Mohammadreza Ghavidel

Hi Joe Decker,

I had written an article named Mohammadreza Ghavidel(a footballer) and you deleted it because he had not played in a fully pro league.I think the problem is solved as he just played in Iran's pro league. There are sourses to prove it but they are in persian. An Iranian user can read them if you want to.So do I have to write the whole thing again or you can help me have the last one?Yasamin77 (talk) 06:37, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

@Yasamin77: I can help. It looks like he has now had appearances with Malavan of Bandar Anzali in the Persian Gulf Pro League, and that's enough for restoration. I'll restore the article in place, but I would very much appreciate it if you'd update the article with his appearances there, including a reference to one or more of the Persian sources. Thank you! --joe deckertalk 13:07, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
@Joe Decker: Well, thank you.Sure I'll always update this article.Thanks again!Yasamin77 (talk) 05:37, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Some baklava for you!

To thank you for your help.I hope you like it! Yasamin77 (talk) 05:38, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Elayne Angel Deletion

Hi! I'm the original author of the Elayne Angel article - along with numerous other articles about historical figures of significance in the body modification community and industry. I believe that it was erroneously proposed for deletion and deleted, possibly due to a conflict of interest related to the subject's controversial divorce. I was inactive on Wikipedia during the time of the deletion, and did not participate in the consensus discussion. As you are the admin who processed the deletion, I'd like your assistance in proposing a reversal of the deletion and a possible re-write of the article. Glowimperial (talk) 17:08, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi! The article was deleted under our WP:SOFTDELETE criteria, which addresses how deletions are processed when there is insufficient participation in a discussion to determine a consensus, as was the case in the deletion discussion here. As such, it is eligible for restoration on request, and I'll do that immediately.
I wish I wasn't slammed at work, or I'd be able to help more. Best of luck, --Cheers, --joe deckertalk 05:28, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for the quick response. I'll be attempting to sort out the page during the next week or so. Glowimperial (talk) 16:24, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

API change will break your bot

Hi Joe,

I noticed that Joe's Null Bot has been using http:// to access the API, rather than https:// This is going to break soon, because of changes to the API. You can find more information in this e-mail message. I'm encouraging people who need help updating their code to ask at w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard or on the mailing list. Good luck, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:19, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, @Whatamidoing (WMF):, I'll see what I can do. Kind of overkill to insist on SSL security for this bot in particular, and it appears that the perl mediawiki interface chokes when given an SSL interface for lack of some particular CA designation. Thanks for the note. --joe deckertalk 21:35, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Query submitted at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#MediaWiki::API_and_SSL --joe deckertalk 21:53, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
@Whatamidoing (WMF):, Okay, changes should be in place. Feel free to poke me if you see any HTTP contact going forward. Thanks! --joe deckertalk 22:34, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Congratulations on sorting out the problems. I hope that it's all smooth sailing from here. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 22:50, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, someone on VPT more or less spelled it out for me, easy peasy. Best of luck on the rollout! --joe deckertalk 00:25, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

Empty categories

Joe, there is now agreement that empty categories should not be deleted until after seven days, rather than the previous four. Please update User:Joe's Null Bot if required. Thanks, Oiyarbepsy (talk) 05:01, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the note! No change required, you've made the key change at Template:Db-c1 ... all the bot does is to make sure that the servers get around to rerunning that code you tweaked at least once a day. Have a great week! --joe deckertalk 05:11, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi Joe, why was writer John P. Matthew's article deleted?

Hi Joe,

I notice that you have deleted writer John P. Matthew's article from Wikipedia. Why was article of John P. Matthew deleted?

I was going to add additional resources and find that the article has been deleted. He is a prominent and established Indian English writer and, moreover, is a poet and a singer-songwriter.

Here are some links that I wanted to add:

His short story published in prestigious Four Quarters Magazine http://tfqm.org/John%20P%20Matthew_The%20Legend%20of%20the%20Rice%20Mother.pdf

His interview published in DNA Daily newspaper http://epaper.dnaindia.com/story.aspx?id=74912&boxid=35059&ed_date=2015-01-12&ed_code=820009&ed_page=4

His interview published by David Binder https://sites.google.com/site/dalanbinder/blog/0577-316post-johnpmatthewsinterviewwithdavidalanbinder

He is also a prolific songwriter and singer and has participated in poetry readings and performances in Literary Festivals like the prestigious Kala Ghoda Festival.

