WikiCup 2015 May newsletter
The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.
Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.
- Coemgenus (submissions) was one of several users who worked on improving Ulysses S. Grant. Remember, you do not need to work on an article on your own - as long as each person has completed significant work on the article during 2015, multiple competitors can claim the same article.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Dragonfly to Good Article for a 3x bonus - and if that wasn't enough, they also took Damselfly there as well for a 2x bonus.
- LeftAire (submissions) worked up Alexander Hamilton to Good Article for the maximum bonus. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and is a level 4 vital article.
The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 16:58, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Good article status
Hello. Here is my first review of Good article nominee. Please have a look. sami talk 03:11, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Samee, I think it's best to put the reason why you put it on hold so that the nominator may address any issues the article has. Take a look at any of my reviews for example, I mainly focus on prose issues or anything else that might affect the GA criteria. I took a quick look at Lahore Fort and some sections are too short, such as the Others sub-section which contains many disjointed sentences. Also remember that the lead must summarise the article so that it acts as a "mini article". But best of luck, please let me know if you have any questions JAGUAR 17:06, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
- I put it on hold for I was waiting for your feedback (I should have mentioned it). I think the lead summarizes the article properly. Thank you for help. sami talk 19:14, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
Mind if you review these articles?
Oh, hullo. I was wondering if you could review either of these Summer Olympics articles: São Tomé and Príncipe at the 2004 Summer Olympics or Vanuatu at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Seeing as you crushed me and everyone else in the GA Cup, I hope you do review them! Good888 (talk) 14:15, 9 May 2015 (UTC)

DYK for Donkey Kong Country
On 11 May 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Donkey Kong Country, which you recently created or substantially expanded. Cover art for Donkey Kong Country
Per WP:IUP, using "upright=x" is recommended for anybody with difference preferences and/or not signed in. Must there be a reason for using ###px instead besides fair use? --George Ho (talk) 06:10, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- (talk page watcher) For what it's worth, 1.2 upright is huge. {{infobox vg}} used to recommend 1.15. czar ⨹ 09:13, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- Shall I set it to 1.15 then, or would it be still huge? --George Ho (talk) 09:15, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- I agree with czar was going to say that 1.2 upright was far too large and seems unconventional for VG articles, let alone any article with infobox-media parameters. I don't see what's wrong with it being kept to 260px, as it's the perfect size? JAGUAR 14:26, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- Per WP:THUMBSIZE: If there is a good reason to use px, use it. Otherwise, use "upright=#.##" for unsigned users and anyone else with different user preferences. I don't mind a large size; I set my display image preference to 300px. --George Ho (talk) 05:46, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Syphon Filter
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Syphon Filter you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of AdrianGamer -- AdrianGamer (talk) 08:01, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
Hello Jaguar. I have expanded the article Uyarndha Manithan and requested Pavanjandhyala as to who might copyedit the article. He recommended you for it. I see on your user page that you have conributed to Mayabazar (1957) and conducted GA reviews on many Indian films. Would you be interesting in copyediting this film? If so, please let me know. Thank you. Thamizhan1994 (Appo Pesu) 13:01, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
- Jaguar, your c/e on Mayabazar really helped me in bringing it to GA status which is ironically the only non 21st century GAN of mine. I hope your c/e should help Thamizhan1994 in making Uyarndha Manidhan ready for a better GAN. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 13:05, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
- I'm flattered, thank you both! Sure I'll be happy to copyedit Uyarndha Manidhan to a GA standard. I'll read through it tonight however I have been caught up a lot outside of Wikipedia so I should start copyediting it by tomorrow. Don't worry, I won't be inactive for long; I'll get the job done as soon as possible. JAGUAR 16:18, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
A gentle reminder on the requested copyedit. Thank you. Thamizhan1994 (Appo Pesu) 11:39, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry for my absence Thamizhan1994, I've been ill for the past few days and unable to edit Wikipedia but I'll start the copyedit now. JAGUAR 13:47, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
@Thamizhan1994: I have completed my copyedit of the article and done what I can for now. I didn't know anything to do with the content so I couldn't expand or ellaborate on some things in which I couldn't understand, so I stuck with revamping the prose in order to make it smoother and ready to meet the GA criteria. I would recommend expanding the critical reception section if possible as the article would have trouble meeting the broadness part of the criteria without more reviews. Don't worry if it's not possible as we can make do with what we got. I can help with the GA review if you like, so please let me know if I can help again in any way? JAGUAR 16:01, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi Jaguar, could you take a look on this article (hopefully if you are not so busy). =) I have done some copy-edit on it, but I believe it still need more especially when someone reporting it here. ~ Muffin Wizard ;) 06:39, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- I think the article is actually almost GA-ready as it is, if you plan on nominating it I would suggest re-writing some list-y sections such as the Entertainment one, as that would not pass the broadness criteria. Other than that though, it all looks good. Sorry for the late reply JAGUAR 13:33, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

