear lady in a image more, well, "Christian," I would like to see perhaps a vote for next month as to which, if any, image of the dear girl we might make our own unofficial mascot. Please post your images here.

Christianity in other wikis

As many of you might now, there are a large number of other Wikimedia Foundation projects, including WikiSource, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, WikiQuote, and others. I certainly believe that Wikibooks and Wikiquote might be among the more directly relevant sister projects. If any of you can think of any particular efforts in these other projects which you think would benefit from more input, please let us know here, so we can help spread the word around.

Spotlight on the Outreach department

Ichthus will spotlight a different subproject or workgroup of WikiProject Christianity. This edition will spotlight on our vital Outreach department. This comparatively small, but vital, project unit is dedicated to welcoming new editors to Wikipedia and the Christianity related content, and to providing information to the various project members, in forms like this newsletter.

The scope of articles with which this group deals is truly enormous, and, given the wide variety of material with which we deal, we would very much welcome the input of more individuals, particularly individuals who are particularly knowledgeable of the less well-known and less frequently monitored articles related to Christianity.

Speaking personally, I would be very, very gratified if we were to have this become a very, very large and active unit, with members from the broad spectrum of Christian beliefs, practices, and groups. The broader the spectrum and areas of expertise of members we have, the better we will be able to help manage the content. Please consider whether you believe you might be able to contribute in this vital area.

Joses

No, I was thinking of Joses' notability more in terms of him being a New Testament character than a saint. I myself have created a few articles about minor NT people - Rhoda (Bible) and Zebedee. With both of those I could find some good references - I haven't looked for those regarding Joses. Partly, because the confusion with the name "Joseph" makes it harder to look stuff up. WikiCup 2012 April newsletter

Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's New York City Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.

65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions) and United Kingdom Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, England Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Bavaria Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.

An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Also, we would again like to thank United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) and Bavaria Stone (submissions), for continued help behind the scenes. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
