Pandurs

Hi! Thank you for taking time and effort to review Pandurs article. I trust I have addressed all concerns you stated in the GA review, the last among those being the definitive date on the portrait of the baron Trenck. Strictly speaking I could not track exact name of an author of the portrait, but an archived source (linked at the GA review page) indicates that the Bavarian Museums catalogue specified that the painting was dated on the back to the 1742. The date makes sense in terms of being made during Trenck's lifetime presumably in an area where he was (in)famous. If this is acceptable, then it would be safe to assume that the author of the painting died more than 70 years ago - if not, let me know and I'll see what else can be done. English Castles

Thanks for you comments re doing some work on English Castles.

Seeing some of the arial shots in the Olympics coverage got me inspired...

I am working on a Google Map as well (http://goo.gl/maps/CtrA5)

A couple of questions

1: I have added some citations to an article.. How do you get rid of the "citations needed" warning? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Warden_Castle)

2: I have created an article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Strings123/Bolbec_Castle) I assume I need to wait a few days before I find out if it can be posted.

3: Is there any way of linking the monument number in the Info rectangle at the upper right (Listing coordinates, construction materials etc., or is it better placed in the external links section at the end of the article?

4: I am adding links to the monument and Investigation History for each castle. The Victoria County History also seem to be quite helpful. Can this be placed as external links or is there a more logical place to put them.

5 Your thoughts on http://goo.gl/maps/CtrA5 and the info there would be helpful as well. I started to put qr codes on the info panels but they seem to take a lot of space without adding any additional info.

6. Can I remove Stub notice if I have added a few links and reworked some of the Information on a page (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cainhoe_Castle)

7. Is it possible to move this conversation to My talk pages, and what links do I have to invoke to notify you of the conversation taking place?

Agreed. By the way, if you end up seeing the Battleship film, watch out for the impressive 90+ degree turn near the end involving the battleship dropping the anchor and pivoting sideways across the ocean. Eh. Depends on the speed. If the battleship was going fast, it'd either snap the chain (likely) or drag the anchor for a ride until it hit something solid, when it would snap the chain. Those ships are big, and changing the direction of a 45,000 ton battleship would take a ridiculous amount of force. Maybe it'd be possible with a (small) destroyer, a really strong anchor chain, and a lot of luck, but I doubt it with a battleship... though granted, the movie producers weren't going for realism, and I'm sure it's a really cool scene. ;-) Ed ^{[talk] [majestic titan]} 10:07, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

I'd considered it in the past, although I suspect, judging from recent discussions around nominations, the community is seeking a broader "procedural" knowledge of policies than I possess. (Translated - I doubt I could answer the really tough questions!) A real blocker, however, is the recent involvement of the WMF and specifically Wikipedia in the politics surrounding US legislation on the internet; for various reasons, that would make it challenging for me to hold a formal position such as as admin. It depends on what you say you want to work in. I said I was going to work at DYK and could answer questions about it (I never did actually do that though... unintentional). If you say AfD, you should have some experience. If you say RfPP, you should be able to answer some questions about it. Etc. :-) I had forgotten about that. Is it really that big of a deal? I mean, anyone can be a member of a website; you could always include a declaration that you don't support Wikipedia becoming political because of the NPOV policy, or something similar. Just my two cents – obviously I don't know what line of work you are in. If you ever change your mind, I'd be happy to nominate you if you want...! Castles

Would you mind casting an eye over Caludon Castle? It caught my eye while working on Grade I listed buildings. I've done all I can with the resources I've been able to find online (which is more than I was expecting). I'm planning to go into the Coventry History Centre at some point to do some research on this and other Grade I listed buildings, so any suggestions for good books to look in for more information would be appreciated. I've done you a quick map for it and added that in. Further sources you might like:

• 2008 survey data, which revealed the probable form of the inner hall and the dimensions for various parts of the site.
• Mackenzie gives the early history of the site and a bit more of the documentary history. Mackenzie's reliable for this sort of thing.
• this gives some of the details of Berkeley entertaining there in 1600.
• The Victoria County History includes details of the castle's park and mill, plus some other bits of relevance.

