THT
To address the question you pose in a recent edit summary: Wikipedia aims preferrentially cite encyclopedias, books, and reviews, not patents and not journal articles. The guideline is WP:SECONDARY. It is impossible to cover primary literature such as patents (which are usually quite useless sources of information except to specialists who can parse the legal jargon. People tend to cite journal articles because they do not have access to or are not aware of secondary sources.--Smokefoot (talk) 12:09, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
Dont go
I saw that you blanked your page. Frustrated I suppose, understandably! ChemBoxes turned into some some sort of strange obsessive-compulsive venue that I learned to avoid a long time ago. There is one administrator who periodically monitors that ward, upon request: user:Beetstra.
Just stick to chemistry - you're really good at it. And we hardly have anyone at your skill level with respect to writing, knowledge, and a sense of humor. The nut-cases do not know enough chemistry to bother people like you and me very often. So I hope you reconsider. We have a lot of stuff to do. So have a beer, and reconsider --Smokefoot (talk) 02:28, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I probably will but the nomenclature issue needs to be dealt with sooner or later. I will let someone else deal with it. JSR (talk) 11:25, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Fluoride
Re: [1]. My copy of Greenwood has a section "Fluorides" (Ch. 17, p. 820) that covers both organic and inorganic ones. Materialscientist (talk) 06:31, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
- Look at page 791 and 821. I've been an organofluorine chemist or an organic fluorine chemist or a fluorocarbon chemist, but I've never been an organic fluoride chemist. (I've been an inorganic fluoride chemist though).JSR (talk) 06:48, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
- But that sentence used "organofluorine". Also, how about polyvinylidene fluoride, carbonyl fluoride, polyvinyl fluoride, vinyl fluoride, etc? Materialscientist (talk) 07:15, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
- COF2 is inorganic. The fluoride hydrolyzes off readily, whereas with most organofluorine compounds, it takes a lot more work to get that to happen (pyridine and sodium metal work really well to remove fluorides from organofluorine compounds). The others are exceptions. IUPAC does not use fluoride for naming organics.JSR (talk) 07:29, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
- JSR: the fluorine business has a lot of history here, and we have never had an expert with much first hand experience, especially in the area of inorganic fluorine compounds. So I encourage you make improvements as you see fit.
- We had a zealous nonchemist here at one time (user:Shootbamboo) who pushed all sorts of nomenclature that would be strange to chemists. His cause du jour was the widespread occurrence of perfluorinated surfactants such as PFOS, and he was initially convinced that most chemically fluent editors, me especially, were on the dark side, environmentally. His tracks are still evident here as you can see if you look up any class of fluorocarbon. Those articles (and titles) should probably be reworked now that the heat is off. He loved the noun(!) organofluorine, which I have never heard from a chemist.
- One theme to be avoided (or not, depending on your disposition) is the definition game of organic vs inorganic - and many related definitions. Semantic themes attract all sorts of editors who dont know enough chemistry to add real content but love to argue.--Smokefoot (talk) 19:40, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
- The organic vs inorganic game is always based on whether the compound acts like it's organic or an inorganic compound. If I can hydrolyze the fluoride with little difficulty, then it's inorganic.JSR (talk) 19:46, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
- Well good luck with that one. http://orgsyn.org/orgsyn/default.asp?formgroup=basenpe_form_group&dataaction=db&dbname=orgsyn. --Smokefoot (talk) 20:48, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

