Conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, JohnCurrie. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article Draft:HIP (Honouring Indigenous Peoples), you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies.

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 16:52, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies WikiDan61. This has been an interesting experience. I will take the time to read through all the documentation before proceeding.

A tag has been placed on User:JohnCurrie requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section U5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, and/or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals. Please note that Wikipedia is not a free web hosting service. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Terrible process User:Theroadislong - You would think instead of deleting you would revert back to the previous posting that was approved and provide improvement guidance. Honestly, I am finding this experience extremely terrible, confrontational and unprofessional.

Contested deletion

[edit]

This page should not be speedily deleted because... Trying to work within wikipedia parameters and no reason or specific guidance has been provided to me to resolve. Please help. Thank you. John. --JohnCurrie (talk) 19:04, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It is your user page that has been tagged for deletion User:JohnCurrie because the page appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, and/or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals. Theroadislong (talk) 19:22, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, thought this is what the user page was about - full disclosure of any conflicts. I viewed your user page and it appears to promote your sculptures, paintings, poetry and philosophy. I haven't done any of that. Can you provide more details?

My user page has absolutely no promotion of "sculptures, paintings, poetry and philosophy" I'm not sure where you are seeing that? My user page has photographs that I have uploaded to Wikipedia and a list of articles I have created. Your user page is set up like a fake article about you. Please see Wikipedia:User pages for what is appropriate. Theroadislong (talk) 19:55, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Contested deletion

[edit]

This page should not be speedily deleted because...

Seems like a conflict of interest when WikiDan61 was the individual to decline my article. very confusing.

I want to follow the rules but need unbiased guidance. Thank you. --JohnCurrie (talk) 19:09, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

John, you asked for help at the Teahouse, and you were given an answer. Was the answer not sufficiently detailed? If so, please feel free to ask for more information at the Teahouse, or to post a help request here (see the {{helpme}} template). You can also {{ping}} me and ask for help here. For what it's worth, I declined your submission because:
  1. It lacked sufficient references to independent sources that actually mention the HIP organization and discuss it at any length.
  2. The language of the article was somewhat promotional and self-congratulatory, not conforming to the neutral point of view required at Wikipedia.
I note that your name arose among the sources listed for the organization, and therefore I assume that you are in some way involved. Editing about organizations that you are involved with is discouraged because of the difficulty in remaining neutral about organizations that you are passionate about. I applaud your passion for this organization. It appears to be a worthwhile group doing good work. But I caution you about writing about it here at Wikipedia because of your conflict of interest.
For the record, I had nothing to do with the deletion of your prior user page, so I'm not sure what conflict of interest you think existed in that action. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 16:11, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm Sorry, but I or another admin have deleted content from your user space.  User:JohnCurrie has been deleted.

User pages and User talk pages are intended only to promote collegiality among users. They are not to be used as a soapbox for writings not connected with the editorial process on Wikipedia. While we appreciate that you enjoy using Wikipedia, please note that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a free webhosting service. Wikipedia is not a place to post personal content, host personal websites, or do things that are not directly related to adding to or improving the encyclopedia . Using Wikipedia for promotional purposes is intensely frowned upon. Doing so can lead to users being blocked from editing. Inappropriate/non conforming material may be deleted at any time. More information is available at THIS PAGE.

User sandboxess should not contain promotional material or material unconnected with improving Wikipedia.

User space is not intended to contain articles. Please use the Article_wizard for drafting articles, or use the Articles for creation process. Subjects of encyclopedia articles must have significant verifiable information from reliable sources unconnected with the subject.

You might want to look at Wikipedia:Userboxes#Gallery as a means of telling colleagues about yourself.

This message is not meant to discourage you from editing Wikipedia but rather to remind you that the ultimate goal of this website is to build an encyclopedia. Thank you. Dlohcierekim (talk) 20:16, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

P:S: The user page looked like a CV or resume. Please see Wikipedia:User_pages#What_may_I_not_have_in_my_user_pages.3F for more information. As for the draft article. It appears to lack sufficient reliable sources from 3rd party sources that discus the subject in depth. Please review WP:notability. I know it can be confusing. I first article attempts were deleted. Dlohcierekim (talk) 20:16, 16 October 2017 (UTC) Original post that was apporved. LookingDlohcierekim (talk)[reply]

Dlohcierekim terrible process. You would think you would revert back to the original post that was approved vs deleting all together. Guidance and advice would have been helpful. I am finding this process unfriendly.

Approved? looking.Dlohcierekim (talk) 20:31, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK, but it's still borderline. I agree, it'd probably be better to have given you a notice before applying the deletion template. It's just we get a lot of spam in user pages, and we want to discourage that. I see you may have a conflict of interest in writing the draft article discussed above. Also, you should read WP:paid to see if that applies to you. If so, there are instructions. Thanks, 20:36, 16 October 2017 (UTC) PPS. You might want to remove your DOB-- identity theft. Dlohcierekim (talk) 20:39, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Dlohcierekim . I am not looking to break the rules and only looking to contribute. I see a lot of hypocrisy throughout Wikipedia which contributes to the confusion. Any advice on the article about HIP?

Biting my tongue on the hypocrisy remark. Try removing the promotional language and finding more coverage in WP:reliable sources. We really do not care about any subject's vision statement.Dlohcierekim (talk) 17:06, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies Dlohcierekim, did not mean to insult you. My comment was about Wikipedia in general. I will take a slow approach and read through all of the documentation before proceeding.

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:HIP (Honouring Indigenous Peoples), a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

Thank you for your attention. HasteurBot (talk) 01:33, 17 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JohnCurrie. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "HIP".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Abelmoschus Esculentus 08:19, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
