Just a suggestion for Roguelike sourcing

[edit]

Hi Garrie,

I see in the AfD for Seven day roguelike that you're looking for items that meet WP:RS. I would suggest using google and combining Roguelike with big-name sources of gaming content like 1UP.com or IGN. Typically you'll find a few items for more esoteric subjects (like Roguelike) that will be less easily challenged as improper sourcing.

Just a thought I had which might help. Cheers, Lankybugger 01:00, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(Responding from my Talk page)
No worries, believe me when I say I understand your feelings precisely. Recently an article on the Metroidvania genre which I was extensively involved in editing was deleted due to an AfD. Good luck with the sourcing. I'd also suggest dropping by this page (a potential Wikipedia policy in the process of being approved) and weighing in with your support for or against it. The gist of it, as I understand things to be right now, is a seperate deletion process for bad articles (like hoaxes and such) and articles which merely lack sources (perhaps such as the Seven day roguelike, though I've had no luck finding sources for it). The articles which lack sources would, under this policy, have a much longer lead time until deletion (specifically, a fourteen day lead time) which would allow a greater chance for unsourced articles to be properly researched and corrected.
Just a thought, ignore it if you like.
Cheers, Lankybugger 05:12, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Precisely. Essentially the process here is designed not to get rid of articles without sourcing, but to give editors more time to work with the article to bring it up to par. It also seperates those articles which lack sourcing which might otherwise be made useful due to editors with a dedication to the subject from those which have been created and then subsequently abandoned. Lankybugger 05:23, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As regards 1UP.com, this article would be a legitimate source. 1UP.com is owned by Ziff Davis and is also doubles as the host for online aspects in Electronic Gaming Monthly. The man who wrote the article I linked, Jeremy Parish, is the features editor for the site (and thus he passes by default). Lankybugger 05:25, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see what you mean. Yes, this is somewhat true. However, there are plenty of articles (especially on 1UP.com) which are dedicated to non-commercial games. Just as an example (though it doesn't have any Roguelikes I could see), 1UP.com's Freeloader series of articles was dedicated specifically to free games online. There are others, as well. Lankybugger 05:52, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You voted for Mulesing, which has been selected as Australian collaboration. Please help to improve it in any way you can. Thanks. --Scott Davis Talk 12:14, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sorry I'm new to editing Wiki and missed the reference to Tri-solven in the methods section.

I must have forgotten to remove the reference request after inserting the link to the permit. I may edit the entry to indicate that Tri-solven isn't registered, only permitted for minor use. Dunhill BKK 07:44, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Response at User talk:Dunhill BKKGarrie 05:01, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The AVA article may refer to the use of products, however, I'm pointing out that the product has not been registered for use. To become registered the product would have to overcome a significant shortfall in metabolism data, considering the new actives included in the product that are currently not registered for use in any food producing animals. The permit scheme is supposed to allow for minor use, and this may be a broad consideration of minor use for the current permit. Dunhill BKK 01:08, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wrestling

CANNON The slam publication is not a wrestling publication, it is a canadian sports publication. And from what I understand its owned by Calgary Sun, so the article as it appears is the Calgary Sun version. JN322 15:42, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Garrie, I much appreciate you response to my first contribution. I must say, getting the hang of this environment isn't all straightforward, but your suggestions have been spot on. One bit of further advice would be great. Is there some way to save work on a developing article as you go? I just had the disagreeable experience of loosing the lot by swithing to another page before saving. The only thing I can think of is to produce the piece in a word processor & then paste it - but there must be a better way. [edit]

I have now added the information you requested for the birthdate of Laurie Lawrence.

You could have asked me for the information with more courtesy than you did, and I am not impressed that, while you criticised me for not adding the information in the first instance, you did not bother taking the time, or effort, to say thank you to me for creating the article in the first place.

On a final note, the information you asked for is not required when adding birthdates to biographical articles on Wikipedia (check biographical articles if you do not believe me). Figaro 23:56, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2000 Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony

[edit]

If you would like help with this information, perhaps you might like to say 'please' to me. Also, you might like to show me the courtesy of telling me exactly how I am supposed to fill in the 'people' requirement for the DVD, and where I am supposed to put the verification templates. Perhaps it might be best if I scan the back covers of both the DVD and CD covers, for Wikipedia, so that you can fill in the required information, yourself — after all, you know exactly what you want to achieve with regard to both of them.

As you made a reference to The Goodies' episode, A Kick in the Arts, I would like to comment that the word you edited was actually intended to be "disappearing" (unfortunately, through tiredness,I accidentally omitted to add the word 'been' before "disappearing", when I was writing the plot). Anyway, I have decided to leave the word as "disappeared", as it now stands. Figaro 09:54, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(re: John Carne Bidwill) The site from which you got this is not clear. It says that most of the books on the Australian project Gutenberg are in the public domain, but not that the dictionary of biography is. Is it? In addition, if it is, you simply must note that the text is copied from the other site, or the article incorporates text from the other site. However, your interpretation of what Bidwill did is incorrect, he did NOT publish the name, William Jackson Hooker did, that's why the plant is called Araucaria bidwillii Hook.. The "Hook." is the botanical authority abbreviation for the author who published about the plant in the London Journal of Botany naming it Araucaria bidwillii, namely Hooker published an article naming the plant after Bidwill. KP Botany 00:19, 17 January 2007 (UTC) As mentioned on KP's talk page:[reply]

WP:ADB indicates the Dictionary of Australian Biography is public domain... I took their word for it.
From Project Gutenberg of Australia

Project Gutenberg of Australia produces books in electronic form (ebooks) which are freely available to the public. These ebooks may be read on a computer using a simple text editor or viewer. The books are in the 'public domain' and all have been prepared by volunteers. More than 20,000 other ebooks are available from our sister site Project Gutenberg in the United States.

