Hmm. Indeed, I didn't stop down enough on the left one. I'm not quite sure how I goofed it up, nor why I didn't retake it at the time. Alas, I don't have access to that instrument anymore.

Not sure about the cut comment: They were shot over a lightscreen, not cut out.. I think I see what you're talking about, and it's actually a result of the highlights on the metal ring being seriously clipped. In any case, thanks for your comments. They are spot on... Oh well. I took the picture over a year and a half ago and I always thought it was funny that it wasn't featured: I've sold this image under alternative non-exclusive non-copyleft licenses several times for quite a bit of money. :) --Gmaxwell 00:33, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

thanks for your comments -yes they were taken with a micro camera I wish I could ahve had a better camera -even if the quality then is not perfect the contrast in the Bristol channel pic with the rainbow is atmospheric. Helicon Filter

Hi Janke. You put an advertisement tag on the Licenses section in the Helicon Filter article. I'll admit that I struggled to try to make this as least like an ad as I could while still containing all the important information, and I think it is right now ok. But information on the pricing for this program should be included. Do you have any suggestions on how to include this information without it looking at all like an ad? Hi from Adrian, here's my reply to your question on my Talk Page. I think the Helicon article is acceptable, once the Licence and Price advertising stuff, and the Release History, is removed (both of which I have done). The pricing material is inappropriate because it will vary shop to shop, or country to country and, in any case, pricing info is against WP policy (we don't give Zoo admission prices for example). I have a deep objection to the multiscreen Release History so I've removed it again (and from the Photoshop entry) On the positive side, I'm impressed that shortcomings of the program are honestly mentioned - Adrian Pingstone 20:59, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm just curious, what guideline states that pricing information should not be included in Wikipedia? It is very prevalent, such as in the Comparison of raster graphics editors and many other articles I've seen. Anyhow, the product is only sold directly from Helicon Soft, so there is no variation. "I did give some harsh (but accurate, IMO) comments on your sunset picture, but remember, we're trying to get the very best images featured. Keep nominating, one day you may succeed! Suggestion: To get the resolution and quality to pass the hard test for FP, you must avoid high jpg compression (in the sunset pic, there were very visible square blocks in the shadow area - that's a no-no), and, if the original, but very large picture isn't razor sharp, you might downsample it a bit, but still keep it well over 1000 px wide. Stitching several frames into a panorama is a good way of getting better resolution... I was originally thinking of using something like the famous Gare Montparnasse accident image, but haven't found another suitably humorous looking incident image yet; this 1948 accident image comes close, but it's still not quite what I wanted. Talk:Swedish people

We are having some problems there with finlandssvensk-issues. Should Swedish-speaking Finns be taken out of both Swedes and Finns and then discuss them in their own article? However, removing them from Finns would be bad in my opinion. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. I think whoever tagged the image as replaceable didn't realize you had taken that photograph yourself. Looking through the history I saw that you originally tagged it correctly as GFDL-self, but that got removed in a piece of vandalism, and then other people came along and assumed it must be somehow a "fair use" image. I just reverted to your original licensing, but you may want to keep it and any other images you've uploaded on your watchlist to make sure they don't get vandalized. —Angr 09:16, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Your opinion, and your permission

Hi Janke, just thought I would float an idea by you. I'm looking at cleaning up the WP:FP? "examples of image problems" section, which I think would benefit from sectioning according to the different criteria, with pictoral examples arranged a little more formally than they are at present. You posted a link to this image on the talk page, along with the "reality" shot it corresponds to, and I think it is the ideal example for a modified criterion 6. Basically #6 would read,

6. Is accurate. It is supported by facts in the article or references cited on the image page. Remember that photographs are a form of primary source, so care should always be taken to ensure that images are faithful reproductions of their main subject (see xample and also criterion 10 below).

I'm going to propose all this first anyway - I think criterion 6 should specifically warn against deliberate distortion of accurate representations of reality, just like your trains trick! I'd like to know what you think of the idea, first of all, but also wondered if you would mind if those images were uploaded for the purpose. Cheers, mikaul^talk 20:52, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Source of Image:Locotypes.gif?

I noticed that Image:Locotypes.gif says that it was scanned from a 1919 book, but it doesn't say which 1919 book. Since there's no text in the original image, it's pretty hard to search for. Do you have the source information? It was uploaded more than a year and a half ago, so you may have to go digging a bit. I'm going to hold off on using {{nsd}} for now, but we really should have more source than "1919 book" (which we're lucky to have, given that people upload it to Commons with a to-be-deleted en.wiki image description page listed as the source.) grendel|khan 06:28, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

re: Copyvio TLE image

Hi,

Janke, did you look at the page history? When I uploaded the image, I provided the required fair use rationale and detailed description. On May 28th, User:Delenda26 changed the copyright statement. I did not have the image on my watchlist, and thus did not know about the change until you alerted me to it just now. If you look at the image description page now, you will see that I have restored the fair use rationale, as it does illustrate an important point on an article. I will ask this user to see if they can provide proof that they are the copyright owner. permission to use image

Dear Janke

I would like to use the image posted under "stenciling techniques" at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen-printing .

