US Route 30 in Iowa review
Thanks again for the review. I noticed that you did not strike out the comment about overlinking. Are there still some sections that could be thinned out? I thought I took out most of the offending links. –Fredddie™ 03:35, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Hi, I've responded to your comments in the FAC for the Bombing of Singapore (1944–1945) article. Are you now prepared to support the article's promotion to FA level, or do you have further comments? Thanks, Nick-D (talk) 06:39, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Hi Giants. I have restarted the above FLC because the consensus was unclear. Can you revisit it to ensure that all of your comments have been addressed, and if possible, declare whether you support, oppose, or are neutral towards the list's promotion to FL status? Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 22:53, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors
Hi! I noticed your activity reviewing Featured Article Candidates, and wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.
If you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!
You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).
I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 01:01, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
DYK for Guppy Troup
On 23 January 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Guppy Troup, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that bowler Guppy Troup chose his nickname based on a youth team he captained? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

WikiCup 2011 January newsletter
We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!
A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! Semi-pro football discussions need feedback
Hello! You have participated in WP:AFD disucssions involving semi-pro football teams in the past. The following two AFD discussions could use additional weigh-in as they appear to be stuck in "relisting" mode:
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Seaboard Football League
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Northeastern Football Alliance
I am placing this notice on talk pages of users who have shown interest in the past, regardless of how they !voted in the discussion. If you do participate, please mention that you were asked to participate in the discussion.--Paul McDonald (talk) 22:06, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you
I just wanted to thank you for all the work you've done on H of the NYJ (no, it is not yet passed). Are you hoping to get a Giants history article towards FA? I will be more than happy to review/copyedit it. I own no books on the Giants. FLC stuff
Hi Giants. I briefly mentioned to Dabomb87 that we could use some help at FLC and perhaps formalise your role, if you're interested, into fully-blown director? You may be interested in what's going on at Featured list proposal which could potentially result in some additional work on selecting lists for the main page in the future. So, we need more hands, and your hands best fit. Let me know what you think, no stress, no pressure, no commitment, just doing the odd thing here and there like you already do but with "directorship" rather than "delegateship".... DYK for Battle of Quebec (ice hockey)
On 19 February 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Battle of Quebec (ice hockey), which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the month after the Montreal Canadiens lost to their provincial rivals, the Quebec Nordiques, in the 1982 NHL playoffs, Quebec's beer consumption fell by 9.5 percent? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. FL director
Hi Giants, per our previous chats, the community has shown a clear consensus to "elevate" you to the lofty position of FL director! Welcome to the role, I hope you'll be able to participate in our ongoing efforts to see lists on the main page soon! Well done, all the best, The Rambling Man (talk) 15:37, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- Of course, no problem. We need to be reasonably swift to catch the tails of the featured sound brigade who look imminently as if they'll get their way and get a sound on the main page twice a week. Our more modest proposal ("Featured List Wednesday") ought not to prove too much of a hurdle to the community. Well, fingers crossed. One thing worth your while would be to hit User:The Rambling Man/Main page FL candidates to see the initial nine (so far) lists that we're using as a "look at what we can do" snapshot (rather than pure sports, discogs, awards etc) and check the blurbs are okay, and also see the sort of things WFCforLife is coming up with question-wise on the talk page, in anticipation of a grilling at Talk:Main page. In any case, thanks for your ongoing support of the process and welcome to the wonky triumvirate of FL directors! The Rambling Man (talk) 16:43, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
I don't know if I can, but I just want to congratulate you! All the best Giants2008! – Novice7 (talk) 16:56, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- A belated thank you to both you and Dabomb (and all other well-wishers). Hopefully I'll prove useful to the FLC process as a director, and justify the faith that others have shown in me. Giants2008 (27 and counting) 21:45, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Congrats! --Another Believer (Talk) 23:44, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

The Featured Sound Main Page Proposal Voter Barnstar | ||
I was truly humbled by the overwhelming community support for the recent proposal to place featured sounds on the main page. The proposal closed on Tuesday with 57 people in support and only 2 in opposition.
It should take a few weeks for everything to get coded and tested, and once that is done the community will be presented with a mock up to assess on aesthetic appeal. Finally, I invite all of you to participate in the featured sounds process itself. Whether you're a performer, an uploader, or just come across a sound file you find top quality, and that meets the featured sound criteria, you can nominate it at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates. Featured sounds is also looking for people to help assess candidates (also at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates.) Thanks again for such a strong showing of support, and I hope to see you at featured sounds in the future. |
FL proposal
Hey Giants, the FL-on-the-mainpage thingy has matured sufficiently for me to risk starting the whole thing off! If possible, could you just keep an eye out for any kind of director-style questions that may arise when I'm asleep/unavailable. All the best. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:12, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Patriots seasons
Hey, Giants, as you participated in the 2009 FLRC for List of New England Patriots seasons, and saved the Colts list a few months back at FLRC, would you mind casting your eye over this list for me, as I'm considering a new nomination for it. Thanks. Courcelles 19:26, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks! If you would have asked me, I'd never have guessed a 2007 promotion/2009 delisting could need as much work as this one did to get back to being credible at FLC; most of my work has been in tracking down references and table code/ACCESS stuff. As not having ever done an NFL article ebfore, thanks for the feedback, it was most appreciated. Courcelles 21:14, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
WikiCup 2011 February newsletter
So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round. Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.
Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.
Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. Good luck! State reptiles
1. The website is run by CBSSports. They have some sort of business relationship to act as a storefront or the like, but I think this is more honest, to show them as the publisher (it's not UMD.edu, but a .com domain and when you follow the about us, find that this CBSSports entity (owned by CBS) is running the service.
2. Here is the guidance on bulleted lists. This is also, not just me finding some obscure MOS, but how I would write off-wiki. That said, if it reeeeely bugs you, I give permission for you to change it to drop the bolds. I do think bulleting helps as the quotes are choppy anyhow, so would keep that. Think it deals with your issue of finding it hard to read a bunch of quotes in a row and sort of formalizes them. Wikipedia:Manual of Style (embedded lists).
3. How about an up or down thumb? We've been here since the 23rd. This is the content I can bring to users. TCO (talk) 02:01, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

