Your close at ANI

Usually I agree with you, but I must respectfully protest your closure of the MickMacNee ANI discussion. Your wording implies closure, but in light of this post by Mick at ITN just now what you have done is given a green light for this type of uncivil posting to continue. Indeed, in this post Mick seems determined to exploit the current situation, and continue at will. Again and as you well know, ITN needs to draw in more editors; by condoning Mick's surly non-apology at ANI with a sudden closure, when more users were weighing in, the closure does Wikipedia in general and ITN in particular a disservice, in my own estimation. I have watchlisted your page and will watch for a reply here, thanks. Jusdafax 17:47, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

<sigh>. I don't think any good can come from leaving the thread open, but if you want to re-open it, you needn't consider my close an admin action, so revert it if you want. That said, there's no realistic prospect of any admin action being taken—a block would be purely punitive. May I suggest (and it's just a suggestion) that you disengage from the whole thing. I'll leave Mick a note. I'm not going to go threatening to block him, but I'll try to talk to him. I have to say that diff isn't really something I'd consider a WP:CIVIL violation (much less a WP:NPA issues). HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:28, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Sorry to jump in but I feel like saying something. That diff really isn't a personal attack though it isn't very civil either. I think he's just frustrated as we were slightly rude at WP:ITN/C. I'd try talking to him, definitely don't block. Mr. R00t Talk 18:32, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
I will take both of your advice and back away. Having made my case at ANI and here, I'll stand by. Best wishes, Jusdafax 19:47, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Looks good. There's still the dab links and the lead to work on, though. I'll work my way through the rest of it at a more sociable hour. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:50, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi (again!)

(talk page stalker) Hi HJ, typing in Whisky Drinker to Google Images I found this can you confirm this also I didn't know you aged considerably :P (of course I'm joking) I've got nothing better to do lol. Ғяіᴅaз'§Đоом | Spare your time? 02:21, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)I do have this backlog I've been hacking at lately that could use another hand. Airplaneman 02:24, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Ha! Well that's a good whisky he's got there. Also, how do you know how old I am...? I could be that old (or young, depending on your perspective). ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:27, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
:P LOL hehe, so wait you could be an old man for all we know (joking!) Ғяіᴅaз'§Đоом | Spare your time? 02:34, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
To Airplaneman: I can help out with the backlog if it doesn't require adminship. I'd be thoroughly creeped out if HJ Mitchell was 80 years old. Mr. R00t Talk 18:00, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Not that I know what an oldid is... Mr. R00t Talk 18:03, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) {{oldid}}: e.g. {{oldid|1=User talk:HJ Mitchell|2=380354633|3=Your post above, oldid-ified!}} renders as: Your post above, oldid-ified! Good articles need an oldid added to the talkpage so that readers can see which version of the article was reviewed as a good article. Hope that helps! TFOWR 18:28, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Bloody hell, last time I looked at that category (a few months ago) there were only 3 articles in it, now there are 155! Still, with a few editors hacking away at it, it shouldn't take too long to clear. I'll try to offer some assistance when I've wrapped up the other things I'm working on a the minute. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:40, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)So here's what you do, Mr. R00t:
  1. Click "edit" on the article's talk page, and find the timestamp in the GA template to see when it was passed.
  2. Check the article's history and click on the old revision of the article that is closest to (but not past) the timestamp on the talk page template.
  3. At the end of the URL of the old page version, you'll see "&oldid=(numbers go here)". Copy those numbers to an "|oldid=(numbers go here)" parameter in the GA template (add that param if it's missing).
  4. Save, and you should see "Review: (date of review). Reviewed version). See this as an example (after I added it). Old version (before I added it). Diff.
Have fun, Airplaneman 18:43, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, but it get a bit more fiddly when the talk page uses {{ArticleHistory}}. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:47, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
True... from what I've seen, most of the articles in that cat don't have it, thankfully. Airplaneman 18:48, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Having fun guys? Just had science... boring as. Ғяіᴅaз'§Đоом | Spare your time? 00:37, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Meh. You get used to the socks. I had one while I was away! Shame really, I would have loved to have hard blocked him! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:04, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
LOL, socks gotta love them especially the HJ MICHELLE one lol. Science is fun but my teacher rants and rants.... I got a bad report from him for not listening when my book is full of all the work we did. Ғяіᴅaз'§Đоом | Spare your time? 02:33, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I was wondering if you could help me out by copyediting this article. I assume you've never seen any of these episodes, or at least a majority of them, and I believe it would be more beneficial to have someone who has never seen them cleanup some of the unneccessary details in the episode list. I'd really appreciate it if you would be willing to look over the article, as I hope to bring it to FLC in the near future. Thanks. Gage (talk) 14:15, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Interesting. I'd be happy to take a look. I have seen a few of the episodes, but not all of them. Do you know of a similar FL? In my experience, it helps to have a "finished item" so that you have something to work to. I haven't looked at the prose, but my immediate thoughts on skimming through the article are that the plot summaries may be too long. Anyway, I'll gladly take a look, but it may be a day or 2 before I can get round to doing anything substantial. Hope that works for you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:43, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I was actually attempting to model it after the Family Guy (season 5) article, which was promoted as a featured list not too long ago. The plots don't really need a substantial amount of trimming, but maybe get a few of them around the length of some of the shorter ones on the fifth season article, if possible. And do take your time, but if you can start this as soon as you get the time, the better, as I'd like to get the ball rolling towards FLC within the next few weeks. Gage (talk) 15:49, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Certainly, I'll take a more detailed look later today and maybe start fiddling with it over the next day or 2. It's good you have a model to work to—it's much easier to follow a precedent than to set one. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:54, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Alright, and I'll try to monitor the article a little bit, in case you end up cutting something significant. But like I said, don't go too crazy on trying to shorten the plot lengths to just a few sentences; just use the fifth season as a guide and you should be fine, as the plots should be somewhat descriptive. Gage (talk) 16:19, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