I know you mean well but you know my opinion of tags. Bloody annoying. Nothing worse than a fresh new stub with several tags placed on it. If it's an orphan unorphan it.♦ Dr. Blofeld

2015 GA Cup
Greetings, all! We would like to announce the start of the 2nd GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Our inaugural competition, which ran from October 2014 to April 2015, was such a resounding success that we'd like to do it again. Currently, there are over 500 GANs ready to be reviewed; competitors in the previous GA Cup reviewed about 570 GAs, so we can again make a huge impact in helping editors improve articles in Wikipedia and decrease the traditionally long queue at GAN. The 2nd GA Cup will begin on July 1, 2015. As last time, five rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on November 28, 2015), but this may change based on participant numbers. The judges learned a lot during the 1st GA Cup which exposed weaknesses in its system. Using both the feedback from last year's participants and the weaknesses discovered, we've revised the scoring system to make it more fair. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same. We also are introducing three new judges: 3family6, Jaguar and MrWooHoo. So in total, there will be six judges. We hope this will allow the competition to run more smoothly. Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on July 15, 2015. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now! If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges. Cheers from 3family6, Dom497, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar and MrWooHoo, and TheQ Editor. |

AWB edit
Hi Jaguar! Just a friendly reminder that policy says you have to review every single you make carefully (even with AWB) because you are 100% accountable for their content. This doesn't look like you gave any thought to what you were doing (cleanup-tagging and stub-tagging an empty test article). AFAIAC this is nothing particularly bad, but I thought it was worth my time to drop you a reminder about AWB usage before you inadvertantly do something less trivial that lands you in hot water. :) ☺ · Salvidrim! · ✉ 15:49, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry about that, Salvidrim! I've stopped using AWB now until I can either program something new or figure out how to add WikiProjct templates to talk pages (which I'll get to soon). I admit I was careless in some of my edits and I apologise for doing that to your userspace as I never knew that it edited people's drafts and I was careless enough to overlook that one. Thanks for telling me, again I've stopped using it until I can do something more productive. Regards JAGUAR 18:44, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
- No worries, and I didn't mean for you to stop using AWB entirely -- it is a useful but powerful tool, and I just wanted to make sure you continue exercising careful judgement in utilizing it. And for clarification -- Salvidrim test is not a draft nor in my userspace, it's in mainspace (articlespace), which is why your AWB run picked it up. :) ☺ · Salvidrim! · ✉ 18:51, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

- Considering it's a 1950s film I thought it was technologically neat and advanced for its time, in particular I liked the scene where Ghatotgaja was swallowing food whilst defying gravity! Even the songs are so memorable, I can remember them despite not knowing the language. It doesn't even feel like 1957 as the whole thing was so vibrant and lively... JAGUAR 17:09, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
- S. V. Ranga Rao was brilliant in Mayabazar and N. T. Rama Rao was equally majestic. I believe that Pathala Bhairavi too will not let you down, considering it their breakthrough. And finally Dr. Blofeld began reviewing the article. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 17:24, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks and good luck! Let me know if you need any help during the review. If there are English subtitles of Pathala Bhairavi, I might watch it when I get the time... JAGUAR 19:34, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Precious
villages, reviews and love of ideas
Thank you for quality articles such as Bentworth and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and for your reviews, winning the last GA Cup and serving as a judge on the next, for townships and villages, for a collections of moments and thanks, even to a god, for recognition of the 90s and your love of ideas, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!
- Thanks, Gerda Arendt! That has made my day. I work with Tezero on Sonic articles, so he may deserve recognition as well. I think I've been spending too much time living in the 90s and I should really get back to the villages... JAGUAR 11:33, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- Look for Tezero in the list ;) - I understand you do GA reviews? I have one open which I would like to see on DYK on Sunday, - I understand Jaguars are fast ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:44, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- Oh yes, I remember Tezero getting one a while back. I've just opened the GAR and should complete the review later today, if that's OK! JAGUAR 11:51, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you, - I will add the music section then ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:56, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- The music section is now at least structured, - thee will be more by tomorrow. - Did you know that Bentworth looks like a potential featured article to me? Compare O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad, BWV 165, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:16, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- I wish! I nominated Bentworth for FA back in 2012 but it quickly failed due to certain bad prose and jargon. My first ever edit was to Bentworth and that article inspired me to start editing Wikipedia. Just even thinking about it becoming FA would be the culmination of my Wikipedia career... I would love to get it up to an FA standard but I wouldn't know where to start. Do you want me to review your article tomorrow, when it's ready? JAGUAR 13:58, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

