Upgrading the links to references in the Infobox source field…
[edit]Hi Fleets, I notice that you're upgrading the links to references in the Infobox source field. I believe I may be able to assist with this using the AutoWikiBrowser. Best regards DynamoDegsy (talk) 09:31, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
- Hi DynanoDegsy. Yeah I've been doing that, and I don't know too much about AWB. Will have to look into it. Thanks.Fleets (talk) 19:37, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
- Having said that, it appears that a large number of articles have the format… |source = [http://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/players/all.html rugbyleagueproject.org], so sadly it's not possible to create a player specific reference from that external link using AutoWikiBrowser.
- If the external link had been in the format… |source = [http://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/players/john-smith/summary.html rugbyleagueproject.org], then it would have been possible to use AutoWikiBrowser to create a proper reference from the external link.
- Best regards. DynamoDegsy (talk)
- Oh well, some you win, some you lose. Manual isn't often the way forwards, but is often the only way available to us. Cheers all the same.Fleets (talk) 19:44, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
englandrl.co.uk website doesn't show the Great Britain player statistics unless they also played for England…
[edit]Hi Fleets, sadly the englandrl.co.uk website doesn't show the Great Britain player statistics unless they also played for England. Hence for Kevin Ashcroft, et al, http://www.englandrl.co.uk/player_records?search=Ashcroft&submit=Go&c=GB shows either nothing, or the statistics of other players with that suranme, in this case Ernest Ashcroft. Years ago, I was told by someone at englandrl.co.uk that this would be remedied… it still hasn't been done, so rather than us them as references, I've placed them in the 'External links' section, in the hope that someday they will be updated. Best regards DynamoDegsy (talk) 10:56, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- I thought they did, as I remember clicking on links as seeing the stats. As you say it appears to be English GB players only. Was trying to get the stats to have some sort of reference, but England is looking after little old England only. Cheers for the info.Fleets (talk) 10:58, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- Was it just non-England players that were affected by the non-transfer of stats or is this symptomatic of a wider issue?Fleets (talk) 19:43, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- As far as I'm aware the statistics on englandrl.co.uk GB are shown only if the player also played for England. Back in the noughties, I initially noticed that the Welsh GB players were not shown in the GB statistics, but then I noticed that English players that hadn't played for England, e.g. Alan Hardisty, were also missing from the GB statistics. As an aside, the englandrl.co.uk search only works for 4 or more characters… so bad news for Les Dyl, and Don Fox :-) Best regards DynamoDegsy (talk) 16:03, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. Seemed like there should be a central point of international stats for the Home Nations. It sounds like this was not it. Your info is very much appreciated though.Fleets (talk) 16:17, 11 February 2018 (UTC)

Height
[edit]Hi, I'm a little confused by your revert here. Per WP:UNITS, which you cite in your edit summary, for non-scientific articles not relating to the United States or the United Kingdom, "...the primary units chosen will be SI units". As the subject is Australian, it follows thatmetres should be the preferred primary unit. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 14:50, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- I reverted to the previous editor as it states that "In non-scientific articles relating to the United Kingdom, the primary units for most quantities are metric or other internationally used units,[i] except that; ... the primary units for personal height and weight are feet/inches and stones/pounds. I agreed with the previous editor that the above and linked applied as he plays in British football for a British club, and holds a British passport.Fleets (talk) 15:53, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Positional naming
[edit]Hi Fleets, with regard to positional naming, in the spirit of international harmony, in the rugby league player biographies, I've generally utilised both the British, and the Southern Hemisphere positional naming, e.g. Stand-off/Five-eighth, Scrum-half/Halfback, and Loose forward/Lock, reversing the positional names if the player is from the Southern Hemisphere. Though I have to admit, I do find the use of Halfback in the Southern Hemisphere confusing, as in my mind, Halfback could be either; Stand-off, or Scrum-half. In the case of, e.g. Shane Kenward, I believe he is probably Australian, and has played in both Australia and England, so should we use both Five-eighth/Stand-off, or Stand-off/Five-eighth, or just Five-eighth, or Stand-off? Best regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 10:27, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
- I think he is an Aussie. My position is in the infobox there is limited space, and given that they all link to the same space it's not necessary. I get the spirit, but to those who know it's redundant, and to those who don't it could be confusing. I get the why, the attempting to reach out and all, but I think in the infobox it's all a little too cluttered to have stand-off/five-eighth, scrum-half/half-back. It does get a little into ownership when Aussies are given Northern Hemisphere positions and vice-versa, but as a general rule I go for a what makes sense on a case-by-case basis ie if someone played a vast majority in a different hemisphere then go with that hemisphere.Fleets (talk) 22:01, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Fleets. Any reason for the three reverts? [1], [2], [3] Andygray110 (talk) 20:23, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

