RfA

[edit]

Hi, Epbr123. As one of the participants in the RfA, I just wanted to let you know that I meant the positive things I said about your Wiki-activity, and I think that the negative things I pointed out can be remedied in the future. You are an excellent and very dedicated editor. I value your advice in GA/FA, and hope I may be able to ask for your help in this area again. We all need breaks now and then, and any editor who has worked as long and hard here as you have, and who has undergone as contentious a reviewing as you have just undergone has certainly earned one. I wish you well, hope you come back with renewed energy. Regards. Dekkappai (talk) 19:04, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Epbr123

[edit]

As you know, the GA and FA processes benefit enormously from your help and participation, and quality will degrade without you. I fully understand your decision to withdraw for a bit, and there is no need for an RfA to ever become as intense and personal as yours did. I've seen it before, I hate the RfA process for that very reason, I'm sorry it happened to you. Please take solace in the number (and importantly, the names) of those who supported you, and please return to us soon, after a well deserved break. More than 60 respected Wikipedians supported your candidacy; I hope that means something to you in spite of the outcome. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:10, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Epbr, I just wanted to second Sandy's comments. I generally don't ever visit the RfA world because it all-too-often degenerates into a forum for people to hash out old grudges again. I made an exception when I found out that you were nominated because I do respect your work. Your leave extremely valuable comments at FAC, and we will definitely miss your contributions. I hope you're just going to take a nice break to remember what is really valuable - an appreciation of yourself for who you are, a good attitude, and a sense of humor (to deal with those who haven't mastered the good attitude part). If you're having trouble with the good attitude part right now, I highly recommend ice cream and/or brownies. It's hard to be anything but happy with a mouth full of deliciousness ;) I hope we see you again soon! Karanacs (talk) 17:56, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I just noticed your semi-retirement. Like those above, I feel that Wikipedia will be worse off without your contributions. Although I opposed the nomination, I do have a great deal of respect for the work you've done. The RFA definitely became a bit of a piling-on, and I know that's gotta suck. At any rate -- I hope my comments did not come off as reflecting any disrespect for the excellent work you do, and I hope to see you again around the wiki. -Pete (talk) 00:17, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Epbr123, don't worry about the RfA. Heaps of useless people become admins and heaps of useful people don't. You've contributed way more than most admins already. Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 22:55, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm so happy to see your recent contrib history, Epbr; I hope all is well. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:34, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Barle

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Barle, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Barle. — Rod talk 18:09, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review idea

[edit]

Hi, I have made a proposal that no peer review request be archived without some response. To aid in this, there is a new list of PR requests at least one week old that have had no repsonses beyond a semi-automated peer review. This list is at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog.

There are just over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, so I figure if each of these volunteers reviewed just one or two PR requests without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog (as there have been 2 or 3 such unanswered requests a day on average).

If you would be able to help out with a review or two a month from the "no responses" backlog list that would be great (and much appreciated). Please discuss questions, comments, or ideas at the PR talk page and thanks in advance for your help, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:15, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm curious why you changed "400" to "four hundred". I prefer the spelled out numbers myself, but I thought WP:MOSNUM dictated numerals for numbers over ten. Just trying to keep all of my MOS rules straight. Ah! Awadewit | talk 16:22, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Consistency is the important thing. If 400 is in numerals, "eighteenth century" etc. will also need to use numerals. MOS states that an alternative to the "over ten" rule is that any number which can be expressed in two or less words may be spelled out. It's up to you which rule to follow, but it needs to be used consistently. Epbr123 (talk) 16:34, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Until recently, there was a rule that all centuries had to use numerals. Currently, centuries may either use numerals throughout or use the same rules that apply to other numbers. Epbr123 (talk) 17:03, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The reason I declined the speedy Porterjoh was because it wasn't a candidate for speedy deletion -particularly when there was also a Slovene wikipedia link to the equivalent. Whenever I see somebody continously reverting it and adding a speedy delete tag, it appears to be there isn't good faith involved, if it had been tagged as an afd/lfd I wouldn't have removed it; it can get particularly frustrating to me that my course of editing, which ALWAYS is intended to serve some purpose to improve wikipedia in the long term is being halted. No hard feelings, but in future perhaps you could ask the editor of the article you place a speedy tag on it why they think it constitutes an encyclopedia article. Hi Epbr123! I hope it's OK to respond here (I'll link this reply from my RfA page). From one or two of the comments I feel there may be a little confusion regarding my AfD and vandal-fighting contributions. Unfortunately for me, I don't think my recent edit history gives the full picture :P I was much more active in these areas last year, before becoming involved in the GA sweep and the FA-Team - if you check back through my contribs, this page is a fair sample of my activity in both areas. I hope this goes some way to addressing your concerns. All the best, EyeSerenetalk 18:15, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: My RfA

