Teahouse talkback: you've got messages!
[edit]Please note that all old questions are archived after 2-3 days of inactivity. Message added by Theroadislong (talk) 19:51, 15 June 2020 (UTC). (You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{teahouse talkback}} template).
Getting you busy
[edit]OK, Hamuyi. Following your positive response to my question to you at the Teahouse, it would be really good to get you actively editing and contributing something here. I see you've made 112 posts to the Teahouse, asking a myriad of question, yet made just 2 edits to mainspace articles!
I have seen this pattern of editing activity before, and, unless focussed, it not only wastes everyone's time here, but it usually ends up with the new editor getting blocked, as described at WP:NOTHERE. I would, if I'm honest, quite like you to consider not asking so many questions at the Teahouse unless you really, genuinely need answers to something constructive and important. Most people learn here by following links and reading help pages for themselves, rather than expecting others to spoon-feed them information all the time.
So, from now on, I want you to visit Help:Menu each time you want to know something, and to try to work out how best to help yourself. Having the confidence and ability to find stuff out for oneself is a great feeling and a great skill to have as you go through life. Whenever I get stuck here, I think of a keyword that sums up the topic I'm stuck on (e.g. Categories), then I go to the Search box at the top of any page, type WP, followed by a colon, then by my keyword. eg WP:Categories. The "WP:" forces the search engine to look within Wikipedia's Help and Policy pages rather than in the encyclopaedia itself. Thus, you immediately arrive at Wikipedia:Categorization, but note the 'shortcuts' box at the top right. These give you memorable way to find the page again. In this case simply type WP:CATEGORY to get to the same page. Each help page has a 'See also' section at the bottom - this is great for finding related help pages if you didn't get what you needed from the first help page.
So, anyway, moving on: To help me find a few useful things for you to do (and Wikipedia editing is not for everybody), I'd like you to tell me a little about yourself. BUT: you must NOT reveal anything here that identifies you personally, especially if you are, as I would guess, a minor. See WP:YOUNG for how we aim to protect the interests of young people. I'm really interested to know what brought you here, what your hobbies and interests are, and perhaps ask you how you think you might be able to contribute. We need to forget the idea of creating new articles, and think small steps - like leaning to drive a car (without crashing it). Are you good at spelling, or spotting bad grammar? Do you like sport-related articles, films or TV and what pages have you found that you either liked or didn't like. What places have you visited in real life and have you looked at articles about things near where you live, and what did you notice was missing from those pages? How would you set about correcting those gaps? Anything you can tell me about what motivates you in life might help us find something useful and rewarding for you to do, rather than just edit around aimlessly behind the scenes wasting your time and ours, when you could be helping build the world's greatest free encyclopaedia. Hello @Nick Moyes:, This was long to read, and motvational.
Here is what I like,
- Food
- Games
- Technology Coding (beginning)
(And yes I notice typos really fast)
- Drawing
- Getting (unexpected) suprises
- Nature
- sport related articles
(I dont gaps notice as easily)
- Movation and Compliants
- Eating
- Hands On Tech
I am good at spelling
- To decarate
(Some words I can't spell at all.) Thank you for giving me info (on··>Help:Menu) I think that should be enough.
Always and thank you · Hamuyi (talk) 01:23, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll have a think on this for you.
- Meanwhile, will you undertake to stop constantly deleting all posts to your talk page? At the very least you should get them put into one archive, but only remove them after a month or two. This is an extremely unusual behaviour from any 'new' editor, as I think I mentioned somewhere before. Not only does it raise suspicions that you've something to hide, but it makes it much harder for someone who wants to help you to see and understand past activity and any issues that have arisen.
- Obviously routine messages about old Teahouse posts etc etc can go immediately, but I've decided I am not willing to spend my time with you if you're going to delete other people's posts, whether supportive or critical of your editing. You can see three months worth of message on my own fairly busy talk page, and the only things I remove are routine mass-messages/newsletters. I'd like you to do the same, please, and remove that rather daft sentence which only serves to confuse:
"I will delete messages that have been here for more than a week or less."
