Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, Ian.Kirkland76. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Draft:Ian Firth, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Theroadislong (talk) 21:16, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for the 'clean up' editing - it is very helpful to see how you approached this. I will continue to try to improve it.
I am aware of the dangers of conflict of interest - in my career as a professional engineer. I will do my utmost to avoid creating them.
Thank you

Bingo!
[edit]- Theroadislong - And there we go. The reviewer's now Accepted him. Many congratulations. The sources should still be sorted, however. Do give me a shout if you need any help. Happy editing. KJP1 (talk) 21:31, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. I appreciate your help. I hope I have succeeded in sorting out the references now.
With regard to COI I should state that Ian Firth was one of my students in the 1970s but there is no COI. I have followed his career at a distance. We are still acquainted since we are both Fellows of the same professional organisation and have been honoured to be former Presidents but there is no other technical, commercial or business relationship. There is no question of remuneration or other type of reward. I have striven to make the biography of Firth objective and unbiased. Firth is, as you say, eminently notable as a structural engineer and bridge designer. We are both SME or domain experts in structural engineering due to our professional qualifications and experience.

I am puzzled and I humbly ask you to reconsider. Please tell me what is unreliable about the sources of the references for this page. One is international professional body for structural engineers with members in over 100 countries. Are you seriously suggesting that is not a reliable source? Another is the accrediting body for civil engineering University courses here in the UK and some others worldwide. Yet another is the University of Surrey. Please enlighten me why these sources are unreliable. It seems to me that you are exercising your editorial powers without proper duty of care as to the judgments you are making. Forgive me if I am misinterpreting you. Please reconsider.

[edit]Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists, and if it does not, from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Ian.Kirkland76. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Ian.Kirkland76|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Praxidicae (talk) 16:07, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
All I can say is that you are completely wrong. Why would you make such assertions without any evidence? Simply because I am writing about structural engineers? They are an under appreciated profession. Engineers deserve a much greater public profile.

[edit]Hello, I've noticed that you have created multiple drafts in your sandbox over time and that some of these have been moved to draftspace as it is the preferred location for WP:AFC creations. Might I suggest that you use the article wizard to create future drafts directly into draftspace. This will avoid future complications following page moves ('leftover' redirects and double redirects etc.). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 17:24, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
