Very Special COTW, act now!
Greetings WikiProject Oregon peoples. It is once again time for another edition of the COTW. Thank you to those who helped eliminate some red links the last few weeks (the NWFP received little attention). This week, we have the stub High Desert Museum and then in honor of losing airline service again, McNary Field. Once again, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Aboutmovies (talk) 07:17, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Finetooth, thank you much for supporting me in my RfA. I've made plain my respect for your wok on WP, so the support meant much to me. I am expecting your support with my next FA nom, or I'll block you (kidding!) Kindest, Lazulilasher (talk) 23:38, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi Finetooth. If you are free, can you copy edit this article. It is currently in PR and I dont expect many changes. Thanks,Dineshkannambadi (talk) 23:52, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- No problem. Hope you come back kicking at some point. Please do a PR of this same topic if you have time.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 00:03, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Re Favor
The problem is there is no calibrated Washington map for the Geobox - see User_talk:VerruckteDan#Calibrated_Washington_map_for_Geobox_use_request. I have never calibrated one of these maps, but will try to do so in the next 24 hours. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:09, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- I made the calibrated map and added it back to your Sandbox. It looks to me that the dot may be a bit low (2 or so pixels), but I am not sure. Let me know if it looks OK or it needs to be tweaked more. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:54, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- I think the problem was perhaps a WP:BYC issue - my last edit on the map last night was just remeasuring on Google Earth - apparently I got it right the second time doing that (ninth tweak overall). I am glad it is useful and need to let Pfly know it is working as he had asked about it initially. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:02, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Columbia River tributaries
Wow, thanks for all the work on these! I'd been poking at them off and on for a bit, but time is hard to come by for me. You've done in the last several days more than I'd been hoping to do over the rest of the year, and a lot more really. Now I can relax! heh. Pfly (talk) 03:39, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- I got the coordinates from Google Earth and saw where the mouth should be, but I am somehow unable to tweak the map to get the dot up. I will ask for help. I like the picture in the Geobox in your Sandbox very much. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:20, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Hey Finetooth, thanks for the comments at the review. I think I've addressed each of the issues you've brought up. If you have further comments, feel free to add them. If not, I'm interested in your opinion on where to go with it next. Thanks, GrszX 00:24, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

(undent) Can you please help handle these: they deal with primarily with sentence formation, finding a hard time with this.
- "Pundarika asks Krishna for a boon to stay in that form..." Awkward connection between "boon" and "stay in that form". It reads as though the boon is staying in some form.
- "When he asked the reason for their appearance, they told Pundalik that Kukkuta served his parents and thus became pious and that by serving the sage they became pure too." Snake sentence.
- "Pundalik and his wife [..] forced the parents to walk the whole way and to groom horses while Pundalik and his wife rode on horseback." Pundalik's parents are grooming the moving horses while Pundalik and his wife ride them?
- "Pundalik asked a boon that the Lord " Syntax error in the use of "boon" again.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 10:24, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Bridge Creeks all over the place
Hi, I saw that you had changed the Bridge Creek (John Day River) title to Bridge Creek (Oregon). The problem with this is that Oregon has many streams named Bridge Creek. Please see the GNIS list here. Adding the parent-stream name is a standard way to differentiate multiple streams with the same name in the same state. If you agree with this logic, could you please revert your change? Finetooth (talk) 01:07, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with your logic if this were an issue at Wikipedia. However, there are only currently two articles about streams named Bridge Creek. One is Bridge Creek (British Columbia) and the other is the one in question. No doubt there are hundreds(?) of streams with that name all over North America but it doesn't seem that they are notable or at any rate they don't have articles at Wikipedia. Therefore, there's no need to differentiate from any other creek (except the one in BC). WP:NC:LFORM says that "in practice, most rivers needing disambiguation have been identified by the smallest appropriate political entity." For interests of symmetry and ease of the general reader, I would prefer this format, i.e., Bridge Creek (Oregon), but I'm not adamant about it if you have strong feelings on the issue since "a river can be identified uniquely as a tributary of another river." Certainly if other Oregon Bridge Creeks have articles written about them in the future, this would be the way to go, but, as of now I feel the widest possible disambiguator serves the general audience of Wikipedia the best. — AjaxSmack 14:29, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