Do please consider re-instating his article.

The article was deleted as a result of the discussion you can read at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/John_P._Matthew. However, as the abbreviations, and policy background behind the discussion may not be clear, I'll try and explain further.
Largely article subject notability is judged realtive to our general notability guideline, and for biographies, WP:BASIC. Unfortunatey, many of the terms used there are also common words often used not in their common meaning but in policy-legalistic terms. I've attempted to write a more step-by-step explanation of what's required at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. A publication, for example, isn't an independent source on the article, and doesn't apply. Interviews are often considered non-independent sources by the Wikipedia community, and as a result are often considered not to apply. Do read that step-by-step treatment. We need articles that discuss him or his work from arm's length.
In any case, my role in the discussion was simply to note the consensus of the discussion and take action. If you think I've erred, you are welcome to appeal at WP:DRV. Best of luck. --joe deckertalk 21:34, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Dear Joe Decker,

This is the reference to the wikipedia page of Anandmurti gurumaa" which has recently been deleted following the deletion debate at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Anandmurti_Gurumaa . I had requested to resume this page,in response to which I have been directed to contact you (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_undeletion#anandmurti_gurumaa). I would like to bring to your kind notice that the reason mentioned in the debate is lack of independent resources and dead links, whereas lot of sources and independent links exist featuring work of Anandmurti gurumaa as a renowned Indian spiritual master. Unfortunately, most of the links you've provided are not helpful for demonstrating the subject meets our notability criteria. I'm sorry those criteria can be confusing to new editors. You may wish to read User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable, which should allow you to understand why most of those links aren't helpful, and perhaps identify the few that might actually establish notability. --joe deckertalk 21:41, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

IMDb vs unsourced

As there were a number of CN tags on Paula Brancati I placed that tag. IMDb was listed as an external source rather than a reference/cite, without any inline attribution. Not asking for a change/reconsideration, just guidance or clarification for at what point an uncited article with non–RS external links can get an unsourced tag.--☾Loriendrew☽ (ring-ring) 14:56, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

@Loriendrew:, Hey--sorry for the slow reply. Most of the use of the BLP unsourced tag is the folks who are working at WP:URBLPR trying to prioritize cleaning up those articles, and the tools and policies we work with, in particular WP:BLPPROD, are fairly strict about not applying to articles that even have unreliable sources--in fact, I personally proposed extending BLPPROD to include "IMDB only" articles and was shot down nearly unanimously. I wish it were different, but the community appears to vehemently believe that "unsourced" and "only awful sources" are different. So it goes. --joe deckertalk 21:07, 12 June 2016 (UTC)

Itransition

Hi,

My name is Kate Maksimova and I work for Itransition – a software development company. I'm here to contribute information on my band. I am aware of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and I will adhere strictly to them. In fact, my company had already tried to publish an article in 2007 and 2012, but in both cases it was deleted. The reason why [Itransition’s page was deleted 9 March 2007] is absence of reliable sources, while the reason why it was deleted on 13 March 2012 is G4: Recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion. However, since 2012 Itransition’s reference list has grown enough to correspond to Wikipedia’s general notability guidelines and I would like to write the article from scratch. My edits will be restricted to talk page and I am going ask for Wikipedians' help to create an informative, bias-free and clear article. Could you please share a copy of the deleted Itransiton article for my research?

I would highly appreciate any recommendations and advice on the publishing process. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kotsclefa (talkcontribs) 07:28, 15 June 2016 (UTC)

Urgent Help for proper citation

Thanks for approving my previous Article Garcia v. Google. As of now, I am facing certain issues regarding Draft:Shekhar_Chatterjee . I tried my best adding citations wherever possible. The article is upto my complete knowledge and also abides the notability criteria of Wikipedia. However if you can help me improve the Article, it would be a great favor. Thanks in advance. HJ000RT (talk) 18:51, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

I'll take a look, but even if your understanding is correct (and I don't mean to suggest I have an opinion on that, I don't now), to have an article, we'd need the external sources. The reasons for this are best explained at our page on verifiability, which is at WP:V. I will take a look, however. --joe deckertalk 07:49, 19 June 2016 (UTC)

KEO deletion

Hi Joe

Thanks for the notice. FYI I bumped into the KEO website because one of my friends showed it to me a couple of years ago. He thought it was genuine and tried to leave a capsule message. I was intrigued by its 90's HTML layout and its badly written texts (in a nostalgic, so-bad-it's-good way, if only because I was born in the 90's, browsing pages with tiled backgrounds and bad JPEGs next the tune of the dial-up's noise).

