Zennor Head
Hey Gilderien. Thought I'd reply here regarding Zennor Head as it is likely to get lost in our adoption areas. There's a couple of suggestions I'd make. Firstly, it'd be good if you can use the citation templates ({{cite}}), they will organise your references slightly better. You don't generally need so many references on one fact, unless it is likely to be contentious. The biggest problem though is that you don't quite meet the 1500 character minimum for DYK (you're at about 900) and you'll have to have a think about the "interesting fact"... which may well be the largest coastal feature beginning with a Z. WormTT · (talk) 11:19, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of DYK ...that Zennor Head, Cornwall, is the largest coastal feauture in the UK that begins with the letter "Z". --Gilderien Talk|Contribs 16:31, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me, you just need to write a bit more yet! WormTT · (talk) 08:11, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- I will probably write a lot more after I get back from Wales, in about 6 days time. When it is ready, could you delete the re-direct so that I can move it into mainspace. Thanks!--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 19:30, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- Indeed I can. Let me know when you're happy. WormTT · (talk) 11:07, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- All done - have a look at Zennor Head. Good luck getting into DYK! WormTT · (talk) 10:22, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

- Quote from page: ″Zennor Head is home to a variety of wildlife, including the re-introduced choughs (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) and Large Blue Butterflies (Phengaris arion). It is primarily covered with grass, as well as heather (Calluna vulgaris), bracken (Pteridium aquilinum), thyme (Thymus mongolicus) and gorse (Ulex europaeus)″.
- Congratulations on the DYK but sorry to be a party pooper. As someone who lives within six miles or so of Zennor, walks on Zennor Head, was also the Cornwall Butterfly Recorder for fifteen years or so and one of the authors of A Cornwall Butterfly Atlas (2003) I am 100% sure that Zennor Head is not a large blue butterfly site and never has been (at least in the last 150 years or so). As to the Chough being re–introduced, aren't the ones released by Paradise Park, Hayle all dead? As far as I know the only chough are the ones that reached here naturally or have been born here. Jowaninpensans (talk) 19:15, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the correction. My source, the Z to Z of Great Britain said that a few pairs of choughs had been reintroduced on the Cornish coast several years ago, and can occasionaly be seen on Zennor Head. I guess the current ones (if indeed, there are any) have probably been born on the Cornish coast and not directly re-introduced. As for the butterflies, I will remove that bit as it is obviously wrong, but it is interesting to note that my book (perhaps not terribly reliable on this point) specificly says (direct quote) - "consolation is at hand in the form of the dazzling array of butterflies on the Head, including the Large Blue (large, blue). They flit above the head" etc. etc. Thank you for your comments. :-) --Gilderien Talk|Contribs 20:21, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- The Chough made it to Cornwall on its own about ten years ago and has bred every year since. At the time Paradise Park of Hayle (a zoo) had a breeding project for the re-introduction of the chough. Unfortunately for them with the arrival of choughs under their own steam the RSPB and other organisations did not want to continue with the re-introduction scheme. Paradise Park decided to release their captive bred birds anyway and as far as I know they either dispersed elsewhere or were taken by peregrines. The Large Blue was re introduced to a site near Tintagel in the 1990's but died out. There are further plans to do another re-introduction somewhere on the north Cornwall coast. The only blue butterflies at Zennor are the common blue, holly blue, small copper and possibly the silver-studded blue. All the best. Jowaninpensans (talk) 21:03, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, I will change the chough part. Would you mind if I added that bit about the butterflies to the Zennor Head article (is it mentioned in A Cornwall Butterfly Atlas?) Thanks--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 21:07, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

- Zennor Head butterflies are not mentioned in the book I'm afraid. The butterfly list is from personal observation.Jowaninpensans (talk) 22:38, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Lesley Lokko, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Scottish (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I appreciate that you're trying to help, but...
I appreciate that you intend to be helpful by adding DEFAULTSORT
markup to articles, but if you're going to do it as badly as you have done on several articles recently, it would be more helpful not to.
I'd be happy to give you advice on how to do it better, but I'm having trouble figuring out what it is you're actually doing. — Paul A (talk) 03:56, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
While I'm on the subject: adding useful links to articles is helpful, but overlinking is not.
I don't mean to pile on you about this, but making work for other editors to clean up is not a very successful way of being helpful. — Paul A (talk) 04:00, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. I was wikifying articles as per the instructions at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Wikify, but I now realise I was missing the final ":" in the {{DEFAULTSORT:}} template. I will remember this in future. Thanks for your advice, I apologise for any inconvenience caused.--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 15:11, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- I think you may be misunderstanding the instructions. It's not correct to add
{{DEFAULTSORT}}
or{{DEFAULTSORT:}}
by itself; you have to include a sort key. For example, for Holly Springs Sun, the code to add would be{{DEFAULTSORT:Holly Springs Sun}}
. — Paul A (talk) 01:54, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

- Ah, I see now. Thank you very much, I obviously must have read that bit too fast when I was going over the Wikify instructions. --Gilderien Talk|Contribs 18:45, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

DYK for Zennor Head
On 25 February 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Zennor Head, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Zennor Head, Cornwall, is named after a woman who was reputedly washed up there after being thrown into the sea in a barrel by her husband? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Zennor Head.You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