Elect the Best Financed, Least Offensive Person For the Job (aka Oregon COTW)
Hello fellow WikiProject Oregon folks, it’s time for another COTW. But first, just remember that those other guys only want to raise your taxes, but I won’t. A big thank you to those who helped make improvements to Bridges on US 101 and participating in The Semi-Annual Picture Drive. And unlike the other guys, I won’t ship your jobs overseas! This week, we have Mr. Bipartisan Wayne Morse who went from being a Republican to an Independent and finally to a Democrat. Then, let’s see if we can finish up creating articles for members of the Oregon House before their January inauguration. As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. I’m Aboutmovies, and I approve this message. Paid for the committee to elect Aboutmovies. Harvest Time @ COTW
Greetings WikiProject Oregon folks, it’s time for another edition of the fabled COTW. Thank you to all who helped make improvements to Wayne Morse and creating some members of the Oregon House. This week, we have by request Upper Klamath Lake which think made the news lately with a salmon plan. Then, in honor of the end of the harvest time, we will go farming with Fort Stevens. There is a beautiful link farm in the article that is ripe for harvesting into citations. It should provide for a bountiful feast, or alternatively you can take your hoe to it and weed some out. Peer Review Black Mamba
Thank you for the kindness of your peer review on the article Black Mamba. Unfortunately I was approached by this student today and informed they will be exiting the class. I am summoning up the mass exodus of several students involved in the project as Scholastic Attrition. An unfortunate outcome of heavy academic loads at such young ages. I noted that you had invested your time on the peer review and humbly ask you forgiveness; at least for a few students, I over estimated their willingness to commit to the project. --JimmyButler (talk) 16:38, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

I had also thought of making a "Common problems seen in articles at Peer Review" page and just dropping a link to it in the ones I did not review. DYKs
I know you mentioned on one of the talk pages about trying for some DYKs, which is great. First, someone nominated your Fairview Creek for one. Next, since you didn't seem real clear on the process I thought I would give you quick rundown. FYI I almost nominated the Dairy Creek (which if I find the source again at the state archives I'll note in the article that it was originally spelled Dary or Darry) and the Bybee wetlands articles. But there were two different problems, which leads into the criteria. Roughly:
- Start class articles and above (1500 characters of prose) (pretty much everything you write meets this)
- Created w/i the last 5 days or expand by 5X in the last 5 days
- Interesting "hook"
- Hook is cited inline from a RS
So that's the basics, thus most of the new articles you write qualify. Expansion is tricker, so personally I only bother trying for a DYK from an expansion if I started with a paragraph or less. The reason I didn't nom Dairy Creek was because I didn't find anything particularly interesting that I thought the "hook" checkers would agree was interesting. Unique type stuff usually works, and there if I could remember where I saw it, thus the fact that it is the largest tributary (not sure if by length or flow) of the Tualatin might have worked in conjunction with the Tualatin being the only river in Washington County. With Bybee, I was going to go with the one of the largest wetlands in the US bit, but it was a bit vague and the source was not from a third party. So, when you write in the future, keep that in mind and you can get your article featured on the main page, which in the past often means about 1000 hits, where on a typical day it might only get 5. Let me know if you have any questions or need help with a nomination. Aboutmovies (talk) 06:23, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
- Butting in, I am also pretty good with coming up with a hook (Dincher sometimes calls me Dr. Hook) if you ever are stuck. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:22, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
- I'll answer here rather than sending two notes. Thanks to you both. I have been 100 percent remiss about submitting suggestions for DYKs. I say to myself each time the idea occurs to me, "When things settle down, I'll look into that stuff." Things never settle down. However, your helpful and gentle nudges are welcome, and I'm telling myself to make some DYK efforts in the near future. I've been generating sidebar articles to go with Columbia Slough. That's the main reason I created Fairview Creek, Delta Park, Jacob Zimmerman House, and Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area. I think I might already have a hook for Blue Lake, which sits in its own tiny watershed north of Fairview Lake and has peculiar hydrological arrangements. I haven't written the Blue Lake article yet, but it's high on my to-do list. Finetooth (talk) 19:41, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Hey, Finetooth.
I am planning on nominating Lincolnshire to FAC, but the prose is a bag of crap, so I've since been scanning it and patching it up.
I know from experience that people generally don't have the patience to fix up an article about a faceless community somewhere in the Midwest, so I'm not asking you to copyedit it.
