Hello!

[edit]

Hello JoanneB! You seem to be a very well experienced editor. You would be suitable for adminship but you have only been in Wikipedia for less than two months. Please remind me to nominate you for adminship after a month and a half or so, if you haven't already been nominated by then. JIP | Talk 17:48, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded. You seem like a great editor, and are extremely active on RC patrol, and I also feel comfortable giving you the admin tools in a month and a half or so. Keep up the good work! Ral315 WS 17:02, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thirded (?). Actually, I'd be happy to support you now - but I fear you'd run into a lot of knee-jerk 'not enough time' purists. --Doc (?) 12:21, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Fourthded. Echo all of the above, when you're ready anyone of us would be happy to nominate you for adminship, let us know. Alf melmac 10:37, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
When it comes time, I'll support you. My impression is very positive. You would make a good admin. -Walter Siegmund 16:30, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, all! Yes, I would certainly like to become an admin some day, but from what I've 'heard' I guess it'd be better if I wait a bit until my first three months are over. --JoanneB 13:03, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My RFA

Thank you very much for your vote on my RFA, it is now the 8th most supported RFA ever, and it couldnt have happened without your vote. I look forward to serving wikipedia. Again, thanks. →Journalist >>talk<< 23:52, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I wanted to make my talk page smaller by removing instructions you told me as I know know and dont need to have to get to them, if I do it is in history --Adam1213 10:17, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

By removing only part of my comment [1] you changed the context of what was left completely. Please just archive your talk page if it's too full. --JoanneB 10:31, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

1. How do I archive it. 2. 194.80.21.10 Keeps Vandalising. They have been warned heaps of times and are still at it. --Adam1213 10:35, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

To archive your talk page, create a page called User talk:Adam1213/Archive 1 or something, copy&paste the old content from your talk page to there, remove it from your talk page, and add a link to the archive page to your talk page. JIP | Talk 10:43, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you again!

[edit]

Thank you for your revertions of the recent vandalism at the Superrooters AfD and my talk page. JIP | Talk 11:51, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

JoanneB, I worked on the Ok Tedi article some time after you. I wonder if you would mind taking another look when you have a moment. Thank you. Walter Siegmund 03:12, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think you have considerably improved the article. However, I'm wondering: wouldn't it be a good idea to move most of that information to it's own article (about the Ok Tedi mine)? I see splitting it could pose some problems of its own, but it would be workable. What do you think? --JoanneB 07:35, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think that is an excellent suggestion and have attempted it. Please take a look, if you will. BTW, I added the new article to List of environmental disasters. Also, I added Category:Environmental disasters and Category:Man-made disasters. Thank you for your comments. -Walter Siegmund 17:38, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think it looks good! The articles are both to the point now, I think. I added some external links to Ok Tedi Mine, the ones you already provided in the article as references. --JoanneB 07:56, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

JoanneB, thank you for taking a second look at Ok Tedi Mine. Your additions are splendid. When I saw it initially, I thought it might have serious POV problems, but I didn't find any. Best wishes. -Walter Siegmund 22:39, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, you did most of the work! So I should be thanking you :-) Glad to have been of assistance though! --JoanneB 18:10, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd hardly call adding one blank line before the {{disambig}} tag "vandalism". JIP | Talk 09:28, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops, never mind. I looked at the edit history and saw that the user you were reverting actually added vandalism to the page but reverted it himself. JIP | Talk 09:29, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Yes, he probably reverted himself in the time it took me to go to the history and click on the last edit by some one else :-) I can see how my revert looks a bit pointless now! --JoanneB 09:36, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

About the "I'm being framed" user

[edit]

Hi! I see you've been having some run-ins with User:212.219.22.4. Since there have been both legitimate and "vandal" edits made from that IP, it seems likely that it's a proxy or a public computer. I'd definitely be inclined to assume good faith here, and I've encouraged him/her to get an account.

I've also provided the user with links to your talk page, as well as my own. Feel free to edit yours out, if you feel I was being presumptuous. :)

Well, see you on the ole' RC patrol! Ashenai (talk) 12:43, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rule braker...

[edit]

Stbalbach broke the 3 edit rule by posting 5 times on after the other on my talk page From the size of their talk page I get the idea they are not new to wikipedia and knew the rule. not only this but they posted articles that were not true on my talkpage. Have a look at the histroy of it --Adam1213 16:59, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Adam, what 3 edit rule are you talking about? Can you point me to the page where I can find that rule? I don't know of any rule that says you can't edit a page for any number of times. --JoanneB 18:48, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect that Adam is confused about the WP:3RR rule. The edits he is speaking of are not a 3RR case, as you will see from the history. I noted this exchange because I ahd a recent interaction with adam1213, adn his talk page was still on my watch list. DES (talk) 19:01, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I guess so! It confused me a bit, since I first thought he was referring to the 3RR and I couldn't find any reverts. But right now my best guess is he really does think there is a 3 edit rule. I checked the history, and as far as I can tell Stbalbach didn't even revert once. --JoanneB 19:10, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Adam, I have no idea about your signature, I'm not that experienced with all the technical stuff. Your message me link doesn't work, but I don't have any idea why. Your sig does seem quite large though, and I don't think it's a good idea to use ---- as part of it. Also, I'm not an admin, so I can't block vandals. If you run into persistent vandals that you have given warnings on their talk page, you can report them on WP:AIV.--JoanneB 07:16, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Help me help myself

[edit]

I can't understand how to help the Wiki, I get in trouble when I make good posts like I did in Charlemagne talking about the City of God and the difference in the pope's actions in the city of man but then I get laughed at. So I got mad and vandalized the Weil page, but I'm sorry and I'll try to stay more constructive. I just get so mad when I make a good point and people laugh at me, I want to help though, sorry.

