Grammar Question
Hi GrammarFascist, I have a quick question for you and would also like to ask a small favor of you as well. When I use the phrase "in turn", such as in the following sentence, do I need the commas surrounding "in turn"? IL-1α stimulates higher keratinocyte activity and reproduction, which, in turn, fuels comedone development.[48] As for the favor, would you lend me your expertise and proofread the acne vulgaris article and let me know what needs to be fixed? I would really appreciate it! TylerDurden8823 (talk) 04:32, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, TylerDurden8823, thanks for stopping by. To answer your question, the commas around "in turn" in that sentence are not necessary, but they're not incorrect either; you can keep them or not, as you choose, but if you remove one comma you must remove the other as well. I would recommend removing them, but I don't feel strongly that they ought to be removed, so if you like them then by all means keep them. Most sentences in which "in turn" is used in that way can either use commas to set the phrase off, or not, and be grammatically correct either way.
- Acne vulgaris looks pretty good already! (Congrats on the GA; presumably you're readying the article for FA review?) I took a quick skim through it and only spotted a few minor changes that need to be made. It would honestly be easier for me to just make the edits than explain each one so you could do it, though you would be welcome to ask for clarification of any such edits after the fact. If that's all right with you, I'll be able to start working on it sometime in North America's Saturday afternoon or evening. Let me know... —GrammarFascist contribstalk 05:58, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for replying so quickly. Yes, I'm working on getting it to FA status. If it's easier to make the changes yourself, that's perfectly fine. I don't have any article ownership issues and seeing what you change will help me improve my own grammar skills so that would be great. If the commas aren't really necessary, then I'll remove them since having that many commas can be a little less aesthetically pleasing. TylerDurden8823 (talk) 06:10, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
- After looking over the cleanup edits so far, I do have a question. Why the changes to the reference formatting? TylerDurden8823 (talk) 02:58, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, TylerDurden8823. As far as I was aware, putting multiple authors in one field is not how citation templates were intended to be used. After reviewing Template:Cite journal#Authors, I see that there is an
authors=
field which can be used for multiple authors, though I've never seen it used. (In fairness, I don't often edit the references for medical articles, so that field may very well be in widespread use.)authorn=
is technically an alias oflastn=
, but since only first initials or first and middle initials were given, I didn't think adding thefirstn=
fields was called for. I did think the initials should be properly punctuated (e.g. Salk, J., rather than Salk, J,), but I don't know if the no-full-stop citation style is simply an existing format I'm not familiar with. I also have no idea what FA review looks for in terms of such things — I've been through the GA process before, but not yet FA — so if this is something you know there's a preference regarding, by all means educate me. I'll wait until I hear back from you to continue editing. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 15:40, 22 November 2015 (UTC)- (talk page stalker) To add to what GrammarFascist says, you should preferably use the
|last1= |first1= |
to sort out the different names instead of just|author=
. This will enable the refs to be converted into Harvard refs which use the last name as a marker, especially if there are multiple authors. In this article, one of the sources have multiple authors used in a Harvard ref. If you want to take an article to FA, every detail should be correct. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 15:59, 22 November 2015 (UTC)- You don't need to wait, I was really just asking for clarification. I've used that reference formatting in other articles before without issue but I also haven't taken anything to FA yet. So, if Carter is correct and that's the preferred format for Harvard refs (no clue how that's useful but whatever), then have at it. I've always used the current format just because I always thought it was more aesthetically pleasing to list it that way rather than the clunkier last1= first1= ,etc. but if that's the generally accepted protocol for FA, then please have at it Grammar. De nada! You want a new script to help you sort out the refs? w.carter-Talk 17:50, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
- You mean there's a script that will do some of the work for me? GIMME. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 17:54, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
- Well, it will not do the work for you, but it will make it so much easier. It's called User:PleaseStand/References segregator and the code for it is:
importScript("User:PleaseStand/segregate-refs.js");
.
