Huggle and IRC

You know how you have the Logs Thing at the bottom could you add a IRC Windows and have all the huggle users auto join an IRC Channel. It would be nice to have in the future. Users with IRC access do join an IRC channel -- #en.wikipedia@irc.wikimedia.org (or the equivalent on other projects). But the Wikimedia RC channels are read-only. Joining a non-read-only channel on, say, Freenode is infeasible as it would make Huggle users' IP addresses visible to anyone, which they may not want -- Gurch (talk) 08:57, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

I wrote them as examples of what our Help namespace should look like (rather than the current situation, huge pages full of documentation of MediaWiki features with "Do not edit this page" stuck at the top). Very minor suggestion for future improvement to Arbcom Election Results

When you order by "percent support", a candidate's name can determine sometimes their order in the list. This occurs when two candidates have the same "percent support"-- the order is then alphabetical.

Looking at the behavior, the "percent support" numbers are rounded (or truncated??) to the nearest integer. The script could be improved by:

1. If it's truncating, it should round.
2. Determine order by the actual calculated percentile support, rather than the rounded integer.
3. If two candidates should have the same same percentile support, list the one with the higher vote total as the "higher" percentage. Someone with 10 opposes and 100 supports gets ranked higher than someone with 1 oppose and 10 supports.
4. Lastly, for maximum analness, if someone has the exact same number of total votes, flip a coin to determine order. lol.

Incredibly low priority, and I'd be shocked if anyone ever implemented any of the suggestions beyond #2.

Looking at the numbers - it seems to be rounding. If you see the numbers for Cool Hand Luke, for example, as it is right now, it shows 106 support out of 156 votes. This comes out to about 67.95%, and the written percentage is 68. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 09:44, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

The bot outputs candidates in alphabetical order. Table sorting is done by javascript which is part of MediaWiki; if there's a bug with that, there's nothing I can do about it -- Gurch (talk) 10:06, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

No, MediaWiki's fine-- the bot just doesn't pass on enough info to Mediawiki for the javascript to know what we want it to do. See User:Alecmconroy/Voting Results for an example of the bug and a theoretical fix.

I wouldn't go rushing to fix it though. Another way to influence the sorting behavior is to use an hidden field. (use the {{sort}} template to hide it but make it the thing to sort on) In that field you can put the percentage to 10 decimal places if you want, and then it will sort numerically on that field. I used this trick to get the symbols column in User:Lar/ACE2008 to sort the way I wanted to... I think that's better than displaying a decimal as Alec did. (because then someone will complain that two 69.1%s sort wrong or whatever :) ). My abject apologies if you know this already, Gurch. ++Lar: t/c 20:23, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Huggle and Sandbox

Do you know if there is any way to prevent Huggle from having Sandbox changes pop up? No matter how hard I try, I end up seeing Sandbox edits that appear to be vandalism. Though I was joking in my original thread title, as the investigation proceeds it DOES appear that the entire island of Great Britain is being blocked. Apparently, there's speculation that all Wikimedia domains have been put on some sort of "child porn" watchlist in Britain, which has caused all access to Wikipedia to be filtered through a very small number of proxy IPs for all ISPs who serve Britain. Hi Gurch, looks like your bot was down again tonight on the ACE2008/Results task. It was good to know that last time, it was actually you suffering from the greater withdrawal symptoms, having no Internet at all. Question: can you wrap a preamble into the bot results? The preamble would say something like "alternative results page at xxx", where xxx is ST47's results; last updated; yyymmdd hh:mm so people could spot deaths; and possibly something about the percentage-rounding and name-sorting, though we don't want tl;dr's.

I meant what I said. In the vandalism study, IPs added vandalism 31 times, and removed it once. I know that 95%+ of IP edits are benign, but they're more likely to make vandalism rather than fix it. Thus, the comment I was responding to (insisting that preventing IP edits would cause obvious BLP violations to go uncorrected) seemed to be backwards.

Gurch, thank you for your help. I do think you may want to note that myself and the other user involved at the template:Equidae dispute have a long "history" that so far includes, among other things, a WQA, an AN/I, both initiated by the other party against me, and both resolved in my favor. I in no way intend this as a personal attack on the other party, but I think it critical that anyone intervening in a dispute between the two of us knows this history. I won't bother you with diffs unless asked, but feel free to touch bases with Admins User:Lar, User:Rlevse and User:Bwilkins for the whole history. I'm sad that I keep finding myself dragged into these fights over and over again, but I also do not know what to do when there are such massive changes made to articles over and over again, either. I appreciate your intervention and willingness to help. Please also note that I am quite busy with a real life job and may not always get onto Wiki daily, though I usually can get on every other day, and can always be reached via email if there is something that requires prompt action. The first, should be possible if you select only new pages and only the category namespace. The second isn't possible at the moment (and is not possible to reasonably implement for en.wikipedia, don't know de.wikipedia) -- 00:07, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

TobiasKlaus: Talk to m:User:Bryan. He has a bot that can (or could) monitor categories to see what is added. It runs here on CAT:AOTR. Here's the setup page, but it stopped working some time ago. Referring to this comment. With 2 and 3, I did not get an error message. I just got that goddamned "not responding" s**t on the top of the window. With 5a, I meant to say almost identical (there's usually a one word difference). With the page list, I'm referring to the one on the left.