I argued for its deletion because:

  1. Even though I did see it in trusted sources and media, they tend to be isolated one-offs without sufficient references except for the KEO site itself. I felt that they were insufficient to establish it as a substantial project, even if it was only a hoax. (Hoaxes like Barnum's oddities and Sokal's article were actually well-produced and looks believable, unlike KEO's rather badly made website).
  2. Except for that Vice article, most other media pages are dead/archived (I was surprised that it was written as late as 2011). I had this theory that some of the media articles, though accessible once upon a time, were fabricated by KEO's assistants and pranksters as a hoax, helping to spread it to the unsuspecting.
  3. Even though the KEO site's being dead for years, don't want any more Wiki readers to read the article and get goaded once more.

In the end, I thought about it, and you do have a point - we shouldn't rush to delete it yet, because it must be somewhat significant if it managed to convince some media of its existence despite its glaringly bad layout and dubious content. We should research deeper, finding out its actual authors (NOT that non-existent astrophysicist-artist guy purported on KEO's website) and date of creation (I suspect it's 2000 or something), and show how it became a kind of Internet meme. From these, we can then establish it as a noteworthy Internet hoax. I've seen Reddit and forum comments teasing it as a hoax, but could find no source that thoroughly demonstrates it as a hoax which fooled unsuspecting people. For now, I suppose we shall put a template designating it as a hoax.

Tis' all. I am eager for your reply. I had a long Father's Day and now off to sleep... --AuspiciousBoron (talk) 00:57, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for the note!
I entirely see why it looked like a fabrication, I was pretty unsure myself when I came across it, and I could have easily not looked any further.
I don't have a firm opinion on whether there's enough to actually support the article for GNG. I have a strong guess there's *not* enough to support both the satellite and the biography, in general, people known for a single event or creation are generally covered at an article for the thing (BIO1E/BLP1E). But all of this is a guess, and I have no problem with seeing either at AfD if there doesn't end up being enough coverage. FYI, there are some references to him and KEO I found via Google Books search as well, but I haven't assessed them for reliability or how deep the coverage is.
Anyway, sorry if this all ends up being an extra lap around the track, but if there is enough to support an article on this weird project, maybe some good will come from it.
Have a great week! Cheers, --Joe

Bhavin Turakhia

Hi Joe,

This pertains to the erstwhile page on Bhavin Turakhia, which you deleted yesterday, 27 June 2016 at 18:47 UTC.

I would just like to reassure you that Bhavin is one of India's top success stories in the IT sector. And he is certainly not an unknown businessman. So I would request you to kindly reconsider your decision and reinstate the page. Please find below references to Bhavin in the media. (The Economic Times is India's most read financial newspaper.)

I look forward to your reply.

Current, powered by GE deletion

Would like to inquire as to why this page was deleted. Current, powered by GE is a legitimate business of GE. All other GE businesses (healthcare, aviation, Predix, etc.) have their own wikipedia pages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.130.20.176 (talk) 17:54, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

Nobody is suggesting it isn't a legitimate business. However, for a business to have an article on Wikipedia, it needs to have received signficant coverage in multiple, reliable, and wholly independent sources above and beyond routine notices. That bar is described in brief at WP:CORP (in particular, note WP:CORPDEPTH), and you may also find User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable helpful in making sense of the way our policies confusingly make use of commonplace words in sometimes more specific meanings. --joe deckertalk 00:47, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, Joe. This makes perfect sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.129.196.119 (talk) 14:55, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Glebos Tkachenko