The Medicine Article
Putting the words Pharmacia and Pharmakea in the medicine article only serves our cause by pushing more relevant information to the top of the search engine when people do a search for Pharmacia or Pharmakea pushing biblical references lower in rank. 2602:306:C518:62C0:1E75:8FF:FEBB:2125 (talk) 16:17, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
- What cause?JSR (talk) 16:24, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
You were concerned as I was of the negative connotations toward medicine on the internet when doing a search for the Greek word for medicine Pharmakea. 2602:306:C518:62C0:1E75:8FF:FEBB:2125 (talk) 16:30, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
I am beginning to see that salvation comes through YESHUWA not pharmaceuticals. Sorry I am not going to join this conspiracy of yours. Did you know that pharmaceuticals are derived from petrochemicals? Did you know that crude oil is the ancient poop of ancient animals? Do you have a church you can recommend I attend? Maybe you would know since since you are so antiChristian. Please don't take that wrong. You were against the word because you were afraid people would see the Biblical viewpoint of medicine. I am a Christian but I never knew the Greek word for pharmaceutical was in the Bible. It says in Revelation that those practicing pharmakea will be cast in the lake of fire and tormented forever and that a figure called the Whore of Babylon is deceiving the nations with pharmakea. I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction albeit not intentional. If not for you I would have never knew these things. Also crude oil is what lubricates the planet. Bringing that stuff up is causing big earthquakes. 2602:306:C518:62C0:1E75:8FF:FEBB:2125 (talk) 18:33, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Dispute resolution
If you are interested, now is a suitable time to contribute to this Wikipedia:ANI#Chembox_edits_by_User:Plasmic_Physics. --Smokefoot (talk) 22:39, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I noted that it was being resolved, I threw in my 2 cents about the changes to the odor in ChemBoxes, which I don't think was noted by anyone and decided not to pile on. I think his heart is in the right place, but he doesn't have enough background to be anything but dangerous.JSR (talk) 22:42, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
Atomic mass
Hi. I saw that you reverted my edit in mass number. Here is my rationale for making that edit:
- It is the first time in that article that the mass number is said not to be confused with another concept, therefore the word "also" is redundant.
- The paragraph explains what relative atomic mass (a.k.a atomic weight) is, and why it shouldn't be confused with mass number. The section heading, however, currently refers to atomic mass which is a different concept, and is also not to be confused with relative atomic mass. It doesn't matter which one of these two concepts are compared to the mass number, but the section heading should be consistent with the section contents.