But...
Hey Giants, I've noticed a couple of comments from you recently at FACs about beginning sentences with "But". I'm not sure when/where you went to school, but this phrase construction has gained general acceptance, particularly in recent years, and is now supported by many style guides. See for example the American Heritage guide, FWIW. Cheers, Nikkimaria (talk) 04:39, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Trying this... What do you reckon? The Rambling Man (talk) 21:05, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
- I tend to agree, if I had my way we'd be much stricter with the timings, but there seems to be a "silent consensus" to allow nominations to continue almost ad infinitum. I had hoped this would focus the attention of the community. Can we try it for a few weeks and see how it goes? I'm happy to resort to our old system, but thought this was worth a try...? Question for you
I notice that you're a regular reviewer/contributor over at FLC. I have little experience with featured lists. List of Seattle Sounders FC seasons is a list I've been working on a bit at a time for a while now. I believe the lead is now high quality (though surely it can be improved) and have been considering nominating it for FLC review. The length of the list is what I expect will be the biggest concern. Is there a rule or guidline on how long a list must be in order for it to be featured? In the case of this list, it will continue to grow by one each year with each new season. Do you have any advice on how to proceed with this list? In the end, my goal is to create a featured topic on Seattle Sounders FC, and getting this list to featured seems to be something that must be done to that end. Thanks in advance for your help and advice. --SkotyWATC 16:02, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Signpost quote
Hi Giants, hope you're doing well. As you know, we recently promoted our 2,000th FL, and I am writing a short piece about it in The Signpost. I am also mentioning your promotion to FL director. Do you think you can give us a few words (on my talkpage is fine) about why you decided to become director and why you enjoy contributing to the FL process? Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 04:34, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for the quote. Dabomb and TRM both seem to be offline. We need ?two right-side pics for the FL right-up, preferably not the politician and sports themes at the top. Do you have any in mind from FLs promoted in the last year or so (I guess the last SP right-up was at 1500, so between 1500 and 2000 FLs?). Tony (talk) 11:32, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
Favor, but not for me, really
My colleague, The Writer 2.0, has been inspired by the success of the history of the Jets to move ahead and try to get New York Jets to FA. I figure you would give him an informed outside view. NYJ
Thanks again for your suggestions at PR. My hands are a bit full but I'm confident I can get the issues you brought up squared away. That said, I was wondering if you could possibly take a look at the rewrite of the lead in my sandbox; I tried to incorporate some elements of the Pats and Bears leads. I also wanted to consult you on whether or not the paragraphs of the Jets' first rounders, also found in the sandbox, should be added to the article and what could I do about the Logos, Uniforms as the images are not familiar territory. I would appreciate the input. Thanks! -- The Writer 2.0 Talk 20:10, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
FL question
I am one of the main contributors to two very popular (in pageviews) lists, and I was wondering if either of those ever could be a featured list in theory. I doubt it, because they are, contrary to most featured lists, not a clearly defined, finished list, but lists that probably never can be complete. I am talking about List of best-selling books and List of best-selling fiction authors. I am not asking whether they currently meet FL criteria, but whether such lists with those topics can conceivably ever be FLs. Fram (talk) 08:59, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your encouraging reply, it's better than whay i hoped for! I'll have to think about what to do with them, perhaps some form of peer review first, or a more through check of how other FLs look and what is expected of them (probably a more thorough and better sourced lead for starters). Fram (talk) 19:11, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
WikiCup 2011 March newsletter
We are half way through round two of the WikiCup, which will end on 28 April. Of the 64 current contestants, 32 will make it through to the next round; the two highest in each pool, and the 16 next highest scorers. At the time of writing, our current overall leader is Hurricanehink (submissions) with 231 points, who leads Pool H. Piotrus (submissions) (Pool G) also has over 200 points, while 9 others (three of whom are in Pool D) have over 100 points. Remember that certain content (specifically, articles/portals included in at least 20 Wikipedias as of 31 December 2010 or articles which are considered "vital") is worth double points if promoted to good or featured status, or if it appears on the main page in the Did You Know column. There were some articles last round which were eligible for double points, but which were not claimed for. For more details, see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring.
A running total of claims can be seen here.
