Markoff article
Hi J. - we could use some help at Philip Markoff. As you may have seen, 63.215.27.57 (talk · contribs · logs) has been adding reams of POV material and seems unwilling to understand our basic policies - see his/her edit summaries and Talk: Philip Markoff#Commentary, for example. I've tried various ways of explaining what we're about, and why we stick to sources, etc., but it seems to be going in one ear and out the other, and he just keeps making his edits without consensus. Now a new user Theo789 (talk · contribs · logs) is doing the same thing - making the same edits. Probably the same person, maybe not, I don't know. But I think perhaps some admin voices coming in with some explanation of how we do things might help, or maybe we need to consider something beyond that. It's becoming increasingly difficult to work on the article and keep it neutral - I've been trying, as have a couple of others, but it's not working. An example is the repeated insertion of negative characterizations of the victims - implying what, that they deserved their fate? I don't know, but I do know that it's beyond POV. Thanks for any help or suggestions about how to get others more involved, and who. It's a fairly high profile article, at least for now - over 30,000 views this past week - so I think we need to rein it in. Thanks Tvoz/talk 00:22, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

- OK - I just read the article again, with a slew of new edits that I hadn't seen, and I'm about to give up. At one point I think the piece was pretty balanced and NPOV - maybe this edit - but now the crazy has blossomed all over and it's out of hand on both sides I'm afraid. If you have any ideas about how to proceed I'd appreciate it. If not, I may move on to something more productive and let the chips fall where they fall. Ok so sorry, yes it was wrong for me to vandalise, but i just spent over 1 hour editing a page correctly until to find that 2minutes later another member, not you, had reverted it back, yet it isnt an administrator, i wrote more information and didnt delete anything, and it was all correct but the deleters reason was because it didnt look good! i just wrote the best information on a pokemon !! yes thats right...1 hour on 1 pokemon! and it was amazing! but now its lost forever ! :( PS: sorry for the vandalism, it was merely an act of anger and will never happen again, its just a waste of time! and i have never done it before..
- I am sorry for reverting it, but as I said on your talkpage, the Pokemon in the lists shouldn't look like that. If you want to make a better Arceus article you can do so on your Userspace. DougsTech's rollback privileges
Over the past few hours, several editors have warned DougsTech about his "mistakes" while using rollback with Huggle, and he continues to make those "mistakes". I think it may be time to revoke DougsTech's rollback privileges until he can learn to use them properly. What do you think? Hello J. delanoy. I am very interested in your chess board and actually tried to pinch it. When I copied and pasted it to my own page I couldn't change it to my own name, so I am very cheekily asking you if it is possible and if you could tell me how to go about it. I reverted your edit on Catholic sex abuse cases.
I think it is a grammar & word choice issue--the accused priests may be sexually deviant, but they may have committed abuse. I thought there might be an issue because being deviant is less objectionable that actually committing abuse against children, so I deliberately did not make it a minor edit. If you disagree, lets discuss it on the talk page. One of the biggest problems in discussing loaded issues like this is sloppy language--"What is this person really saying?" Vandalism warnings
Hi. I am monitoring the Leaning Tower of Pisa article, as you have been recently. A fair lot of vandalism happens there, as you see, and I'm not sure whether to ask for semi-protection again. Anyway.
I see that you put warnings into a vandal's talk page. Can only administrators do that? Can I too, if I happen to revert blatant vandalism? Is there a central information page for this kind of interventions and/or a standard way to ask admins for blocking a repeating vandal?

