End dates

We simply note the last time a player appeared for their country. Once they make another appearance then the infobox can be updated to show that they played in 2022. It's not our job to predict if a player is going to make another international appearance, we report facts. There's too much pushing content into infoboxes across this project without references rather than adding referenced prose in the main content. Nthep (talk) 14:01, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

It's definitely not our job to state a player has retired, that would be largely unreferenced, and could very easily see a wholesale change to what we do within WPRL. I'm not looking to upset the applecart, merely maintain the previous position that in and around tournament time we do not state to the outside world that a player has retired, as that is what we would actively be doing. We shoot ourselves in the foot as a sport, attempting to drive people away from the sport by intention or incompetence, but probably best that we don't do it in a RLWC tournament time. I personally don't agree with the closing out of years, can understand the references at WPRL allow us to have something solid to latch onto, but it seems churlish to remove the previous tournament time position and retire him, especially as we all know there is a date stamp to state when the stats are up to date to. If you want to retire the player the minute after elimination, it wouldn't seem logical to me, but post tournament the previously given leeway disappears and rugby league can again diverge from other sports.Fleets (talk) 14:08, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

Who is equating end date with retirement? I'm not, I'm simply stating a fact as to when a player last played for their national team. Your position appears to me to be that once a player is tagged with a representative appearance then representation remains open-ended until they announce that their international career is over?

Take Agoro, for example, that reads to me that between 2015 and 2021 he has made a number of appearances for Jamaica - not that he has made his final appearance for Jamaica, just that the most recent was 2021. Ideally we should adding prose to the article to say that he has been named in the Jamaica squad for the World Cup, then, if and when he makes an appearance this year the most recent appearance is updated in the infobox to 2022.

This is what I mean by I think there is too much quick updating without sources or supporting text. It's just too prevalent across this project that people want to put figures in infoboxes without remembering that infoboxes should summarise the article content and are not a substitute for the article content. A related example - Richie Myler, you've updated the flag in the Rhinos squad navbox to say Ireland which correctly reflects his declaration (not that I agree with flags in squad navboxes anyway but that's beside the point here) but the article on Myler lacks anything to explain why the navbox is now correct and that he has declared an willingness to play for Ireland and how he is qualified to do so. Navbox order

You recently reverted my edit to Gareth Widdop based on MOS, but I do not know where in the MOS guidelines it states the order in which these navboxes should appear. I could not identify any particular reason behind the existing order so I changed it because to me it made sense that the Melbourne navboxes could be placed together, but if this was incorrect it would be useful to know why to improve my future edits. Yeah I'm on board with that, added a few in. The festival of world cups is the terminology for the umbrella tournament name, until the actual day of the current tournament. The 2025 version will be built up over time.Fleets (talk) 14:05, 31 October 2022 (UTC)

It simply looks terrible, disrupts the flow, removes peoples innate curiosity through wikilinks and treats the reader like they should be on simple English wikipedia. It is a non-enforced rule across a multitude of other abbreviations, such as NASA, BBC, etc. I've tried engaging but the person involved has dragged me down. If you don't want me to remove the infobox, perhaps you should contribute to the discussion on the talk page and explain your position rather than edit-warring and using misleading edit summaries. My edits are not vandalism, I am editing to improve the encyclopaedia. The infobox does not improve the page and includes information that does not belong on the page. Why on earth would anyone looking for the tournament squads care about how many games each team won or lost? There is also a better way of displaying the coach/captain info, as I have demonstrated on the talk page, which you would know if you had contributed to the discussion. You've had three, almost four days to reply, and yet instead you've just decided to carry on this childish attitude. The road you offered was ridiculous. There is already an infobox for rugby league tournaments, the one you've been editing is for tours such as 1911–12 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain, and there certainly shouldn't be an infobox on the squads page, at least not in the form you're proposing. I also offered an alternative... on the article talk page, which (I reiterate) you have ignored. It doesn't matter whether you "feel" an infobox is justified; per WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE, the current infobox is simply not fit for purpose. I've added the infobox to 1908–09 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain and 1911–12 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain to show its intended purpose. "present" for rep players

Seems to go against the grain of everywhere else, and seems a bit early when the sport actually has people interested in it as the World Cup is still going on. To the outside world we are advertising that the players have retired, with all of about 10 people reading the guide for the infobox. I see they've retired from international rugby league (to everyone but WPRL), and unfortunately it appears that other sports see international representation as continuous, and not in the way that club sport is contractual, and that your time at a club starts and concludes in line with the contract. Again, the World Cup is not over, we are going against the grain, I thought there was tacit agreement to wait until the end of the competition before we went the other way. I really don't see an issue in waiting a week, but if you feel harmed, then I apologise to you. My only concern is that the sport is best publicised to the widest audience, and portray it in the best possible way, and in this instance in line with all other sports. 2025 Rugby League World Cup

Why have you reverted my edits regarding the 2025 Rugby League World Cup. Editors HAVE NOT spent time during the 2021 Rugby League World Cup agreeing a new format for these tournaments for it to be ignored for future editions of the competition. The Rugby League World Cup has confirmed four major tournament for 2025 therefore they should be treated as equal as have the three major tournaments of 2021. I don't think there were any of the core WPRL editors that did agree with the 2021 format, much the opposite. They are fundamentally unequal tournaments, and the 2021 move was forced through whilst multiple editors were on the way to the opening game of the 2021 RLWC. You would need to seek consensus to move away from the norm, not see the aberration as the rule. Build consensus to overrule, otherwise please go and shout at Gary Lineker for daring to say Canada have scored their first goal in the World Cup.Fleets (talk) 12:33, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
