This issue's reader suggestion from Sennecaster:
One topic I've been broadly thinking about lately is the concept of GA sweeps. There hasn't been one in well over a decade; discussion of a new one is traditionally stymied by the sheer number of GAs that would need sweeping, considering there are over ten times as many as there were at the last sweep. Nonetheless, there's no dispute that many GAs don't really count as 99.5th percentile articles, or even decent-quality articles (whether one's own personal reading of WIAGA is closer to the former or the latter, and how different those things are, is an exercise for the reader). I've been brainstorming ideas, and I've been wondering if we can tackle the problem with limited-scope sweeps. One idea would be sweeping popular or vital articles -- those that get enough views to make up a significant proportion of the "GA experience" to readers. Another would be focusing on shorter GAs, which might trend towards a less in-depth treatment of the topic than could really justify the rating. There may very well be a path here to maintaining GA standards, and either of those would have the benefit that they might be more likely to encourage people to work on rather than simply delist articles -- popular topics with lots of interested parties willing to help, or smaller topics that don't seem like too big a challenge to pick up.

What is deemed a reliable source?
I would like to put some valid criticisms/controversies on particular pages in the interest of intellectual fairness and transparency. I noticed my edits on a particular page were taken down due to not being considered (let us be fair and call it what it is) reliable sources.
I would genuinely like to know what sources are considered genuine in the hopes that I can find those criticisms/controversies and have them properly kept on the article. This is a step to show that there isn't a bias on Wikipedia and ALL intellectual discoveries that are factual will be kept on here. There should also be an agreement that if reliable sources of these criticisms/controversies are brought forth, that the edits will stay on the page and will show the honesty, integrity, and mature attitude that I wish to see here on Wikipedia :)
Thank you for taking the time to read this and looking forward to hearing back from you in the future. Updatewithfacts (talk) 22:50, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Updatewithfacts: as both of these are considered partisan sources, they're generally inappropriate for determining controversy, which makes the addition undue weight. Elli (talk | contribs) 01:08, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for responding to my message. I recognize that the sources are considered partisan but to be fair many other partisan sources are listed as reliable sources so I am hurt at the double-standard. But moving past that, they are partisan but they point out something that actually happened. The tweet was made by them, the tweet was screenshot and then the institute responded to the tweet. Where can I list both the sources and the event. I am willing to post it elsewhere on the page and not list it as controversy but it is 100% appropriate to use the sources if they document something that happened. Any additional advice pertaining to that: maybe I should create a section under "news"? Updatewithfacts (talk) 01:11, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
Invitation to discuss review
Hello,
I saw a notification that my user profile page is being reviewed. I am confused about why my user profile page is being reviewed, maybe you can help me understand? I do not recally any curse words, drug references, or anything of that nature on my profile so hopefully it will be seen as my information that I am allowed to post regarding myself, just as you are allowed to create a profile page about yourself.
Here is hoping we can figure out what is going on and come to a respectful consensus.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Updatewithfacts (talk) 01:40, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Updatewithfacts: oh, I think you have a misunderstanding. Whenever a page is created, it is by default "unreviewed", meaning that no one has checked it for issues. As I'm a reviewer, I can review pages - I saw nothing wrong with your userpage, so I marked it as reviewed, to remove it from the "unreviewed" queue. Elli (talk | contribs) 01:41, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. Thank you soooo much for clearing up the misunderstanding :) I appreciate you taking the time to do that. And I also hope it is alright having addressed you as you; I am trying to be respectful of user's pronouns. I am glad to hear that there was nothing wrong; that helps me feel a ton better. Anywho, thanks again :) Updatewithfacts (talk) 01:44, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Updatewithfacts: totally fine, always happy to explain things. Also, feel free to refer to me with whichever pronouns you like. Elli (talk | contribs) 01:45, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- Will do; thanks again :) Updatewithfacts (talk) 03:06, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