General thoughts. The description of the licence to crenelate might need tweaking; by the 1300s, crenelating a manor house was at least as much about creating a political status symbol as it was about actual defences, whereas this article stressed the use of archery. The tracery windows are worth noting a little more prominently, perhaps, as this was a very fashionable status symbol at the time (compare and contrast with Kenilworth's, for example). The 1662 damage isn't strictly during the English Civil War; the damage occurs following the Restoration during the slighting after Charles II returns to the throne and takes revenge on heavily pro-Parliamentary locations such as Coventry. By this point, the intention is utterly political rather than military. I think it was the only permanent nobleman's residence in Coventry; noblemen hired temporary properties etc., but this was unique in being a permanent base. Apocalypse Tapestry

Why on earth has this article been deleted ??? The item which the article described is the largest woven tapestry in the world. I am about to (re-)create the article as "Apocalypse Tapestry" as this is the name it is commonly known as, amongst English speakers. The French use the plural (tapestries of the...). I'm very new to Wikipedia and am trying to learn everything and help and am worried about doing something wrong. I hope this isn't breaking etiquette. From what I understand, you undid the bit I added on the page for William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders about historical fiction and you said to see a note on "talk page". I think I missed that? I looked on my talk page and yours and I couldn't see anything. I was wondering what I did wrong? Is it okay to ask that here? I really want to help other people like myself, and I want to do a good job. If I made a mistake with this, I want to know what I did so I don't make it again. Hi, I think the article is ready for FA nomination. There are some details but they could be left to a peer review.

To make it more stable, I have added some <!----> in the code about Canadian vs. US. spelling (checked in MS Word). I have also got a semi-protection, though only for a week.

I took part of the FAR for Sinking of the RMS Titanic; in my view, the prose got worse during the process because reviewers wanted additions which the authors struggled to fit in. I've been distracted by real life, and also by a few ArbCom things, but I've finally got around to finishing the GA review. Lovely article, easily meets GA criteria apart from containing a little too much information in places, and too many images, and the captions being at times too long. Warwick Castle

Hi. I'm the editor who added the bit about heritage tourism which you've removed. Personally, I'm not too fussy as long as there is some brief mention of its present role as a tourist venue, as is developed in a later section. My authority for saying "one of the best" is ref. No. 51 below, which lists Warwick Castle as one of the UK's "top 10" historic houses and monuments. Cheers, Bjenks (talk) 20:01, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Probably best followed up on the article talk page, but the bit I removed was "the Tussauds Group which developed it into one of Britain's best heritage tourism venues." The BBC article doesn't talk about Tussard's role in developing the castle as a tourist location, and the article main space merely notes it being bought by the group. There's also a different between the BBC article and what's actually said in the article, which might be worth checking. The article says that "In 2001, Warwick Castle was named one of Britain's "Top 10 historic houses and monuments" by the British Tourist Authority; the list included Tower of London, Stonehenge, and Edinburgh Castle." The article used as a references notes a list of the "the top 20 tourist attractions" (unspecified) from the BTA, but it not all clear to me that the "top 10 historic houses and monuments" listed by the BBC in the sidebar are the BTA's own "top 10" list or the BBC's choice from the wider list of 20, or something else again. An "historic house and monument" is also different from a heritage tourism venue (e.g. the Jorvik centre is a heritage tourism venue, but isn't a historic house or monument). Agree! BTW, for visitor stats I'd recommend - if you haven't come across them already - ALVA and Visit England. They're only partial, but they can be quite useful and are neutral, reliable sources. I've only just found it - and it may not be classed as a "reliable source" for our purposes - but I did enjoy this thesis by Elizabeth Bishop; there's an interesting bit on Warwick and there's a whole bit on statistics as well. I think it should work well at FAC, although it would be worth Cdtew adding in a map or two to illustrate some of the events. It's a bit out of my specialist area of expertise (!), but I've suggested one more source for the early 20th century. There are probably some local publications produced around North Carolina as well, but they're not showing up on JSTOR et al. It's nice to see more writing in this area of milhist!