I appreciate you nominating me. If nothing else, it was a learning experience and hopefully I'll become a better editor for it, as some of the opposes did raise some genuine issues. I am disappointed in the number of people who opposed me in whole or part based on the userbox despite the IfD I quoted as evidence I'm not biased against Christian articles. To me, such reasoning reveals more bias on the part of the person making the accusation than it does on my part. :) Cheers! Redfarmer (talk) 16:12, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AWB help

[edit]

How do you use AWB to remove empty parameters from WP:CIT templates, and the other helpful copy-editing stuff that you do on articles? As always much appreciate your help, Cirt (talk) 23:12, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • You have to develop your own programme using the find and replace tool. For example, to remove empty cite parameters, you need to find and replace "author = |", "author =|", "author=|", etc. with "". Epbr123 (talk) 23:24, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Page numbers

[edit]

Hi, I have a question. What is the standard way of writing page numbers? Is it "pp. 250-251", or "pp. 250-51", or "pp. 250-1"? Thanks! --Phenylalanine (talk) 01:55, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Epbr123!

I turn to you for a little help with the above-mentioned article. SandyGeorgia referred me to you. Could you please help with some MoS issues? Regards, ShahidTalk2me 10:28, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for helping with the article Preity Zinta. I always had some queries on the ellipses. I studied your edits in the article, and could understand the use of nbsps in case of ellipses (which I could not fully understand reading the MoS). I have some more queries (for the purpose of my understanding, so that in future I can be more sure about MoS)
You used nbsp before "million". However, million is not a unit. So, is it what MoS suggests?
Once you converted thirteen to 13, and twenty to 20; but later changed 10 to ten. Why so? Does it depend on the context?
Not in this article, but I have one more query. What is correct—3rd century or third century? 15th century or fifteenth century?
Thanks a lot. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:04, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding nbsps, it's for any numerical/non-numerical combination, not just for units, as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Non-breaking spaces. Numbers over nine generally use numerals, except when a spelled-out number under 10 is present in the same sentence, as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Numbers as figures or words. This keeps the number style consistent within a sentence. As per Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Numbers as figures or words, centuries may either use numerals, or use the same rule as for other numbers, i.e., numerals only for numbers over nine. Epbr123 (talk) 12:32, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. I am copying this reply now, so that I can refer to it when needed. Thanks.--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:44, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One more query

[edit]

I went through the MoS things in your user page. Extremely great!

One question. The "past" and the "last" thing. What is teh difference? For example, in teh Preity Zinta article, you changed "last decade" to "past decade" (which I now see, has been changed to "last" again by User:Shshshsh). So far as I understand, last decade means the last calender decade. For example, as of now, the last decade is 1991–2000. On the other hand, past decade means the preceding ten years. Foe example, 1998–2007 constitute the past decade of 2008. Am I correct in interpreting?--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:56, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • That's correct. Another context where "past" and the "last" have different meanings is, for example, "the last 5 years of his life" versus "the past 5 years of his life". Epbr123 (talk) 13:01, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have changed "last" to "past" in the article.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:12, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I should point out that techically there nothing wrong with using "last", as according to dictionary it can have the meaning as "past", but because "last" has various meanings it's less ambiguous to use "past". Epbr123 (talk) 13:30, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So I wasn't wrong either.;) -- I'm extremely grateful to you for your generous help. Thank you, ShahidTalk2me 13:56, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cadair

[edit]