Fishy
Tools exist for replacing one word with another. If the mood strikes, you might consider replacing the ridiculous term "ichthyal" with fishy across many articles. It has also occurred to both of us probably that we need some sort of systematic way of correcting the damage done to many pages by Plasmic person. The obvious problems are the names, but there may be subtler defects that require correction. For example, the "related compounds" lists are often too long or point to barely relevant compounds. Ideally one could setting up a mini database on his edits to monitor the progress on undoing the problems. To his credit, he might have been consistently unwise and fetishist, but he may have done good things as well with regards to other aspects of the ChemBox that I dont check.--Smokefoot (talk) 14:08, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
- I can usually find the ones where he made changes by looking at names and not seeing IUPAC names (or any names for that matter) or finding citation needed tags. I've been changing things on a piecemeal basis when I run into them. As far as tools that run across many pages, the only thing that worries me about that is can we control them enough to make sure they don't change "icthyal" to fishy someplace where it might actually be required? (As far as odor goes, he was on a kick for a while to give essential oil odors to the higher alkanes, as they were on the analysis list of one of the essential oil companies. I think I got most of those.)
- Also, he changed all of the densities to "mg/mL", which may be OK, or we may want to change. I've never seen any text quoting densities in those units, but at least you get the same numbers as you would in kg/m3. Have you looked at the number of edits he has made? There are 100's of them, where he puts in one compound at a time across 40-50 different compound groups. I'm not sure that databasing it will be that easy. I do think we can start doing some editing on related compound listing when we get a chance. I've just decided to do a couple a day and see what happens. Cheers.JSR (talk) 14:23, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
- Oops, misspoke. I searched icthyal not ichthyal. There are a bunch of the latter.JSR (talk) 15:35, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Food sources of phosphorus
Hello! You believe that information about phosphorus in chocolate is unnecessary in the article Phosphorus. But other articles about nutrients often contain many, sometimes dozens, examples of food sources (look, for example, at Calcium#Nutrition). It is naturally that one reading an article about a nutrient may want to find out which kinds of food contain it. It seems to me that it would be quite interesting after the information about phosphorus in calcium-rich foods to read about an example (chocolate) of food being not calcium-rich, but phosphorus-rich. Now there are only three certain examples there. Maybe, you would agree that 4 examples is not too many yet? --D.M. from Ukraine (talk) 19:23, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
- If you want to add information about phosphorus rich foods that is one thing. If you want to add information about only one phosphorus rich food, that is another. Add a section about phosphorus rich foods and I am sure it will be well received.JSR (talk) 19:26, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
- It is unnecessary to add a section because the section "Food sources" should be just a section about phosphorus rich foods (maybe, someone will add there also information about foods with little phosphorus, but the main information of the section should be about foods with much phosphorus). Now this is a stub-section. I cannot expand it essentially because I don't know much information on this topic. But I can add just one food expanding this section only a little. Do you consider it is unnecessary to expand stubs a little bit? As for me, such kind of expansion contributes essentially to the development of Wikipedia. --D.M. from Ukraine (talk) 14:38, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
- If you really don't know about the topic, you are perhaps not in a position to assess the value of the information you wish to put in place. Do a little research and share it with us. Cheers.JSR (talk) 14:57, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
- Probably, in this case it is not difficult to conclude that every additional example of a phosphorus rich food is of sufficient value to be add to the section. One doesn't need any deep knowledge about phosphorus to make this conclusion. Every additional example is useful at least for those who simply look for examples. If you nevertheless consider that the value of the example "chocolate" is insufficient then, please, explain me why. --D.M. from Ukraine (talk) 13:50, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Ethanedithiol prep
I saw your note on the industrial prep of this dithiol from NaSH and ethylenedichloride. I expected that this reaction led to excessive thioether formation but maybe there are tricks that avoid this problem. In fact, I teach students that thiols usually cannot be made well from NaSH for this reason. Comments? --Smokefoot (talk) 13:53, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- It is made that way commercially. In general, you use excess NaSH and H2S. Yields are 90+%. Just takes some tweaking. If you don't use excess NaSH/H2S, you end up with a mess. CPChem is currently producing this material with this route.JSR (talk) 13:56, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I always figured that there was a way to do this with tweaking the stoichiometry, so nice to hear. On a related note, do you know of any commercial applications aside from selling it to researchers? Ditto for the two propanedithiols. You might review the prep section in Thiol, since I wrote that relying on academic perspective leavened by Ullmann's.--Smokefoot (talk) 14:33, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Harvade, a cotton defoliant, is the biggest application for the ethanedithiol. Never could get anyone to bite on the propanedithiols, but not for lack of trying. I have not been told about any other applications in the last 10-15 years, so I assume this is true.JSR (talk) 14:38, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- Don't mean to intrude but this is an interesting discussion. John, do you have a ref for the commercial prep? --Rifleman 82 (talk) 14:57, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Actually, the easiest one to find is the 1997 Kirk-Othmer article on thiols, but I get into trouble quoting that one. I may need to dig into the patent literature to find that one.JSR (talk) 15:14, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- Well I cite my own work occasionally for reviews and a text. --Smokefoot (talk) 19:05, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Vulcanization
Maybe you know something about the vulcanization of rubber using sulfur? It is almost impossible to find a chemical equation for what happens in that process. Our current image ([[File:Vulcanization of POLYIsoprene V.2.png]]) was contributed by an experienced organic chemist, but he admitted that he was unsure. I was going to upgrade (remove C2S4 ring) using this reaction that begins with activation of an allylic CH and then addition of SH across another double bond:
- 2RCH=CH-CH2- + Sx → RCH=CH-CH-Sx-C(R)H-CH2-CH2-
But maybe you have better sources. I have been itching to get a decent image.--Smokefoot (talk) 19:05, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- The problem with vulcanization is that it is mostly sulfur + double bonds + heat and you end up getting sulfides, disulfides, and polysulfides. I don't think there is a single real reaction going on, which makes drawing structures pretty speculative. It's probably a fairly reasonable representation, but that's all it can really be. Check out http://books.google.com/books?id=J_AkNu-Y1wQC&pg=PA216&lpg=PA216&dq=sulfurized+olefins&source=bl&ots=j0CvbRIZfr&sig=Mvpa5HJRNnkgjz5FNieGeUwtpX0&hl=en#v=onepage&q=sulfurized%20olefins&f=false. That is similar in concept.JSR (talk) 19:23, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Vinyl amine?
You might recheck, vinyl amine is unknown. Would be like vinyl alcohol. Also my guess is that cysteamine has hydrogen-bonds from SH to N but is probably not ionized. Someone must have done the structure, but it is not in Cambridge Database. --Smokefoot (talk) 17:11, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
- True enough. I am remembering having made this monstrosity directly, but now I am going to have to chase down the route. I removed it.JSR (talk) 17:16, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

