"Eolgi" vandal - global lock request?
[edit]Howdy, I saw you blocked our good friend the Eolgi vandal (as User:Halloween.eolgi). It looks like they also vandalized eswiki and simplewiki, would you mind requesting a global lock on them on met? I'm not autoconfirmed there on this account so I can't post the request myself. How about you just get the f*ck off my back? Andy Dingley (talk) 23:21, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Andy Dingley: I think you are misreading that. I literally said what you said was true; the statement was made just to help the OP by providing additional points that needed to be made. That is, what the phrase "Even if..." means here is that "What Andy has said is quite true, but let's put that aside for a minute, and also look at some additional points." I hope that is clearer. --Jayron32 12:59, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- So why even bother saying it? Can you not even agree with me for once without casting aspersions? Andy Dingley (talk) 13:01, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Andy Dingley: It's not an aspersion. I have not cast any aspersions against you, here or elsewhere, at this time or previously. As I explained just now, there was no harm or aspersion meant. You are perfectly, 100% correct in your answer, and at no point did I say that you weren't. I said you were correct, but I provided some additional information to support your correct answer. --Jayron32

This. I had delinked because the guy who did the last GAR felt it wasn't necessary to link him again since he's linked in the intro just above. I have always felt that just because you link someone in the intro, it doesn't mean you can't link them anywhere else, especially the first mention in the article itself, but I wasn't going to argue the point at that time. ArbCom 2019 election voter message
[edit]Hi Jayron32. I was going to add something to this ANI, but it's been archived and I'm not sure whether it's OK to add something below the discussion. Anyway, I was just going to point out that this isn't the first questionable ANI that CentralTime301 has started at ANI; he started WP:ANI#The bot that has been removing a photo in a draft... a few days ago.
As stated in that thread, the questionable adding of uw's, etc. by CentralTime301 seems to really be starting to grate on others. In some cases, they uw may be justified, but there seem more mistakes being made than not which is starting to cause problems. Moreover, since CentralTime301 doesn't seem to be responding to any of the concerns being raised by others on their user talk page, it's hard figure out why they are doing such things. At the same time, they haven't veered from their full-speed-ahead attempts to "cleanup" Wikipedia, which is more than likely going to end up in their account being blocked for one reason or another.
Any suggestions on how to help them avoid such a thing? Not sure what else can be done here and hoped that by bringing it up for discussion at WP:ANI#CentralTime301 edits may need a closer review that CentralTime301 might take a bit of time to self-assess and slow things down a bit; it appears, bowever, that opposite has only happened and their user talk page continues to fill up with warnings to be more careful. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:35, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

Language Ref Desk
[edit]Your comment under "Capitalization of Latin titles in English texts" at "Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language" was interesting and helpful, but I'm not sure that pulling out the same pre-canned lecture every time someone asks why something in a language is the way it is accomplishes any very useful purpose... AnonMoos (talk) 23:08, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry, I don't follow? It was the first time I ever brought up the history of capitalization, and it was directly in response to a question asked about the history of capitalizing. I've certainly never brought it up before. Can you clarify what your objection is? --Jayron32 23:51, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- I was contrasting two different things, your very helpful answer on capitalization, and your pre-canned lecture on why language change is completely arbitrary and whimsical, which sometimes does not seem to be so helpful. Sorry if there was confusion... AnonMoos (talk) 04:08, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- Noting that language change is arbitrary is important when people are looking for answers to the question "why" however. If you want to know "why does this happen", if the answer really is "there is no reason, and here is some more details on why there is no reason..." is a valid answer. Language change does not happen in a predictable manner. Unless you have a source to indicate that it does? Because I've never seen one. --Jayron32 12:16, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- Well, there's Sapir's "drift" -- for example, earlier [iː] and [uː] became [aɪ] and [aʊ] in a parallel way in both English and German, but completely separately in the two different languages (cf. ice/Eis and house/Haus).
- But anyway, the main point is that when somebody asks "Why does entity X show feature Y in language Z?", then maybe the more useful reply in most cases is to explore the specificities of language Z, rather than to drag out a pre-canned generalized lecture on the arbitrariness and whimsicality of language change... AnonMoos (talk) 04:22, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

- An RfC on the administrator resysop criteria was closed. 18 proposals have been summarised with a variety of supported and opposed statements. The inactivity grace period within which a new request for adminship is not required has been reduced from three years to two. Additionally, Bureaucrats are permitted to use their discretion when returning administrator rights.