Your edit summary still doesn't explain how PA was a tipping-point state for Donald Trump. He lost and his electoral margin of victory was well beyond the number of electoral votes PA has. Davejohnsan (talk) 04:18, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Davejohnsan: it's the tipping point state for a Donald Trump victory. If a uniform shift had occurred - enough for Trump to win Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin (Biden's three narrowest wins), both Trump and Biden would be at 269 electoral votes. Trump needed to also win Pennsylvania - the next closest state - to get to 270. Elli (talk | contribs) 04:19, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for adding the photo. I had found that earlier, but cam to the conclusion that we couldn't use it because of the licensing. But, we'll see if anybody objects, I guess. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:50, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- @RoySmith: is there a particular concern? I figured that since the subject is dead, it would fall under the NFCC. Elli (talk | contribs) 14:51, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Old congressional elections sourcing question
Do you happen to know of any acceptable source that has vote total/ percent data for old ( Pre 1900) US house elections by district? A lot of articles on US house elections are missing district level data, and the only source that I can easily find is Ourcampaigns, which is generally unreliable. There's one book I could find on it, but it's not available online AFAIK and it's not at my local library. Jackattack1597 (talk) 18:02, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Jackattack1597: no, I don't, sadly. I wish I did - if you find one, please let me know, that would be very useful information. Elli (talk | contribs) 18:04, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
User page / popups anomaly
I was trying out navigation popups; among other things, it provides a preview of a user's page when their name is moused over. For some reason, yours showed up as code:
{"batchcomplete":true,"warnings":{"main":{"warnings":"Subscribe to the mediawiki-api-announce mailing list at for notice of API deprecations and breaking changes. Use Special:ApiFeatureUsage to see usage of deprecated features by your application."},"revisions":{"warnings":"Because \"rvslots\" was not specified, a legacy format has been used for the output. This format is deprecated, and in the future the new format will always be used."}},"query":{"pages":[{"pageid":42023907,"ns":2,"title":"User:Elli","revisions":[{"revid":1025556903,"parentid":1024976117,"minor":true,"user":"Elli","timestamp":"2021-05-28T06:37:27Z","contentformat":"application/json","contentmodel":"json","content":"{\n \"Name\": \"Elli\"
... and so on. The page itself looks fine; it's simply the preview in popups. None of the other 30 or 40 user pages I looked at appeared this way, and it happened in both Safari and Firefox. I haven't a clue how popular the option is; it may be that few people use popups, and it's not worth tinkering with the page. In any case, I thought you might like to know. Cheers, BlackcurrantTea (talk) 07:12, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- @BlackcurrantTea: oh, this is because I changed the content model to JSON. Usually people don't do this at their userpage, I thought it was kinda funny though. Elli (talk | contribs) 12:25, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- Interesting; I've no experience changing content models, and wouldn't have expected the code to be exposed that way. As long as you're aware of it, and it doesn't seem to cause problems, why not? Cheers, BlackcurrantTea (talk) 13:25, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- @BlackcurrantTea: yeah, I just thought it looked cool - and gave some more technically-involved editors a bit of a laugh. I use popups too, though I haven't tended to hover links to my userpage. Elli (talk | contribs) 13:27, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the encouragement!
Hey - just stopping by to thank you for the 'thanks' regarding the article I wrote (Capital punishment in the Gambia). Thank you for the review as well. It's always nice to get that kind of encouragement! I plan on writing other similar articles in the future, especially for African countries, although I don't know if I'll get as lucky as I did with the Gambia in finding so many sources to build such a fleshed-out article lol. Hi, can you please help me?
Hi Elli, I was making a .svg cartogram of House seats in each state, so that every seat is clearly visible and can be identified. I intend to put them somewhere in the 2020 United States House of Representatives election page and similar pages when ready, as in the actual map version it's almost impossible to identify tiny districts and the gerrymandered ones. But here's the issue, I went through the source code of Infobox maps in 2021 United States elections, 2020 United States elections among others and it turns out that every second map uses somewhat different color scheme. So can you please help me by letting me know the actual color scheme and redirecting me to the actual color scheme template (if it exists). Thanks. Cheers! CX Zoom (talk) 18:18, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: hi, yes, thank you for reaching out. I've created and maintained Wikipedia:WikiProject Elections and Referendums/USA Legend Colors to explain the proper color schemes - I hope that page can answer your questions (if it's still unclear, feel free to ask me for more clarification). Elli (talk | contribs) 18:20, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: Thanks a lot. Can you please reconsider the Independent's color, as light grey is often used for states not up for election, and dark grey is also used for nonpartisan elections like here in 2020 United States gubernatorial elections.