How to Contact
Do I understand rightly? You post on my talk page and I post on your talk page? A rather disconnected conversation...
SODIUM NITRITE The whole paragraph has no references. "uses in photography" (vague), "electrolyte", "diluted", etc. including the last sentence about "closed loop cooling systems." Should all of that be undone?
If I say "as an anti-corrosion additive to industrial greases" then a user would have to search for "industrial grease additive" and may have a difficult time finding info on Sodium Nitrite. If they search the DuPont grease they will have an direct connection to something that I know to be a fact. It is not SPAM and I don't have any connection to DuPont, but I do like examples that allow an encyclopedia to be helpful in my search for knowledge.
Perhaps you can tell me how to reference a source which is a webinar produced by DuPont, not guaranteed to remain posted on the web forever or even more than a few months? Should I post a ref to a DuPont data sheet? Babahu (talk) 02:26, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, if you are set up correctly, I can post here, and you will see a note indicating a change on this page. Or, I can put an announcement, to be polite, that there is a message here, on my talk page. The difficulty with a lot of web content is that it ends up being [WP:SPAM]. Webinars are not the best sources, as almost anyone can say anything. For sources read WP:VERIFY and WP:PRIMARY.
- If you want to reference the use of nitrites, find a secondary source that says it. An encyclopedia, such as Ullmans or Kirk-Othmer, a review article, a text book or book will work.JSR (talk) 09:37, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
Please address this issue: The whole paragraph in question has no references. "uses in photography" (vague), "electrolyte", "diluted", etc. including the last sentence about "closed loop cooling systems." Should all of that be undone? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Babahu (talk • contribs) 22:05, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
- You would have to go back to the original and determine where they came from. That sounds like a task for you to undertake. To remove it you are going to have a reason. You can put in the [citation needed] template in to challenge those, if you so choose. Also, you need to use 4 '~'s in a row so that SineBot doesn't have to sign all your posts.JSR (talk) 23:11, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I appreciate all your help. Thanks for fixing my refs. The DuPont ref that talked about the sodium nitrate directly was a pdf and I did not know how to ref to that.
The lack of refs I mention has to do with the fact that you removed my addition for lack of a reference and yet I saw no references for the preceding items in that paragraph. I trust the info and I myself don't need refs on those things, but I do want to know when refs are really needed and when not. "Verifiable" can mean you can verify it, but not necessarily that you have to do so in the entry itself or give refs. So I am just learning. Appreciate any opinions on the above. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Babahu (talk • contribs) 23:46, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
- I understood your comments, but the problem is that there may have been a reference and it was lost in the shuffle or the original article was out of Ullman's. Typically, I won't remove something or question it, unless it seems really weird or completely off the wall. You can always put in the [citation needed] template and request a reference. Also, you need to sign your posts. 4~'s is the usual method.JSR (talk) 23:50, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Dolomite "In Popular Culture": "not particularly useful" (to some) = merits removal (for all)?
By that logic, none of the zillions of "In Popular Culture" sections on Wikipedia pages are "particularly useful", so should they all be deleted too? The "In Popular Culture" dimension of Wikipedia must be particularly useful to at least those with an appreciative curiosity (like me) and those specifically researching references to [X] in popular culture, so therefore you believe Wikipedia should explicitly avoid serving such people? I won't start an edit-war over it, I just wish you would reconsider proactive opposition to "In Popular Culture". Acting against any dimension of Wikipedia seems to me is acting against Wikipedia itself. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.18.224.118 (talk) 16:06, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Your request for rollback
Hi JohnSRoberts99. After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:
- Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
- Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
- Rollback should never be used to edit war.
- If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
- Use common sense.
If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Yunshui 雲水 14:04, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
Glycine
Ext Ref is not a spam but refers to the name of tone of the companies in parag thre: "In the USA (by GEO Specialty Chemicals, Inc.) and in Japan (by Shoadenko), glycine is produced via the Strecker amino acid synthesis.[8][9]" Savolya (talk) 15:42, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- Naming it in the article and adding an external reference are two different things, but after looking at it, I would say that we definitely have spam. Reference 8 indicates that GEO and Shoadenko manufacture by the Strecker process. The GEO web site does not say that, therefore, it is not a reference. The addition of the web site to the external links is definitely spam. I will put a note on the talk page of glycine and let others put in their two cents.JSR (talk) 15:57, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

