Karimunjawa national park

Hi Elekhh - I just created a new national park of Indonesia article: Karimunjawa National Park. Still few pictures, need some more pics. I am waiting for a response from some of my contacts. There is an article Karimunjawa referring to the archipelago, but the info is a mess, and I don't know where do they came up with such information. • That's great work again! So good too see the topic evolving. I would leave the archipelago article separate. While based on lenght it could be merged, it is likely that in the future, as both articles grow, it would be split again. Similarly I opted for separate articles about Bunaken National Park and Bunaken island. I haven't had time so far to review it in detail but will do soon. Certainly is worth nominating it for DYK. Hi, I noticed your comment on the above VPC. What do you think would be the chances of the picture at FAC? I noted that you said the background was "so colourful that is somewhat distracting", however I'm not sure this is an important issue because of the nature of the castle (or rather the nature of the debate surrounding it). The landscape around Bodiam Castle is arguably just as important to the site as the stone walls, and all part of the display. I have no experience with WP:FPC and may be missing other obvious flaws but think it's a nice image. Nev1 (talk) 21:58, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply Elekhh. I know very little about the technical side of images, but I may well nominate the photo for FP; there's nothing to lose and I should at least gain some understanding of the process. I think asking along significant contributors to articles in which the image appears is a good idea. For instance, when I chose to use the above image as the lead it was because in my opinion it captured everything important about the site (as I tried to convey in my support rationale as I can't really comment on the technical side). In some cases there may not be people actively working on the related articles, but it makes sense to check. I only stumbled across the VPC by mistake (I think I found a notice on the image page). The general english grammar and sense issues makes me hesitate, hes already had enough to go to his head on - having photographed and researched the place and using ricklefs work from the 70's I am very picky - and if it wasnt cut for time I would have things for almost every line - but hey the big problem is usage of derivative folkore material - it cannot be proved one way or other so the javanese have field days with inventive etymology - and legend - they play with it for various cultural and political agendas - and leave the average outsider none the wiser for what they are up to - brilliant stuff that is known as sandi sandi more opaque than my non handing the hungarian language when I was in budapest a few months ago :( SatuSuro 01:11, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Proposed Navbox template: Protected areas of Chile

Greetings! I noticed you're the only contributor in recent years to any one of Chile's 3 Navbox templates regarding the Protected areas of Chile (Parks, Reserves, Monuments). Before I even realized they existed, I created a much more inclusive (and much larger) Navbox in my Sandbox. I hope it's not too unwieldy, since I would like to go around replacing the other 3 and apply it to all the existing pages. Tegnestuen Vandkunsten

Hi Elekhh! A (long) while back you made a comment on the talk page of Architecture of Denmark that Tegnestuen Vandkunsten probably ought te be mentioned. Sorry you didn't get any response back then, it was certainly a both relevant and productive suggestion, but Ipigott has been very busy with a tour de force of Danish photography and basically I don't think anyone has been watching that page since it got its good article status. I think you are right that Vandkunsten probably warrants ention, when I didn't include them originally when putting something together on contemporary architecture, it was because they didn't even have an article and neither do any of their works. I would like to expand their article-stub a bit and put a few lines together for Ipigott to add to the Architecture of Denmark article. What I would mention them for is that they were proponents for a break with modernism and the use of residential highrises back in the 70s, instead designing low but dense residential developments inspired by traditional villages and placed in and well integrated with (semi-)natural surroundings (e.g. Tinggården). However, I'm not an architect and would very much appreciate your comments on what to add, should you have any, both in their dedicated article and in the general article. Particularly, are there any particular styles/-isms/trends their work relates to? If you are aware of any good English-language sources, preferrably online of course, I would also appreciate a tip. It always surprised me that they got the Aaalto Medal for while I know they are excellent and respected architects they haven't exactly made the most high-profile buildings, nor done much work abroad, and it is very impressive company to be in – which tells me there might be something I have missed. Changes to Pritzker Prize images

Hello Elekhh. I noticed you're changing the images on the Pritzker Prize featured list. When I first added the images, I had to be sure they complied with the freedom of panorama for each country. Can you confirm that the replacement images you've used can safely be used under this act? Thanks! (And I meant to add thanks for adding work that may better represent the architects. • Hi The Rambling Man, thanks for your concern and vigilent monitoring of the page. You might have noticed that I've been working on several Pritzker Prize winning architects' articles recently. I changed 3 examples in the list, which were not really representative works and I believe the new examples are better. These are from Japan, Germany and USA, all countries with FOP for buildings. The problem countries are France and Italy, hence the choice of examples for J.Nouvel, A.Rossi, C.Portzamparc and R.Piano will remain limited. I don't intend to make further changes at this stage. "Architecture of Luxembourg"

Hi again Elekhh. I've decided to return to architecture for a while. I am presently working on Architecture of Luxembourg. As you may know, I have been living in Luxembourg since 1973 although I spend an ever increasing amount of time in Denmark as my wife is Danish.

Every time I look at the mechanisms for including an article in DYK, I am discouraged from going any further. It all looks so complicated. But I know you are a master of such things and might like to help once more.

I suggest something along the lines of:

• DYK that the architecture of Luxembourg can be traced back to the Celts long before the Romans arrived on the scene? You could include the Titelberg image perhaps.