Obstruction of Congress
[edit]I saw that you edited Contempt of Congress to add alternate phrasing "Obstruction of Congress" this morning following President Trump's impeachment yesterday, adding it as an alternate phrasing, but without citation. This appears by its timing to be a response to the impeachment charge against the President, but has no citation associated with it, and while I'm neither a Constitutional scholar nor a legal expert, my suspicion is that if Congress meant to say "contempt", they would have used that word. The construct "Obstruction of Congress" is not necessarily the same as "Contempt of Congress" or else they would have used the more familiar phrase. I think if you're going to establish equivalence between the two phrases, there needs to be some additional explanation supported by external sources that bulwarks this assertion. I'm not grinding an axe one way or the other with regard to the impeachment and impending Senate trial, but I do think that Wikipedia, which will be consulted by many during this process, needs to ensure that any changes to information that bears on this is well-researched and supported. Kainaw's criterion
[edit]I thought Kwami's question about the tick bite was ok. It asked for the name of an appropriate medical specialty, not a diagnosis. Analogously: "Q. I'm having heart arrythmia, what kind of doctor should I see? - A: a cardiologist". Cancer? Oncologist. Eye injury? Opthalmologist. Lyme disease (mentioned by dermatologist who looked at the skin lesions)? Parasitologist was my suggestion. Also, telling someone "better get a doctor to look at that" is not a diagnosis or medical advice. 2601:648:8202:96B0:0:0:0:DF95 (talk) 17:26, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
- To say "I'm not going to do "X" and then immediately go on and do "X" doesn't give one a free pass. The actions following that statement speak louder than the statement itself. --Jayron32 17:30, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
- I don't think there was any request for a diagnosis. The person obviously had dermatitis, but that is not a diagnosis any more than "headache" or "nosebleed" is a diagnosis. It is a symptom that can have all sorts of causes and I suggested seeing a parasitologist because the dermatologist had already suggested Lyme (borreliosis, a bacterial infection) as a cause. 2601:648:8202:96B0:0:0:0:DF95 (talk) 20:08, 15 January 2020 (UTC) I want to add, detecting Lyme (Borrelia) is a contentious subject with some specialists claiming that it doesn't always show up on normal bacterial tests. That's why it's probably better to see an expert than to just ask a primary care doctor what to do. At least in the US, insurance companies sometimes don't allow PCP's to give referrals unless the patient specifically asks for one, or the PCP actually diagnoses something that needs a specialist. So if you think you need a specialist you have to research it yourself before bringing it up with your PCP. 20:19, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

- Good work on sniffing these out J. I had been wondering if Stu hadn't been editing under another name. My memory was piqued when he made a post last year and then quickly claimed that was a mistake and he wasn't editing on the RD's. I too am glad to learn about CamelCase so thanks for the link. Best regards to you both. MarnetteD|Talk 18:57, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hey, your moniker uses CamelCase...---Sluzzelin talk 21:51, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- Yeah. Even without the CamelCase thing, he's becoming easy to spot. It's hard to put in words, but there's generally something in the manner and style of writing when answering questions that sets off my Spidey Sense. In both of these cases, there was something about the way those accounts were answering questions that made me think of StuRat. It's good to know that Check User has confirmed the results. Hopefully, he can learn from this and stop. --Jayron32 19:00, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- In retrospect, I know what you mean. The CamelCase thing is a "tell", though it's as much his style as anything that's the giveaway. I wish he had heeded others' advice, and then he might still be merrily editing away, but it wasn't to be. :( ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:06, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- I could write like StuRat, I just don't want to. InedibleHulk (talk) 06:44, 24 January 2020 (UTC)
- Yeah although it took me quite a while to spot the previous one (compared to when they started editing), this one I spotted a few days before the SPI which was less than a month after they started editing. I don't know about Jayron32, but in my case it tends to be something specific about one answer that makes me think 'is this StuRat?' and then after that aha moment the more I see about their responses the more I think 'yeah fairly sure I'm right'. I won't say more per WP:beans since I'm sure they must be reading this, except that for me, it tends to be stuff similar to what got them topic banned in the first place. User who indicated they would desist from personal attacks/namecalling appears to be persisting
[edit]With regards to a previous request you made, the user's subsequent insulting of someone as an "insane TDSer" (as a non sequitur in a congratulatory comment thread having zero to do with politics) doesn't seem in line with their previously expressed acquiescence to your request. —Undomelin (talk) 22:57, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
- Have you asked him to explain his comment? Perhaps these are friends and it's a good natured ribbing? I could read it both ways here. I don't know how to read it without some context. Try asking him what he meant. I'm not comfortable acting on such an out of context statement, when I warned him before, he was clearly involved in a dispute. This could be something like that. Or not. Ask him what he meant by it. --Jayron32 02:20, 24 January 2020 (UTC)
- Never mind. I did some investigating, and it was clearly not meant in good humour. I have blocked him for one month. --Jayron32 12:51, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