MgOH
Dear John, About MgOH and CaOH: (I have PhD in Organic Chemistry as well.) I noticed there are many different values for solubility of Mg(OH)2, and if you use the numbers in wikipedia, i.e. Ksp and solubility in g/L, they do not come out right. I disagree with your statement, that Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2 do not differ very much in solubility. Actually, they do. Quite much for all practical purposes. Ca(OH)2 is about 0.1% or so, and will maintain pH of 12.5, while Mg(OH)2 is 3-4 orderes of magnitude less, and will keep pH almost intact. This is very important if you need to conduct a pH sensitive reaction.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Magnesium hydroxide
Please explain why you have reverted my edits on the basicity of magnesium hydroxide. The value you have restored (pKb = 2.6) is completely unsourced and does not specify what reaction it refers to: Brønsted basicity to give Mg(OH)(OH2)+ or dissociation of OH-. I have found a source which gives two values: Kb1 for dissociation from Mg(OH)2 and Kb2 for dissociation from Mg(OH)+. If this is incorrect I would like to know why. Unsourced and unexplained values are not supposed to stay in Wikipedia, especially if sources are available. Dirac66 (talk) 02:59, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Weight of Fuel ?
A tank containing say 10,000L of fuel is to be lifted.
Ignoring the weight of tank itself, how heavy would the tank weigh if filled fully?
Wikipedia does not seem to say succinctly, if at all, how heavy different kinds of fuel weigh.
Can you provide these answers, for say
- petrol (gasoline)
- diesel fuel
- LPG
- etc. Tabletop (talk) 01:28, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

What I heard ...
I asked around but did not get a clear answer about the thionyl chloride reactivity - giving alkyl chloride vs sulfite ester. It may well be stoichiometry, such that heating ROS(O)Cl, HCl with a trace of SOCl2 or other Lewis acid would give the alkyl chloride. My organic colleague did explain that the mechanism changes for tertiary vs primary alcohols. I notice that Voss et all keep temp low and sparge to remove HCl. --Smokefoot (talk) 23:39, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
- See dimethyl sulfite. I think it involves not forming RSOCl, which is unstable. Two moles of alcohol forms the sulfite.JSR (talk) 00:10, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
On the page NFPA 704, it states that a compound with a flash point above 93.3 oC is considered to have a rating of 1. THe flash point stated in the trinitrotoluene article is 167 oC. Should I not be using this? Thanks, RedPanda25 21:17, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- New filters for recent changes are now available as a beta feature on most wikis. You can turn it on in your preferences. Remaining wikis will have the new filters on 9 May. [2]
- When administrators, bureaucrats and stewards make a user a member of a user group they can now set an expiry date. A user group is for example "administrators" or "bots". This means that they can give someone user rights for a limited time. This is similar to how blocks and page protections can be limited in time. Special:UserRights will have new options for this. You can read more about user groups. [3]
Problems
- Since the data centre test last week the content translation tool has been disabled. This is because of a database problem. It will be back as soon as the problem has been solved. [4]
Changes this week
- The GuidedTour extension will be enabled on all wikis. This is a tool to explain to new users how to edit. [5]
- Wiktionary will handle interlanguage links in a new way. The Cognate extension will automatically link pages with the same title between Wiktionaries. For this to work all old interlanguage links have to be removed. You can read more about this. [6]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 April. It will be on all wikis from 27 April (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 25 April at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The content translation tool works again. It was turned off because of a database problem. [7]
- Scripts using very old deprecated wikibits functions show errors. These functions have not worked since 2013. You should fix or disable broken scripts. You can see examples of how to upgrade scripts. This is the same thing as Tech News wrote about in issue 2017/16. You need to add
mw.loader.using( 'mediawiki.util' )
block for your scripts also, or addmediawiki.util
dependency in gadget ResourceLoader section in MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition. [8][9]
Problems
- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for 20 to 30 minutes on 3 May. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. You can read more about this.
Changes this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week. This is because of the data centre test.
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 2 May at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- All Wikimedia wikis will have cookie blocks from May 8. This is an extension to the autoblock system so when a user is blocked, the next time they visit the wiki a cookie will be set. This means that even if the user switches accounts and to a new IP address the cookie will block them again. [10]
- The
Publish changes
,Show preview
andShow changes
buttons will look slightly different. This is to fit with the OOUI look. Users can test scripts, gadgets and so on to see if they work with the new interface by adding&ooui=1
to the URL. [11]

- The article on NFPA 704, which states that a compound has a flammability rating of 1 if its flash point is over 93°C.
- The stated flammability rating of 4.
- The stated flash point of 167°C.
There was a source for 1, but not 2 or 3, so I changed 2. Can you please tell me what I did wrong?
RedPanda25 01:19, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- Did you check other SDSs for the product? If you had, you would have noted that they have it as a 4. We are not responsible for doing classification of chemicals. Others do it based on their better knowledge of the chemicals involved.JSR (talk) 11:31, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- So following sources is more important than internal consistency? Another source I found states the flash point at 290°C, and another source states that trinitrotoluene explodes before it burns, meaning that it has no flash point.
Thanks, RedPanda25 15:05, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- Exploding before it burns is probably a pretty good hint about flammability. Don't get it hot. Internal consistency, particularly if it flies in the face of manufacturer's safety data sheets, is a bad idea.JSR (talk) 15:47, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- Okay, I understand. But what flash point should be listed, 167°C, 290°C, or something else entirely? RedPanda25 16:41, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