Hope this clears the copyright issue up. Garrie 01:30, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you read the Project Gutenberg Australia page carefully, the statement you quote appears to apply to "ebooks in the public domain." So, go click on this, the first link on their page and search for Serle's Dictionary of Australian Biography. And it's not there, so it appears this is NOT a book in the public domain according to their website. Wikipedia wants you to err on the side of caution when it comes to copyright infringements, so, until you can find something clearly putting this in the public domain, it really should come down. KP Botany 02:35, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good thorough checking on the copyright issues, by the way--this makes it much easier for everyone. I will check my Stern to see if you can add the list of plants named after him that Hesperian provided. KP Botany 14:20, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. KP Botany invited me to have a look. I did some copyediting; then, thinking that KP Botany had written the page, I left some other feedback on his/her talk page. You might like to have a look. Hesperian 22:48, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to see it put to use. I'm not precious about my user subspace, so feel free to add links to material of the same ilk. Hesperian 23:01, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You can also just bookmark Hesperian's sources page. I find it useful any time I need to look up something Aussia botany, and I'm also too lazy to make my own, plus I once created a sandbox or two and never could find them again. Yes, Bidwill's the only, so I'm formatting a list of plants named after him from IPNI and will post it today, italicized, and linked, I didn't include authorities, as many are complex. Someone will need to column or table it as appropriate. I will post it on the article's talk page. KP Botany 22:11, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if you turned this off or not... you're in the history of the page...

Do you know what's going on here? I know that there seemed to be a problem with templates making the numbers wrong. Seems to me the simple solution is to only incude links from article space - even if the link is from a template in article space it probably reflects real need for the article, rather than project bloating figures through templates in talk-space (which aren't so regulated).Garrie 23:31, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ornithology stubs

[edit]
Please excuse me butting in - I believe that stubs of organisations - that are relative to ornithology and conservation groups are notable - regardless - and are quite different from local historical societies - as they in most cases are national - and have had significant positions and activities in the general history of australia and conservation issues as well. Excuse the butting in! SatuSuro 03:46, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing that out - its a good guide to starting arts in general - I am concerned that the status of conversation and scientific organisations in australia in wp australia seems to lack the numbers of editors with fervour and passion that some other subjects have dedicated to them - and I feel a need to support what might seem obscure at first - but which develop into the great grid of what constitutes the rich fabric of living in our strange continent (dont ask me to define it though - the current debates on australia/contintent plate etc leave me sort of very tired and wanting to tag indonesian islands stubs again... :( SatuSuro 04:03, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Garrie and SatuSuro for comments. Appreciated, and basically agreed with. Yes I do find it much simpler to continue a discussion to the page it starts on, and I may make further comment there. Cheers. Maias 04:39, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eglinton

[edit]

Thanks for that - I'll review the pre-settlement section tomorrow evening and main to Mooro (which I can add any missing information to). Pipidinny Swamp is actually located in Eglinton, so I'll keep that part, but broadly I agree with the discussion you pointed me to - that if we did every suburb like this it would be utterly pointless. Orderinchaos78 10:58, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have reworded the History section to take account of the discussion. The Aboriginal section now includes one sentence which introduces the Aboriginal involvement, then a more extended version of the Pipidinny Swamp part of the crocodile legend. I decided the heritage trail bit actually belonged under early European settlement, so reworded it and moved it to that section. It's always good getting outside feedback because I didn't immediately notice anything wrong with it when reviewing it before requesting assessment. Orderinchaos78 12:11, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I actually agree with you, it's more trying to figure out how to represent it. Basically the Swan River runs through Perth, and the Moore River is beyond Perth's northern frontier (kind of like the Parramatta and Hawkesbury re Sydney I guess), and the Mooro moved across that region and inland to the Darling Range. Perth is essentially fairly flat, and about 4km inland for most of the above distance there is a chain of lakes and swamps that runs parallel to the coast. It seems they mostly lived along the edges of these, and Pipidinny Swamp in Eglinton was not only one of these but was part of their tribe's creation story. The Yaberoo-Budjara PDF describes the story but I also found a closer-to-the-source telling of it in a book at the State Library [1], and the 40,000 is pretty solid against two sources - Neville Green (1979; 1984) [2] [3] and R.K.Brittain (1990) [4] - I have to get page numbers and full references for those, and will probably do so on Monday. Sylvia Hallam (1991) also did some work on it but it was largely derivative from Brittain- the Hallam work has been republished as a chapter in a local history book about the City of Wanneroo [5]. Putting it all here is no excuse for it not being in the article, by the way, and it shall be put in as soon as I can think of a non-intrusive way to do so. Just thought I'd let you see what I have as, not being close to it, you may see something blindingly obvious that isn't coming to me. Thanks for your work and comments to date on this. Palm Island, Queensland Australian Collaboration of the Fortnight

[edit]