- Thanks for getting back to me chum. I'm not bothered just there was no summary so wasn't sure of the reason. Generally for players who are retired the dates for updates aren't often needed as their stats are unlikely to change. Terrific editing on the RL, you've done some great creating there. [edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Richard Beaumont (rugby league), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Gateshead Thunder (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

re-insertion and commenting out
[edit]I have removed those links as they do not belong in our articles per our policies and guidelines. Your edits to put them back commented out does not make any sense:
- they do not display, and there is no reason for them to be there, so that does not make any sense
- It now lacks the comment of why they are commented out
- It only invites to put them back by anyone interested
- We are not writing a database, that is what we have WikiData for.
- We are also not an internet directory to find the adidtional social networking sites - which no-one will see.
Please do not put them back - if you want it recorded, then they should be on WikiData. --Dirk Beetstra T C 19:19, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
And on your last revert - most of the websites were NOT of the subject of the page. Please have a good read through our external links guideline, and the many (recent) discussions regarding this on the talkpage there, and on the external links noticeboard. --Dirk Beetstra T C 19:42, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
working out a list
[edit]Lets take this list - I'll comment on each of them and point to the relevant parts of WP:EL:
- Official website - WP:ELOFFICIAL - this is the official website of the subject, controlled by the subject.
- Fleets/Archive 5 on Twitter - WP:ELMINOFFICIAL - WP:EL#10 - we link to only one official website (the one at the top), with only rare exceptions.
- Fleets/Archive 5 on Facebook - WP:ELMINOFFICIAL - WP:ELNO#10 - we link to only one official website (the one at the top), with only rare exceptions.
- Forever Reds (Salford Red Devils Supporters Trust) - fails WP:ELOFFICIAL - this is the website of the supporters trust, WP:ELNO#13, not directly connected (it is indirect).
- The Scarlet Turkey (independent fanzine) - fanzine, fails WP:ELOFFICIAL, see WP:FANSITE - subject of this link is the fanzine, not the Salford Red Devils, WP:ELNO#13
- Scarlet Turkey forum on rlfans.com - forum site, see again WP:ELNO#10. Also not controlled by the subject
- Super League website - website of the Super League, not of the Salford Red Devils, not controlled by the subject, see WP:ELNO#13
- Salford Red Devils Fans Forums – RugbyLeague.org - fan forum, not controlled by the subject, see WP:ELNO#10
- Photos of 1936–37 players - the subject of the page is the club, not the '36-'37 season or the players of that time. There is no reason to single out this year.
I hope this explains my edits a bit better. --Dirk Beetstra T C 20:04, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

North Sydney Bears logo
[edit]Hiya Fleets
Is it possible for someone to upload The North Sydney Bears logo back onto it's wikipedia page. Is there anyway we can get it back up?.