- Super Bowl LV logo does not exist yet GameEnd (talk) 17:44, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

- That's a fan-made website, and does not meet the requirements of Wikipedia's reliable sourcing policy, and thus we cannot use it. Wait until the NFL itself publishes is, please. --Jayron32 12:48, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

I did put in a thank you there, but since it was late I thought I would add another thank you here. I truly appreciate the help you have provided me via this reference desk. Kobe blurb
[edit]Jay, I don't think this simple suggestion was around long enough (just 17 min.) for adequate discussion:
- Suggest change to basketball star. "Former basketball player" sounds rather odd for a famous, longtime player who left the sport quite recently. They can read about his career in the article. – Sca (talk) 15:13, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- It got one positive comment. How about putting just this part back? Thanks. – Sca (talk) 16:15, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- I'd be fine with you putting that part back. It may have been a good part of the discussion, but as a piece of chocolate in a pile of shit, it was likely to get missed anyways. The bulk of that discussion was going nowhere fast. --Jayron32 16:18, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Interface administrator changes

- Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
- The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with
wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input
. No proposed process received consensus.
- Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
- When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]
- Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators
that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.
- Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators
- Voting in the 2020 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2020, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2020, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.

Proposal for new resource
[edit]I would like to propose a new resource for WikiProjects, a community forum, or "town hall," for allowing communication between different WikiProjects. would anyone have any interest in this? Please feel free to let me know, or to comment. thanks!!
Please note, the page linked to below is merely an example, so that tab header for this page is for a different WikiProject. If implemented, the link would be placed on the specific tab header for a relevant WikiProject, not the one shown below. thanks.
thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 13:42, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
Untoward comments
[edit]"The irrelevance of your comment." WP:CIV. – Sca (talk) 14:43, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- If you don't want your comments called irrelevant, don't leave irrelevant comments. --Jayron32 14:46, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- This isn't a collegial attitude, it's holier-than-thou. My comment was made in good faith. I didn't "already know" about the issues mentioned. If it's a personal dislike on your part, that's not appropriate to the position you occupy. Administrators are not autocrats. – Sca (talk) 15:12, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- I was not aware I was enforcing anything that could be interpreted as being autocratic. I never said that your comment wasn't made in good faith, I said that it was not applicable to the situation at hand. At worst, I overestimated your knowledge level, a mistake I don't intend to make going forward. Also, I don't know enough about you to have any opinion at all, much less a personal dislike. I'm don't particularly remember any exchanges we've had in the past, though I suppose there have been some, nothing comes to memory that would cause me to have any feelings at all. --Jayron32 15:17, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- OK. But I suggest you think twice before making a comment that could be construed as disparaging. Peace. – Sca (talk) 15:32, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Wikivoyage
[edit]Hi,I just wanted to defend myself about that claim There was an editor who added stuff and the sources were Persian Wikipedia and other Persian website (http://parssea.org/?p=298) that didnt seem reliable at all. The editor also added a map (this) saying that the map says "Persian sea". I understood that "Mare D' Persia" means "Persian sea" on that map. I then searched for a full map and I found this [2], if you looked at the corner you will see "Mare D' Arabia" so I said hah! How we can say that the Arabian sea was called the Persian sea when the map also mentions the Arabian sea. It seemed to me that there was a sea that was called the Persian sea but it was not the former name of The Arabian sea. After I pointed that out the editor added to the article "Cornelius Le Brun's Year 1718 Map. On this map, the name of the Oman Sea is recorded as "Gulf of Hormuz". The name "Arabian Sea" has been informed of a sea off the coast of Yemen, and you can rename it the Arabian Sea, as the "Indian Sea" church. Map of Iran in the 16th century by Abraham Ortelius in which the name of the Persian Sea and the Indian Sea appear" (I bolded the word "you".) Also, I checked some of those names e.g. Muhammad al-Idrisi, none of them say that the Arabian sea was called the Persian sea. The editor didnt stop and I left that article with all that mess for two months([3]) until yesterday I removed it. I wasn't able to convince that editor that what he is doing is original research, I couldn't convince him that Persian Wikipedia and that website are not reliable sources.
- I find it ironic that an editor calls me "pan-Arab" while another editor calls me "anti-Arab"[4].--SharʿabSalam▼ (talk) 00:19, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
- Wow. I didn't think I could care less about this, but somehow your rant has proved that wrong. Please go away.--Jayron32 05:14, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