Hi Garrie, you recently edited and showed an interest in proper referencing being brought to the Palm Island article, I share this desire for better referencing in Wikipedia. You might (or might not) :) be interested to know that Palm has become the latest Australian Collaboration of the Fortnight, the work you did to help out with Mulesing was great and I'm hoping to recruit you to help out with Palm. Particularly to help out with referencing and links. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 08:00, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Garrie, I have access through our local library to a searchable on-line media monitor, I would like to copy full text articles over to a sandbox under the scope of either my user name or the Palm Island article. All these articles are obviously copywrited and it would be a breach of that copywrite to publish them Verbatim into the Palm Island article, however I would like to know if that would apply to a temporary sandbox. The idea would be for me to copy articles to a sandbox which myself and all the other editors who are working on the Palm Island Collaboration can use as information sources (and then reference the information as being from the original article). I will also ask Mattinbgn. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! WikiTownsvillian 04:11, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. Personally I haven't had much trouble finding online news sources for Palm Island, I have back-referenced a fair bit of the 2004 riot and death-in-custody controversy section. Copyright is something to be very careful of. If you were to do it for one or two articles in your own user space, for a definate period of time, then that's one thing... personally I think you're better off saving to pc the relevant text. By all means, keep adding lists of online refs to talk pages. They are useful things in a lot of ways. But my verdict is, keep the copyright material on the host website. The other thing to bear in mind is, if you do what you are suggesting it may be quite difficult for other editors to correctly source the material they are using. ie if you copy the text but leave off ... the orig website, url, publisher, published date, authors name - then it is no longer verifiable information.

Don't over-estimate the number of ppl that will / are working on the article while it is ACOTF, either ;).Garrie 04:32, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice/reply, there's a lot online about recent events, I was more talking about feature stories about Palm and newspaper stories from when the death in custody and riots occurred and maybe even further back, I know the Townsville Bulletin have done some in depth features on Palm generally which are not published on-line, they are examples of material that I was talking about.
I take your point about being cautious when it comes to copywrite material! which is why I thought it best to gauge other's opinion on the issue. I will happily take your sage advice not to copy the text over but I will continue to use the media service myself to add info as I have done in several articles so far. all information about the author, who published it, what page and date it was published... are all provided by the media monitor, so I don't source a URL, I source the original document. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 05:00, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Regards providing an URL - I have seen the same done in the past. Reference is to the paper-based publication (publisher, location, date/issue number etc) but a URL is provided - just if you try to access the URL you need to log in. There is no problem in providing such a URL - any subscriber can verify the validity. It's like referring to a show that's on cable TV, or a book that's only held in the Parlimentary Library in Canberra / Brisbane - just because it's not easy to verify, doesn't mean the information isn't useful to someone trying to verify the info.
But if you're putting the URL, make sure you include the access date.Garrie 22:06, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
See also - Wikipedia talk:Citing sources#Subscription sites - basically, what I said.Garrie 22:34, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi GarrieIrons, thank you for more sage advice. I will start using links straight away as recommended to demonstrate when and though what medium I accessed the source. Although I do think there is a bit of a distinction as I consider the online subscription service I am using as just a tool to find content which they reproduce on their site. I think the topic of discussion at Wikipedia talk:Citing sources#Subscription sites is more applicable to things like Crikey where original content is online though subscription. Whereas I am using the media monitor in a way that is more equivalent to using Google, as a research tool to find information about a topic faster and more efficiently, however the media monitor is not the copy write holder and only reproduces the content from the newspapers, it would be much easier for someone looking to verify sources to go to their local uni or state library and find the source using the citation rather than subscribing to the particular media monitor (one of many) that I am using. Food for thought. WikiTownsvillian 23:44, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS please feel free to check out material I am drafting in my sandbox and let me know if there is anything additional you think I might modify in my wikipeding. I have only made it up to 2000 in The Australian so far :) WikiTownsvillian 00:27, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Happy anniversary, and thanks for all your help! WikiTownsvillian 05:00, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GarrieIrons, I'm not sure I see the relationship between the Select Committee info and the other materials I have in the sandbox... why did you not just put the para straight into the main article? Not that I have any problem with the para and reference, just not sure why you've put it into a sandbox. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 05:18, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi GarrieIrons, thanks for the positive contribution to my sandbox, I'm happy with it as is and have moved it to the main article for you, I don't see how it could cause an edit conflict, but then I haven't been following it too carefully, I will watch it and make sure it is not hard done by. As you suggested it would be a good idea for me to uploaded the info from my sandbox in sections and not in chunks so it is not confusing, will start doing so shortly and I will be as careful as possible when integrating the contents of my sandbox into the main article so as not to cause general chaos. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 05:36, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for all your great contributions to the Palm Island article over the past couple of weeks during its term as the Collaboration, I think it’s amazing how much it has been improved to this point. It was probably at Stub level when we got into it, now I think it would be competitive for Good or A Class article and perhaps over the next few months it will get up to the standard of Feature.
There’s only one day left of it being the Collaboration so if we have any last ideas as to how it can be improved lets be bold and get into it now. But most of all I just wanted to thank you for all your work and help before it was finished. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 08:30, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uranquinty

[edit]

Thanks for the message - I post my reply to your talk page as well, as follows .... The best I can do is to list the link that JROBBO himself provided which definitely shows that Uranquinty is still 'in use'. It is not about buying a ticket from Wagga to Uranquinty it is about buying a ticket from (say) Sydney to Uranquinty - so (do you like this evil grin?) we need someone to write a travel supplement in the Sydney Morning Herald. Still - with respect - saying the station is still in use and giving a reference to that fact as we have should be enough verification - god knows there are far worse verifications in other articles. If not - well it just is no skin of my nose - I don't care enough about train articles to get upset about the rules getting in the way of the facts. --VS talk...images 06:26, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Riverina

[edit]