Kerr lake edit
I am curious why you chose to remove the added link to the Bugg's Island Lake web site. I went to the linked site and think it excellently provides information regarding fishing on Kerr Lake. Since fishing is one of the most popular recreational events on this man-made reservoir, I think the link expands knowledge directly related to the Wiki article. - The user who added the link also added links to several other pages. External links on Wikipedia must add something encyclopedic to the article, and adding links pointing at the same domain to many articles is usually viewed as spamming. Excuse us, J.delanoy, but there has been questionable editing on Hurricane Georges' Impact section-whosoever performed the edits may have performed dubious grammar and not-good changing across the Impact areas. We've notified Cyclonebiskit and raised this issue on the talk areas of Hurricane Georges, but nobody responded about this as of yet. Our class is studying weather, storms or drought included-we cannot print pages with questionable edits, grammars or improper changes. Is there something you could do about this? Macedonia evidence
In your evidence you have forgotten Macedonia (region) hits. Keep in mind that the hits come mainly from Republic of Macedonia (see my response to Fut.Perf. about that). That is true for the organic traffic from Google but could also be true for Wikipedia itself if that reflects the regional interest to the search term "Macedonia" in general internet usage (no reason to think that it doesn't). - Even if you had any way at all of verifying your claims (which you don't), I do not care where the hits for Macedonia (the country) originate from, it makes no difference whatsoever. The issue I am addressing with my evidence is "What are most people looking for when they search for Macedonia". That is independent of anything else, since the utility of the navigational structure is only dependent on what people are looking for, not on where those people are located, or anything else. There are many places named "United States", but our article United States is about the United States of America. Unquestionably most people looking at this article are from the United States of America. Who cares? The navigational structure is successful.
- With regard to Macedonia (region), I am not going to include that in my evidence, simply because it has way too many incoming links to be able to determine with any degree of accuracy how many page-views are coming from Macedonia. Macedonia (Greece) also has too many in my opinion, but again, I don't really care. In any case, Macedonia (Greece) has just under twice as many incoming links as the most that any of the other three articles I linked to has. Macedonia (region) has twice as many as all three of those articles combined. That is way too much of a statistical aberration to be even remotely useful, far more so than even the (Greece) article. Also, as evidenced by the fact that I overlooked both the (Greece) article and the (region) one, and John Carter apparently overlooked the (region) article, it is obvious that a far smaller percentage of page-views for these pages originate on Macedonia than the three I originally linked to, since they are no where near as conspicuous as the hatnote links; the latter is what people would instinctively click on if they got to an article and did not find what they were looking for.
- The only way to settle this issue conclusively would be to create several temporary redirects, and point the links on Macedonia to these redirects. I considered doing this, but I decided not to for a very good reason. Page-view counts are very, very easily manipulated, as they are absolutely untraceable (unless you are a dev, and even then...) and many macros and browser add-ons exist to automatically reload pages. It would be impossible for me to change those links without people noticing, and I would have no choice but to explain myself, which would absolutely unquestionably result in people trying to skew my results. I wanted a real sample, so I did not say anything about what I was going to do.
- Does all this mean that my data is meaningless? Perhaps, but I do not think so. If someone went to Macedonia looking for info about the Greek province or the geographical region, they would not read the entire first section and click on the link to Macedonia (region) and/or Macedonia (Greece). - First, your notes about Georgia are totally irrelevant. For one thing, we do not suddenly change our navigational structure just because of a current event. Second, Georgia is a disambiguation page. This is because as a long-term trend , neither the country nor the state has a clear majority of visitors, unlike Macedonia, which has somewhere around 500% of visitors looking for info about the modern country.
- I am not entirely sure why you linked to Google trends. They show that worldwide statistics are remarkably similar to the US statistics in terms of categories. In terms of country of origin, of course people are more likely to search for info about their own country than other ones. That should be obvious. And as I explained before and will do again, for my arguments, it does not matter. My evidence is only concerned with making the navigational structure as easy to use as possible for as many people as possible.
- The English language Wikipedia is written for English speakers, and it follows the norms of the English speaking world. I don't care if Google directs hundreds of people here from around the world. That is not our problem. And even if it is our problem, I. do. not. care. Full stop. I have absolutely zero interest in arguing this with you, as I have had it about up to here with this mess. Wikipedia Admin Scam
You may recall that you assisted me a while back in closing an old account under another user name. Today I received an e-mail from "The Wikipedia Freedom Fighters" purporting to be Wikipedia e-mail, but it was actually from a gmail account. The sender was requesting, since the old account is no longer in use, that I "donate" the account to the "Wikipedia Freedom Fighters" by sending them my login information. It appears that there is some kind of scam going on with Wikipedia admin accounts. I did not and will not reply to the e-mail, but I'm not sure if anything else should be done. Languishing page move
Hi again, JD. I wonder if you could lend an ear and maybe a hand. We've got hard-won consensus that was a long time in coming at Talk:Car accident to change the article title from Car accident to Traffic collision, because "accident" is not neutral — it connotes fault, inevitability, and/or unpredictability. "Collision", on the other hand, has no connotation at all; it just means two or more objects colliding. Also, collisions often involve vehicles other than cars, and/or pedestrians. So "car accident" is not only not neutral, but is also not appropriately broad in scope to represent the article.