Or maybe you will find a clever way of introducing the current boom with realisations like the Philharmonie concert hall? -- Ipigott (talk) 18:34, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

High Ipigott, I'm very glad your interest is back to architecture, and happy to learn more about Luxemburg. I nominated quickly the article for DYK (here) since time was running out, but improvements or alternative hooks would be still possible in the next days. I included the Titelberg image as well, but I think is more likely the hook will appear without an image since it's not that powerful. I was about to try an alternative hook with contemporary architecture as suggested, however I discovered that Luxemburg has no Freedom of panorama and thus, unless "incidental", images of buildings by architects which were still alive 70 years ago are generally asumed to be copyright protected, conflicting with Wiki Commons policy. So I'm afraid your very nice image of the Philharmonie might be challanged and deleted one day (as so many other valuable images from France and Italy)... which is a real shame. I did a small expansion on recent developments, but I found it really hard to find material on the net. Hope to be more lucky in the future and am happy to contribute to the article. Advice about peer-reviewing on Wiki Project Architecture

First of all, thanks for the images you added to Junzo Yoshimura and Kunio Maekawa for me.

I was going to do some copy editing on the Toma T. Socolescu article at WikiProject Architecture to correct the English usage. The article itself is very long and has a warning to that effect at the top of the edit page. Before I commit the time to correct it, are there in your eyes wider issues that the article should address? (I'm still quite new to this) Kenchikuben (talk) 09:44, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for taking this on! It seems to be a well researched article, certainly written with a strong determination by the editor (apparently a family member) mainly committed to this single article, but no other wiki experience. He's writing the French version in parallel, in a very similar manner. Without looking in detail I would expect a broad number of MOS issues. Some of the most apparent ones are: absence of proper LEAD (should be a more complete summary - min. 3 paragraphs), some unreferenced paragraphs, text which could be prose presented as bullet points, a dizzying use of imagery (IMO), probably too many external links and of course the prose. The article is not too long, currently only 18K real prose (mainly the biography part), however probably double that if the architecture section is reworked into prose - which is still not too long. The overall appearance could be shortened by collapsing some of the notes and maybe removing some of the images. So I wouldn't be too afraid of any prose being deleted after a copyedit because of overall article size, however I would start providing some hints on how to improve key MOS issues prior to do the copy-editing. Was a real pleasure, and I am happy to see modern architecture articles improved. The GA review indeed looks promising. It's not always as easy as now, when dozens of reviewers compete for dozens of prizes... :). You can keep it on peer review if you wish to try to bring it further to FA. Otherwise there are three steps to remove the article from peer-review: (1) simply remove the peer review template from the article's talk page. (2) move the peer review to the archives (simple copy-paste from here to here), (3) remove the entry from the architecture bulletin list. If you feel there is need to improve any of these pages, to provide better navigation and instruction to participants please follow WP:BOLD. I refactored part of the poll to hopefully adequately reflect that there is a third option that people wanted under one of the sections. Please review the current state of the section and change your contribution as you see fit.

Adding new options as I have done is the suggested way for the poll to proceed, and I think the degree of differentiation we now have is roughly what we should be aiming for - not too many different options so we can still see some consensus developing, and not too few so that people can find an option that reasonably approximates what they want.

Thanks for the hint. I'm aware of that and tried out commons Valued Images in the past, but I find the process a bit bizarre in terms of determining the best image "in scope", where the scope is totally abstract... The English Wikipedia VPC has a much more clearly defined aim and criteria, even if less participation and exposure. --Elekhh (talk) 23:23, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for that. I think it is apparent that one of my main sources of information was written in 1970! I'll try to get newer source material and update as you suggested. Kenzo Tange Hooks

I appreciate you've probably got better things to do... but are either of these hooks any good: DYK "that the plaza in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was designed to allow 50000 people to gather at the monument in the centre"; or DYK "Kenzo Tange's Tokyo plan would have facilitated the movement of 2.5 million people along a residential axis projecting out across Tokyo Bay". (Perhaps I should stick to architecture and stay away from headlines!!). Also, I've tidied the article up incorporating the notable buildings within the main text, added a section on the Tokyo Government building and added a little to the Legacy. I don't have very good access to books for this latter section so if you have anything you can add then that would be helpful. Thanks Kenchikuben (talk) 21:46, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Haha, take it easy, is going to be displayed only for 6 hours and read by a few thousand... Note that the fact does not need to be quantitative (i.e. something like ...is known for combining traditional Japanese styles with modernism... is also a fact if appropriately sourced). Also the hook needs to have a bold link to the article. I would go with a hook which can relate to an image given that images attract more readers, hence the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is better, and anyway probably a more succesful hook for Wikipedia's predominantly US readership. That would make it something like: "...that the plaza in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park designed by Kenzo Tange allows 50,000 people to gather at the monument (pictured) in the centre". --Elekhh (talk) 02:43, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Athens Charter

After seeing your tag about the sorry state of the Athens Charter I had a look at it and think that it's something that I can expand in the future. At the moment however user Suwa talk has added a different topic to the page under the title Athens Charter for the Restoration of Historic Monuments. Suwa agreed that they would be happy to split the article into two, possibly with a disambiguation. Do you know how to do this? Is it an administrator task? That would be nice! Disambiguation is relatively easy (and not and admin task): see WP:DAB. The tricky part is to decide which article (if any) is a primary topic. I tend to think that the 1933 CIAM could be primary, however I might be biased :)... and maybe is better if both are treated as equaly important (as in the German Wiki). So maybe best would be to make a proposal on the discussion page for spliting the article, and leave it open for discussion for a week or so. --Elekhh (talk) 12:47, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