- I would not list one. The first reference you listed above said that the flash point was greater than the autoignition temperature, at which point it explodes. That makes no sense. That may be an iffy source also. The second reference said that it explodes. So, the answer should be, "Explodes".JSR (talk) 16:58, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

Problems
- Some users have a problem with the watchlist. Some changes in categories make the watchlist a blank page. The developers are working on this. Until this is fixed you can try some things that have helped other editors if you have this problem. You can turn on
Hide categorization of pages
in your watchlist preferences. You can turn offExpand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent
in your watchlist preferences. You can remove problematic categories from Special:EditWatchlist/raw. [14] - There was a problem with the visual editor for several days. You could not save edits that triggered a CAPTCHA. This would for example be when a new user added external links in references. This was fixed on 2 May. [15]
Changes this week
- When you edit you can switch between the visual editor and the wikitext editor. This works if the wiki you edit has the visual editor. The menu will now say
Visual editing
andSource editing
instead ofSwitch to visual editing
andSwitch to code editing
. This is because it was confusing when the menu said you could switch to the editor you were already using. [16] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 9 May at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You will be able to get a notification when a page you created is connected to a Wikidata item. This will come to Wikivoyage on 9 May. If there are no problems it will come to most Wikipedias on 30 May. It will come to other projects and English, French and German Wikipedia later in the summer. It will be opt-in for existing users and opt-out for new users. [17][18]
- Markup that looks like code for language variants might need to be fixed. If
-{
is used in transclusions or web addresses it has to be escaped appropriately. You can use-<nowiki/>{
for transclusions and%2D{
in web addresses. A transclusion could for example be when you use-{
in a template:{{1x| sad :-{ face }}
. This is because of some code fixes to the preprocessor and affects all wikis. [19][20]

Recent changes
- You can now use ISBNs to automatically generate citations in the visual editor. This works on wikis that have enabled Citoid. [21]
- The Two Column Edit Conflict View is available as a beta feature on all wikis. It is a new interface for the edit conflict resolution page. [22]
Problems
- The
mediawiki.util
library does not load automatically any more. Your Special:MyPage/common.js may use it. If you have technical problems that started a couple of weeks ago you can try addingmw.loader.using( 'mediawiki.util' ).done(function(){
as the first line in the file and});
as a last one. Tech News wrote about this in the 2017/18 issue. [23]
Changes this week
- The RevisionSlider extension will be a default feature on all wikis. RevisionSlider is an easier way to move between changes in the page history. It has been a default feature on German, Arabic and Hebrew Wikipedia and a beta feature on all wikis. You will be able to turn it off in your preferences. [24]
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- Administrators will soon be able to search through deleted pages. [25][26]
- Markup that looks like code for language variants might need to be fixed. Tech News wrote about this last week. If
-{
is used in transclusions or web addresses it has to be escaped appropriately. You can use-<nowiki/>{
for transclusions and%2D{
in web addresses. This is because of some code fixes to the preprocessor and affects all wikis. You can now see the full list of wikis with this problem and help fix them to avoid that things break later this month. You might find false positives. You can read more about what to fix. [27][28]
Older unreported changes
- Your Meta user page is shown on all wikis where you don't have a local user page. You can now add the magic word
__NOGLOBAL__
to your Meta user page to stop this. [29][30]