I'm just asking you to read it and tell me what you think. I have huge problems with redundancy and informal wording, so just tell me where to look if you happen to find anything concerning the topics.
Please get back to me as soon as you can.
Thanks, --Starstriker7(Dime algoor see my works) 03:43, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
- I just wanted to thank you for taking time to look Lincolnshire over. Maybe previous complaints of prose quality will finally be quelled here.

Very cold, must type about the Oregon COTW to stay warm
Hello again from WikiProject Oregon’s Collaboration of the Week HQ. Since there was no notice last time, thanks to those who helped improve Mike Riley and Mike Bellotti at the begging of the month and to those who helped create Oregon Department of Justice and Lindsay Applegate last week. Those last two were the red links with lots of links to them from other articles (DOJ was #1). For this week, in honor of Arctic Blast/Winter Storm/Damn its Freakin’ Cold Outside 2008/Storm of the Century/Is there ANYTHING else going on in the world?/We Might Actually Have a White Christmas, we have Snow Bunny. Then as part of the Stub elimination drive, we have state senator Margaret Carter, which could easily be turned into a nice DYK entry once expanded 5X. As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Have a Holly Jolly Christmas/Hanukah/ Kwanzaa/Winter Solstice. I will be glad to take a look at it, but it may take me a few days as I may have limited internet time / access in the next week or so. I did just run the script on it as AZPR - the bot will add the link in several hours, but it is here if you want. Nothing major.
Also realize I never replied to your comment on Peacock Lane - the irony with Cancy Cane Lane is that it is "Summer Street" but is only well known in winter. My guess is many places have their own Peacock / Candy Cane lanes, I just had enough reliable sources to get a DYK on one of them. ;-) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:33, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

In other news, I've been trying to (still) revive WP:FRANCE and review articles for A-class on Milhist. I'd like to try to find something completely different to work on in the New Year, though; maybe a sports team or a place... Lazulilasher (talk) 01:42, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
- Btw, when I get an article with active verbs I'll stop by! Haha, I'm sure you're aware that I couldn't write an entire article in one verb tense; I must always go back and change them. Lazulilasher (talk) 01:43, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi. Happy new year to you. If you have time, could you do a peer review of this article. Your opinions helped greatly improve one of my previous FA's and I am looking forward to your opinions this time around. There is a discussion on the same PR about what would be the correct name for the article. Please air your views on this issue also. Users Ruhrfish and Redtigerxyz have made constructive comments and I am looking forward to yours too. regards,Dineshkannambadi (talk) 16:58, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Finetooth, I think you should be an admin
Dear Finetooth: I know that you declined a nomination before; however, times have changed. You are one of the most valuable and trusted contributors to the project. You have helped me and countless others in our article work. You possess the poise and ability. In my opinion, we need our best, most intelligent, and mature editors to assume the role. And, to be frank, we need more like you. To reiterate: I know that you have declined a nomination before; but I cannot think of a more qualified person to become an admin. Kindest, Lazulilasher (talk) 16:41, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- I second Lazulilasher's thoughts, and should you accept I'd be more than happy to co-nom. Cheers, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 16:43, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, well, I figured you would not be interested; but, I wanted to ask anyway. In my view, you would be ideal for the role; but, then again I'm not in charge. Btw, I, um, might be asking for a Peer Review in the next few weeks...;) Lazulilasher (talk) 03:53, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your time. I am a bit busy in my real life and will get back to the article soon. Thanks again for all the comments and suggestions, they sure are helpful. Cheers. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 12:32, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi Finetooth. If you have the time, could you copy edit this article which has seen a lot of FAR related edits by myself and Sarvagnya and nearly 15K of additional data. It is in FARC now and I would appreciate if someone like you could give it polish, when it most needs it. I dont think it needs massive cpedits, just on the surface. Even if you start a week or so from now, its fine. We will continue to improve it over the next few days. Best Regards, Dineshkannambadi (talk) 00:05, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
Happy New COTW
Greetings from WikiProject Oregon’s Collaboration of the Week. First off, thank you to everyone who has done work the last few weeks on the last two COTWs. This week we have by request Oregon and California Railroad, part of the lands involved in the Oregon Land Fraud Scandal. Then as part of the Stub elimination drive, we have longtime politician Grattan Kerans, which hopefully can be turned into a nice DYK entry. As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Aboutmovies (talk) 10:25, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