I would like to keep the Article you have deleted, because it's very informative, and notable, please restore the article And it's have a lot of independent references, please see below: Escultor Gleb TkachenkoGleb TKACHENKO Russie,Glebos Tkachenko R u s s l a n d, El escultor ruso Tkachenko, Traeskulptur Symposium, Træskulpturfestival, Matran sculpture, Russian Artist Glebos Tkachenko, Sulphur Lake Sculpture Trail, List of participants in Atelier Donau, Glebos Tkachenko Art Symposium Luz 2015 Competa, Glebos Tkachenko Art Symposium Luz 2015 Competa2, Nature Art Biennale South Korea, Snow Sculpture Festival, Hoejer Traeskulptur 2016, Rotorua Daily Post, 20. Thank you for all the sources, but the list you've provided is pretty overwhelming. What I need are two, but two that meet all of several criteria. First, each must be from a reliable source with an editorial process, typically a newspaper, magazine, or book. Second must be entirely written independently from the subject -- interviews and pieces based on press releases don't count, completely independent journalism is required. Third each must be signficant coverage, at least a couple of paragraphs to provide depth. The first three sources I looked at fail to meet the first criterion. This is spelled out in our guidelines at WP:BASIC, but you may find my more elaborate explanation at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable more approachable.
Because the article was deleted due to the deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Glebos_Tkachenko, and because we generally presume that the participating editors in such discussions have some understanding our guidelines and policies, I really can't overturn this. You are welcome to appeal my decision at WP:DRV. --joe deckertalk 06:19, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

How to make "Master Arcane" a more viable page

Hey there Joe, I recently discovered that a page that I had created was taken down due to several factors. I believe it was mainly because the person I wrote about was not notable enough. This I believe is a mistake on my end, probably because my sources weren't as good as they could have been, as I can assure you that Master Arcane is fairly well known in the BDSM community. The question I have for you is, can you please point me in the direction of how can I go about making this page better? Or how to avoid it being deleted next time? I've done hours of research on this page and would just hate to see it vanish. Thank you for your time! Any feed back would greatly be appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kit Daphne (talkcontribs) 00:07, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi Kit,
Yeah, our notability and sourcing guidelines are sometimes impenetrable. When we say an article lacks notability, what's usually needed to fix that is sources of a very particular type. Our policy (with regard to people) is at WP:BASIC, but a more "step by step" explanation that spells out all the places we're using common words but mean something more specific ... well I've tried to explain that at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable.
Now ... finding such sources ... generally things that are reliable, and wholly independent of the subject, and that go into the subject in depth, *and* have been through a real editorial process, is pretty tough for kink topics. There are certainly more books on the subject than there were a couple decades ago, but still few magazines, etc. And most blogs--save for those from large news organizations--lack the sort of editorial process our guidelines tend to call for.
I took a look myself, and didn't come up with promising sources. an AIN piece from 2008 was probably the closest thing I could find, but was pretty clearly not "independently" written. Print magazines about BDSM are unlikely to be indexed by many of the tools I use, though, so if there are arm's length pieces you know of about the subject. Are there particular sources you think I might have overlooked? (Please don't dump a huge linklist here, though, just a couple sources you think best meet the requirements I'm trying to describe above. Cheers, --joe deckertalk 03:37, 6 July 2016 (UTC)
I should add that reviews (that meet the criteria above) of reviews of the subject's books might also qualify, sort of. See WP:AUTHOR, part 3, last clause. But again, the sources involved must be all of those things I list above. --joe deckertalk 04:02, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for all the sources, but the list you've provided is pretty overwhelming. As I noted before, what I need are two, but two that meet all of several criteria. First, each must be from a reliable source with an editorial process, typically a newspaper, magazine, or book. Lifepositive isn't going to cut it. Second must be entirely written independently from the subject -- interviews and pieces based on press releases don't count, completely independent journalism is required. Many of the sources you've indicated fall into this category. For example, the TEDX talk is not an independent source. Third each must be signficant coverage, at least a couple of paragraphs to provide depth. Some of the sources here don't meet that criterion.
These requirements are spelled out in our guidelines at WP:BASIC, but you may find my more elaborate explanation at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable more approachable.
I suspect (strongly, in fact) that the type of sources we are looking for exist. I suspect we should have an article on this subject. But to override the community consensus and to restore the article requires for me to actually demonstrate sources of that type.
Note that the relevant sources need not be in English, although it's certainly helpful to me if they are.
At this point, I'd ask you to either try and understand what I'm asking for, and to produce a far more focused list -- no more than FIVE sources which each meet all the relevant concerns individually, or to simply appeal my decision at WP:DRV. Because the article was originally deleted as the result of a community discussion, I'm not willing to overrule the community's decision until the case is unequivocal. You have another option, you are welcome to appeal at WP:DRV.
You may also wish to request the assistance of a third-party editor at the Wikipedia Teahouse. This is a great resource for editors who are learning about and frustrated by our bureaucracy, they're a great group of people. I recommend them very highly to you.
Best of luck! --joe deckertalk 19:01, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Spammer

