Administrators' newsletter – January 2019
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).
- There are a number of new or changed speedy deletion criteria, each previously part of WP:CSD#G6:
- G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
- R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
- G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.
- The Wikimedia Foundation now requires all interface administrators to enable two-factor authentication.
- Members of the Bot Approvals Group (BAG) are now subject to an activity requirement. After two years without any bot-related activity (e.g. operating a bot, posting on a bot-related talk page), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice.
- Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
- At least 8 characters in length
- Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
- Different from their username
- User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
- Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
- {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.
- Following the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: AGK, Courcelles, GorillaWarfare, Joe Roe, Mkdw, SilkTork.
- Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
- Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.
You just changed the description of a memorial[?] in Arceuil from "Parc Erik Satie" to "Pharmac Erik Satie". Can you explain the basis for this? (What does "Pharmac" even mean?) I was going to change it back, but a bit of searching reveals no evidence for either name, outside obvious copies from WP. There is a "rue Erik Satie", which is a pedestrian route, in among other composers' streets (Erik Honegger and Darius Milhaud), but googe maps doesn't suggest anything that meets the description given. Do you know any more about it? Thanks. Imaginatorium (talk) 08:56, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Imaginatorium: I thought I had made a mistake with AWB "Parc" and "Pharmac", so thanks for telling me where it was. I self-reverted, and added {{not a typo}}.
- Unfortunately, I can't help with researching what "Parc" and "Pharmac" actually mean, but I doubt "Pharmac" is any more correct than "Parc". That's why I self-reverted, add the notatypo template, etc. While it's being figured out, AWB will skip "correcting" Parc to Pharmac in Erik Satie, at least. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 09:04, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks. I did find a very plausible site [1] with a photo and description of 'parc Erik Satie', so I'm sure that is correct. I do wonder how it could ever be correct to change "parc", which is the french for "Park", as in a small patch of green in a city to "Pharmac", which is a fragment of "Pharmacy", but nothing else I could find...? Imaginatorium (talk) 09:13, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Imaginatorium: Yeah, I'm not sure why it'd have to be changed to "Pharmac", either. Odd. I suppose we find ourselves in a rare situation. I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 09:41, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Hello,
I’m King, a current Junior at Stanford University. You’ve spent many years on Wikipedia and you also mentioned that you use semi-automated tools to contribute. I am curious what you think about the current system of flagging articles and issues and how it could be optimized. Maybe Machine Learning tools could be implemented? I can also be reached at iamking-at-stanford-dt-edu. (Formatted weirdly to protect myself from bots) Would love to hear from you either on Wikipedia talk or via email. Thank you for your time!
P.S. I grew up using Wikipedia and would love to have the opportunity to contribute back to this community-powered knowledge base. Speaking with you would be greatly advantageous. Thank you! (You also edited one of my articles a while back and welcomed me to Wikipedia!) :)
Kingalandydy (talk) 05:00, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Kingalandydy: While bots might eventually learn how to tag/untag articles with issues, I'd also think that would be several years off. I also have concerns that any mishaps could potentially cause a lot of damage to potentially hundreds of thousands of articles. It'll be a while.