I have followed image links which attributes the image to you.

My use of the image is purely academic in that I an wanting to use the image in an academic article I am writing. The article forges a link between an original typed text and its screenprinted reproduction.

I don't mind, but I would probably not be the best person. I noted the issue because I work with text copyrights at WP:CP. I've done only a very little with images myself. Blue bias on Image:1Mcolors.png

I'm intrigued by this fine image of yours. I've been looking at it for a while, wondering why it seems so blue. I finally realized that it looks that way because the blue varies step by step in the 100 boxes from top left to bottom right. Because of this, the overall image reveals the change in blue. The change in red, and the change of green, on the other hand, vary within each square. Viewed as a whole image, the red and green changes are identical in each of the squares, and the redness or greenness are confined to the corners of each square. I suspect that if the colors were swapped, and the red varied the way blue does in this image, it would appear more red, the way it now appears more blue. Same for green. Would it be difficult for you to create these alternatives and post them?

Perhaps the best way to illustrate all these colors would be with 3 videos. Each video would keep two colors constant and vary the third from zero to 100. There could be companion videos that reverse the animation from 100 to zero. They could all be made to look three dimensional, as if you are moving through the layers of a color cube. == ☑ SamuelWantman 09:38, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes, true - if you read the image description page, I actually mention the cube there! That page also contains the code (Chipmunk Basic) used to generate the image. Swap the order of x,y,and z in the 40 graphics color x,y,z ' x=red y=green z=blue line, and you'll get what you suggest! Actually, there is no blue bias to the image - that's an illusion. If you'd average all pixels, the result would be a 50% neutral gray! --Janke | Talk 10:32, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes. of course. It is an illusion of how we perceive color perception. Having all three images next to each other would illustrate this really well. I haven't done any programming in over 20 years, and I bet I could figure out how to get chipmumk basic running on my computer. Here you are, rendered in 1/2 size only, thus imperfect, but gives the right idea. Believe it or not, all three images contain the same colors, only in a different order! Squinting a bit, you actually perceive both the RGB and CMY color triplets as dominant, in the bottom and top halves of these images, respectively. (By the way, you can generate these in full size by taking the original and just swap around the RGB color channels in Photoshop, I did it the "hard" way, running the altered program...) --Janke | Talk 22:26, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

I also notice that these images are great for testing LCD displays. Looking at them off axis you can compare the dispersion of different colors. My laptop doesn't do a very good job of this. -- ☑ SamuelWantman 02:19, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello :-) Question on cells/frames

I'm very interested in animation and animation production. I was wondering if you could help me find out how many cells or frames of animation the average Disney film uses to make the characters move? For example, The Little Mermaid or Tarzan. Disney films use between 12 and 24 drawings per second, depending on the speed of movement. Say an average of 20, and an average of 2 characters per scene on separate cels = 40 cels per second. At 3,600 seconds per hour, a 1.5 hour film has roughly 216,000 cels. Add a million rough animation drawings and sketches to that... ;-) --Janke | Talk 14:57, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Please could you help me with this question? On the Lion King page of Wikipedia it says this: 'Ultimately, more than 600 artists, animators and technicians contributed to the The Lion King over its lengthy production schedule. More than one million drawings were created for the film, including 1,197 hand-painted backgrounds and 119,058 individually colored frames of film.' Does this mean there were 119,058 individual drawings or cels produced to make the characters move, or is the number referring to another aspect of the production? I'm dropping you a line just to let you know that the tag that you placed on the image, {{copyvio}}, is specifically used for text that violates copyright. For images that are clear copyright violations, you can follow the procedure for speedy deletion. For images that are suspected to be copyright violations, we have a review board for possibly unfree images. For images used under suspect non-free content criteria, we have non-free content review. Other image copyright concerns are handled in various ways (see Wikipedia:Guide to image deletion for specifics.) I have corrected the tag on this image so that it can be handled in the proper venue, but I wanted to let you know for future use in case you should encounter another image that raises concerns. Louis Ducos du Hauron 1877 color photo switched again

Hello,

This is to alert you that user "preslethe" has, for the second time, overwritten the original "featured" version of Louis Ducos du Hauron's 1877 color photo with the trimmed and severely color-manipulated version which he or she prefers for its "better color."

As a newbie, I am reluctant to get into a reversion war over a secondary matter this early in the day, especially as I may need to preserve all my ammo for defending some conventional-wisdom-busting in the field (early color photography) which I am tackling.

Nonetheless, the switch makes meaningless the comments about the visibility of the overlapping color elements in its thumbnail caption in the "Color photography" article (the main site of my Wikipedia efforts thus far), makes inapplicable the dimensional data and George Eastman House reference in its caption in the "Louis Ducos du Hauron" stub, and wreaks who knows what other ill effects on the thirty or so other uses not yet checked.

IMHO, the availability of alternative versions of an image is a good thing, but I am surprised that an existing version can thus be arbitrarily replaced, and with such evident disregard for the wider consequences.

If you do not care to deal with this a second time, perhaps you can direct me to the relevant how-to information? It is not immediately apparent.