Once consensus was attained and the discussion left open for several days to make sure, I went to make the move, but was thwarted by the existence of a redirect page at Traffic collision (which points at Car accident). I placed a request for move five days ago, on which there's been no action, but it did seem to draw the attention of an apparently tendentious editor who appears to wish to spoil the consensus with his lone (IMO spurious) dissent. It is my understanding and experience that consensus does not require unanimity; would you mind please commenting on that and taking a look at the discussion? Hi J. I'm seeking your opinion (and corrective action if necessary) on this because you've cruised by this page recently (to revert vandalism) and seem to have a handle on the ins and outs of Wikipedia. Today, without any discussion, Humphreys7 moved the article about the cat from Snow Leopard to Snow Leopard (Cat) on the basis that "Mac OS X v10.6 deserves the redirect". This seems quite ridiculous to me since the OS is named after the cat, and I'm sure that the majority of users who search for "Snow Leopard" would be looking for the cat and not the OS. There was already a template pointing people to either the OS or the book if that was what they were actually looking for. Reporting an edit war
An edit war in going on here, at the article for Resident Evil 5. There's an extremely controversial (yet admittedly insignificant) issue regarding the possible death of the main antagonist, but the game is never absolutely clear as to this death; it leaves it ambiguous. We reached a good agreement that if the game leaves his fate ambiguous, that's the best we can do as well to imply that he could have died, but not confirm or deny it. Anyways, it's well and good except for a user keeps coming and reverting the plot, saying that the character was decapitated (this is absolutely uncertain in the game), and that he died. He refuses to listen about the talk page agreement, and he keeps reverting particularly me and one other editor, calling us, for example, "pathetic fanboy," "biased fanboy," etc, etc, using profanity quite a bit. The user is an IP, actually a couple of different IPs, but clearly the same user, evidenced by similar IPs and almost identical edit summaries. Anyways, he's being quite rude, he's violated the 3RR rule, and he's refusing to go to the talk page to debate it. He wants it his way, and that's detrimental. I don't know how to deal with this right now, but I know that you're an admin who has helped me quite a few times in the past, so if you could get to this issue at your next convenience, I would really appreciate it. --The Guy complain edits 20:33, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Your Macedonia statistics
Thanks for taking the trouble with the pageview statistics ([6]). Just a note: For several of the entries, especially the country entry, you need to add up the page views for the different redirects. Most readers of the country article still come to it through the Republic of Macedonia redirect (plus a few more through yet other redirects), because that is still where most internal wikilinks are piped to and what gets served up by Google, and those don't register as page view hits on Macedonia itself but are treated separately in the stats.grok.se figures. With all significant redirects taken together, the statistics of actual readership per article is roughly (per day): 4,200 for the country, 750 for ancient Macedon, 400 for Greece, 250 for the region, 100 for the dab page (since the move). 1,200 per day is the average number of people who come in through plain "Macedonia" in the search box (who used to be directed to the dab page previously and now end up as part of the 4,200 on the country page.) - Well, in my data, I was trying to show that most people searching for the term "Macedonia" in general are intending to find info about the modern country. I didn't include the pageviews from Republic of Macedonia because people searching for that exact term or following a direct link to the redirect are unquestionably looking for info about the modern country, and including those statistics would not give an accurate picture about what people are looking for when they search for simply "Macedonia". If it interests you, I can make another table that includes pageviews for RoM and its redirects, but as I said, my data is attempting to deal with people who are not absolutely certain what they are looking for. - Ah, thanks for the clarification. I agree it makes good sense to interpret the number of Macedonia hits as directly reflecting the number of (potentially undecided) readers coming in through the search box. Unfortunately, your statistics has a big unknown insofar as we don't know how many people are coming to Macedonia (Greece) and Macedonia (region) through other means, especially through regular internal wikilinks, so reconstructing the disambiguation traffic is quite difficult. The real proportion of readers interested in the country is probably higher. My own idea to reach an estimation was the following. If A is the number of plain "Macedonia" search box users (constant before and after the page move), B is the number of users ending up at "Republic of Macedonia" before the page move, and C is the number of "Republic of Macedonia" readers after the page move, then A + C - B should correspond to the number of false hits now, i.e. those users who now end up at the country page but really wanted something else. Unfortunately, this calculation only works if we can assume that the true overall interest in the country page remains constant, which will only be a safe assumption to make over the average of a much longer time period, because interest in the country is strongly affected by day-to-day factors, including the current wikipedia dispute itself. I'm trying to insert a reference to a similar dish from Sarawak (Malaysia) named Umai by the indigenous Melanau fishermen who are said to have invented it. As a Sarawakian, I have many fond memories of this wonderful dish which is basically raw fish marinated with a sour fruit or limes, onions, chillies and salt. Absolutely delicious. To be honest I can't find any other good pictures of Tom from 2009, that is why I used that one. Besides, I gave credit to the artist and Mark himself said we could use it only if we gave credit to Megan Thompson, which I did. So with what he said I figured we were allow to use it for free. So I brought to wikipedia and put it on both Mark's and Tom's pages. You can see it in this link I am posting. I am sorry for bothering you, I just think I have the right credentials for this picture to be on here. Again, I am sorry for bothering you. I just want this picture to stay up until like after Blink tours and 2010 comes up and I can get another pic up... But then I think I wont want to because I fought to keep this one up.