Hi Garrie. Thanks for the feedback on the Riverina article. The ADF contribution to the Riverina economy is a very good idea and should certainly be included. As for Forest Hill and Kapooka, while both are in the Riverina, I would consider Forest Hill a suburb of Wagga Wagga (see Template:Wagga Wagga City) and my recollection of Kapooka (I spent some time at 1RTB when I was younger), is that while certainly not in Wagga, is more a defence housing complex than a town. While they should be mentioned in the article, I personally wouldn't think them suitable for the Riverina template. Of course these things come down to matters of opinion only. VirtualSteve has done most of the work with the template and may have a different opinion. Thanks again.--Mattinbgn/ talk 22:12, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I like your reminder to include defence into Riverina article also. Like Mattinbgn I spent a bit of time in Kapooka when I was a little younger also. Kapooka itself is also listed as an actual suburb of Wagga GNBof NSW I say actual because at only 8.71km from Wagga it is even closer than Forest Hill at 9.69kms and San Isadore also listed as a suburb of WW at 9.08km. In my own view when you pass Kapooka (south), Bomen (north) at 9.03kms, Forest Hill (east) and San Isadore (west) you have drawn a rough circle around the Wagga township. I say this because I have seen lists that include towns/localities as far as 51 kms away as suburbs when they are in fact areas within the council area. Hope that assists? --VS talk...images 22:58, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ariah Park common knowledge

Hi - saw your comment at Mattinbgn. I think a useful place to put such points is at the article talk page pending references being found. That way the info won't be lost and somebody can pursue it. Regards --Golden Wattle talk 22:43, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Barmedman

[edit]

My two cents - Ariah Park is in Temora Shire which is part of the Riverina. We have included Mirrool because it is literally at the edge of Coolamon, Temora and Bland Shire. However the vast majority of the Bland Shire is in Central West and Barmedman is 36 kms north west of Temora. In my view that is too far into the Central West.--VS talk...images 23:01, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Australian category deletions

[edit]

The category was listed (and still is actually) as being up for deletion, at Wikipedia:Australian_Wikipedians'_notice_board/AfD, which provides a sub-menu of the Australian Wikipedians' noticeboard. It might pay to add this noticeboard sub-page to your watchlist to keep abreast of future category deletion nominations. Australian categories nominated for deletion are added at this menu subpage rather than at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Australia, which is primarily used for listing articles only. -- Longhair\talk 02:56, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As they say, there's no such thing as a silly question, and you learn something every day :) The subpage is somewhat hidden, but it's still able to be watchlisted for future deletion notifications. Quite a few use it. -- Longhair\talk 02:13, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I don't know much about the conflict involving Elonka, I'm just concentrating on what I can see is happening. I think the addition of a local tag was a reasonable step, but the removal of the tag without any improvement isn't particularly helpful. Likewise the prod tag may have been a reasonable step, but removing the subsequent redirect without improving the article isn't particularly helpful. I think one problem is that Rebecca seemingly made no attempt to improve the article so it at least asserted notability. Speaking generally it's frustrating to see no improvement to articles for months, then as soon as they are proposed for deletion the articles are significantly improved. Re: The Moore you do...

[edit]

Hey, I just checked out your article from New Articles (OZ). Gotta say, great article for an academic / lawyer.

Having said that - it's in "obvious" need of a copyedit to introduce some section headings and breaks in line with the MOS. Currently it sorta-kinda looks like you threw four different obits into the same article (I know you didn't but it's kind of how the three screenfuls in one section looks).

Having said all that, there are heaps of ppl around who can and do do copyedits, which are comparatively easy compared to doing the research and getting the info into the article. Well done! Is Society of Comparative Legisaltion worth creating as a redirect to British Institute ... ? I'm amazed that Corowa Conference is a redlink! Hey, when they took the second photo - was it the Old Law buiding then or did it get that name at a later date? I bet at some point it was just the Law Building. Then some bugger came and built the new Law Building, but people get sick of calling things New XXX (except, Newtown, because calling Nettown, Town, is just plain stupid!) Garrie 00:07, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I typically don't include section breaks in most new biographical articles that I write, simply because most of them are merely cobbled together from the immediately available sources and so usually lack a thematic structure, instead being mainly chronological. Next chance I get to visit the library, I'll be able to get access to some better material to flesh the article out more; I'm hoping to get access to some reviews of his published work, for example.
As to the other points, the Society of Comparative Legislation was one of two bodies which merged to form The British Institute of International and Comparative Law, so a redirect wouldn't really be appropriate in this instance. As for the image, "Old Law building" is indeed the current name, it has had several others, because it was originally the only building in the University. I'm not entirely sure what it was called when Moore was around, but if you can find it out then it would be a good addition to the caption. --bainer (talk) 15:00, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cooks River Photos

[edit]

Hi Garrie, I checked out Google Maps - Cooksriver2 is a photo taken towards Airport Drive - the yellow sculpture gives it away. Cooksriver1 is a photo taken from the northern bank of the river near the railway line, facing east towards the Princes Highway overbridge. Hope that helps. NewArtBot and deleted articles

[edit]

I see what you mean. The articles certainly existed at the time the bot read them (it looks if certain keywords are in the article). The bot does not check if an article was deleted then it dumps the search results to its subpage. It only checks that an article was not already reported on the board. I can add the check that if it was deleted, but I am not sure it will help much.

Typically I run bot daily (overnightly) from my home, it needs about ~3h to process ~3000 new articles of the day. So the check would only catch articles deleted during a period less than 3h (3h for the newest articles, zero for the oldest article of the day). Alex Bakharev 05:22, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Merger: August 2006

[edit]

Hi!

