On the skull of Archaeopteryx

Hi "FunkMonk". I have seen you deleted my diagram of the skull of Archaeopteryx from the Archaeopteryx article on 11/1, and want to discuss this with you:

First of all, the teeth. They are based on this skull, in which I think the teeth looks "relatively" large.

Second, the skull of Archaeopteryx: I thougth they were very well preserved in the Berlin specimen and Eichstätt specimen? Also, the shape and arrangement of the bones in the skull are based on a picture from The Princeton Fieldguide to Dinosaurs by Gregory Scott Paul. Isn't he a trustworthy scientist (at least when it comes to dinosaurs and mesozoic birds)? Thank you for reading this advise/ Conty 22:30, 11 January 2011 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Conty (talkcontribs)

Yes, I used exactly Greg Paul's skeletal when I compared, and they don't add up, every bone and fenestra has a very different shape, and the teeth are much much smaller. And yes, some specimens are "well" preserved, but that does not mean that we have three dimensionally preserved skulls that we can turn around and look at from every angle, so even GSP's skeletal is guesswork, but if you had used his skeletal as sole reference, I think the image would had been accurate. But that strange "skull" you showed a picture of, it is inaccurate and shouldn't be used as reference it's just a crude sculpt, no such skull really exists. As an example, see here, I took Scott Hartman's skeletal of Archaeopteryx[1] (which matches GSP's) and placed the new drawing next to it, they don't add up. http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/8900/archaeopteryxg.jpg FunkMonk (talk) 00:39, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
I thought my restoration was good... I looked at different skulls of Archaeopteryx, and it might could have been different specimens. But I tried to do an accurate work. Conty 14:40, 14 january 2011
It isn't too far off, I'm sure you can make it accurate enough if you just use published skeletals as reference and the actual fossils, sculpts are never too reliable, especially when they are made after skeletal elements that are crushed, like all Archaeopteryx skulls are. By the way, you are Swedish, right? Forstår du dansk? FunkMonk (talk) 00:26, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I actually do (to some degree...), so it's not a problem to me to understand. Conty 20:58, 17 January 2011

Lower resolution on images

I don't know why the images are reduced in size when I work with them (I don't do it...). Conty 14:40, 14 january 2011 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Conty (talkcontribs)

What programme do you use? FunkMonk (talk) 15:57, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
I use Adobe Photoshop CS3 Conty 20:56, 17 January 2011

Yes I guess you have to pay for them. From what I gather, he wasn't able to make much money out of the sales and did not get the return of his investment in time and effort. Ah, Visionholder asked you too? Mine is I think also based on edwardsi and had currently some feet and hand problems that I am about to fix. Mammal

Excellent job on the new picture for mammals - it had long bothered me and you chose a great selection. μηδείς (talk) 17:53, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, yeah, it was kind of strange, but then I looked on Commons and found the new image which has been used in other language Wikis before. FunkMonk (talk) 11:28, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

I'd be interested in your comments on the images here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Medeis#Animal which I am gathering to create a better collage for the article Animal. The current image for the article has two mammals yet no invertebrates besides a mollusc and two arthropods.

I would be especially interested in your suggestion as to which vertebrates of the ones I have assembled to pick, and which bird, if any. Or to know if you suggest any other images.

μηδείς (talk) 16:34, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Oh, I'll take a look. FunkMonk (talk) 18:25, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
Hi. Here are small versions of the images I created for mammal animal and bird shortly after my last note to you (μηδείς (talk) 03:44, 2 March 2011 (UTC)):

I think they're cool, love the Brezhnev/Nixon image, hahah, so arbitrary! But maybe you could find an image of a pangolin without a human hand in it? FunkMonk (talk) 03:48, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Ceratopsian hands

Hi, I was glad to see you updating the ceratopsian images that I removed a few months earlier for the inaccurate hands! I've been rereading Fujiwara's Triceratops paper, and it turns out that another issue with most of them is that the fourth and fifth fingers shouldn't be touching the ground (as in the updated Triceratops image or Tamura's newer ceratopsians). Incidentally, the Montanoceratops image is still inaccurate in that the nose horn has since been found to be a misplaced cheek horn. Also, I'm thinking that the ankylosaur hands might need to be even more sauropod like, per Senter's 2010 paper. Albertonykus (talk) 12:40, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

File:Journal.pone.0012292.g008.jpg
Ah, thanks for the info, I'll take a look, and just notify me whenever you discover an inaccurate image, then I'll see if I can salvage it. By the way, could you send me a copy of that paper? Could be nice to use as ref. As you say, the outer digits do not seem to touch the ground on these skeletals from last year, but I'm unsure how it would look when just standing? At least one of them seems to touch the ground on the Pentaceratops skeletal. FunkMonk (talk) 18:10, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
Sent it through the e-mail function. Hope it gets through. Albertonykus (talk) 03:38, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll give it a read! FunkMonk (talk) 03:43, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Request For Help In An Edit War