Hi! I have to admit I am puzzled by your contributions. Some of them are quite alright, valuable edits, others are just ugly vandalism. A few things that might help in becoming a more constructive editor:
  • create an account. It makes it easier for people looking at your changes to recognize you and assume that you are acting in good faith, rather than being an anonymous vandal.
  • if someone bothers you, by reverting one of your edits that you thought was really good, respond on their talk page. Don't use the article to cool your anger on. Remember that those articles will be seen by people that were not part of the conflict - they will only see your angry language, which is quite different from the article they expected to find..
  • consider joining a project. There might be one that interests you, and it's nice to be part of a smaller group working on something.
Let me know if I can help you in any way, for instance finding a project that you might be interested in contributing to (I'm in a European timezone, however, so it might take a while till I respond if you react in the next couple of hours). --JoanneB 22:30, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I will try to do better. This is my new name, so that I can be identified. I'll do better with dealing with edits and things to changes I might make. Are there any good projects on European history? Thank you for helping me understand. My name is MrSatan, how do I add my signature? MrSatan 22:36, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid you will run into some negative reactions with a username like this, but that's for you to choose... By adding ~~~~ at the end of a reaction, you will sign your message. This is highly appreciated on talk pages: it will let others know who you are and when you responded. --JoanneB 22:38, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This will help you find pages to work on in your area of interest: Wikipedia:Community_Portal and Category:History. --JoanneB 22:41, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Look, I have added some helpful entries, I am trying to contribute! This is fun. Thanks for setting me on the right path. MrSatan 04:29, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

How did the navigational popup assist you in disambiguation? — BRIAN0918 • 2005-10-24 20:55

By adding this line: popupFixDabs=true;, you only have to hover over the link you want to disambiguate, and it lets you chose between the different links. I think her edits were done in good faith, and specially since wikipedia is read everywhere in the world, stating that birds on US cost 5 dollars is not really that helpful. So let's not make accusations and try to counter systemic bias -- ( drini's vandalproof page ) 19:50, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I know that people worked hard to create that content and I didn't remove it without much thought. But I think that stuff about how many budgies one should buy, or what kind of toys they should have, belongs on a book or a page about taking care of budgies, not an encyclopedia. I'm sorry if you don't feel that way, feel free to re-add it to the article, but if you do, please do so in a more encyclopedic style. Regards, JoanneB 20:37, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Help requested

[edit]

Hi, Joanne,

I recently started an article on ergative verbs. Well, to be more accurate, I didn't start it: there had been information on it suggesting inaccurately that they were the same as unaccusative verbs, and then someone just created a "redirect". So I wrote a new article and undid the redirect. Someone then suggested on the talk page that examples from other languages would be helpful, as it looks at the moment as if they are a special feature of English. I know you're a native Dutch speaker. I spent seven very happy years at the Royal Conservatory of Music and Dance in The Hague, and spoke Dutch fluently at the time, but I haven't used it for years, and it's very rusty. If you have time, could you take a look at the article, and add a few examples in Dutch, if they exist in Dutch? (I would have known once!) Don't feel humiliated if you had never heard of "ergative verbs". I hadn't heard of them myself until earlier this year, when I was doing a university course in linguistics! In any case, the article should make it very clear (I hope!) what they are.

Another minor matter is that there's a mistake in the template you're using for your level of English on your userpage. It says "an near-native" instead of "a near-native". I went to the Babel templates to edit that template, and found it wasn't there. The {{User en-4}} template is fine. Then I went back to look at the source on your page, and saw it was {{User:JoanneB/en-4}}. I have no idea how I can find that template to fix it! And by the way, if you're very busy, or completely uninterested in linguistics, feel absolutely free to ignore this message. I just thought of you because you recently made a comment on something I had said about a Dutch translation on WP:AN/I. I'm going to ask a German Wikipedian to add a few examples, too. Thanks. Ann Heneghan (talk) 20:47, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'll take a look at it later today, sounds interesting! Regarding the mistake in my template: thanks for telling me :-) Initially, I had a En-3 template there, but some people on IRC thought I should change it to En-4. I did, but I didn't like the colour of that template :-) So someone offered to change it for me (which is why I don't use the 'normal' En-4 template), and to be honest, I only checked the colour, not the text. I changed it last night immediately after I read your message. Regards, --JoanneB 05:52, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ann, sorry it took so long to get back to you! But I've done a little research and I've found a couple of those verbs. I'm not completely sure if I've got them right, so I'll post them on the talk page first and then if you think they're right you or I can move them to the article. By the way, it was very interesting, I'd never heard of a classification of verbs like that, a whole new world opened up to me :-) --JoanneB 18:39, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Joanne. I'll look out for your comments on the talk page; it's on my watchlist. I know from other articles, e.g. pluperfect tense that it's normal to give one or two examples from other languages. Glad you found it interesting. Tot ziens!