I do warn!

I'm not questioning your decision, but I do warn every vandal that I see. Just letting you know. I'm going to get about 100 vandalism reverts and then re apply. Is this ok? Látches Lets talk! 16:27, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Come and ask me directly when you've got 100 then. It'll probably be quicker than going back to PERM/R. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:34, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I don't know how to count the contributions, can you tell me how many I have now? Látches Lets talk! 16:53, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
About 5 since your rollback request. How are you finding Twinkle? It's a little slow but it's a bit faster than the undo button. It also has all the custom warning templates, which can be handy—it lets you give the most relevant template for each each case. Keep at it for an hour or so, then give me a poke and I'll have a look. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:11, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Go over to Commons and take a look at the top of your screen. They have a sitenotice over there on this issue. Courcelles 01:04, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Oh joy! So why are existing images displaying? We should probably consider a sitenotice of our own if this isn't going to be fixed in the immediate future. Any idea what's causing it? Whisky drinker | HJ's sock (Mistake? let me know) 01:45, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

That seems to be related, but not about this particular issue. I added myself to the CC list anyway. Has our issue of new images not displaying actually been bugzilla'd? Whisky drinker | HJ's sock (Mistake? let me know) 02:18, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Help

Hey HJ. Just want to get started with WP:ITN, but I don't know how. I've got a very great story from Chile, 33 miners that were trapped after a mine collapse in Copiapó, were finally found by authorities, and they sent a letter that said that all of them were alive after 17 days. Help me! :) Diego Grez what's up? 00:18, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Hey, just go to WP:ITN/C and edit the section for today's date (in UTC) then add a level 4 header with a descriptive title and insert a few details about the story with your WN link and a few to external sources, sign it, and wait to see what people think. you;ll need an article that's been written or updated to reflect the event if it's to go up. Be aware that not everything that's nominated goes up. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:23, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
OK, done. Now creating an article for the accident. Diego Grez what's up? 00:36, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Opposable thumbs

Re. the 'ongoing' thumbnail generation problem; I've been speaking to Domas and Tim Starling, as they've worked on it; I've only understood about 10% of what they've said, but... well, the specific case of User talk:Sandman888#Commons is working, anyway, so wanted to let you know about that. Semi-auto clerking.