- Also, can you make a Puert Rico specific color scheme, since they don't have Dems & Reps like the rest of US, and also have a multiparty system, as in these articles, 2020 Puerto Rico gubernatorial election & 2020 United States House of Representatives election in Puerto Rico. This is further complicated by the New Progressive Party members some of whom identify as Democrats at national level (e.g., Gov. Pedro Pierluisi) and some as Republicans (e.g., Resident Commissioner Jennifer Gonzalez). Thanks. Cheers! CX Zoom (talk) 18:48, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: I didn't make most of this color schemes, I was only documenting what was already in use (also, I do think grey as independent makes sense - it's different enough to be noticeable). If we were to change it we would have to change potentially thousands of maps.
- As for Puerto Rico - that situation is confusing - feel free to make colors for them. Elli (talk | contribs) 19:06, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: I got this set of colors (gain/hold) for the major two parties, which are enough for national level maps, since other parties are just too small. They are at User:CX Zoom/TestPage16#PR, would you please check them to make sure that they go along with the other colors without issues. I'm pretty confused about the colors of the "Popular Democratic Party" which has a color scheme extremely close to that of Republican party. Thanks. CX Zoom (talk) 21:58, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: they look OK to me - maybe make the hold ones a bit lighter? Elli (talk | contribs) 22:03, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: Agreed and made them extremely lighter since the color in the middle was vaguely similar to Republican Hold's color. Can you please check it again. Thanks! CX Zoom (talk) 22:07, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: both of those look fine. Elli (talk | contribs) 22:10, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you very much! CX Zoom (talk) 22:16, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: of course, anytime. I can add the colors to the list, if you'd like. Elli (talk | contribs) 22:17, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: Yeah sure. Please add them. CX Zoom (talk) 22:19, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- Finally, completed for 2020 results. Please check which one seems better. The first one is the linear one, i.e., all congressional districts appear as a series of numbers, with district 1 being the topmost left and then continuing from left to right, without any regard to geography. The second one roughly reflects the geography, however, as in any cartogram it doesn't really guarantee geographical accuracy. The legends and related information is in its commons page. Also I've requested a file move on the first one as you can see, that I've given completely different names to the two files. It'd be great if you could help. Thanks. Cheers! CX Zoom (talk) 15:16, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: I've carried out the rename - though I may try adopting them to a new naming convention in the future (I'm working on a general convention for election related stuff, though I haven't added rules for cartograms yet). I think the second one is more helpful than the first one, as it at least roughly indicates where the districts are. Elli (talk | contribs) 15:21, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for renaming it. And can you please add the cartogram to 2020 House election page where you think it is appropriate. I want it to be easily seen but I'm pretty new and don't know much about rules of such pages. So I don't want get into edit wars and stuff like that. Thanks again. Cheers! 1924 United States gubernatorial elections
Hi Elli, the image for 1924 United States gubernatorial elections has an error: Ohio is a republican hold when it should be a democratic hold. The original creator has had their account suspended, so I figured you would be a good person to ask given your work on the other gubernatorial elections. If you could fix it it would be much appreciated. Thanks! -Mad Mismagius (talk) 20:59, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted
Hi Elli, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. However, you should consider adding relevant wikiproject talk-page templates, stub-tags and categories to new articles that you create if you aren't already in the habit of doing so, since your articles will no longer be systematically checked by other editors (User:Evad37/rater and User:SD0001/StubSorter.js are useful scripts which can help). Reviewing articles
Hi Elli, I was looking at recent changes, and noticed that you are reviewing a lot of pages very quickly. Some of the pages you marked as reviewed don't have any sources, such as Boʻz District, Bagʻdod District and Dangʻara District. At the least, these should be tagged with {{unsourced}} while reviewing. Thaks, Laplorfill (talk) 05:44, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Laplorfill: hi, I was not reviewing those articles, I was only reviewing redirects to those articles. The redirects were clearly appropriate. The articles have been around for a while (so they have already been reviewed, by someone else). Elli (talk | contribs) 05:46, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- Got it, apologies for my mistake. Best, Laplorfill (talk) 06:08, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- (talk page watcher) As the one creating all of these redirects, I'll be honest, even I'm getting tripped up figuring out which are the redirects and which are the targets sometimes. As part of this I ran into the duplicate DAB pages ʻAmakihi and 'Amakihi, and almost redirected the former to itself, thinking it was the latter. -- Tamzin (she/they) | o toki tawa mi. 06:12, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

How to add photos --Photoholiccrazy (talk) 06:26, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Photoholiccrazy: hi, thanks for the question. You can upload the photo to Wikimedia Commons here, but it needs to be either a photo that you yourself have created, or one available under an appropriate license (some information is available here). Then you can add the image to the article - Help:Pictures can help you there.