Hi, I came across the article you created on Cadair just now. Could I ask you what is your source for this? I know of no such place and the OS map reference gives a blank on the OS map of the area (I know the small valley indicated). There is certainly no village of that name in southern Gwynedd. A farmhouse or inn maybe? Plenty of Welsh place names begin with Cadair - Cadair Idris/Cader Idris is a well-known mountain in that area. Anyway, to the best of my knowledge there is no village of that name, large or small, in Gwynedd. I've scoured several detailed maps for the general area, going by the location on the "Cadair" article's map and the grid reference, but again can find nothing to indicate it as a location of note or any other feature. Enaidmawr (talk) 22:28, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the quick response. The mystery is solved. As for Cae Clyd, I've just tracked it with Google too and so managed to find it on the OS map of the area. It's just a couple of houses on the edge of Blaenau Ffestiniog, not a village or hamlet. I'm going to redirect it to the latter. Thanks again. Enaidmawr (talk) 22:53, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cae Clyd

[edit]

I'd also like to know where the village of Cae Clyd is. Sounds more like a field (cae) or farm. Again there is definitely no village of that name, as far as I know. Source please? :) Enaidmawr (talk) 22:38, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cite tidying

[edit]

Thanks for your work on Peak Oil. One minor nitpick: according to Wikipedia:Citation_templates the page ranges don't need the "pp.", so it's "pages=23-25", not "pages=pp.23-25". The cite templates keep getting better. LeadSongDog (talk) 20:09, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Each ref needs to be consistently formatted, including the page numbers. Before my edits, there were instances of "pp. 93–94", "pp.96–97" and "890–897". The "pp."s needed to be added to the cite templates for the sake of consistency. Not all cite templates automatically add the "pp."s. Epbr123 (talk) 20:17, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Baldslow, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. This overwhelming use of unreferenced tags is in no way positive when you don't use them where it's necessary. What about doing this: Check what's links to the page, what kind of iw's it has and if there is anything in the article that is controversial. If you, after doing this, still doubt the facts, you can add a {{fact}} on the facts you doubt. {{unreferenced}} is already far to much used on en.wiki compared to other wikis, and hasn't helped doing your wiki any better. What about using them where it's really necessary? --EivindJ (talk) 20:34, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see, I then get the point. I'll just be better on using references. I understand they are more essential on en.wiki than no.wiki. I bet you're doing a great job (I can see your barn stars :) --EivindJ (talk) 22:03, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copyedit request for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

[edit]

I am requesting a copyedit for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The FAC for the article is asking for "a thorough copyedit is needed by an uninvolved editor, meaning someone outside the "club" of regular editors on this article. Attention is needed to simple grammar, comma usage, voice, unnecessarily wordy clauses, and other matters." So, I am coming to you and asking to take a look. If you have time, I'd appreciate it, thanks! Also, the FAC can be found at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Gary King (talk) 20:24, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's at FAC right now and that is the major issue being brought up: "Check for passive voice that eliminates or obscures the subjects." and "In general, the article relies far too heavily on the passive." I would prefer a second pair of eyes look at the article since I'm far too familiar with the content by now to be as effective copyediting for the passive voice when I already know what the intended subjects are for verbs. Pre-FAC question for MoS check

[edit]

Hi, Epbr123.

Believe it or not, this has nothing to do with your RfB comments . SandyGeorgia suggested that you would be a good person to talk to. I have brought the Abbey Mills Mosque article from a POV-laden mess that was reported by the mosque's PR firm to OTRS up to a good article, and I want to take it to FAC. I opened a peer review, and got some great advice. I asked Sandy to comment, and she suggested prior to the FAC, that an MoS check be done, and she said you were an expert at that. May I trouble you to give the article a once over? Thanks. -- Avi (talk) 03:48, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for looking at the article. One comment, I think that "mega mosque" should remain bolded, as that is the most common term found in the press. Thoughts? -- Avi (talk) 12:07, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do they call it "a mega mosque" or "the mega mosque"? If they just use it as a description it shouldn't be bolded, but if they use it as a nickname it should be bolded. Epbr123 (talk) 12:11, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
From the citation given, it looks as though it's just a description. Epbr123 (talk) 12:15, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's the first citation. Compare that with #4 and #7, for example. -- Avi (talk) 12:17, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
After looking at all the other sources, I think it should be bolded. Epbr123 (talk) 12:25, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The reason it was so far removed from the opening, was that this was one of the issues raised by the OTRS complainant, that the term was pejorative and that the mosque officials and PR group were trying to combat it. Therefore in the interests of fairness, I felt that the explanation needed to precede the term as opposed to its being a fait accompli. -- Avi (talk) 12:28, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I notice you re-bolded it and used a definite article. Thanks, and thank you for the time you took to look it over. In your opinion, do you think it's ready for FAC listing? -- Avi (talk) 12:31, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's ready, as long as you've done enough research to ensure it's comprehensive. Epbr123 (talk) 12:40, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thank you for your time and input. -- Avi (talk) 12:42, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(<-)FYI, I have listed the article as Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Abbey Mills Mosque; thanks for your help. Also, FYI, Ryan switched his oppose to support on the RfB, if that makes a difference for you :) -- Avi (talk) 14:26, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck with the nom. I'm afraid I rarely vote support in RfBs. There isn't a great demand for bureaucrats, so I think we can afford to request near perfection from candidates, and quite a few valid points are being made by your opposers. This will be a good learning experience for you, so if you don't pass this time around, I'm sure you will sometime this year. Epbr123 (talk) 14:50, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of "pete heuisler"