Hello JohnSRoberts,
Concerning the hypophosphorous acid article, I changed the name because I have searched for "pseudo-tetrahedral" I only find articles related to transition metal complexes (and the Wikipedia article). It would make sense to call it "approximately tetrahedral" rather than simply tetrahedral, as the bulky oxygens can distort the geometry, but "pseudo-tetrahedral" makes no sense in this context. Can you please explain why you changed lit back?
RedPanda25 01:28, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- As a note, the article on Phosphorous acid, a related compound, simply states "tetrahedral" for geometry. RedPanda25 01:29, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- It does mean approximately tetrahedral, but it is properly called pseudotetrahedral.JSR (talk) 11:58, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- I have not seen one source that calls it "pseudo-tetrahedral". Also, what is the difference between "pseudo-tetrahedral" and "approximately tetrahedral"? RedPanda25 15:01, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- If you can find a source that gives its' molecular geometry, go for it.JSR (talk) 15:49, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- The first source I found, PubChem, showed the structure to be analogous to nitrous acid... I'm sure that's not right. RedPanda25 17:27, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- If you can find a source that gives its' molecular geometry, go for it.JSR (talk) 15:49, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- It was originally added in 2005 by User:Physchim62. You may have to ask him where he got it. He did not cite any references.JSR (talk) 17:46, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- User:Physchim62's last edit was 7 months ago, so I doubt we will get a response. I would say that he intended it to mean the same as "approximately tetrahedral". RedPanda25 18:18, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- I would say he intended to say pseudo-tetrahedral. It is that way as it has two arms of the same bond length (P-H) and then a third of different length P-OH). Pseudo-tetrahedral has meaning to a chemist and the literature is full of references to it. The only other change I could suggest would be to just remove reference to structure completely. Cotton & Wilkinson and Greenwood & Earnshaw are silent regarding structure.JSR (talk) 18:22, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- Ah, that makes sense. I'll leave how it is, but it would be helpful to link to an article describing what the term means. RedPanda25 18:58, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- How about "distorted tetrahedral". "Pseudo" sounds like it could have some technical meaning, or at least a specific kind of distortion. I see "distorted [some basic geometry]" in both undergrad and original scientific literature for all sorts of compounds, and also in the names of specific kinds of it (e.g., Jahn–Teller distortion). DMacks (talk) 20:31, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

Yes, that could work. But why not just tetrahedral? I really don't find much on the subject in any major source. Maybe Smokefoot can come up with an Ulmann's source? JSR (talk) 23:04, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- It would be a bad idea to call it "distorted tetrahedral", as that often refers to the "seesaw" geometry of SF4. "Tetrahedral" could certainly work, but it would help to clarify that it is not a perfect tetrahedron in the way that methane is. RedPanda25 14:06, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
- The "that often refers to seesaw" is not in keeping with a cursory check of the literature. Or at least the most common uses are for not that sort of distortion, but rather to the lay-language or general idea rather than that specific type. DMacks (talk) 03:01, 10 May 2017 (UTC)
- I have seen multiple chemistry textbooks that refer to it that way. RedPanda25 20:32, 10 May 2017 (UTC)
- As have I, typically among other distortions (I already linked another example called a distortion), so "a distorted tetrahedron", not "the specific geometry formally called 'distorted tetrahedron'" (as you note, the formal name seems instead to be "Seesaw molecular geometry"). There's no reasonable case where a tetrahedral intermediate (Gold Book defined as simply "tetrahedral") is actually a perfect tetrahedron. DMacks (talk) 08:25, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
- So do we agree that the best thing to say is "tetrahedral"? RedPanda25 01:04, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can see new files on Special:NewFiles. You can now pick which dates you want to see files from. [35]
- When you read Wikipedia on a mobile device the first paragraph now comes before the infobox. [36]
- You can now remove navigation elements from your results when you search. This could for example be part of an infobox that is only there to help you find the previous or next article. [37]
- New users on Wikivoyages and Wikipedias (except French, English and German) now get a notification when a page they created is connected to Wikidata. Other wikis will get it 13 June. [38]
Problems
- The MediaWiki version from two weeks ago was rolled back. It was fixed late last week. Changes that were planned to go out last week did not happen. [39]
Changes this week
- Wikimedia wikis can show fewer links to articles in other languages. This is to make it easier to find the languages likely to be useful to the reader or editor. Everyone can still click to see the full list. Logged-in users who use the compact language links will see languages they have in their Babel box on their user page in the first, shorter list. You can turn the compact language list off or on in your preferences. [40]
- You can choose what dates to look at when you look at a user's contributions. [41]
- When you click on your watchlist in the mobile view you get a list of all pages in the watchlist instead of the latest changes to them. Logged-in users with at least ten edits will now get the latest changes instead. [42]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 June. It will be on all wikis from 8 June (calendar).
- String comparisons in Scribunto modules are now always done case-insensitively by byte order. Before they were sometimes in a case-sensitive US-English collation order. This could break some modules. [43]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 6 June at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The 2006 wikitext editor will be removed the week of 27 June. This is the old toolbar with small square blue buttons. You can see a picture of it. 0.03% of active Wikimedia editors use this old tool. They will not see a toolbar at all. [44][45]
- Wikimedia wikis use OCG to create PDFs. The OCG code has a lot of problems and will stop working. It has to be replaced. An alternative is Electron. You can tell the developers what you need the PDF service to be able to do. Electron already works on German Wikipedia. It will be on English Wikipedia later this week so you can test it there too. [46]
- The Architecture Committee will change and get a new name. You can read and comment on the draft that describes the new committee.