- If you have any questions about any of this, feel free to follow-up with me here. Elli (talk | contribs) 06:30, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

Parenthetical referencing
Hi Elli. In this revert, you claimed to be removing parenthetical referencing, which is indeed deprecated, but in fact you removed footnote references, which are not. I am therefore restoring the previous citation style. Kanguole 08:53, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

Superman ice cream name
Hi. I saw you were the last person to edit the Superman ice cream info. I just signed up for an account to tell someone that knows how to edit that the information about the ice cream being named after the DC character is 100% false. The ice cream was invented and named before Superman the character was born. This link is very very informative https://www.awesomemitten.com/superman-ice-cream/ Please please make changes and more details! I would if I could! Hello, Elli,
Whenever you tag a page for deletion (CSD, PROD, AFD/MFD/TFD/etc.), please post a notification on the talk page of the page creator so they are aware of the deletion and also, the reason why a page has been tagged for deletion. Otherwise, they will not be aware of problems that existed and they might try to recreate the page. I find it useful to use Twinkle to tag pages because after you set up your Preferences to "Notify page creator", the program will post these notices for you which makes things easy. Thank you for your work. Liz Read! Talk! 21:05, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz: oh, no problem, I forgot that Twinkle doesn't do that by default for G6 (probably because in most applications it would be unnecessary - but for nonsense in template-space it probably makes sense to do so). Elli (talk | contribs) 21:40, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz: investigating further - Twinkle doesn't support notifying for G6's that aren't copy-and-paste moves. I'll see about making a custom template for this. Elli (talk | contribs) 22:31, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

I reuploaded my map that contained the blue and red for the two respective states. IMO, despite your colors being official state colors, the colors chosen are, while also official state colors, are more prevalent among Americans thinking of each state. Thanks.

Reopen page move request
Can you reopen this Talk:Racism_in_India#Requested_move_2_July_2021 request? I was going to cast a detailed vote today based on the strong consensus earlier which debunked the current title. Can you help again?
Hi Elli, I need your help again. I just made some new templates among which are these three: {{Party shading/Text/Democratic}}, {{Party shading/Text/Republican}} and {{Party shading/Text/None}}. You can find their usage here: [1]. Basically, it is a template that shades a table cell with the party shading colors and returns the party name as text, however a customised text may also be produced by using the first (and only) parameter. I made them to reduce article sizes and reduce the chances of committing mistakes in tables, i.e., mismatch of colors & party name. Can you please add a documentation like in most {{Party shading/Democratic}} type templates, categorise them accordingly and also change template names if required. Actually, I don't have much experience in categorising these type of templates. Thanks. Cheers! ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 14:13, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: sure thing. I've actually been looking at this whole field of templates for a while - a lot of significant changes are needed - but I'll make sure these are dealt with reasonable in the meantime. Thanks for letting me know! Elli (talk | contribs) 18:22, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- It's good to know that you're working on this field and are likely to take care of these items. So, I'll continue to use of these where needed. And maybe I'm being a bit picky, but I was wondering if {{Party shading/Republican/Text}} makes more sense than {{Party shading/Text/Republican}}, provided that the background color is just {{Party shading/Republican}} and the former option will make it a subpage of the actual party shading template. Any thoughts? ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 19:17, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: I think that might make a bit more sense. But as I've said, this field is a bit of a mess (we have two separate trees - ever seen the /meta/color templates?) so just do what works for you. Elli (talk | contribs) 19:18, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: I think I'll rename them so that they remain as subpages. And yes, indeed a mess, you know I frequently get lost in the maze of those decades old templates. Again, thanks for weighing in. Have a nice day. Cheers! ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 19:28, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

saving to draftspace
Hello, I need some help. How do I save the articles I'm working on directly to draftspace? All I see is publish which puts it in the main space which I don't want to do until the article is in better shape. Thanks!
Klippi74 (talk) 16:26, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Klippi74: thanks for asking. When going to start an article, go to Draft:Title you want, not Title you want. Then, when you start it, you will be starting it as a draft. Later, you can move the page to be published as an article when you feel like it's sufficient, or submit it through WP:AFC if you would like more review (though that process can take a while). Invitation to a RfC on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Elections and Referendums
Hi Elli, I would like to invite you to a RfC started by me on RfC: Convention for House of Representatives special elections in the United States. Please leave your suggestions if you're inclined to. (You are receiving this message because CX Zoom spotted you on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Elections and Referendums and thinks that you'll be interested to participate in the RfC.) Thanks! ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 16:10, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: thanks for the invite! I already left a comment though :P
- Thank you for trying to straighten this out btw. I'm not opposed to change at all, but I'm not too certain about the way to do it, so I wanted to start by expressing my reservations. I do think that potentially splitting out content could be useful - but again, inconsistency.