Gackt
[edit]Hi! I don't really understand why you are removing wikilinks. This article is insanely long. Even if a link appeared in the introduction, that's pretty far enough for anyone who is interested in a specific period, for example. The purpose of wikilinks is to give the reader an opportunity to read about other existing articles and thus grow the networking. I think that linking the same article two-three sections apart is pretty much fine. Especially if they are under different main headings. Teemeah 편지 (letter) 21:29, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Teemeah: I'd think someone who read the article would at least read the introduction and first section or two, but I just looked at the article and see your point. A message from 38.104.89.250
[edit]I created a section for Criticism of Naomi Klein (admittedly it needs more content, I didn't have time. You improperly deleted based upon a purported violation of the Neutral Point of View policy/requirement (NPOV). The NPOV provides, in part: All encyclopedic content on Wikipedia must be written from a neutral point of view (NPOV), which means representing fairly, proportionately, and, as far as possible, without editorial bias, all of the significant views that have been published by reliable sources on a topic.
Any article about as prominent and controversial a person/public intellectual as Naomi Klein that lacks any discussion of the criticisms of her work and ideas, lacks all of the significant views on this topic.
A fair accounting of the criticism a public intellectual has received is not biased; It is informative and necessary for a complete, informative, and neutral article.
38.104.89.250 (talk) 00:21, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- Not only did you not cite any of your edit, you also created a seperate 'criticism' section; perhaps it's better to integrate any criticism of any article, espicially a living person to the rest of the article to the best of your ability, only giving in to a (referenced!) criticism section as an indication that you are not quite done with that. I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 00:25, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
Removal of 'disgraced' from Jeffrey Webb.
[edit]How has this been removed on the basis of my personal opinion? He is objectively a 'disgraced' individual by definition. Including the adjective makes the article more informative.

A message from AlluraofAltea
[edit]Hey there,
I'm new and joined Wikipedia for educational purposes since I have been benefitting alot from this site, while not having an account.
But when I look up a topic some times, I don't find what I'm looking for.
For example, I searched "Results or Effects of Genetic Mutations in the Human Body" but failed to find anything in less than five pages. I don't really have enough time to go to different sites and open different pages because my finals start in the beginning of March.
So I hope you'll consider my future requests and have this one created as soon as possible.
I would be forever grateful.

[edit]Hello. Help assess the quality of the article Maureen Wroblewitz. Thanks you. Futhuy (talk) 02:43, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Futhuy: It's classified as start class, which is accurate, or perhaps a bit generous. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 02:45, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
- You can nominate it for Wikipedia: Good article nominations. Thanks you. Futhuy (talk) 02:47, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Futhuy: It's nowhere near ready for being a good article. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 02:48, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
- Futhuy has been spamming talk pages with similar requests. [2] Mvcg66b3r (talk) 03:08, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

The OP is a sock of Haiyenslna. — JJMC89 (T·C) 03:13, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Mvcg66b3r and JJMC89: (edit conflict) Then it's a good thing that I left a request on the talk page to reject Futhuys' request. I don't regret assuming their good faith, but it's too bad they're a sockpuppet and needed to be blocked. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 03:16, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

thanks for reviewing my article I'm curious what changes I can make to get a approval Lpayne309 (talk) 21:40, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Lpayne309: You need to do two things. The most important thing is to add reliable sources; an easy guide to what we consider to be both reliable and proving of notability is here. The other thing you need to do is to improve the grammar and clarity of the article. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 01:37, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
Another Article for Deletion?
[edit]Greetings. I notice that you have nominated Alloy Apparel & Accessories for deletion. The same editor also created a very similar article for CaaStle, and I was considering whether it should also be nominated for deletion. For now I have tagged it with Advert, but would appreciate your comments on whether to take it to AfD. Gronk Oz (talk) 15:14, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Hi @Gronk Oz: CaaStle looks to be exceptionally promotional, and even if it ends up being kept I think it should be merged into Gwynnie Bee, an article on the same subject (which is linked from CaaStle, for some reason!) I'd AfD it on that basis. -- a. get in the spam hole | get nosey 16:06, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

Previously mangled section header
[edit]omg im so sorry lol we share an account for wikipedia and my friend mason was on it. sorry again. Bobrossisgreat (talk) 15:05, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Bobrossisgreat: Shared accounts are actually against Wikipedia policy, and this is one very big reason why. Tell Mason to get his own account. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 15:07, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
Histmerge
[edit]Hey I'm not sure if it was accidental or not but several of your histmerge requests today are not valid - most are the creator moving the draft into mainspace and there is nothing to merge, or they're the only editor, so it's also not really a reason to merge. Praxidicae (talk) 17:56, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Praxidicae: Anyway to deal with such copy-and-paste moves, then? I've been told they're not CSDable under being a duplicate topic. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 01:38, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