Just curious, what's the deal with the semi-auto? I thought we had a bot that archived? Apologies if this is a really stupid question, I haven't been around in a couple of years so I'm a bit lost in certain senses (like the pending pages protection... threw me off). Cheers, · Andonic Contact 19:38, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)I'm assuming you mean what's going on at WP:RPP. To clerk, use this script. It is done because the page becomes quite large even before User:VoABot can get to it, so users just clear it out for the bot. Airplaneman 19:43, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Request to restore rollbacking rights

HJ Mitchell, Xeno asked me in my user talk page to ask you if you can restore my rollbacking rights, as the block is unjustified and lifted. Xeno told me that it is unreasonable to have my rollbacking rights removed, given that I wanted to prevent WP:3RR. Thank you. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 20:30, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

To be clear, I said that the revocation of the userright had arguable justification, but if you were to indicate you realize why you should not have used rollback in this case, that rights could probably be restored. –xenotalk 20:35, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Nothing personal, but the edits you reverted with rollback were clearly not vandalism, so I'll make you the same offer I make everyone whose rollback rights I revoke: give it 2 weeks, keep your head down, don't get into any edit wars, then come back and ask me again and I'll reconsider with an open mind. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:39, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Just a heads-up, I think you set the protection on Toronto Sun wrong. Looks like you semi-protected it indefinitely and temporarily move-protected it (I assume you intended to do the opposite) ~DC Let's Vent 20:44, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
I assume you mean the Star? ;) I've fixed it, thanks for pointing it out. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:46, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
FWIW, I still think full protection would've been the best course of action. Semi-protection marginalizes the non-autoconfirmed side of the edit war (not all of whom were blocked). –xenotalk 20:47, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
I would have blocked the IP, but he seems to switch IP every few hours, so it would be next to useless. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:49, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
No blocks were needed. Full protection was what was asked for, it was what should have occurred (semi-protection may be seen as an endorsement of the registered side of the edit war). –xenotalk 20:52, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Why should we prevent anyone from editing a page just because 2 editors can't resolve their differences by discussion? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:57, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
There were three editors, two of whom you prevented from editing the article (one via a block, one via sprotect). Temporary full-protection would've forced, and allowed, that discussion. Blocking the registered editor and semi-protecting the article just potentially delayed the edit war a few days while making discussion all-but impossible. The page doesn't attract that many edits in the first place. –xenotalk 20:59, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi HJ, do you use AWB? I still can't work my way around it, the manual is a bit confusing I've only managed to make 1 edit with it so far :S Ғяіᴅaз'§Đøøм | Spare your time? 23:21, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

You should know by now, I'm useless with technical stuff! Ask Courcelles. He uses it (I've never used it myself), so he should be able to help you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:28, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Okie dokie, lol yeah forgot about that. Ғяіᴅaз'§Đøøм | Spare your time? 02:00, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Heh. I screwed up big-time when I first used AWB, but not for technical reasons- I went around adding the wrong template to several dozen pages... The only real way to learn how to use it is just to start using it, maybe test it in your userspace first? What are you intending to do with it? sonia 02:04, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Article tagging, typo fixing, the sort of thing that would be easier with a progam such as AWB. I think I really should read up on PHP code, creating a bot for this would be a lot easier. Ғяіᴅaз'§Đøøм | Spare your time? 08:04, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Uh... no it wouldn't. I've used the standard AWB program to run a small-scale bot, and believe me it's a ton easier with a GUI like that than straight off the command line. Although pywikipedia is not bad, if you're keen on that. (Also, when I asked what you intended to do, I meant whether you had a specific task (replace xxx outdated template etc), not what AWB does.) sonia 08:09, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, even the most complicated AWB run I've ever made, over 1,000 pages took about five minutes to program and then a couple hours to click "save" while I watched golf. Writing a bot is not that simple. Courcelles 08:13, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Oh, O.o. Python seems to be the most common programming language to use for bots. I think we've annoyed HJ to the point he's tearing his hair off because of all this bot talk lol. Yeah bot writing isn't simple but they make things a bit easier but it would make your life hell trying to fix the mistakes and false positives they make. Autopatrolled