- When you click on the top edit tag (the one that opens the whole article) a new button at the bottom of the editing window will appear. Click on it and the window will temporarily become two windows: one for the article and one for the refs. This will make it sooo much easier to get an overview of the refs, and you can edit them without having to search for them in the dense text. When you click on preview, the window will reset but any changes you have made to the refs will remain. Click again on the button to separate them again and continue working. You will get the idea very soon once you have installed it. Happy editing! :) (I'll be AFK for a while now) w.carter-Talk 18:06, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Okay, TylerDurden8823, I've finished the second portion of the article, and I'm taking a break for lunch and to run an errand. Two things: One, I've left you some <!-- HTML comments --> hidden in the article's wikimarkup, which you can view in edit mode (search on the combination "<!" to find them all easily). Mostly they're suggestions for things I noticed that FA review may or may not care about. The other thing is that, given what my friend W.carter said above, it seems the citation formatting ought to be done as properly as possible. I've corrected the formatting in the first two segments of the article (the parts I've proofread) to use |last1=___|first1=_.|last2=___|first2=_.
format rather than |author=___ _, ___ _
format, but if you're up for it, you should feel free to correct the rest of the formatting yourself, and I can double-check it when you're done. The script W.carter recommended above is definitely useful for working on the references, if you do decide to take care of it yourself. I'll be back in an hour or so. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 19:56, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you, I'm going through the revisions now! TylerDurden8823 (talk) 19:59, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
- Well, that errand turned into a fiasco. Sorry for leaving you hanging, TylerDurden8823. And thanks for catching that I left that chapter title behind (it's so obvious in retrospect) and the other edits you made while I was off having a bad day. Time for some nice relaxing copy-editing! —GrammarFascist contribstalk 03:07, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- No problem, I've addressed the questions posed on the page and fixed things where appropriate. Can you clarify the rationale you used regarding the use of which vs. that? That seems to be a recurring theme so I want to see if there's a rule of which I'm unaware. TylerDurden8823 (talk) 04:55, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- I see you've been busy going at the article yourself! Nice work. The that vs. which thing is one of those evolving language situations, where something that was formerly considered incorrect is now acceptable and not even noticed by most readers — similar to who vs. whom (though hypercorrection, i.e. using whom where who is correct, is still unambiguously wrong). The old rule is explained here (along with an incorrect defense of using that rather than who to refer to people) if you're interested. The guideline I'm using is instead whether which that is meant could be confusing, since that actually has several entirely different usages, only one of which is similar to the usage of which. So where either could be used, I've been going with which, to leave that for when that is what's called for. Incidentally, I'm going to let you keep working on the article for as long as you're inclined to, so as to avoid edit conflicts. My intermittent insomnia seems to be putting in an appearance tonight, so I'll be available to take over when you've had enough. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 07:41, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- And I forgot to ping you. D'oh. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 07:42, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry to hear about the insomnia, GF. (Been there, done that, will probably return there.) I also forgot one other point to have the authors listed with "last + first". This is an international site and not all countries/languages have the names listed in the same order as we do in Europe or the US. For instance there are about 1 billion Chinese names that are written the other way around, so for clarity there should be no doubt of which is what. Editing here, you should learn to think like someone completely outside your own culture and make things as clear as possible. And TylerDurden8823, if you use the "Cite→Templates→Cite journal" in the editing window when you insert the citation in the first place, clicking on the little green "+" to the right of the author box will sort everything out for you automatically, with no need to write all the long explanations yourself. w.carter-Talk 09:48, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, Cart. Usually I don't mind the insomnia so much, but that morning I had an early appointment for once, so arriving bleary and drowsy was less than ideal. Thanks for the additional tips about handling of author names in citations, as well. (P.S. I couldn't resist doing a little tidying-up in Moa Martinson. It's okay if the corrections I made wind up rewritten. Do let me know when you think it's ready for a fresh set of eyes.) —GrammarFascist contribstalk 05:43, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

One Little Indian Records
GrammarFascist Hi, hope you're keeping well. Was wondering if you were still available and keen to help me out with some Wiki pages for One Little Indian artists? Thanks Trincres17 (talk) 11:06, 6 November 2015 (UTC)
- Trincres17, I am so sorry for dropping the ball on you. I got wrapped up with other things (as you can see just below, there was an Articles for Deletion discussion I participated in that got rather out of hand; that was the most recent thing) and One Little Indian slipped my mind entirely. Thank you for reminding me, and don't hesitate to do the same in future if you don't see any progress from me for several days when you were expecting some. If Wild Palms (band) is still the article you would most like me to work on first, I can start on it today. Are any other articles related to the label currently facing deletion? —GrammarFascist contribstalk 13:50, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
GrammarFascist Hi, similar apologies, I have also been completely wrapped up with in other areas of work and this completely slipped my mind also. Wild Palms would be a priority to begin with definitely, and the moving forward Fufanu is another priority of mine to get sorted if this would be something you would be willing to help me with also :) Thanks again Trincres17 (talk) 15:02, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. Dashes
Hello, thanks for your edits to Tom Jones (singer). However, Wikipedia doesn't use spaced em dashes. Graham87 14:49, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hello to you, Graham. Thanks for catching that I'd added an s into an article title in a citation; typically I leave those alone, but I clearly wasn't paying enough attention to the surrounding context in that case. As for spaced em dashes, I'm aware that the MOS calls for either unspaced em dashes or spaced en dashes, but having worked in publishing I can't bring myself to do either of those. So long as the spaced hyphens (which I hope we can agree are the most-incorrect option) are no longer there, though, I'm content. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 00:28, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Spanish?