[edit]

A tag has been placed on "pete heuisler" requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. PGWG (talk) 14:50, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rfb participation thanks

[edit]

Hello, Epbr123.

I wanted to personally thank you for taking part in the project-wide discussions regarding my candidacy for bureaucratship. After bureaucratic discussion, the bureaucrats decided that there was sufficient significant and varied opposition to my candidacy, and thus no consensus to promote. Although personally disappointed, I both understand and respect their decision, especially in light of historical conservatism the project has had when selecting its bureaucrats. As you felt the need to oppose my candidacy, I would appreciate any particular thoughts or advice you may have as to what flaws in my candidacy you perceived and how you feel they may be addressed. Once again, thank you for your participation, and a special thank you for your help on Abbey Mills Mosque which is up on WP:FAC now. -- Avi (talk) 20:15, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Epbr123; I wanted to say thank you for supporting my request for adminship, which passed with 100 supports, 0 opposes and 1 neutral. I wanted to get round everybody individually, even though it's considered by some to be spam (which... I suppose it is! but anyway. :)). A query

[edit]

Hi! Can you please help me in this query. Is there a non-breaking space between the dollar sign and the numerical figure following it? I guess it is needed. But, wanted to clarify. Example, $10, $ 10, or, $ 10, which one is correct (the last one has an nbsp)? Thanks a lot. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:20, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the help. The MoS says, "Currency abbreviations that come before the number are unspaced if they consist of or end in a symbol (£123, €123), and spaced if alphabetic (R 75)". And this space for alphabetic abbreviation, is is a non-breaking space?--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:03, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, R 75 would need a non-breaking space. Epbr123 (talk) 10:53, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Logical quotation

[edit]

Hi, Epbr123, and thanks for your recent cleanup of Master Juba. However, I am confused by your changes in several of the quotations. It's my understanding that punctuation goes inside the quotation marks when the punctuation is part of the material quoted. But you seem to have changed all punctuation to the outside of the quotation marks without regard to what the original looked like. Am I misreading the guidelines on logical quotations? Thanks, — Dulcem (talk) 23:42, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:MOS#Punctuation isn't particularly clear on this, but it's my understanding that the punctuation goes outside whenever a sentence fragment is quoted. I'll leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style to ask for confirmation. Epbr123 (talk) 23:53, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kate Bush

[edit]

I've cut out a lot of excess detail in Kate Bush. The majority of it is details about songs and albums that are probably better suited for those individual pages rather than the main Kate Bush article. You could easily take the material that's been removed and use it to improve a number of Bush song and album articles rather quickly. I'e left some details in because I either could not figure out how to summarize them, or wanted to cut something out but wasn't sure if by cutting it out I would accidentally remove a source for something else. WesleyDodds (talk) 06:18, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know what each citation refers to, so if you let me know what you think should be removed I may remove it myself. Most of the song articles are already quite well-developed so there isn't much info that can be transfered. Epbr123 (talk) 11:20, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My mistake was due to one piece of vandalism being replaced by another. The complaint before your's was due to someone blanking a page rather than nominating it for deletion. Water hammer

[edit]

Please will you stop replacing the bit at the beginning, as it is wrong. If you can support it with refernces then that is OK, but the text books I have looked at (and I lecture on this type of thing) all support the view that it is an unsteady flow phenomenon due to Newton's second law. You cannot apply Bernoulli's equation in this case. Also the bit about work energy is correct, but unhelpful.

I can get Dr Tijselling to look at it if you want. Donebythesecondlaw (talk) 08:49, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
