[edit]

I am sorry about the gallary and i will not do it again Thank you for telling me.

you say "full permission to Wikipedia is not good enough, needs to be released under a free license." i can contact the The World Coin Gallery owner to get the free license, if you tell me how. Kingturtle 00:53, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. All of the details, as well as several examples, are spelled out at Wikipedia:Example requests for permission. --Hetar 03:08, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don Norris has sent me an email and CCed permissions@wikimedia.org. it reads:

I hereby agree to grant Wikimedia full permission to use any coin images from my webpages at worldcoingallery.com under terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. Don Norris owner of http://worldcoingallery.com

what do i do with this? Kingturtle 21:17, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, he needs to license those images under the GNU Free Documentation for use by anyone. Due to the fact that we license/sell/distribute our content to different entities, permission specific to Wikipedia is not good enough. Once you get him to grant the correct permissions, just have him send an email to yourself and to permissions AT wikimedia DOT org. --Hetar 03:48, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hmmm. maybe the letter samples at Wikipedia:Example requests for permission need some rewording. we were trying to follow closely what it told us to do. can you write out exactly word-for-word what he needs to say in his email? Kingturtle 23:25, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can see all the letters are worded correctly. They all mention that the material needs to be licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) so that anyone can modify it. A simple statement like the following should work:

I BLANK hereby release all images on my website WEBSITEADDRESS under the GNU Free Documentation (GFDL) license. I understand that this means that although I will retain the copyright and authorship of my work, I am granting permission for all others (not just Wikipedia) to use, copy, and share these materials freely—and even potentially use them commercially—as long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, or try to prevent others from using or copying them freely.

Hey Hetar! I noticed that you placed a "criteria for speedy deletion" label on the Life of Riley page that I recently created. White Crane Gung Fu SF

[edit]

Why did you remove the link? M & L —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Whitecrane (talkcontribs) .

Because Wikipedia is not an external link repository, and because you should not add links to a website that you own, maintain, or are associated with. This is because of neutrality and point-of-view concerns; neutrality is an important objective at Wikipedia, and a difficult one. If it is relevant and informative, mention it on the talk page and let other — neutral — Wikipedia editors decide whether to add the link. --Hetar 02:07, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jeff Hart and The Ruins

[edit]

I own http://www.ipass.net/jhart/jh02bio.htm I based the band's history on the bio page. No copyright infringement. Thank you. Nello61 03:18, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If such is the case, and you want your material to be used on Wikipedia, then you must do the following:
  • Make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL at the site of the original publication.
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions at wikimedia dot org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation.
--Hetar 05:02, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Though I do own the copyright to the material in question and your suggestions are more than helpful, and I'm still getting my bearings with Wikipedia. In the meantime I had written a temp page which I believe is much more readable and will completely avoid the copyright issue and is hopefully more interesting. You will also find it more in line with the narrower subject matter linked from the power pop entry that sent me to Wikipedia originally (and made me aware of this unwritten Jeff Hart and the Ruins entry). This is the page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jeff_Hart_and_the_Ruins/Temp I'll start over and hopefully this is a better start. Thanks for your assistance Nello61 05:41, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An administrator will eventually look at your temp page and replace the main article with it if it meets our copyright and other guidelines. Add some reliable sources and you'll even have a decent article. --Hetar 06:18, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Hetar!

I just added some of my hometown talent to the Power Pop list. One of those buddies took it upon himself to seize the opportunity and get the record straight.

Ever heard the funny story about how John Fogerty got suied for plagerizing himself?

I think Jeff can do what he wishes with the content of his own website (which was created and administered pretty much by his lonesome, sans hosting service, if memory serves...). 67.77.130.247 04:12, 13 August 2006 (UTC)Popster506[reply]

Img Question

[edit]

Hi there,

Can you clarify the issue with this image? [1] Thanks, --Palffy 05:14, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Typically photos that you use the promophoto tag should come from an authorized promotion source, such as an official press kit. Such is obviously not the case with this foto, as it has a clear copyright watermark on it.
  2. I can't understand the text at www.fcstal.lg.ua but I am assuming it is some sort of press agency. If this is the case , it qualifies for counterxample #5 at WP:FU.
  3. It should be possible (and not that difficult) to obtain a non-fair use or "free" licensed image of the stadium, making any claim of fair use rather difficult.