I know this seems a bit overshot, but by any chance do you remember your proposal on the Westfield Shopping Centres? All the pages you had mentioned in your proposal have grown since then, with a lot of contribution on your part, great stuff! :> But not all of them are mentioned on List_of_Westfield_Group_shopping_centres_in_Australia. Could you add them in?

xCentaur | 20:47, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, you're right, I understand what you mean. About the first, between 'malls' and 'shopping centres', I'd say whichever is used more widely should hold the main article the other can be a re-direct. That seems to match with what you said about use in local dialect. The second bit, about having a ton of sub-standard articles, I feel thats just not right. I'd like to help out. Although I don't know much about Australia, I'm sure there must be some way I could pitch in? I completely agree with you - quality over quantity. xCentaur | 08:46, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Usually, when warning a user for vandalism edits, you might want to start at level 1. Your use of level four was seemingly a bit too much, and in that case may have suggested a level 2. However, all people make mistakes when they start out, and this is trivial. For more info on vandal patrol, you might want to check out WP:CUV. --210physicq (c) 04:49, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GarrieIrons - thanks for your comments. As you would have seen Boinka was not a hoax - in fact it has a rich history. (Actually I was quite happy with the article and its rich start). I take your point on not including it as a town - but if you have a look at the article again you will see that I had not done so - referring to it only as a locality and it is (again as is already posted on that page not within Mildura (it is 174km from that City). To the point of whether localities should or should not be included .... We had the same discussion when constructing Template:Riverina with the consensus agreeing to include localities/communities as a part of the template providing that such a place met strict guidelines (including that the location/community was actually still physically locatable in some way) - see here for details of that discussion. However I realise that by not including the word communities in the template that might not seem so clear so I have adjusted that part this morning at Template:Sunraysia. Finally to your point about www.travelmate.com.au - the link actually goes directly to a search page (a map is not being suggested - only distances are) where any person can type place A and place B to see the distances between the two locations. The alternate - given that there are at least 4 locations being referenced is to make the info box totally unworkable). Cheers. --VS talk 21:21, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, your suggestions worked well. I have added a couple headings to the lead and demoted the states. Also started a separate article for South Australia. The others could probably stay in the article for now since they arent that long and have mostly redlinks --Astrokey44 08:25, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem on the prod. I created it from an AFC|AfC submission, and was pretty borderline about whether it qualified or not (especially since the league doesn't even have a page yet), but I eventually decided that since there was an Aussie Baseball Project recently started, and working on building these kind of pages I'd give this one a chance. I won't contest the prod at all, but I copied your notice to the talk page of the original AfC contributor incase he wants to try to fight for it. Of course, since he's only ever made 2 posts (both working on this article on AfC) it's unlikely he'll do anything about it, but I still figure I'll give him a few days to work on it, rather than just speedy-author it myself. --Maelwys 12:02, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

West Torrens Cricket Club

[edit]

Hi. Not sure if you were having a go at me about my deletion of the last edit to the article, or if you are saying the article itself may be a candidate for WP:PROD? If it's me then I probably deserve it for a fairly harsh treatment of a good-faith edit. If its the article, then there would be an enormous number of other Cricket Ckub articles that also need the same, as they have far less content and notability evidenced than WTCC. The article seemed active and slowly being developed so personally I was happy to see how it pans out (Under 14's results aside). I'll leave it to you to decide if you want to nominate it and let the discussion take place as per the normal procedures. Cheers. Pudgey 04:39, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again thanks for your reply about the Airport Vs airport I put it as capital because if you look at this link [6] it says that the Airport name is Muttaburra Airport plus almost all the searches I have done show Airport with the capital A, Thanks for the conversion... last time I tried to get one off Google I had trouble but it seems to work now ??? got me stuffed,

I had a pilots licence before I had a plane just like have a car licence but no car, I think some people get one just so they can say that they can fly a plane but I don't let anyone fly mine unless they have over 1000 hours in that type of plane and I never let anyone fly my chopper...they cost way to much. I will go and add that info now but please let me know you thoughts on the A vs. a in Airport. if I can find more links to the name of the Airport I will post them here for you to look at. thanks again Thuringowacityrep 05:37, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Garrie, Yes, I am brazillian, and a bodyboarder. But the australians find bodyboarding notable! They are currently the most numerous in the world tour. Damian King is a two-time world champion, and they lead the radical revolution that changed the way bodyboarding was surfed! The only things that stands in their way to be the ultimate power in the sport are: brazillian Guilherme Tâmega, Hawaiian Mike Stewart and Hawaiian Jeff Hubbard. There are plenty of bodyboarding DVDs hailing from Australia, and Damian King recently make a 1 US$ million sponsorship deal. I really thing that bodyboard is much more notable in Australia than anywhere else. See Fluidzone You will be amazed in what the community (mainly Australian) are doing and how notable this sport looks to be in the Gold Coast. Regards and thanx for the support. Well - first you need an account. Then go to WP:MOVE for a step by step of how to do it. But basically, once you have an account which has been active for a period of time (which gets changed every now and then depending on vandalism activity I think), you get a new tab "move" at the top of the page - and it becomes a very easy process.
There is also Wikipedia:Requested moves for pages which need an admin to sort out (eg, a page was created at Original page name then moved to New page name. To move it back may need an admin). Garrie 23:33, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You have expressed concern about the Notability of a number of articles relating to The AC, i am here to adress these concerns.