Since you have no Babel boxes on your user page, I have no idea how good your Spanish is, but I have seen you around articles that are related to "Spanish/South American/Latin" things so I thought I'd ask. At first glance this AfD seemed pretty clear, but digging a bit deeper, it might just be notable enough. Can you take a look at it if you're able to make heads or tails of Argentinian sources? My Spanish simply isn't good enough. w.carter-Talk 15:51, 29 November 2015 (UTC)
- I can hold a basic conversation in Spanish, and I can follow written Spanish somewhat better because I can pause and double-check definitions and grammar (and because then my difficulty with parsing speech isn't an issue) but for Wikipedia purposes I 'cheat' by having one or another of my non-Wikipedian friends who is fully fluent in Spanish double-check my work for me. As it happens, one of these friends is from the Dominican Republic and has a low-vision condition, and is very interested in helping prevent the deletion of the article in question. The two of us will be working on it later today. Thanks for the heads-up! —GrammarFascist contribstalk 19:20, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

Try it again?
Would you please consider trying VisualEditor again? I think that spending ten minutes in it would make you more effective as a Teahouse host, and I'd really, really, really like to hear your views about it. You don't even have to enable it; just click here to play in my sandbox. Click, double-click, type, delete, add one of everything from the Insert menu – do whatever you want. (Feel free to save changes, especially if you do anything interesting.) If you've used a normal word processor in the last ten yars, then I think you'll be able to figure out most of it pretty easily. And do check out the auto-citation system; it'll be "coming soon" to a wikitext editor near you (probably next year). Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:41, 30 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, Whatamidoing (WMF), thanks for stopping by, and for extending the invitation to your sandbox. In fairness, I haven't looked at Visual Editor in a few years and it may well have been improved in ways that would overcome my objections to it. (I'd probably still work in wikimarkup for the majority of my own edits; I also prefer to code HTML by hand in a text editor over using a WYSIWYG editor.) You make a cogent point about familiarizing myself with VE making me better able to assist new editors at the Teahouse. I'll definitely give it a try when I have a chance. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 21:44, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
- Let me know what you think. I use both, depending upon what I'm doing. There are things that are fun or fast in VisualEditor (deleting a column from a table!), and there are things that are faster in the wikitext editor (for editors like us, although maybe not for brand-new editors). Anyway, try it out, and let me know what you think. I really do want to hear your POV, as an expert on problems that new editors encounter, regardless of what you do or don't use for your own editing. Diversity question
By now it's really too late to respond to this question, but: what I was thinking was more of an open-ended question rather than listing off specific demographic categories for people to classify themselves within. As written, it makes choosing to skip specific categories too conspicuous (especially the 'cis or trans' part) but doesn't highlight other potentially interesting forms of diversity. Happy New Year GrammerFascist! In need of assistance please.