--Hetar 05:36, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, www.fcstal.lg.ua is actually the official site of FC Stal Alchevsk, the football club to which the stadium in question belongs to. Would you suggest that I use one without the tag for wikipedia? (such as any of the ones found here?) --Palffy 06:27, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest that you use one without the tag, and that you license it under a free license, such as the GFDL. --Hetar 06:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done, I think.. --Palffy 10:09, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I wouldnt usually delete writings from the help desk however what i deleted was my question i had just written and then realized the question was already asked and answered.

Que? 18:52, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's still important that you leave it there, other users often benefit from reading the questions and their answers. --Hetar 19:11, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you dispute the fair use status of this image? I've asked a few admin on IRC and the seem to thing it's ok on James J Smith, except one person mentioned there might have been mention by someone else of AP images not being suitable (couldn't remember why or where though). Are you able to clarify the position? Petros471 16:27, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is a perfect example of images that do not qualify for fair use (#5) from WP:FU, "A photo from a press agency (e.g. Reuters, AP), not so famous as to be iconic, to illustrate an article on the subject of the photo." Also, the subject is still alive, so it should be possible to obtain a free license photo. --Hetar 18:48, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so I take it I should re-remove it from the article and delete it then? I don't know if you do now (as you tagged that one a while back) but could you please put in the reason when adding {{Fair use disputed}} to help people learn why the image can't be used under fair use. What was the name and website of Wikipedian effort to create a global Biography for every person in the world? Stanton BG 12:36, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly do you mean by a "global biography"? If you just mean a normal biography for everyone in the world, I'm not even sure if such a project ever existed around here. I know that currently many Wikipedians agree that there are a large majority of people who do not merit a biography/article on Wikipedia (see WP:BIO). ok so first see World temperature extremes

one person brought it to my attention and I didn't think it was even close to right so i researched it and I found

http://members.iinet.com.au/~jacob/worldtp.html doesn't confirm

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/globalextremes.html NOAA doesn't confirm

http://www.extremescience.com/hottest.htm doesn't confirm, but does confirm what i said...lol

there is also that doesn't confirm Temperature extreme if you read the article it says that temperatures recorded inside forest fires do not count...hmm

http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/scienceques2001/20020524.htm Nasa says no too

http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/2389 another no

Extremes on Earth says different

what do I do? the guy who added it is ademant that its true...he has no listed source, but the numbers a crazy comparitively...not an issue of different means of collecting the numbers or standards type of thing...

Hi, does not a solution tell you 'howto' information? Solutions to secure wireless LAN tell people how to go about securing them, does it not? I propose we change the heading of the section to something like 'Security options'. —Raanoo 05:21, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thats fine. The section wasn't really a howto, at least in the negative sense. Normal how to problems arise when we are stepping out instructions for various tasks, and including too much detail. Explaining how certain tasks are done, still has value, as long as its not excessive in detail. A good example of this is the explanation of how embalming is done in the Embalming article. --Hetar 05:27, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To me no preference votes go to the one that has more support, which is by far edit 1 in this case. -Ravedave (help name my baby) 05:42, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that. However, there is no "rule" that states which way 'no preference' votes must fall. --Hetar 05:46, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok then lets put this on hold and have people clarify. I'll post a message on FPC talk. If that doesnt clear it up in a day or two I'll message the neutral votes. Sound good? -Ravedave (help name my baby) 05:52, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Whiteballoon82.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Whiteballoon82.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks for uploading Image:Suethomas.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Avidlogo.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Avidlogo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Image source problem with Image:Avidlogo.png

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:Avidlogo.png. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 10:45, 12 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Golden Swirlie

[edit]

Your definition of the "swirlie" is great, but there is also the famous "golden swirlie", where the swirling toilet water is yellow due to urine. Maybe you could add that to your definition.

I got a good laugh out of the "swirlie" coming up on wikipedia. Thanks . . .

And we should not forget the disgusting "dirty swirly". You can guess what that variant of the "swirly" entails.

Completing the full list of swirlies in Wikipedia is a noble cause ! !

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:MovieGallery.gif

[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:MovieGallery.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 15:01, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I really don't know what to do with it, but if you were willing to help me with it, that would be great! If no one thinks it is worth it, I will just get rid of it. Fair use rationale for Image:Yelwiki.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Yelwiki.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Thanks for uploading Image:6304503873.01. SCLZZZZZZZ .jpg.

Proposed deletion of William Doerner (writer)

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article William Doerner (writer), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Orphan, low notability

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:30, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Notice

The file File:OtherHeaven.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Replaced by File:The Other Side of Heaven theatrical poster.png

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:00, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