Let me know what you decide. Cheers, Nick Moyes (talk) 10:22, 16 June 2020 (UTC)- I do not no how to archive posts. I am trying to use a bot to do so.Hamuyi (talk) 15:36, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Do not edit?
[edit]At the top of this page (your talk page), you have DO NOT EDIT THIS TALK PAGE
. That is incompatible with the purpose of a talk page, which is for other editors to communicate with you, a necessary part of the co-operative nature of this project. Since I think you know that, you'll probably want to remove that to avoid people thinking you are not here for the same purpose as the rest of us. Thanks. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 05:56, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok. I will remove it. Hamuyi (talk) 14:50, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:What The Teahouse Is (On Wikipedia)
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice that the page you created, Draft:What The Teahouse Is (On Wikipedia), was tagged as a test page under section G2 of the criteria for speedy deletion and has been or soon may be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Theroadislong (talk) 08:20, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- I've deleted this, per our Teahouse discussion, but have copy/pasted the two lines of text it contained into your sandbox for you. Hope that was ok. Nick Moyes (talk) 10:09, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- That's fine. Hamuyi (talk) 14:49, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Concern
[edit]There is a growing concern among editors and Teahouse hosts that you are making no effort to contribute to the Wikipedia encyclopedia, but instead frequently post questions at Teahouse and on editors' Talk pages. And make frequent changes to your own User page and Talk page and Sandbox page and Sandbox Talk page. Editors with a similar non-article history have been blocked from Wikipedia - initially for a short period of time, but if not changing their ways, indefinitely. I strongly suggest you turn your attentions to improving articles. AsA. David notMD (talk) 11:26, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Changing other users pages
[edit]Why did you make this pointless edit [2] to User:Tigraan’s talk page? Theroadislong (talk) 17:07, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
@Theroadislong: I wanted to see how his user page was made, that is all. I barely wrote nor deleted anything on his userpage. That should answer your question. -Hamuyi (talk) 17:11, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Answering and asking questions at the Teahouse.
[edit]Hello Hayumi. Please do not answer questions at the Teahouse until you have a lot more edits to article space than the two edits to article space that you have now. To put it plainly, we do not need users with basically no experience editing in article space answering questions at the Teahouse.
Second, and I know this has been mentioned multiple times to you, I need to mention again that this is not a social network. We are not here for you just to edit your user page and take up time asking multiple questions on the Teahouse. If you were making some productive contribution to article space that might be OK. But you basically are not contributing anything. Unless you begin contributing to article space or doing something productive, you should not expect to be around here very long.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 20:28, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

- Hamuyi, I have seen this pattern of editing before. You will likely be blocked soon if you continue to waste the time of productive editors with chitchat and continual questions without making a contribution to the actual encyclopedia. See WP:NOTHERE. If you do not know how to edit the article space of Wikipedia productively, then please log out and come back in three or four years. As numerous editors have offered to help you and you have not improved, coming back in a few years might be the best idea.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 20:47, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

. Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 21:04, 16 June 2020 (UTC)- If you will be appealing the block, I strongly suggest gaining some experience on another Wikimedia project prior to doing so. It will be easier to successfully appeal the block if you are able to demonstrate that you can edit productively and competently (as opposed to just copiously) on another project.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 21:08, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Request reason:
I know I have done "disruptive editing to articles (maybe userpages), I am sorry and I will never do it again. Please unblock me I am trying to Improve articles, I try my best. Hamuyi (talk) 21:20, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Decline reason:
The concern is that you lack the competence to edit Wikipedia. We understand you are trying, but you aren't succeeding. Frankly, the fact that you made two simultaneous unblock requests is further evidence that the block is appropriate. Ponyo suggested building up your experience on another project, then coming back here. That's not your only path forward, but it is a good one. You are free to make another unblock request (but only one open request at a time), but you'll need to specifically address what's changed in your level of competence since you were blocked. Yamla (talk) 21:44, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
Note that there's no shame finding Wikipedia difficult, or lacking sufficient competence. It is difficult. It is legitimately difficult. I find it difficult and I'm a native English speaker (I see you aren't, though you indicate you have a professional level of English). --Yamla (talk) 21:45, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
I am a native english speaker (you don't think I am but I am, its just how I write words). I don't know how to make projects. I tried to ask on the Teahouse but hosts said, I needed experince on making articles. I thought that was false I was planning to do a project page on what wikipedia is. But I never knew how to make project-page. Hamuyi (talk) 21:58, 16 June 2020 (UTC) 6
And how am I supposed to,
"bulid
up?" -Hamuyi (talk) 22:19, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- (Non-administrator comment) We already have a page about "What Wikipedia is", Wikipedia:About. Also, what Ponyo means is that you should prove to us that you are able to competently contribute to articles on another Wikimedia project such as the Simple English Wikipedia; your account is blocked only here and not on other wikis. Passengerpigeon (talk) 22:26, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok, Hamuyi (talk) 22:34, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
@Ponyo: why is there no expire time in my block? --Hamuyi (talk) 22:48, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- Because there is no time limit on you gaining competence; it will take as long as it takes. This page remains open to you to appeal the block per WP:GAB. Please don't misuse it by continually posting here as you did elsewhere. There is a limit to WP:AGF. -- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 22:55, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok. Good enough, Hamuyi (talk) 23:59, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- Also, when you implied that you didn't have much interest regarding working on articles, did you mean that you wanted to focus on "behind the scenes" tasks instead, such as removing vandalism? If so, I can offer you advice on how to do that. Passengerpigeon (talk) 00:06, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
@Passengerpigeon: Yes. I wanted to do that kind of work. I think I won't be able to do so bc editing powers are gone. Unless you do something about it. -Hamuyi (talk) 01:08, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- You can do it on the Simple English Wikipedia. Please notify me if you decide to try that out so that I can show you the ropes and review your contributions. Passengerpigeon (talk) 03:01, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
@Passengerpigeon:
Yes, anytime would be good ill be online for some time. Hamuyi (talk) 10:43, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- I have created a user subpage at simple:User:Hamuyi/Vandalism reversion that contains advice and exercises relating to removing vandalism. Please complete the questions there to demonstrate your knowledge of vandalism reversion, and I will mark the answers for you. Passengerpigeon (talk) 22:29, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Passengerpigeon: Please don't give people this advice - the Simple English Wikipedia is not a "redemption ground" for blocked users - see simple:WP:SIMPLENOT and simple:WP:ONESTRIKE. Naleksuh (talk) 22:29, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Naleksuh: I was following the recommendations of Yamla, who suggested gaining experience on another project; perhaps you might like to notify him if you think the suggestion is inappropriate. Also, I was only suggesting that Hamuyi edit the user subpage I created initially, rather than article-space. Passengerpigeon (talk) 22:34, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Passengerpigeon: I think Naleksuh is quite right. This was a really bad move that someone might raise as a negative at your WP:ORFA. We block users for causing disruption, or being incompetent. Encouraging them to go elsewhere to cause the same problems is not the right approach. I think you will need to keep a close watch on their edits should they follow that suggestion. Nick Moyes (talk) 23:41, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Nick Moyes: I understand that I messed up here, although my main reason for deciding to go ahead with it was that Hamuyi was blocked mainly for WP:NOTSOCIALNETWORK concerns and, as far as I can tell, didn't do any vandalism reversion or for that matter much article editing at all on the English Wikipedia. If he had tried his hand at anti-vandalism work here and proved himself une to identify vandalism, I wouldn't have offered him that opportunity. I definitely will be keeping a close watch on their edits as