- Bentworth: how about a peer review, letting people improve together? - Bach: You can start reviewing everything but the music section today, and that section (much) later today, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:44, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- I'd be happy to take a look as and when. CassiantoTalk 19:20, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you! I'll ping you and a couple of others I know who might leave comments when I initiate the PR. JAGUAR 14:02, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the speedy review, a pleasure. I have another nom open, not written by myself, - you seem unafraid of difficult tasks ;) - For how many years will you keep 18 on your user page? If you install an infobox, you can have it calculated, as my user does ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:14, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
- No problem, I could take a look at that article tomorrow and probably review it then as I currently have two GARs to get out of the way! I thought about having an infobox but I've always liked userboxes as they can explain much more. I turn 19 in eight days, so I've updated a userbox that displays months/days too. It feels like I've been 18 forever! JAGUAR 20:47, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for explaining the "18 forever" ;) - and for the PR. I will look at Bentworth closer once I have expanded and nominated an article I would like to see on DYK on Wednesday. - Watched a friend (pictured) copy-edit already, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:25, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you! I saw that too and am very grateful for the help. I'm currently expanding and cleaning up Bentworth as we speak. Do you still want me to review When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd? JAGUAR 21:29, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
- Sure, but no rush, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:06, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

JC's Girls
Hi Jaguar,
Thank you again for reviewing the Mind Meld FAC earlier this year. I was glad to see the article get up on the main page. Might you be willing to review another of my FACs? I currently have the JC's Girls article up for featured status here and I would be grateful for any constructive comments you might provide in the discussion.
Neelix (talk) 21:46, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- Sure Neelix, I'll be happy to leave some comments. I was actually going to review JC's Girls when it was nominated at GAN! I'll be happy to leave some comments later today as I have two GA reviews to complete at the moment. JAGUAR 14:02, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
Tyrone Garland GA?
Hello. Over the past few weeks, I have been working to make Tyrone Garland a GA-caliber article, and I currently feel like it could be promoted. As an experienced user in this field, would you mind reviewing this article? It has received positive feedback from multiple high-profile editors but still may need some fixes. Thank you. TempleM (talk) 22:04, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- I'll be happy to review it, sure. I have opened the review! JAGUAR 14:02, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
Evening Jaguar, can you review this one? Just waiting for a photograph for the infobox, but don't let that put you off! Perhaps reserve a little later to let it go through on the listing first? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:13, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
- Evening, I'll have a quick read through now and should finish it by tomorrow! JAGUAR 18:56, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi, hope you've been enjoying the sun as I have been doing this afternoon! Can you review this colourful rogue for We hope and myself?♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:56, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll take it. Looks very comprehensive! I spent almost nine hours outside yesterday and I'm still pale, so I must be a vampire... JAGUAR 17:00, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for that! Can you also do The Ritz, London? How was it possible to spend all day in the sun and not catch a tan LOL? I was out in it for three or four hours yesterday and am looking pretty tanned, slight sunburn on my legs. Today is overcast though and I suspect thunder later on, it's that sort of day!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:42, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
- Opened the GAR. I never understand how I can't get a tan - I can spend all day in the sun and not even get burned! I think I have that genetic Irish/English paleness. Only my right arm has colour on it because of all the driving I've been doing! JAGUAR 11:49, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Cheers for the review, Can you always remember to add the article to the relevant GA page and update the tally at the bottom though like this. You did add The Ritz but didn't update the tally at the bottom! You should probably check you listed them for some of your older reviews too! Also I spotted why your GA tags have never showed the topic, unlike the GA nom you've got to add topic= rather than subtopic= see this. Don't worry, I'll see if Ser Amantio can fix your past reviews using AWB.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:41, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
- Oof, I completely forgot about the tally at the bottom. From now on I'll be sure to replace "subtopic" with "topic" after passing/failing and also adding the articles to their topics! I've given my thanks to Ser Amantio di Nicolao for fixing my past reviews. Glad that's all out of the way, I won't make that mistake again! JAGUAR 21:38, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