I hate to trouble you, but would it be possible if I can get your help in stopping an edit war between Raptor Red, myself and some other users at Walking With Dinosaurs? Raptor Red's edits are original research and speculation made in order to imply that the Walking With series is factual correct under all circumstances. He also does not reference his edits, beyond mentioning that "it's true," or that it's said so in the book, or claiming that it "isn't original research," or referring to some dubious source like another wikia or the talkforum of a defunct fanpage. question about images

The file I uploaded at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Giant_ant_fossil.jpg is now up for deletion. You had a tag saying it was moved to wikicommons, but the link you had there was a dead end. Was it moved over and named something else? All the articles about this new discovery have two pictures of a hummingbird next to the ant fossil. You uploaded the other one to wikicommon and then linked to it from the article I created, replacing my original image. Titanomyrma I think my image is better, since the hummingbird is more colorful. Is there a place where the owner specifically says he is releasing both the images to the public domain? Dream Focus 02:28, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

The image that was moved to Commons was deleted because it didn't have sufficient permission. You should take a look at this: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS FunkMonk (talk) 07:13, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

John Day Fossil Beds image

Hi FunkMonk. I've been working hard to get John Day Fossil Beds National Monument up to FA status. It's recently been through a complex peer review, and I'm planning on nominating the article at FAC late next week. The image that you added today sandwiches text between two images, which the Manual of Style advises against. WP:MOSIM says in part, "Avoid sandwiching text between two images that face each other, or between an image and an infobox." In addition, the image is low-res, whereas I've been adding high-res images throughout the article. Readers can get a fair idea of what some of these critters looked like by clicking through to articles about them. I'm writing to you rather than simply reverting, because I don't want you to think I'm hostile or thoughtless. I recently reverted a similar image you added to Petrified Forest National Park on the same grounds, but I only explained my reasoning in my edit summary. Do you mind if I remove the extinct fossil image? Finetooth (talk) 01:23, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Heh, no problem, just thought it might be relevant. I tried to find a larger version, since the one we have really isn't adequate I agree. FunkMonk (talk) 01:25, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Much appreciated. Finetooth (talk) 01:27, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

List of extinct genera in Jurassic Park

Hey, I thought I should explain why I decided to change the format of the List of extinct genera in Jurassic Park page. First of all, when I first stumbled onto the page, I found it extremely awkward because the explanation part of the table was not only far to the right, but squeezed into a small box. Second, you explained that you reverted because the previous style "show clearly show which film each genus appears in", but I disagree. When I first was reading through the article, I found that when I was halfway down the page, all I saw was a bunch of X's and checks. It didn't really help me see which one each dinosaur is in.

Additionally, although this is a list-style article, it doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be represented via table (See List of Scream characters, a GA nominee that has a different approach to addressing objects over several different movies)

I was trying to find a style that solved these problems. If you have another idea, let me know, but I think it needs to be be changed somehow, if not that particular way, to address these issues.

Sesamehoneytart 15:56, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

There are probably many ways to do it, but how else would you give an as easy and straightforward overview to what movies each genus appears in?
My point was that the title is "List of genera", not "list of movies genera are in". I took that to mean that the article should focus on the genera themselves, not necessarily what movies they are in. While the movies they are in should be included, how they look and act through media, how they affect the storyline, and factual background about each genera are just as important. Sesamehoneytart 13:49, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
Alright, if you can improve the article, I won't hold you back. FunkMonk (talk) 07:51, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Emu

Hello, I looked over the Emu article and it seems that the reasons it was demoted from FA status are no longer valid. Do you think it should be nominated again? LittleJerry (talk) 21:20, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't have much experience with that kind of stuff though, you think you can do it? FunkMonk (talk) 22:03, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
I can't, I nominated an article a week ago and have to wait another week. LittleJerry (talk) 22:11, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
If I re-nominated it, would you be able to respond to any possible challenge they may bring up? LittleJerry (talk) 05:18, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

I did some of Caliber's requests and someone else cited the cultural section. I went ahead and nominateed it for FA. LittleJerry (talk) 17:34, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Additions to the Palestinian Infobox

Hey Funkmonk, been a while, I found some new free use images to Add into the Palestinian Infobox and was wondering if you could help add them into the collage. :)

Sumaya Farhat Naser http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sumaya_Farhat-Naser_-_litCologne_2008_%280774%29.jpg

Mustafa Barghouthi http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mustafa_barghouthi.jpg

Another I found and thought we could use is Saint George, considering he is a Historical Palestinian, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:35_St_George_on_Foot.jpg

I found a picture of Edward Said as an adult that we could use possibly instead of the picture of him as a child, http://www.flickr.com/photos/26585693@N05/2540741362/sizes/m/in/photostream/