This ground is a first-class cricket ground, and it is listed on the baggygreen website, the ground plays host to Western Fury cricket games, Public Schools Association games aswell. Not to forget on Friday, when Justin Langer was playing there, oh and also that the Fremantle Dockers use it for training purposes. I think i have established notability? or not? [edit]

Just from the articles I see sufficient information that CSD:A1 and A7 dont apply. Being from Perth, I know enough about Bevan Lawrence without googling, he maybe sufficiently notable even if the article doesnt convey it yet. White and Pownall articles establish notability IMHO. The Bryan article I located his AIF service record when the editors were first writing about the various houses at Aquinas College, there was information in there that has yet to be included in the article, this more likely a merge subject into one of the other AC articles. I suggest you take these to AfD and see what the community thinks. Gnangarra 06:47, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Headings

[edit]

I have just looked over your article Paul Sait, which looks quite well done for a fairly seasoned player with an excellent record. Obviously it could be improved by a photo of him taken during his career, but that might be hard to get hold of legitimately. Please reveiew WP:MSH, in particular section heading should use the same capitalisation as article headings: first word and proper nouns are upper case, everything else lower case. Garrie 22:42, 28 March 2007 (UTC) Thx for the comments. I'm not big on photos, seems to me that editors who add them then spend time & energy justifying legit use & defending them from deletion. I'll leave that to others. My out-take from reading WP:MSH and your comments is that my section header "Club Career" should be "Club career". Are you saying more than that ? Sticks66 04:03, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, arguing the toss over photos is best left to others. Some of us know people with their own match photos though and anything you took yourself is yours to contribute if you so wish. Yes, "Club career" and similar for other section headings with more than one word. Some people want the section, paragraph and line number others want plain english... ;) You seemed to have been consistent across several articles which is why I came here rather than just fixing it. But having said that, I can't find anywhere else I can fault your work! (I'm sure I looked first though...) So please, let me take my foot out of my mouth and appologise. Garrie 04:50, 29 March 2007 (UTC) No you're quite right. Very many of my articles had the 2nd word in section headers starting with caps. Now fixed. May I ask you something. Hi there Ian

Nice start to an article. I like to see articles about transpor infrastructure, I especially like articles which tell me something about a road that I can't find out by looking at a map. You have included some statements about how the road becomes important if there are any problems on the main road, is this something which has been documented and you could provide a source for?
Is there anything readily available discussing the history (surveying, construction, upgrade) of the road? If there is some information online that I could use to expand the article, please feel free to point me in the right direction.

Garrie 23:34, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

G'day Garrie,
Here's the story (some of which can be read on the Tasman Bridge and Bowen Bridge articles). In 1975, the Ferderally operated bulk carrier Lake Illawarra slammed into Tasman bridge (a state owned bridge). I'm not sure of the politics at the time, but on top of rebuilding the Tasman, the Federal government also saw it as their reponsibility to put the money fourth for a new bridge (Bowen Bridge) 10km noerth of the existing one. Goodwood Road was constructed at this time as an approach road to the bridge.
All roads on the western shore Brooker Highway and Goodwood Road are multy lane as is the Bowen Bridge, however the majority of the East Derwent Highway and its approach roads are not. Over the past 20 years When ever something is wrong with the Bridgewater Bridge or Tasman Bridge and/or their approach roads traffic is normally diverted to the Bowen, and thats where the problem starts, as while the bridge can, the eastern shore roads in that area can not handle the massive amounts of traffic (compared to normal). At the Beginning of this year the Bridgewater bridge was out for 3 weeks due to problems with its lifting mechinism. The Tasman Bridge also has a bad rep for car accidents. All of This is commen Knowledge in Hobart. I'm currently sifting through archived copies of The Mercury to get that refernece i know you want, I've torn the net apart looking but there is so little info on tassie roads here (part of the reason i decided to focus my attention here). Any question dont hesitate to reply. Wiki ian 07:42, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User:02blythed and his under-19 cricketers

[edit]

Hi, I have noticed that you have put a handful of articles created by User:02blythed up for deletion as per notability issues - and rightly so. However, I have found that one of them Trevor Ward was actually a significant county player and so have tidied the article up a bit for the user (hopefully) to see how to wikify such an article. I have mentioned this to him on his talk page. I was just wondering whether it would be kinder to him to give him a bit of time to try and clean up any articles he has created and then we can be in a better position to judge notability. He has also been inclined to remove any wikify/prod templates regardless of a change in content or without justification.

Obviously if they don't improve and are still non-notable, then the deletion process should stand (I suppose he has the 5 days anyway). My guess is many are in fact non-notable, but I'm prepared to assume good faith and see what happens.

Best wishes, –MDCollins (talk) 01:31, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the prompt response. I will wait for further contribution then AfD the article as cricket-related and see what happens. I have proded it previously and the Aquinas College wikipedia kruftian killed the prod without improving the article, the most he has said is "Western Fury play there" (I'm guessing, once, when they couldn't get onto their real game due to a PURA Cup clash).Garrie 04:23, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wisden

[edit]

Hi. It seems to me that the problem with the apparent lack of references can be largely solved by moving some of the External Links items to References, where they more properly belong. I'm going to do this and, since you say that you're away till the 12th, take the liberty of removing your flagging of the article. JH (talk page) 08:58, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"My main problem is with "...the operator of the world's highest traffic cricket website..." I don't see how Cricinfo's claim about themselves has any relevance to the Wisden article, though. (It would have relevance in an article about Cricinfo themselves, obviously.) But Wisden now own Cricinfo, and so the Cricinfo section on the Almanack can reasonably be considered authoritative. In particular, one of the three references in the article is to a piece that was originally published in an edition of Witself. I could replace it by a reference to that issue of Wisden if you'd be happier, but web articles are more accessible to more people. JH (talk page) 17:08, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I see the cause of the confusion. You were talking about Wisden Cricketer's Almanac, which actually redirected to Wisden Group. I was talking about Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, which is the article where you flagged up the need for references. I've now corrected the redirect so that Wisden Cricketer's Almanac goes where one would expect. JH (talk page) 18:31, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Australian Championships