Hello, HJ Mitchell. I am requesting my account to have the user group Autopatrolled. I would not abuse it, and I have some good quality work. German submarine U-450, SM UB-50, 2010 Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500, and 2010 Coke Zero 400 have all appeared on the DYK section of the Main Page. 2010 Crown Royal Presents the Heath Calhoun 400 recently became a GA. All articles mentioned were created by me. ~NSD () 04:09, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker): HJ is a Brit, so it is 4am there now, you might get a quicker response going to WP:PERM/A. - NeutralhomerTalk04:15, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
(ec, 5am actually! British Summer Time!) Anyway, I don't see a problem. I'll AGF that you're just picking an online admin rather than admin shopping and you seem to have created a fair few more articles since your last request was declined. I trust you with it, so  Done. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 04:16, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I have 4am on my clock (a Firefox add-on), must fix that. Are you UTC or UTC +1? - NeutralhomerTalk04:20, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
+1 until October, then I'll be UTC. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 04:22, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict × 2) Thanks, and yes, I chose you since you are online. It's 10:20 PM where I live, so I'll be going to bed. ~NSD () 04:22, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
@HJ: So UTC is always UTC no matter what, no daylight savings time for them? - NeutralhomerTalk04:23, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
I've got to ask, why on Earth are each edition of these races notable enough for their own article? Outside the Daytona 500, there's nothing special about them, nothing really significant happened; the lot just appears to be cruft from a very minor, very local sport. NSD, you might wake up to an AFD notice... Courcelles 04:24, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
NASCAR isn't a local sport; it's national and in some cases international. People all over the world watch NASCAR. And the races obviously are notable if they pass DYK and GA. ~NSD () 04:30, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Seeing I've seen an FL deleted outright, and an FA converted into a simple redirect, that isn't a very good argument. People all over the world watch golf, too, and outside of the Majors, the WGC's, and the Players- 9 tournaments a year- none get individual articles. (And I'd lower that to just the Majors). None of the articles I've looked at have more than just basic, routine coverage from every week, and most are heavily based on NASCAR sources. Courcelles 04:34, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
(ec) Actually notability isn't relevant to DYK, GA or even FA. But I'd !vote keep for these. The issue seems to me to be WP:NOTNEWS and WP:EVENT but I think it's a stretch to apply tbhem to top level sporting events. But recently it has come up at AfD a lot. A couple of articles on English Premiership matches just got deleted and there's currently a PGA golf tournament on the last day of the log that'll probably get closed as no consensus. Ultimately I don't think sport event articles do any harm at all so I'm not inclined to think that NOTNEWS should be stretched to try to delete them.--Mkativerata (talk) 04:35, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
(talk page stalker): Courcelles, NASCAR is an international sport. Races are run in Toronto and Mexico City, there is talk of Donald Trump trying to get a track in the New York City Metro area. Several NASCAR cars have gone right through Times Square several times for events about this track proposals. NASCAR vehicles are transported all over the country just to be shown to local supermarkets for fun. In the US, there is two radio networks devoted to nothing but NASCAR, Motor Racing Network or MRN and Performance Racing Network or PRN. These network broadcasts are carried on radio stations across the 50 states and Canada, along with the Armed Forces Radio Network, which makes it international coverage. Races are broadcast on television via the American Broadcasting Company, better known as ABC and ESPN in the US, with Speed Channel carrying some live shows as well. There are channels on Sirius XM Radio devoted to NASCAR, which also broadcasts in Canada as well as the US. There are live pay-per-view channels where a viewer can watch live in-car cameras (the same ABC or ESPN shows during the race) and live in-car communications (the same ABC or ESPN listens in on during the race). NASCAR has expanded with their three major divisions, Sprint Cup, Nationwide Cup, and the Craftsman Truck races, to regional and local divisions for up-and-coming racers. There is talk about NASCAR taking things overseas for a race or two, but I don't know if that is going anywhere (think of transporting all those cars, equipment and crews). So, NASCAR is not a "local sport" by any means, it is clearly a national and international sport with millions of viewers and listeners during any given race. - NeutralhomerTalk04:54, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Courcelles does have a point about the race articles, though, which is what I think he was trying to get at. Maybe we should focus more on driver bios… Airplaneman 04:58, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