I will reread the article and weigh in on the FAC in a day or two. I like the Name section. I have also been very favorably impressed by my contacts with GNIS - a number of Pennsylvania state parks had wrong or missing information and they were always prompt to reply and fix errors as found. Given to Finetooth for all of your help with Peer review, especially reviewing items from the backlog. Given with respect and admiration, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:33, 14 January 2009 (UTC) |
- Thanks, I picked a time when the backlog had enough done that I could take a week off, and not too bad a number there. Please do not think you need to do any (or any more) at the backlog than you would otherwise do. I know you are busy with FAC. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:28, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Finetooth, I see you know that Ruhrfisch is taking a break from PR. I have volunteered to keep updating Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog/items for the next week or so, but I'm looking for people who would be interested in helping maintain this list in the longer term. I'm asking both you and User:Brianboulton since you've both been active in reviewing articles from this list recently. I figure if a few people are willing to update it, then each person would only have to do it a few times a week. Interested? Dr pda (talk) 07:47, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Hey Finetooth, back in October you did a peer review for Idlewild Park. In November it passed as a Good article. I was wondering if you could take some time to do an informal, even brief review again and provide suggestions for a Featured Article push. I would very much appreciate it whenever you find the time. Borchgrevink Peer review
Thank you for your review of this article. I shall certainly attend to the points you raise. On the question of the Bay of Whales pic I'm not too worried about losing that. What about Image:Ross Ice Shelf 1997.jpg as an alternative? It appears to have NOAA status which I think covers it for PD? Otherwise, in one of my old books I have a really old picture of the Ross Ice Shelf from Ross's Voyage to the South Seas, 1844. It's a drawing, not a photograph, but very graphic. And Ross's party were the only people, prior to Borchgrevink's men, to actually see the Barrier. I could easily scan the Ross drawing in - which do you think would make the more interesting illustration? Brianboulton (talk) 00:52, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Re: Image license question
Hi Finetooth, I do not think the image is public domain in the United States (hence failing for storage on either Wikipedia and Commons). This came about because the original map was not public domain in Canada by 1996. I will try to break down the issues involved.
- Note that commons:Commons:Image casebook#Maps specifically states all maps are copyrighted (unless the copyright holder says so otherwise).
- The Atlas of Canada is a Canadian government work and hence falls under Crown copyrights.
- As stated on its website,[1] it is free for non-commercial use, but not free for commercial ventures. Permission is needed for commercial use. "Freely available" does not equate to "free for any use".
- This flowchart states that such works would fall into public domain 50 years after its publishing.
- Hence, the 1957 map is in Canadian public domain on 2007.
- However, the US has signed a copyright treaty, the URAA, that renews the copyrights of the existing works then.
- This URAA agreement renews the United States copyright of foreign works unpublished in US; any foreign work that was not in public domain on January 1, 1996, had its copyright extended or renewed.
- In the case of the 1957 map, its copyright for the United States last until 1957 + 95 = 2052.
- Hence, although the original map is in Canadian public domain, it will not be in US public domain until 2052.
I could recommend that the editor concerned could instead of using the 1957 map, use the 1915 map (which is definitely PD in US due to publishing before 1923), or use maps sourced from GeoGratis, which has declared all the works stored on it as public domain. Jappalang (talk) 08:38, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for signing up at Wikipedia:Peer review/volunteers and for your work doing reviews. Glad to offer my comments on this article. (I'd say that I did it to return the help you gave me on Almu, but I didn't notice that it was you who was working on Forest Park (Portland) until after I finished the review.) It reads a lot stronger now, & the facts you recount about its creation were enlightening. I did add a couple of red links, to articles I believe should be written: Rev. Eliot was the first President of Reed College, after all, & the Portland City Club is a notable & influential Portland institution. Maybe someone will even write these articles... A review request
I hesitate to ask this favour, but I need a little help with my current PR nom, Benjami Morrell. It has been picked up by User:Sarcasticidealist, but he has made it clear he can only comment on a "hit and run" basis. Although I value his contributions, I need a proper review of the whole article rather than hit-and-run comments. I wonder, as there is a (temporary) lull in the PR backlog, if you could give it a look? I would much appreciate this. Brianboulton (talk) 01:17, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