[edit]

I named the articles the way I did because they were known as "The Australian Championships" back then, but based on various complains, it sounds like "XXXX Australian Championships (tennis)" would be a more appropriate title. As for attribution, my winners/runners-up are taken directly from the List of Australian Open Men's Singles champions and List of Australian Open Women's Singles champions articles. I have no idea what the sources for those articles are, but perhaps a link back would also be in order. --dantheox 04:53, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's a discussion of the proper naming ongoing at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tennis. It seemed inappropriate to do anything until a consensus is reached. --dantheox 07:00, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do you still have a deletion view on this page

[edit]

Question as above - I tend to agree with you but your thoughts are now?.....--VS talk 07:16, 13 April 2007 (UTC) Replied on the article in question.Garrie 09:13, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Agreed - and from my perspective notability and verifiability should go hand in hand. Notability isn't proven until it is asserted through a second, third and fourth reliable external source - else quite frankly anything can be notable. I didn't want to start any sort of edit war but I'm not quite sure how to handle comments like this by an otherwise good editor - short of deleting content on the article that isn't referenced but that would appear churlish to some. --VS talk 12:11, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Woolungasaurus

[edit]

G'day, Garrie! You must be an Aussie, 'cause you new Gazzster must be short for Gazza! Nice to find another Aussie. Thanks for the message. Point well taken. I guess the prehistoric animal editors sometimes use specific terms so much that they forget to explain them. Mea culpa. This is the new para; if its still no good, let me know. The added phrase is italcised.

Woolungasaurus glendowerensis ('Glendower's Woolunga lizard', named after an Aboriginal mythical reptile, Persson 1960) was a plesiosaur, a large extinct marine reptile of the family Elasmosauridae.

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Gazzster (talkcontribs) 17:30, 13 April 2007

hmmmm still unhappy... to me it needs to say dinosaur... but maybe that's not the right word which is why I didn't change it (and also, are you using boilerplate text to make articles?) Garrie 09:22, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know what boilerplate means, so I'll say no. If it means plagiarism, absolutely not. Plesiosaurs are not dinosaurs, and are unrelated. The taxonomic box on the right makes that clear.Cheers--Gazzster 10:04, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New South Head Road

[edit]

Sure thing I'll take another picture when I go past the sign one day on an afternoon, have you had any luck with further information for the article? Bandwagonman 08:57, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I had no idea the road dated back as far as 1830. I am interested to know where we could find information on the history of the road as I presume it would stretch back to the early days of Sydney as there is evidence of the roads existence in the 1800s such as Bentley's Bridge (1830) and Kincoppal-Rose Bay, School of the Sacred Heart, Sydney (1882) among other things. Also it would be interesting to note the relation between Old South and New South Head Road. Would you know anyone or anywhere where I could access this information. Bandwagonman 05:49, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hah! Old South Head Road... not until New South Head Road has at least more than one category. Thanks for all the advice I have found a possible source of information at a Woolahra Council local history centre, it should help me develop information on the Woollahra area and possibly I will find similar centres for other areas in Sydney. Sydney Children’s Hospital

[edit]

Sorry I still have to put more inline referencing in the article, (I like to write articles first and often get too lazy to immediately put referencing in straight away.) As for the Florence Nightingale comment that came from the Wikipedia article on the Prince of Wales Hospital, I doubted its reliability but trusted it as a Wikipedia comment, I feel it may be possible vandalism or an un-sourced comment, I will remove it for now and add it to both the Sydney Children’s Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital talk page to see if someone can clarify if it is true with a reference or if it is pure vandalism. I have improved the New South Head Road Article, but I still have to add a few more references mainly for the tram history and inline references for dates and facts from the Woollahra Council, sorry if this causes any confusion in the short term. Also I will be able to complete the Old South Head Road article soon and get a few more photos for both old south head roads. I noticed that one of your current projects is improving articles on Sydney roads, do you have any other suggestions for future articles or stub improvements? As my current job involves spending a lot of time traveling a variety of Sydney roads. One last thing I also noticed that you are from the McMansions area in one of your comments and I feel the area is of enough notability to add as a Wikipedia article on the area clarifying what the area is to general users, do you feel up to the task? AWB

In response to your question, I don't believe that AWB will facilitate a bulk rename of pages. If you're wanting to do a bulk-rename, though, I'd get consensus before you push such a change through just to be on the safe side. And then if you're already working to get consensus, you might also be able to find someone with a bot that can do the rename rather painlessly. SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:04, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ouse District High School

[edit]

Garrie, it may be better to take Ouse District High School to AfD rather than speedy it. There was some discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Albuera Street Primary School Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tasmania about different notability guidelines for Secondary Schools, for instance in WA. I would probably support deletion at this stage but there is at least some hope it could meet notability guidelines with a bit of work. --Mattinbgn/ talk 12:38, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On another note, what do we do with this - Montagu Bay Primary School --Mattinbgn/ talk 12:39, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it is the standard (albeit unreferenced) that primary school article should meet. I personally would remove some the puffery about sports grounds and school houses that are common to all schools and some of the POV but I am not overly fussed by it. Incidentally, the speedy tag has been taken from Ouse District High School if you are considering nominating it for AfD--Mattinbgn/ talk 23:41, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Montagu Bay Primary School

[edit]