Hello, and I apologize for the user that seems to be spamming your talkpage. He seems to have posted essentially the same message in quite a few places, including here, the Teahouse (where I first noticed him, and probably the only appropriate place he asked it at), Wikipedia talk:Deletion review, and WP:RPP, and Wikipedia talk:Teahouse. I may have missed some but, of course, they're all recorded in their user contributions. -- Gestrid (talk) 05:10, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

What's your interest in deleting UFO articles?

You deleted the article regarding the Portage county UFO incident. And all the editing history is gone. The discussion page is gone. The discussion about the "delete" talk is gone. There are false misleading statements regarding the "delete" conversation and decision. There are mentions about there being other sources for the "delete" talks... yet all the links contain nothing about Portage county. It seems you've been very busy burying the article and ask taxes if it and all traces of is talk or "delete history. Why is that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.108.211.238 (talk) 07:19, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

First, I've moved this from my user page to the user talk page where it belongs. At 1500 edits you probably know this by now, so I'm a little confused as to why you'd get it wrong.
Second, at 1500 edits, and with rollback privs, you should also be familiar with WP:AGF. Please review it.
Third, if you could provide the actual, specific, precise name of the article I might have a hope of telling you why, of the many thousands of articles on all manners of subject i have deleted, why I also had the temerity to delete one you are particularly interested in.
Fourth, on this page, I direct people asking "why did you delete my article" to User:Joe Decker/Deletion Secret Decoder Ring. Did you read it? You found *me*, so you've clearly seen the message that indicated who deleted it and the message I left when I did. If I knew what article you were talking about, I could look myself, but I have gone to some trouble to actually provide a decoder ring for our complex policies and procedures here, and It might be of value.
Fifth, as this page notes, I'm on vacation. If you feel, as you obviously do, that I've acted in bad faith, despite the notes above, please just go appeal at WP:DRV. Thank you. --joe deckertalk 01:37, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Joe Decker, I only used a tool to signed that unsigned comment with so, ironically, you would know who to reply to. I have no interest either way. That IP address in the signature isn't mine. -- Gestrid (talk) 01:55, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Oh, I totally screwed up in attributing that, then. My apologies, @Gestrid:! --joe deckertalk 01:58, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
That's ok, Joe Decker. -- Gestrid (talk) 02:01, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Well, still, I appreciate your patient response to my error. I owe you a favor sometime. Best, --joe deckertalk 02:02, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

So, @88.108.211.238:, I did manage to find the artticle in question. I deleted the article you're asking about after assessing the consensus of the discussion, which you can read at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Portage County UFO chase, that the article should be deleted. If you feel that the discussion did not demonstrate a consensus to delete, please appeal at WP:DRV. Best, --joe deckertalk 02:10, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Just FYI - pings don't work for IPs, plus it's unlikely a talk page message would reach him either since it's a dynamic IP. Thanks for reverting your message to me. Enjoy your vacation! :-) Katietalk 12:06, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

But it's FORBIDDEN Joe! Geez...--Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 23:24, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

Hey, @Ponyo: LOL! It's great to hear from you! Just between trips right now, it's a busy rest of year--next up: Maine, then the Redwoods, then Antarctica/South Georgia Island/Falklands. How's you?
That one really made me laugh, the Icelanders I've known seem very ... present with the idea that nature is dangerous, and that that's a matter of "common sense", so signs and regulations enforcing safety tend to be (by American standards) non-existent. Glad you enjoyed :) --joe deckertalk 17:10, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