Hi, My name is Nichole (Niknakc) and I’m the originator of the biography on Anthony Conway. I went back to school and have not been active on Wikipedia for some time. I recently returned in preparation of writing a second article and learned that my first article was nominated for a deletion discussion in which you commented. I’ve contacted the Closing Administrator, and clearly shown the article was not an autobiography as was incorrectly asserted by an editor as the main reason for the deletion nomination, and that I have no close connection to the subject, nor a fan in any way.
While there is no formal vetting of articles prior to publication, I did the closest thing to this by submitting the article for Administrators Review when I originated it over a year ago. The article was approved for publication by Administrators as meeting the requirements of Biography of Living Person and I received help from several experienced Administrators and Editors on the original article. At no time did they say the tone of the writing was “promotional in nature”, so I was surprised that the few Editors involved in the discussion perceived the tone to be promotional.
As a relatively new contributor to Wikipedia, I know there is a lot for me to learn on how to best write in the Wikipedia way, and throughout I’ve been very open to constructive advice. The Closing Administrator suggested that I contact an Editor from the deletion discussion for help in refining the article. Could you please take me under your wing and assist me in the refinement of the article?
The Closing Administrator reestablished the article as a draft at the condition the article was after the changes were made by the Editors involved in the discussion. Today, I’m going to begin editing the article further based on recommendations of the Closing Administrator. I would really appreciate your guidance as I continue to work on the article. Thank You.Niknakc (talk) 22:24, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

RfC on Campus Sexual Assault
Hey, I'm just dropping you a note because you previously participated in this RfC on the Campus Sexual assault Talk page. The dispute was never really resolved, in part because of a lack of participation. I've posted a new RfC that deals with the issue, and, if you have time comments would be appreciated! Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Broken Picture Telephone logo.jpg
Thank you for uploading File:Broken Picture Telephone logo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 00:21, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
File source problem with File:Broken Picture Telephone logo.jpg
Thank you for uploading File:Broken Picture Telephone logo.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 00:21, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
Ranking
Hi there!
just curious, does some ranking exist for certain editors over others? I added internal links in a Wikipedia page to another Wikipedia page, only to discover the next day that the links had been removed and the page reverted by a user without even a name, just an IP address: 66.130.12.185.
If you were to make such edits, would that user go in and remove your changes as well, or do you somehow outrank his edits?
It's an odd political minefield to navigate, so a list of who holds the trump cards will help me decide whether it's worth my time to make any edits to the rampant examples of atrocious English found on many of the pages, especially after I spend time adding harmless links only to have someone else arbitrarily decide they were "unnecessary" and remove them. As someone who has worked in web design for over twenty years, internal links lead site users to stay on a site and visit more pages, thus increasing the number of connections and usage of the site as a whole. This is the first time I can remember where added internal links were ever decided to be "unnecessary", especially when one considers that there are no pages on Wikipedia that anyone could with any sound reason label as "necessary" in the first place.
Please advise regarding political structure of editors. If it's too arbitrary, the number of your editors will dwindle at a record pace.
Regards,

Hi. I trust you are well :). May I prevail upon your good nature and extend an invitation for you to visit a poll and vote here. Of course please feel free to ignore my request if time is too short (and I'll just go away ). This vote is for a small issue—the insertion of two navboxes into Michael Laucke, a recent GA article. File copyright problem with File:Cheezburger Cat may has - drawing.jpg
Thank you for uploading File:Cheezburger Cat may has - drawing.jpg. However, it is currently missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. Take a look at my episode synopsis?
I have written the synopsis for the first two episodes of Heimat and Heimat 2 on my sandbox, and I will continue to write the furuther episodes. All of what I have written, including characters what may seem irrelvant to mention now, will be as they do become larger characters later on. I do plan to see how I can cut down also. I know it is quite a lot too, and when I finish it all I'll put onto the "List of Heimat episodes" page, not the main one. But, could you take a look and let me know what you think and if it is good? Is word count actually decent amount? I just do not want the plots to be vanilla, 95% of everything is relvant in Heimat. Hope its all good. Let me know. :) Just also want to add, Heimat was made as one big epic long movie, and split down for easier viewing into "episodes", which are still pretty cinematic in terms of story, plot, characters anyway than TV. Just thought I'd mention so hopefully avoids comparison to actual TV-shows Heimatchen (talk) 21:50, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
W Motors No. of employees
Hi.