I saw your comments about my lack of referencing on User talk:Mattinbgn. I started out writing a lot of my articles, such as this one, based upon common knowledge. For example, most of the stuff I wrote about MBPS, I know because I went there! However, I realise wiki is trying to maintain a high standard of reliability, so I have been attempting to imporve my sourcing for my more recent posts. I have a couple of ongoing pages I am trying to imporve, but when I have done those, I intend to go back and try and find better sourcing for some of the previous ones I have done to a lesser standard.Rac fleming 06:48, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I realised they weren't personal comments, that's fine. I agree with your comments as well. I have a degree in history, so I realise the need for proper academic citation, and will try to upgrade all my previous articles in the near future.Rac fleming 08:59, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback. It's probably best without "The". I'd seen similar breakdowns in a few of the websites, and I used the dates from the National Museum of Australia pdf. I'll make the change. --Steve (Stephen) talk 05:48, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Garrie. I have removed the prod from the Jane Thurgood-Dove article. Please see User talk:Longhair#Jane Thurgood-Dove and User talk:Mattinbgn#Jane Thurgood-Dove for details. If you wish it can be listed with AfD. Cheers, Mattinbgn/ talk 04:07, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have no intentions of touching the article any further than the tags I put on earlier. I was intending to place a prod tag on myself earlier but decided I should ask someone who is part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian crime for their opinion. The advice given back to me, as you saw, was that it could be considered notable. I didn't nominate the article myself for AfD as I accepted Longhair's rationale. When I saw your tag, I removed it as it is likely that deletion would have some level of opposition, although I am indifferent about its existence myself. Therefore, it should probably go to AfD if you still wish to have it deleted. I have no idea about any of the facts of the case but the article needs work urgently and has been tagged as such. -- Mattinbgn/ talk 04:44, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The article as it stands is rubbish and is better off deleted than to remain. I do plan to give the topic a look into one day down the track. I'm just a little busy offline these days to give it the time it deserves. The current article isn't much to begin with, so I wouldn't lose any sleep if it were deleted. -- Longhair\talk 10:24, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You asked for more verifiable references on this article, here are two i plucked from the pool:

  • "The Public Schools Association of Western Australia as an Exclusive Sporting Body" (Carter, 1977)
  • [7]
I think the first one just seals it. There is also a publication by Scotch College on it. Twenty Years 08:24, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Before I prod this article. Do you want to save it by adding some independent citations to it to say why it's important independently of UNE?Garrie 05:37, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice. Can't say it'd be a huge loss, but there are articles for several of UNE's other residential colleges and articles about residential colleges at other universities aren't all that uncommon. See Australian National University and Sydney University for instance. Gimboid13 08:43, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You have said that being a TV presenter doesn't make you a notable person, only award winning journalists are notable. Then can you please remove the page for Jessica Rowe, as by your standards, even though she is a presenter on a national morning show, she hasn't won any awards or done anything sepcial, so doesn't count for a page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SA TV (talkcontribs) 20:39, 26 April 2007

I am amazed that Ali Osman really needed disambiguation. Could you have tried a bit harder to come up with a POV name for the article? Nothing in the article suggests he is a career criminal, regardless of your inflamatory edit summary.Garrie 09:40, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I did so maliciously. I simply noted that people are first and foremost dabbed by what their occupation is (in the sense of making them notable), and not birth factors like race and caste, and in this case he was notable for being taken to court. Presenters

[edit]

Hi there; I would take the view, which I suspect you share, that a TV presenter has to have some characteristic, activity, publication, etc which confers notability. I have absolutely no idea how many past and present TV presenters exist, but given the number of TV stations broadcasting the number must easily be in four figures. Possibly five. They cannot all be notable, and I am personally happy for you to continue tagging if notability is not asserted. --Anthony.bradbury 13:53, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't Wikipedia have the potential to be endless, it's not like it's wasting paper, so why is there such a problem with having pages showing information about a minor celebrity. I think if you are a person who has risen through the ranks of broadcaster to become an anchor, you have displayed a number of characteristic which, in the eys of most normal Australians, would deem you to be a notable person. This isnt America where every state has hundreds of on-air talent, there are only really the 3 networks in 5 cities with maybe 6 or 7 notable pepople each! I really don't see why you people arte turning you anger towards someone who is meerly a humble reporter who has deleveloped a small fan base because of her contined contribution to the Ten network in Melbourne. Garrie, a bit of advice if you've got a moment. I've just replaced a paragraph with new text in the article Utopia, Norhtern Territory, "ongoing challenges", which was removed by someone who objected to it. I copied the text from my sandbox, pasted it into the editing page, and it appears as a line of type inside a box of broken line. I can't find how to fix this. What's going on? Do you normally work up stuff in the sandbox and get it to the article by copy & paste, or something else? I'm planning on doing some work on it (amongst other articles...), so what I'll do is contact you if/when I move it back into mainspace, and you can decide if there's any further action that needs to be taken. Actually he's old IRA not Provisional IRA or any other modern incarnation. Any coverage of him is likely to be in books covering the Easter Rising and beyond, so it's generally neutral anyway. I'm not entirely convinced he exists anyway, as barring the site I can't find any other online coverage which is strange, so I'm not ruling out some elaborate hoax yet. She may yet become notable so I think the deletion should not be salted. Just keep watching for recreation. I think SATV and Splashmo are socks of each other given the exact duplication of the words each time the article was recreated, notwithstanding the comments made at Sarah's talk page - not disallowed but curious. I can't see otherwise, unless it is a copyright violation, how one could come up with the exact same of words - deleted edits aren't viewable as far as I know to non-admins. There seems to be no other source of these exact same words in the web though. I am also somewhat suspicious of the motives of proposing and defending such a non-notable biography.--Golden Wattle talk 00:28, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