Also I found a better and clearer picture of Queen Rania of Jordan, http://www.flickr.com/photos/worldeconomicforum/374716729/sizes/m/in/photostream/

Lazyfoxx (talk) 07:32, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Here's a collage I made of the Images to save you some time, I think Saint George should be put before Tawfik Canaan so that the images seem to go down in historical order. http://i44.tinypic.com/2py9a1v.jpg Lazyfoxx (talk) 08:42, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi, nice, maybe also post this to the Palestinian talk page? Best to discuss this sort of thing with more people. I personally think too many people downgrades the impact, compare the Jew page with the Sephardic Jew page, for example. I much prefer the look of the former. Hank Azaria in the same league as Maimonides, really? FunkMonk (talk) 09:43, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Yeah I really think the infobox for example on pages such as the Lebanese people, provides a wide variety of the Lebanese as a whole, that is what I'm attempting to convey as well on the Palestinian page, with more notable people one can get a better picture of who Palestinians are as a whole, as well as see a variety of appearances within the country, it gives a better representative of the population. With only a few people in the infobox it also appears to give an illusion that there are very few notable people as a whole as to fill the box. I was wondering if you could fix the images into a collage like you did with the first set, I attempted and it didn't come out very well so I thought I'd ask you, you seem to be pretty good at this. :) Lazyfoxx (talk) 05:45, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

When you have time of course :) Lazyfoxx (talk) 02:25, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Of course, I still think you should start a topic about this on the Palestinians page. I think maybe a extra row would suffice. FunkMonk (talk) 00:16, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Alrighty I made a discussion topic on the page, and I also came up with this revised Infobox, I think it looks good for now? I'll need your help posting it on the page, I'm not sure how to?

I've attempted to add the new collage I created into the commons and to cite the copyright or lack there of information for each picture that allows us to use the photos, but I had difficulty and was unable to figure out how to do it, hopefully you can help me with this. :) Lazyfoxx (talk) 23:45, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hi, could you please provide alternative media before tagging much needed images for deletion? Media enrich our articles and make them more enjoyable. thanks Eli+ 17:49, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi, well, that's not how it works, a copyright violation has to go whether there are alternatives or not. I'm an administrator on Wikimedia Commons, so I cannot let images with dubious copyright info stay even if I want to. A alternative could simply be to find a good non-free image and upload it as fair use. But I will see if there are any free equivalents. There are some here that look like they could be the right age for public domain, but there is no info about them: olm.org.lb/en/Component/Saints/MarMaroun.asp That's the problem with most St. Maroun images on the web, they're just on the resective webpages without any captions. Update on my lemur work

Sorry for not keeping you in the loop, but I've been taking a break from Wiki for a little while. However, I'm now back, but tied up in several large projects. The Koala lemur article is still very high on my priority list, and I hope to work on it sometime this winter or spring. I just wanted you to know that I haven't forgotten about it. I can't wait to make full use of your fine art. – VisionHolder « talk » 06:58, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Sounds good! I'd love to sign up for more lemur illustrations, but I have exams the upcoming weeks and will be quite busy for some time. But I don't think we'll run out of species to illustrate just yet. FunkMonk (talk) 07:44, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
At this point, it looks like Smokeybjb may be helping us this weekend with Pachylemur, and I have also asked him to do the giant aye-aye since I will probably be working on aye-ayes immediately after Ucucha and I write the Pachylemur article. If he interested and has time, that will leave only one genus of subfossil lemur without life restorations: Mesopropithecus (already a Featured Article). After that, more illustrations showing these lemurs in various natural poses or close-up illustrations of specific parts of their anatomy would be ideal. If any of this interests you, please drop at note on my talk page close to a time at which you'll be free. FYI: I am seriously thinking about making a hard push to re-write and promote all the subfossil lemur articles early this year. – VisionHolder « talk » 21:31, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Yup, I was also thinking of individual species in each genus needing restorations, for example the three species of Megaladapis, so far only one is restored, same with Palaeopropithecus, and probably more. FunkMonk (talk) 22:11, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, we could do individual species, but from what I understand the differences can be slight. In fact, there have often been debates over whether the species should be synonymized. Also, a lot of the differences appear to be mostly in size, as well as slight differences in teeth or ridges on bone. Aside from giving an artist more liberty to play with fur type/color and coloration patterns, I'm not sure how "new" these other species would be. But that can be discussed with an expert, like Dr. Godfrey. At this point, I'm not even sure if the individual species will get their own Wiki article due to the lack of appreciable differences and research on them. – VisionHolder « talk » 22:19, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't think articles should be split either, but if a restoration of another species (which is regarded as valid by most sources) is needed at some point, I'd be happy to do one. FunkMonk (talk) 22:21, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Interview?

