Wall Street Journal

Hi. The Wall Street Journal is effectively subscriber-only. Get some 'free' articles but not for a month like other media, it's for a much longer time. Haven't been able to read WSJ since late August. Don't have idea when (or if, unlikely) they'll let me in again. Anyway, added second reference to Turkey story. List of California wildfires & Bluecut Fire

Heyo! Thanks for adding the Bluecut Fire to the list. I made one change to your addition. I trimmed down the notes dramatically. While I do feel that what you added is of great significance, I feel strongly that it belongs on the article page for the fire itself, not in the notes field. At the moment a "unknown number of structures have been destroyed" according to InciWeb. Once they (or someone else) release good solid number, that should absolutely be included in the table. But specific structures I don't think should go in the list. Otherwise that table is going to blow up! Does that make sense? Let me know your thoughts. I must say that I am disappointed that you just ignored my request for some sort of explanation and instead just carried on editing. I spent half an hour finding and removing your copy pasting. No "I'm sorry". No "Thanks for cleaning up my blatant copyvios". Nothing. Did you even review your own contribs to see if I missed anything?

Hi there, Anna. I apologize for the lack of response, I would of done this earlier but I had family things going.
As for my copyright violations. Yes, I can see how I definitely should of checked before hand before making those edits. Especially the one on 2016 clown sightings. As you can see by my contribs, I went back and put up the same story, but this time without the violations. As for my edits in general, I believe my copyright violations are only on some particular articles I have created and edited on, such as the ones you highlighted. My edits on Portal:Current events (going back to 2014) are usually quite brief. I've checked through the last couple of months and I haven't seen any obvious copyright violations.

I've now looked through more contribs and I can't see any. I honestly didn't realize I was doing it. I thought you were allowed to copy-paste the odd sentence from a news article. My bad. Yes, it was clearly a case of double entry but you removed the former entry, not the latter made by Capitalistroadster, which included far less details of the incident than the previous entry made by myself. Clearly Capitalistroadster failed to notice it was already included, it happens, I've done it before a few times, and you didn't bother to look at the portal's history to see which one was included first. Invitation to WikiProject Portals

The Portals WikiProject has been rebooted.

You are invited to join, and participate in the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system and all the portals in it.

There are sections on the WikiProject page dedicated to tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too), and areas on the talk page for discussing the improvement and automation of the various features of portals.

Many complaints have been lodged in the RfC to delete all portals, pointing out their various problems. They say that many portals are not maintained, or have fallen out of date, are useless, etc. Many of the !votes indicate that the editors who posted them simply don't believe in the potential of portals anymore.

It's time to change all that. Let's give them reasons to believe in portals, by revitalizing them.

The best response to a deletion nomination is to fix the page that was nominated. The further underway the effort is to improve portals by the time the RfC has run its course, the more of the reasons against portals will no longer apply. RfCs typically run 30 days. There are 19 days left in this one. Let's see how many portals we can update and improve before the RfC is closed, and beyond.

A healthy WikiProject dedicated to supporting and maintaining portals may be the strongest argument of all not to delete.

We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.

Let's do this.

The RfC discussion to eliminate portals was closed May 12, with the statement "There exists a strong consensus against deleting or even deprecating portals at this time." This was made possible because you and others came to the rescue. Thank you for speaking up.

By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Toward that end, we have been working diligently to innovate portals, while building, updating, upgrading, and maintaining them. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.

Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. Please feel free to join in on any of the many threads of development at the WikiProject's talk page, or just stop by to see how we are doing. If you have any questions about portals or portal development, that is the best place to ask them.

Hello. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Current events format is currently being updated. However, one new change is a section for "Current discussions". The Portal:Current events has debates all the time to determine if things are notable for the portal (international news) or if they are better suited for a place like 2020 in the United States. In the past, small 'edit wars' have taken place between editors over topics. This new section on the WikiProject is a new place where editors can discuss between each other and have an easy access to 'outside opinion' from other participates. Members in the Current Event WikiProject are welcome to invite other editors that have disagreements to start the discussion on the WikiProject. (Unlike RFC's, discussions about topics would be about 1 week or whenever the topic is no longer relevant from the WikiProject).

Before entering into a possible avoidable dispute, I will give you my opinion about the latest editions in Current Events and see what we can do. I understand that the importance of the post-Trump cabinet of the United States is recognized and everyone has followed the nominations. But is it really necessary that every confirmation has to be posted? I could come to understand Lloyd Austin's, and even Deb Haaland's, but personally I don't think this is the place to post something that implies that it looks more like a timeline of the early days of the Biden presidency. And the same is my opinion about the Trump edits, but at the time he was not very active. Good evening, Alsoriano97. Firstly, I appreciate you leaving this message for me rather than just reverting me for another pointless edit war, so thanks for that. Regarding the confirmations of Biden's cabinet picks, I would say, and this is based on the fact most if not all of Trump's cabinet picks were covered on the portal, and the fact the confirmations often gain international coverage, for example the Lloyd Austin confirmation which you removed, was covered by the The Guardian, it has also been covered by the Financial Times and Al Jazeera. Again, clearly notable. I would of course draw the line at senior cabinet members, lower level administration officials would be definitely pushing it in terms of notability. It is very unlikely that the green explosion observed over Kyiv was the satellite, and we should probably wait for more reliable reports. New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