Recent changes
- Some wikis have the larger and brighter OOjs UI edit page buttons. When you write an edit summary there you can now see how many bytes you have left before the summary is too long. [47]
- When you search on Wikipedia you can now find pages on other Wikimedia projects that could be relevant. You see them next to the search results. [48]

- Administrators can soon search for deleted page titles and find results that are similar to what they searched for. Today the search only finds pages that are exactly the same as what you search for. This is to make it easier to find pages when you don't know the exact title. Administrators on Arabic, Catalan, English, Persian, German, Italian, Polish, and Russian Wikipedia and on mediawiki.org can test this by adding
&fuzzy=1
to the end of the web address when looking at Special:Undelete. [51][52]

- There was a problem with maps on Wikimedia wikis that used <mapframe> when you clicked on the link to another map service. Open Street Map or Google Maps are examples of other map services. If you had marked a place on the map the marker would not be in the same place on the other map service. It was in the middle of the map. This has now been fixed. [59]
Changes this week
- Very old and inactive unpublished translations in the Content Translation database will be removed. This is because of technical maintenance. If you have not worked on a translation after 1 January 2016 you will lose it after 6 July. If you want to keep the unfinished translation you need to open it before 6 July with the Content Translation tool. You can continue working on it later. Translations that were started or have been worked on after 1 January 2016 will not be affected.
- There is no new Mediawiki version this week.
- EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. It works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. Tech News wrote about this in the 2017/07 issue. [60]

Problems
- Some pages show the error
Lua error in mw.wikibase.entity.lua at line 34: The entity data must be a table obtained via mw.wikibase.getEntityObject
. This problem happens on pages with a Lua module that uses Wikidata. The developers are working on fixing the problem. You can fix a page by opening it for editing and then saving without changing anything. [72] - Wikidata and German Wikipedia could not be edited for an hour on 28 July. You can read why and how we could avoid it in the future in the incident report.
Changes later this week
- Some wikis already have the larger and brighter OOjs UI edit page buttons. All remaining wikis except Commons will have these from 1 August. [73]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 August. It will be on all wikis from 3 August (calendar).

Recent changes
- You can now see which Wikipedia language versions are read in a specific country. This tool is called Wikipedia Views Visualized. [75]
- The Architecture Committee is now the Wikimedia Technical Committee. You can read the charter. [76]
Problems
- You can get an email when a page on your watchlist was edited. You can choose not to get emails for minor edits. There is a bug that means that you then don't get an email when someone does a normal edit after a minor edit. The developers are working on fixing this. Until it has been fixed you can activate "Email me also for minor edits of pages and files" at the bottom of "User profile" in your preferences if you want to. [77]
- The thanks button sometimes didn't work for mobile users. This was because of a new bug and has now been fixed. [78]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 August. It will be on all wikis from 10 August (calendar).
Future changes
- Editors and readers who still use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP will not be able to use Wikipedia. Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP can't connect securely to the wikis. When we allow them to do so it means that we get less security for everyone else. If you use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP you can install Firefox 52 ESR instead. Around 0.1% of the traffic to the Wikimedia wikis comes from Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP. [79]
- Links to sections on Wikipedia don't work well in languages that don't use the Latin script. The URL in the address bar in your browser shows Latin characters like
.D0.A1.D1.81.D1.8B.D0.BB.D0.BA.D0.B8
instead of the section heading in the wiki's language. Links to sections in non-Latin scripts will be in the script of that wiki in the future. This will happen in the next few months. [80][81] - Wiki pages printed by the web browser "Print" function will have an updated style. This new style will be similar to the when you download a page as PDF. It will be better at showing tables, infoboxes and headings. [82][83]

- Videos will now be played in the WebM format in all browsers. Previously some browsers used Ogg Theora (.ogv). If you use Safari, Internet Explorer or Edge you may see slower playback speed at high resolutions. Instead we will get better quality and smaller file size. You can still upload video as Ogg files. They are automatically converted to WebM. This doesn't affect Ogg audio files. [91]

The developers are now asking if editors need exceptions. This is where you want to use global settings on almost all wikis, but have some wikis where you want it to work in a different way. If you want this you need to tell the developers now. You can do so on the talk page. [98]