I need to add two divisions to my post above, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series in Canada and NASCAR Corona Series in Mexico. Also a correction, it isn't the "Craftsman Truck" series, it is the "Camping World Truck" series. My goof. To me, the Sprint Cup will always be the Winston Cup. - NeutralhomerTalk05:21, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Knowingly of this, if you think the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) races (mosty Sprint Cup Series) are not natable? Then how are any of these Formula One articles notable? They cover the same basic thing: Races. This is very relative to an arguments that NASCAR always are involved in: Is NASCAR a sport? I say it is all notable. If you want just a basic encyclopedia, just get the books! I thought that Wikipedia could give information that all other encyclopedias don't have, but simply I'm wrong because of the above. I have been involved issues similar to this. If you want to redirect all or most of them, I serve no purpose, I probably will become simi-active (which you all probably don't care). I came here to help with NASCAR artcles on Wikipedia, and I think I have done well. Please rethink about it. Nascar1996 Contributions / Guestbook 21:18, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

No problem. I understand, you have your duty to do. I do have several references/external links. However, I am at the library right now and could not copy and paste them. Please restore the article to one of my subpages so I can improve and perfect it. Thanks. Rms125a@hotmail.com (talk) 17:22, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

I would love to, but I'm afraid G10 is a general criterion and applies everywhere, including in userspace. However, if you can provide me with one plausibly reliable source to back up the statement in the article, I'll be happy to restore or userfy it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:28, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for userfying the Palij article. There are additional references and links I intend to add. Let me try to explain what happened as best I can discern. I received this aggressive, attacking-sounding message about a page created several years ago, which I later remembered that I had not created as an article, but only as a redirect. Another editor (User:TML) made an article out of it but neglected to add any sources, which I agree is wrong. At first I didn't realize all this but the article seemed pretty good and I guess I got a little proprietary and felt I should try to save it. I was going to AfD it, but that's not allowed under these circumstances as you also know. I kept asking for the article to be unblanked so that I could add the references which I was pretty sure I would be able to locate and I did -- easy Google search. But I was at the library at that time and you apparently can't copy and paste URLs on library computers. So I could not fix the article in time and it got speedy deleted.
However, before the article can be moved out of the mainspace the AfD I initiated -- before I was informed was not allowed as I was the article's creator -- must be closed out. Can you do it? Thanks. Rms125a@hotmail.com (talk) 21:12, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Little Cornard derailment

GA you say? Gonna be a long time coming I'm afraid. RAIB can take 18 months or more to issue a report. I'm surprised MMN hasn't nominated it for deletion yet though! Mjroots (talk) 18:58, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't think you'd necessarily have to wait for the report to get it to GA. I think it's unlikely to be AfD'd now, because it's clearly received ongoing coverage. I looked it up the other day after seeing something about it on the BBC News website and was pleasantly surprised to see a decent, well-developed article. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:36, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Any chance you could begin copyediting the article sometime today or tomorrow? I want to try to get it to FLC sooner rather than later, and the sooner you are able to take a thorough look over the better. Thanks again. Gage (talk) 19:23, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

I'll make it a priority. I'll probably get to start on it in a couple of hours. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:38, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

HTML Help

I'm not sure you can help with this but if you can't can you help me find someone who can? OK I want to add a HTML form to my userpage so when someone puts in their username it will take them to a page such as, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Joe_Gazz84/xxxxxxxxx (x is username entered). Also if I wanted to create another account to link to mine for AfC Discussions how would I identify the account is mine without it being called a sock puppet? Also a third thing, if I want to have the "You have new Messages" yellow box xome up for another page, how would I do that? Like if I wanted it to alert me when a different page was changed. Joe Gazz84 (user)(talk)(contribs) 22:24, 24 August 2010 (UTC) (Please leave a talkback.)