To a fellow-patroller
Hi J.delanoy. I do a fair amount of quality-control on Wikipedia - maybe you've spotted 1 or 2 warnings I've issued in the past. Of course I have noted that you do a LOT of such patrolling. We both know the system usually works very well, provided users are given fair and appropriate, escalating warnings, eventually being reported if they continue.
But it seems it can happen that the odd user is harder to rein in. Such is the case I fear with this user - would you say I've given them sufficient, clear warnings?
However, to my surprise, when | I duly reported them, a single overseer apparently dismissed all my concerns in short shrift.
I think that, with your background, you too may have a contribution to make to what I had hoped might be a greater debate?

Hello sir- I am confused as to why you saw fit to remove Douglas Williams from the wiki entries. You cite lack of notability, yet he is featured in the Guinness Book of World Records, having grown the world's longest nipple hair. He is too a talented artist, and has given several inspirational radio and print interviews. He deserves the added "notability" of his own wiki page. I cannot see why it was necessary for you to remove him, and to cite your reasons for doing so, other than to shame and humiliate him. - The article was deleted as an expired PROD, or proposed deletion. A tag proposing the article for deletion was on the article for seven days. In that time any editor, including the article's creator was allowed to remove the proposed deletion tag. Since they did not, the article can be deleted by any administrator with no discussion. IP user
Hi, you recently reverted an IP user who removed an AfD notice. I've been watching this user for a while, since they began editing several pages created by another user. I've suspicions of sockpuppetry, see these user contributions for why:[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. On another of the pages, a school, they've reverted my edits that tidied the page, added a no sources notice etc. See [20] and [21]. Quick question about our school IP

Our school IP was banned till April 2009. However, without our school commiting another offence you re-ban our IP right through to September 2010? I don't get why this school gets another ban when they had done the time for their bad action... (yes i know schools usually vandalise but it still doesn't set a good justice example when the IP gets banned for 17 months after serving out the time for the crime ;))

I need some advice
I've been monitoring and cleaning the Combat Arms for a long time now, and I'm wondering: In the list of gameplay modes, is it worthy to mention modes that are generally not available, for example the "Snowball fight" whic hseems to be only accessible during the Christmas holidays? - Heh, true enough. Actually I'm not really happy with the (over)use of words such as "legend" in this type of article, as they do often tend to the POV side and actually mean "anyone remotely well known locally", but didn't want to do anything controversial to a subject I didn't know much about. Excuse me sir
I recently received a message from you, half a second after editing (minor edit) an introduction of a non-protected article (at least, there was no mention of it). It stated that my edit was unconstructive and thus vandalism.
You CANNOT decide in half a second whether my edit is constructive or not, not without discussing it first in the discussion page as I did:
- I read ALL the discussion page which was very divided about the need to change the introduction. As the subject divided equally the users in two, I decided to count the sources quoted from dictionaries and encyclopedias and found that there were 19 sources in favor of an introduction change to 1 opposing it.
- One of the users proposed an alternative introduction that was seconded by 4 users including himself to 2 users opposing it (all of this can be checked at Talk:Americas) which is why I decided to replace the existing introduction by the new one approved by the majority.
- And as I said, half a second after I edited the page, I received your message and my edit was reverted with no further explanation regardless of the following Wikipedia Policies:
- "Revert vandalism on sight, but revert a good faith edit only as a last resort. Edit warring is prohibited."
- "Any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism. Even harmful edits that are not explicitly made in bad faith are not vandalism. For example, adding a controversial personal opinion to an article once is not vandalism."
This being said, as I cannot edit the article because of the threat of being considered a vandal, hopefully you will change the article to the version "18:32, 28 May 2009 Sinekonata (talk | contribs) (74,791 bytes) (→(User)'s views on introduction text)" or please explain why. --Sinekonata (talk) 20:57, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

To be able to Put the name bourbon on the bottle, the whiskey must be made in Kentucky. Check this out
So I was checking out Tom DeLonge's wiki page and edit history out of fear there was vandalism, and surprise, surprise, there was. Anyway I checked out one vandal's records and for some odd reason he wasn't reported, unless he was and he deleted it. Here they are Max3091

Should the edits from 116.71.42.223 be deleted from the log? If that is a real phone number (the IP is from Pakistan and I am unfamiliar with the Pakistani phone system) then that could be a privacy violation.