I saw you undid my edit for the W Motors page. The edit was the number of employees, which W Motors lists as 51-200 on their LinkedIn page. Isn't this a reliable source, since the company is revealing how many people they employ?
Thanks.
1.122.169.213 (talk) 11:50, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hello, anon editing from 1.122.169.213. LinkedIn is not considered a reliable source for Wikipedia purposes, because it is user-edited and thus a primary source. Anyone can claim anything they like on their LinkedIn profile; there is no editorial oversight. Thank you for your good-faith edit, though. If you can find a secondary source, such as a newspaper or magazine article about W Motors that states their number of employees, you can add the information into the article (just be sure to preface the data with "As of [year]," with [year] being the date the newspaper or magazine article was published). I'm going to place some more tips on your talk page. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 13:18, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

Media on Ram Bahadur Bomjon's controversies - what now?
Hi GrammarFascist, as you know (or did it yourself) the discussion was closed with a verdict to merge. But I don't see any advise from anyone, who will do that merging. Could/should/may I do it myself? Whom to address now, when the discussion was shifted to the discussion page of the main article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Ram_Bahadur_Bomjon ? Reading that discussion page I am quite uneasy to discuss the matter with people discussion breatharianism and calling Nepal's mainstream English newspaper The Himalayan Times a "blog"... Can I just be bold, as Wikipedia advices, and do the merger myself? Thanks for answering.DarkAges 16:36, 26 August 2017 (UTC)KaliageDarkAges 16:36, 26 August 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kaliage (talk • contribs)
- Hello, Kaliage. It is my understanding that merges need to be performed by, or at least with the assistance of, a WP admin so that the edit histories of the two pages can be merged as well. Since I don't know the full answer, I suggest you ask at the Teahouse, where a number of admins regularly patrol. Also remember to sign your comments on talk pages — and questions at the Teahouse — with ~~~~ (four tildes). —GrammarFascist contribstalk 16:53, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answer. One thing I don't understand: I always use the tildes and sign, but I got so many remindings to sign... There must be some technical reason. Anyway, I will try to ask in the Teahouse. So you suggest me not to start the merging by myself yet?SigningDarkAges 15:31, 28 August 2017 (UTC)KaliageDarkAges 15:31, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
- If you've been signing with four tildes but there are no clickable links to your user page and talk page (at least one of those is required) then hopefully the solution is to go to Special:Preferences and toggle the box that says "Treat the above as wiki markup." More information on how to format your signature can be found here.
- I see you've been porting changes manually between the two articles to be merged. Remember that any text you copy exactly from one article to the other MUST be cited to the source article in the edit summary (aside from direct quotations, which must be cited to the appropriate referenced source). And you do still need to find an editor to merge the edit histories of the two articles; you can either ask at the Teahouse or go to the talk page of a particular administrator.
- Good luck, and as always feel free to ask questions of me here or at the Teahouse. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 14:44, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Knoel Scott redux
@GrammarFascist, as you asked I found new documents about Knoel Scott which can add to his entry. How can I upload them for others to use (I understand I can't add to it anymore)? Harlesdenbop (talk) 18:38, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hello again, Harlesdenbop. Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. You won't be able to upload the documents, as that would be a copyright violation. What we'll need to do is, for each source, you give me all the publication details (name of magazine, title of article, author name, page number, publication date) and then choose a brief quotation (no more than 2 sentences) from the print article substantiating some fact or facts you think should be in the Wikipedia article. We can do this for multiple facts in each source article. I will then paraphrase the source article and add the information and source citation to the Wikipedia article. It will probably be best to work on one source article at a time, at least to start. You should place the source information at Talk:Knoel Scott, under a new section heading (preferably titled "New source: [source article title]"); I am watching that page and should be notified when you create the new section. I look forward to seeing what you've found! —GrammarFascist contribstalk 12:04, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

That tab will create the new section for you; all you have to do is title it descriptively and then write your message underneath. I have fixed this for you for this conversation, so you can just reply at the bottom now; just remember to use 2 colons to indent your reply and to sign your message with 4 tildes. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 02:44, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