was my original intention with this, and I implore Hamuyi not to edit there outside of userspace until further notice. Passengerpigeon (talk) 23:44, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Passengerpigeon: Thanks. We all make mistakes, though I must say I was quite impressed by the overall review of your work at ORFA. Although I've not had the chance to look into your work directly, I sense that you have the makings of a good admin, and have done some good work. Just give it time. As they say 'there is no rush'. Cheers Nick Moyes (talk) 00:05, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Back to Hamuyi: This editor started by asking for help at Teahouse, which appealed to the hosts who labor there for exactly that purpose. But Hamuyi never applied that advice to editing articles, and in fact demonstrated a remarkable aversion to editing articles at all. In time, 'I need help' interspersed with 'I'm offended because I was cautioned' became an annoying dripping faucet that had no evidence of getting better. Whether this was a person who was temperamentally unable to commit to editing or else a troll who found pleasure in pretending to be a helpless newbie, the time waste for editors of good faith was clearly never going to end. David notMD (talk) 09:36, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

- Ignore the earlier message I sent, as you seem to be working on the vandalism quiz. Just do not edit outside of userspace on Simple-Wiki. Passengerpigeon (talk) 23:57, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok. (Ya-bo¡|¬-¬--)Hamuyi (talk) 00:00, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, Hamuyi. I have marked the questions you have answered on your quiz page, and you only got one question partially right. In addition, when you saw the question that asked you to identify an edit that was done as a test, rather than looking for a test edit that another user had made to an article as you were supposed to, you made a test edit yourself to the page Homework and then reverted that, despite my condition that you edit only inside your own userspace until instructed to do otherwise - this takes precedent over the questions on the page. Unfortunately, it seems like you simply do not have the required maturity yet to edit Wikipedia constructively, and I encourage you to stop all editing now and come back to request an unblock after a year or more has passed, and without creating sockpuppet accounts or editing logged-out. @Yamla: @Ponyo: If you do so, and can prove that you understand that the edits you have made here the first time around were not constructive and were wasting the time of other editors, I am sure the administrators will consider unblocking you - I have copied them in on this message. If you continue to disrupt other projects in the same way that you did on the English Wikipedia, such as with the test page you recently created on Wikibooks, you may wind up with a global lock on your account which will make it much harder to get unblocked. Thank you, Passengerpigeon (talk) 00:36, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
- And you are now attempting to write encyclopedic articles and dictionary definitions on Wikibooks, which is outside of the project scope. Please stop, or you will be globally locked. Passengerpigeon (talk) 01:07, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
What the heck am I supposed to do?! Hamuyi (talk) 01:15, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
- Frankly, I think it's time to stop editing on any wikimedia project. Your unblock request, above, is months if not years too soon, and all you have demonstrated is that you must be left blocked to protect the project. I'm sorry to say this, but I don't think Wikipedia or any of the related projects are for you at this time. --Yamla (talk) 01:18, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
Please no ! Wiki related projects are my only choice! Please nooooooonoooooo. ල---Hamuyi (talk) 01:31, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
- When you say "your only choice", is somebody mandating that you edit Wikipedia, e.g. a parent? What we were saying is that you aren't ready to edit here now - cease all contributions to other Wiki projects now, and we will have no need to globally lock your account. In a year or more's time, you may request an unblock. Passengerpigeon (talk) 02:15, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

Request reason:
I will start making helpful and useful changes to the encyclopedia such as adding useful information to articles and not adding information that doesn't make sense or makes personal attacks on other people. In addition, I will provide reliable sources on all the information I add and all the articles I create. I feel that getting unblocked is important because I didn't get many chances to edit this wiki properly.
Decline reason:
It's been two months since multiple editors suggested that you wait a year or so before coming back. Typically our standard offer is at least 6 months, so you're still even short of that. Take time and come back down the road. only (talk) 23:38, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
