Ahmad ibn Abi Jum'ah
Hey HaEr48, I removed "Some opinions also say that he was a native of Spain, born in Almagro" from the Biography section because it's just one of the hypotheses that Stewart discussed in his paper. But the native of spain hypothesis wasn't mentioned in his conclusion The Life and Career of Ahmad b. Abi Jum‘ah. Don't you think mentioning it in the Biography section gives it weight? Sorry for any inconvenience. Regards -TheseusHeLl (talk) 13:34, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- @TheseusHeLl: p.272 of Stewart mentions a list of scholars that accepted the Almagro of Spain hypothesis, even though you're right that Stewart (as well as Harvey) seem to reject it. I still think the weight of those scholars listed by Stewart is important enough that we should not omit it from the Biography section. HaEr48 (talk) 14:00, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- Recent sources:
- (Cheddad 2009), trans, "Some researchers had thought that he could be a faqih from Almagro, a locality in La Mancha, in New Castile, but without being able to identify it. This possibility resulted from an explicit sentence added to one of the Aljamiado manuscripts of the text, whereas the Arabic original did allow admitting the reading "originating in Almagro", in addition to that - perhaps more obvious - of "member of the Maghrawa", a Berber tribal confederation of the Maghreb. A recent work, published in 2006 by Devin Stewart, however, allows us to shed new light on this character and to lean definitively on the latter of these two hypotheses."
- A more recent one (García-Arenal and Mediano, 2013) "Dobelio considered the author of the fatwa an apostate and believed him to be a Morisco; because the adjective of origin in his name was al-Maghrawi, and because the text had belonged to Moriscos, Debelio thought that he came from Almagro, an error that arose from his ignorance of the Maghreb and Western Islam. Maghrawa was, in fact, a Berber tribe from the area between Oran and Marrakech, to which the Mufti undoubtedly belonged even though he lived as a scholar in Fez." -TheseusHeLl (talk) 14:50, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- And Molénat in his review of Catlos' work Muslims of Medieval Latin Christendom said in a note, ".....The name of its author, al-Maġrāwī, should not be understood as "the man of Almagro", i.e. an Andalusian refugee in the Maghreb, but as a local-tribal nisba of the central Maghreb, as Stewart has shown at length (“The identity of the‘ muftī of Oran ’, Abū l-‘Abbās Aḥmad b. Abī Jum‘ah al-Maghrāwī al-Wahrānī, d. 917/1511”)...." He's not anymore part of the list of scholars that accepted the Almagro of Spain hypothesis. -TheseusHeLl (talk) 15:38, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- @TheseusHeLl: I hear you, and personally I agree that the Magrawah interpretation is more convincing and consistent with the rest of the biography. And I believe the way it is phrased in the article already reflects the diversity. I just don't think given WP:NPOV policy that we should omit an opinion still held by non-fringe scholarship, in this regards. Feel free to start a wider discussion if you disagree with me. HaEr48 (talk) 18:05, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- Right you are. My point is that the second hypo should be given more weight because it's more reflective of recent works.
- Just a quick note. After reading Razuq, al-Andalusiyun wa-hijratuhum p:148. The work is a thesis (originally published in 1987) and edited for the third time in 1998. He's basing his claim in Cantineau's paper Lettre du Moufti d’Oran aux Musulmans d’Andalousie (1927) -TheseusHeLl (talk) 18:45, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- @TheseusHeLl: Isn't it already given its appropriate weight? Before the sentence you deleted, there is already "He may have been born in Oran, then part of the Zayyanid kingdom of Tlemcen,[13] or in the nearby region of Maghrawah.[14] In either way, he was presumably of Berber origin and belonged to the Maghrawah tribal confederation." which is both more detailed and mentioned earlier than the "Some opinions also say that he was a native of Spain, born in Almagro" explanation. HaEr48 (talk) 21:27, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, fair enough. Sorry for taking your time and bombarding your notifications. Kind Regards -TheseusHeLl (talk) 22:02, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Nasrid Dynasty image update
Hello HaEr48,
I see you're still updating your history of Granada via its rulers; nice work. I made File:NasridDynasty.png ages ago, but looking at it now, it looks like Yusuf I was inexplicably demoted to non-ruler. While I'm updating the picture anyway, any changes you'd request or other inaccuracies, since you seem the resident expert here? I suppose "al-Zagal" is a bit of a hybrid between the titles you list of el Zagal and al-Zaghal so I should probably update it to pick one, but anything else? SnowFire (talk) 18:11, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
- @SnowFire: Thanks for the message. I've only looked closely at the history of the dynasty up to Muhammad IV. Up until that point, the names and relationship in your tree seem correct. If I may suggest, consider adding Fatima (daughter of Muhammad II) as mother of Ismail I, because it is an important link that gives legitimacy to Ismail I's accession (he was a direct descendant of Muhammad I and II through his mother, and only distantly related from his father side). See Fatima bint al-Ahmar#Family tree. For Muhammad I, he only entered the city of Alhambra in 1238, although 1232 is also a valid start date because that's when he declared independence in Arjona. Up to you. As for the later sultans, as I said I'm not very familiar with them, but I'm just curious why epithets or westernized names are only given for the late Sultans, even though many other sultans also have it. Suggest making them all use only the personal name to be consistent. HaEr48 (talk) 19:43, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
- For why the last rulers have the epithets: just honoring a quirk in the source document, which granted, is a book written in 1838 (!) and thus not guaranteed to be equivalent to what names modern historians would use to refer to those rulers. Basically Prescott always talks about Boabdil, el-Zagal, etc. and I was including the more formal name myself (but Prescott does refer to the earlier rulers as Sa'd, etc.). I can look into adding Fatima, sure. SnowFire (talk) 20:36, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