My apologies for the non-personalized note; I've got several people to contact here. We're looking for administrators who would be willing to be interviewed by students as a part of Wikipedia's WP:United States Education Program. Dr. Jonathan Obar is teaching the course, and it's a study in how Wikipedia is governed and how administrators are selected. If you're not interested, you may either ignore this invitation or remove your name from the list of admins we've contacted. Thanks, Bob the WikipediaN (talkcontribs) 20:03, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, but I'm not an admin! FunkMonk (talk) 17:02, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear FunkMonk, (your name was posted HERE by another admin).

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 17:58, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

hi funk

I may get banned on here soon, just want to say it was a pleasure meeting you, I hope you continue to improve articles such as the Lebanese and the Palestinians, there seems to be a subtle high pro-israeli agenda among many of the editors on these pages and they seem to always win their "arguments" due to sheer numbers, I have noticed, it's quite sad. Anyways, I hope you continue to work on improving the Palestinian infobox if my version gets removed again "due to Saint George and Jesus being included in them" Perhaps if I get banned you could make a new version including the other 15 people I included in the infobox, seeing as I won't be able to if I get banned.

best of luck to you in the future, Lazyfoxx (talk) 05:22, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Heheh, thanks, and you won't get banned if you work slowly and by the rules. I've been blocked twice in the past, I'm still here. I just learned how to work properly on Wikipedia. FunkMonk (talk) 08:58, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Ibn Taymiyya

I believe, then, that his article should be corrected as referring to him as "Sunni" without citing disagreement over this is indeed a victory for the group commonly referred to as "Salafis" (Who consider Ibn Taymiyya to be a guided scholar while ortodox Muslims do not).

I will correct it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GMP Saifi (talkcontribs) 09:44, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Passenger pigeon

I put the quotes into your talk page and then deleted them. You can find them in your history. I don't want the copyright violation robots to get their panties in a bunch. So to speak. If you need more, let me know. I can be reached via e-mail, and if you provide them I can do this with any of those sources and send it to you as a file. 7&6=thirteen () 19:59, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! As I mentioned on the pigeon's talk page, we are legally able to use any of the quotes we want, and if a copyright bot reacts, we should be able request that those quotes become exceptions. I think that happened with the "country studies" sites, which are also public domain. FunkMonk (talk) 20:02, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Scipionyx

Hallo, FunkMonk! As you have noticed, I'm expanding the Scipionyx article. Earlier, on the Dutch Wikipedia I wrote a very long article, with the embarrassing result I ran out of images. Obviously we do have a few excellent pictures, in high resolution, of the one known fossil but we are still lacking some close-ups: one of the dentition, which could be obtained from File:9120 - Milano, Museo storia naturale - Scipionyx samniticus - Foto Giovanni Dall'Orto 22-Apr-2007.jpg, and one of the digestive tract from the elbows down to and including the tail base (the track extends far beyond the pelvis centre), for which File:9121 - Milano, Museo storia naturale - Scipionyx samniticus - Foto Giovanni Dall'Orto 22-Apr-2007a.jpg could be used. I'd do it myself if I weren't a total twit in these things, the latter sad fact making me wonder whether you could find the time to help me out. Again.

On a related issue, I noticed that this interesting article: Frey, E. & Tischlinger, H., 2012, The Late Jurassic Pterosaur Rhamphorhynchus, a Frequent Victim of the Ganoid Fish Aspidorhynchus? PLoS ONE 7(3): e31945. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0031945, has some very nice and basically copyright-free images. Just a hint ;o).

Greetings, --MWAK (talk) 14:28, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Yup, I could do that easily, maybe we should also have a coloured diagram of the intestines drawn on a photo or something, if we can base it on something similar in the newest Scipionyx paper? And we already have at least one image from the Rhamphorhynchus paper up, don't know id you've seen it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rhamphorhynchus_and_Aspidorhynchus.png FunkMonk (talk) 23:47, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much! Indeed the 2011 study contains a series of three fold-outs, one of them a detailed diagram of the soft tissues. I'll try to create a simpler version. I completely missed the Rhamphorhynchus image :oS.--MWAK (talk) 06:28, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Concerning the Automatic Taxobox

How do you get the automatic taxobox to display a family? I want to mention in the taxobox that Bohaskaia is in Monodontidae, but, I'm hesitant to do so for fear of screwing it up.--Mr Fink (talk) 02:37, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Merge, not purge

FunkMonk, although you were right that a synonym of Tanystropheus does not merit its own page, your solution was a little crude. By simply blanking out the content of Procerosaurus and replacing it with a redirect, you lost some useful information that could be added to the target page. The correct procedure is a merge. See Help:Merging for how to do this. You can also look at my recent edits of the two articles and their talk pages. RockMagnetist (talk) 04:17, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