Okaaaay, first, do you mean something like Special:MyPage? Second, just make sure it's perfectly clear on the second account's userpage that the account belongs to you, like I do with User:Whisky drinker and don't !vote on anything with both accounts. Third, I'm 99% sure that can't be done and that ti only works on your talk page. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:45, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, and I know the voting thing, I mean is there a userbox I have to display? And on #3 I was just wondering. Thanks SO Much! But, as for #1 I meant an HTML box to fill in a text box and add the text in the text box to the end of a link. I want it to take a user to, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Joe_Gazz84/(Text Entered Here) .Joe Gazz84 (user)(talk)(contribs) 00:07, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Could you place the same box on my user talk page. I created the article. The next day, Diego redirected the article the his article that he created the day after my article. Do not yank the box from his user talk page as that user needs encouragement. However, I would appreciate the box in mine since I am in a contest (Wikicup) and do not want to be in last place in the semi-finals round. I have gotten this far already! Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 00:00, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Well those templates are for editors who have made substantial updates to an article featured on ITN and I don't see your name anywhere in the history. Perhaps if you want to increase your standing in the wikicup, you should improve an article to GA status or help to update an article on a current event. There's at least one at WP:ITN/C that is impeded from going on ITN solely by the lack of an update. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:45, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
No, I don't want to increase my standing on Wikicup because I didn't do enough this round. I did in the previous rounds. Just so you know, here's the link. Diego should have merged the history. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chilean_mine_disaster&action=history Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 01:56, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Only administrators can perform history merges, since they require the temporary deletion of a page. Diego redirected an article to a better-developed article on the same subject. Happens all the time, but you didn't contribute to the article's appearance on ITN, so it would be unethical, imo, of you to take credit for it in some competition. Anyway, I thought ITNs were only worth something pitifully small? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:04, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, pitifully small. In contrast, I have transformed an article more than 5x so that it got a DYK (which is much harder than a new article DYK), then I made that into a good article. I came to you just because Diego can be a bit irritating at times. Cheers. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 02:19, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
As can everybody, you and me included. I'm not sure how this is anything to do with Diego, though. He wrote a better article than you and, upon discovering the duplicate, redirected the smaller one to the better-developed one. It's happened to me plenty of times. I fixed the /Recognized page. That sometimes happens when we get alerts/updates/etc from Wikipedia on the watchlists and at the top of the page. This might, potentially, affect the flags as well. - NeutralhomerTalk00:30, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

I've played around a bit with the image, but I can't really come up with something good, so maybe I'll put in a request at WP:GL/PHOTO - someone else is bound to have better techniques than mine. User attacked me on Wikipedia

Hi HJ Mitchell, thanks for blocking 174.94.37.212. I just started using the anti-vandalism tool Huggle today and reverted their first edit here. The user then attacked me on my user page and talk page as you can see here and here, respectively. I was wondering if anything else could/should be done, perhaps a longer block. Also since I just started using Huggle today, I want to make sure everything I did was in line with accepted protocols. Thanks. –CWenger (talk) 02:04, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I would love to extend the block, but, because it's an IP address not a registered account, I have no way of telling if the same person will be at that IP in 31 hours. If they are, and they start again, they'll find themselves re-blocked pretty quickly. As for the userpage vandalism, you kinda get used to it (I could dig out more!) but I can semi-protect your userpage if it bothers you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:46, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Protecting my user page isn't necessary. I just want to make sure everything is handled according to protocol, and it looks like it was. Thanks again for your help. –CWenger (talk) 03:18, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Re: Admin dashboard

I recommend putting that, uncollapsed, on a seperate page. That is what I have seen other admins do, since it is so much information for a small collapse box. - NeutralhomerTalk02:40, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't even want it, I have a script that gives me a keyboard shortcut to the template. I just want the admin stats, but I can't figure out a way of getting it on its own. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:48, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
The RFA stats? Cause "AdminStats" comes up as a redlink. - NeutralhomerTalk02:57, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
If I understood correctly, you wanted something that looked like the white area here (scroll midway down, left side). Is that correct? If so, the bot will come around in about 24 hours and create the page and update it every 24 hours afterwards. - NeutralhomerTalk03:06, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, that's what I'm after. I want to know things about my logs without having to trawl through them. It's easy enough to count log entries, but, for example, blocks and unblocks are entered in the same log and, when one has over 1,000 entries in that log, it's quite difficult to separate them. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:17, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, OK, well, that will show up when the bot comes by in the red dropdown box. For the moment, it is blank. Please let me know if I can help in any other area. :) - NeutralhomerTalk03:57, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Actually, you can just put {{adminstats}} on your user page to get that. Courcelles 04:07, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, thanks for the correction. I added the username to with the adminstats template. My goof, will correct. - NeutralhomerTalk04:09, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
OK, corrected, still requires the bot to come around, so.... :) - NeutralhomerTalk04:10, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