- Well, there is more inconsistency (2016 United States House of Representatives election in Montana vs 2017 Montana's at-large congressional district special election), but good luck getting that resolved unless you want article titles like 2020 United States House of Representatives special election in Wisconsin's 7th congressional district... yikes! Elli (talk | contribs) 16:16, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: Whoa! That was a pretty quick reply I'd say. Thanks for replying. Now, I'm not sure why would we be required to name a article with so long a name. I believe special elections have all used the format [year][constituency/district/riding][the words "by-election" or "special election"], and that could pretty much be included as a convention in WP:NCELECT, since special elections not just in US but also around the world use the same format like in UK. This is understandable, since only one type of election to ever be held in Wisconsin's 7th congressional district: congressional ones, and that goes without specifying. For 2017 United States Senate special election in Alabama, I think its important to mention the office name first because Alabama's upper house is also called the Senate. In articles where ambiguity may exist articles are named such as 2020 Toronto Centre federal by-election. Maybe we could all come to a perfect naming convention through RfCs. ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 16:55, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: this is true. I don't want another mess of an RfC until I can think of a convention I'd be happy with.
- While we tend not to have articles for these, there are MMDs in state legislatures - and some states used to use them for congress too. So I'm not sure if it's perfectly not-ambiguous. Plus, inconsistent. Elli (talk | contribs) 17:05, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: While state legislatures' usage of MMDs should be a real concern, I don't think it would ever have a practical effect on Wikipedia articles, as state legislative special elections never get an article of their own. They always wind up being in articles like 2021 United States state legislative elections#Special elections. ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 17:12, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: this is true, the challenge for me was coming up for names for election boxes (which should use the same names as an article would use if it existed), as well as election maps (which also need a pseudo-article name, see what I've been working on on Commons). Elli (talk | contribs) 17:16, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: Hey, I think you'd then need to rename the cartograms I uploaded a few months back- File:2020 US House Election Results cartogram.svg and its 2018 counterpart, since the cartograms should, by that logic, be named as "2020 United States of Representatives elections results cartogram". Thankfully there are just 2 cartograms I've made so far and it won't take long to rename them and their svg code too, if required. ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 17:36, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: oh, there are thousands of files to rename. I'm working on Senate races first. Elli (talk | contribs) 17:36, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: They simply didn't have a naming convention until recently on Commons. Plus Commons is rather
disorganisedunorganised than English WP. See for example the congressional districts map area on which I had been working lately [2]. Every time a new map is added, its added with a different naming convention. I would've renamed them to my naming convention (because my ones use names that are derivable from their respective articles' names), if I had the File mover rights, but I think I won't get them thanks to the files deletion warnings on my talk page, due to the naive me boldly uploading files on commons during my initial days on commons. smh. ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 17:52, 15 July 2021 (UTC)- @CX Zoom: I know. I'm the one who set up the convention :P

I think it'd be great if you shared your thoughts on the talk page (Talk:2021 United States Capitol attack#Article is not too long). — Alalch Emis (talk) 12:21, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Alalch Emis: thanks for the mention. Vacation is nice! I've taken a look but I don't have many thoughts to share at this time. Elli (talk | contribs) 13:19, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
Participation in a signpost interview
Hi Elli, hope that you're well and enjoyed your vacation. I was wondering if you'd be able to participate in a Signpost interview in your capacity as a member of WikiProject Redirect? I am enthusiastic about these interviews because they help remind other Wikipedians about the passionate and diverse group of volunteers that edit Wikipedia, and into the many discussions and editors that inhabit our space, nooks and crannies. If you had time to even answer a few questions here (User:Tom (LT)/sandbox/WikiProject redirects interview draft) I'd be very grateful :). Tom (LT) (talk) 08:15, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Tom (LT): sure, I'm a bit busy right now but I can try to answer some questions certainly. Would you like me to just answer them on that page? Elli (talk | contribs) 13:20, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, yes please. Much appreciated! Tom (LT) (talk) 20:57, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