Rugby League Club Pages
[edit]Hi mate, sorry for the late reply as I just saw your message on my talk page. I made the edits to a few of the pages for certain rugby league clubs because they were including lower tier titles and cups in the top honours sections, where they really should not belong. I suppose this brings up what quantifies as an honour in the top section, but general consistency indicates it should be top tier titles and comps. Some of the info included also counted unofficial games, which definitely should not meet the criteria. Hence my changes of a few of the numbers. Davefelmer (talk) 04:51, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Unnecessary redirects
[edit]Hi Fleets, I'm unsure as to why have you (re)introduced redirects to e.g. Bill Pattinson/Darren Wright/Joe Bullock, e.g. this edit. If the county name is to be shown in the infobox (and I'm not sure that it should because long county names such as West Riding of Yorkshire cause ugly word-wrap, and the county name is (or should be) already in the body text), then I believe it should be e.g. [[Cumberland]], England, as nation states are not supposed to be linked, and this also doesn't introduce an unnecessary redirect. Best regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 17:40, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Ooh... as an aside, at the time of the birth of Darren Wright in 1968, the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and Greater Manchester didn't exist. I would have changed it (to just Lancashire), but I thought it better to wait until we'd addressed the above issue. Best regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 17:51, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Reintroducing an unnecessary redirect in the Josh Jones article... see above. DynamoDegsy (talk) 20:50, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry for the perceived slight on the Josh Jones article, I had queued it up before your edit and just wanted to get the infobox up to date and go and watch the live game.
- I'm not a historian and was attempting to be accurate with regards to Gr Manchester and MB of Wigan. If it was Lancs at the point of birth, then absolutely that is what should have gone there.
- Answering these in reverse. If you want to shorten them for aesthetics to West Riding of Yorkshire to West Yorkshire then I can get where you are coming from, but going from the project consensus of three to town linked and country not linked, would not be in line with a long-held consensus. I can understand where you are coming from with regards to multiple lines from extra words and larger conurbations being in there too, but I'm not sure you're solution is the right way to go.Fleets (talk) 06:47, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- I wouldn't shorten West Riding of Yorkshire to West Yorkshire, as these are two different counties (pre- and post-April 1 1974), with substantially different boundaries. According to the... Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking#What generally should not be linked major examples of locations should not be linked, this includes, e.g. Japan, Brazil, and by extension England, and I believe the Wikipedia:Manual of Style usurps any project consensus (should any exist). The use of e.g. [[Blackpool, Lancashire]] introduces an unnecessary redirect, and I believe it should be defined as; [[Blackpool]], [[Lancashire]], though as mentioned above to avoid ugly word-wrap in the infobox, I would only include the county in the body text and not the infobox. DynamoDegsy (talk) 12:50, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- Well I would look to bring that up at the project then because you would be looking to change a long-held consensus and would need to justify it, not to me, but there. Your link there is in relation to your removal of links to countries, and that is something else that could be said to have had both positive and negative effects. I for my part am not returning the links as numerous Australian IPs are doing, but attempting to make the link more justifiable and linked to the general MOS. I will though make sure that Blackpool and Lancashire are kept apart.Fleets (talk) 13:13, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- An unnecessary redirect is produced by this edit, it should be either; [[West Riding of Yorkshire]], [[England]], or as per the Wikipedia:Manual of Style; [[West Riding of Yorkshire]], England, though as I have mentioned above to avoid ugly word-wrap in the infobox, I would (did) omit the county. DynamoDegsy (talk) 12:44, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry I thought you had re-read the specific MOS, as there was nothing on the general one.Fleets (talk) 16:33, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you mean regarding "re-read the specific MOS"... [[West Riding of Yorkshire, England]] is not correct as it is a unnecessary redirect. DynamoDegsy (talk) 12:57, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons and Ottawa Stags
[edit]Hey mate I'm wondering if you could help out here. I recently tried uploading images for Kaiviti Silktails, Nigeria national rugby league team, Lithuania national rugby league team, Oliver Roberts, London 9s and also tried uploading one for Guy Armitage before the rest were deleted. I've made a flickr but not sure if I have the correct license? If you could add to those or have any suggestions for me to try to upload them it would be appreciated. Lastly the Ottawa Stags page although they've been approved as you know there's no official club name announced yet, unlike proposed clubs like the Silktails and the Montpellier Sharks. Should we keep the page until the logo and club name is released or until 2020/21 passes and there is still no Ottawa team? ThanksGetmefood (talk) 11:21, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi there, you need to make sure photos have the correct permissions, ie definitely not all rights reserved images for Guy Armitage, et al.Fleets (talk) 21:03, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
So definitely not screenshotted images off google images? which I've set the license on Flickr is Attribution-ShareAlike? hopefully I don't get into trouble for that otherwise I better off quit now. e.g. when I search on google images I would go tools > usage rights > instead of not filtered by license, I would instead go to labeled for reuse (and of course none of the images I'm searching for pops up! Ian Watson
[edit]Ian Watson (rugby league) was born in Salford, playing for Wales doesn't make him Welsh. DynamoDegsy (talk) 19:11, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
- Nor does being born in England, make him English. I thought this was settled a long time ago; not to have confused nationalities in the first sentence. A "blank" professional... does not indicate he is English, merely not to have two confusing positions in the opening statement. I did not state that he was Welsh, unless I've missed something with that edit. We stick to the facts, he played for Wales, he's an international for them. His lineage is covered in the background section, or at least it should be, if there are details to back up his family history and his birth in the City of Salford.Fleets (talk) 07:59, 24 August 2019 (UTC)
- I've been on here for over a decade, and to my knowledge this has never been "settled". He was born in England and has played and coached his entire career in England, being selected for Wales via the grandparent rule does not make him Welsh. His place of birth is referenced here. DynamoDegsy (talk)
- Well I'm confused, the article didn't say he was English or Welsh. I removed your addition for that reason. What can be agreed is that he played for Wales, which is covered in the opening statement or first few sentences. It would seem counter-intuitive to claim a nationality without a cited source, especially when it would fly against his playing nationality, with the potential to confuse any reader, decade or nil, being too high. Much better not to claim any nationality in this instance. Birth covered in two places in the article already, would seem quite emphatic to have it detailed three times in the first three sections; Infobox, opening statement and background. England, England, England.Fleets (talk) 07:30, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

Super League XXV
[edit]Hi, I created the page Super League XXV a few weeks ago, but saved it as a draft until closer to the start of the season as there are not enough references (I don't think anyway?) To publish it yet.
If you maybe want to have a look at it, and see if it meets the criteria to be published?

2020 RFL Championship moved to draftspace
[edit]An article you recently created, 2020 RFL Championship, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Lee mossop
[edit]Lee mission played for hensingham why remove what I put RDgooner (talk) 22:56, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
- Because that is the MOS, top three leagues in the UK only for those currently playing in the UK. Hensingham would be an amateur club and could easily be referred to in the body text. Please feel free to add it there, as it would add depth to the article.Fleets (talk) 07:51, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I'm just wondering why you think it's better if the caption is removed? I personally think it's useful to have the information. Geminin667 (talk) 17:36, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hello there. There wasn't one in place to begin with. My personal position is that it doesn't add anything of value, but were someone to be interested they could open up the picture and see the details that they want to find. I'm not saying everyone is being subjected to terrible things, just extraneous information that is a voluntary field. My olive branch was to place hover text that allows all users to see the information that you wanted, even trying to place more descriptive text. That would be my halfway point that is inoffensive between the two polar opposite positions.Fleets (talk) 21:30, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
