Charlottetown-Parkdale

[edit]

The 2016 mix proportion referendum results were not implemented & even if they were, it would've been adopted to all 27 of the PEI legislature's seats, not just Charlottetown-Parkdale. So again, I don't see the reason why you're placing it in that one article. GoodDay (talk) 15:04, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Which of the Ontario & Quebec provincial districts, list referendums? GoodDay (talk) 15:14, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've opened up a discussion at WP:CANADA, concerning this topic. GoodDay (talk) 16:33, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you fixated on that 1 district? Wouldn't it best to put that 2016 referendum in the Next Prince Edward Island general election article? GoodDay (talk) 16:15, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Very well, seeing as the others are in favor of it at WP:CANADA? I've restored your addition. Hopefully, you'll fall through & add it to the other 26 districts, too. GoodDay (talk) 16:31, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW - You've forgotten 4 districts. GoodDay (talk) 04:26, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Possibility of providing your input on a Peer Review for Regine Velasquez's entry

[edit]

Hi Earl Andrew,

I'm writing to ask whether you would consider having a look at the article. I'm aware that you've been involved with a few PRs before. I've given it a major rewrite and complete overhaul. I began working on the article late October when it looked like this and somehow ended up rewriting the whole thing and aiming for potentially FA. This isn't a process I've been through before, but I have been reading the reviews here in preparation, and am familiar with FAC demands. I would very much appreciate a fresh set of eyes and happily address any concerns you may have.

Thanks! Pseud 14 (talk) 13:29, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 2017 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sarah Potts (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

OK, create it as a draft, and I will move it. I've been holding out on creating it myself because I haven't been able to find a full roster of the teams. -- Earl Andrew - talk 21:53, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Strong man" delete curlers bio stubs

[edit]

Hi Earl! Can you explain to Boleyn about sources for curlers? I can't. He/She deleted/moved_to_draft number of stubs (or non-stubs - including "Victoria Moiseeva") I created. Look on my talk page, themes "Sources" and "A page you started (Marlene Albrecht) has been reviewed!" and "Ways to improve Malene Krause" and "Moved to draft". -- Alexey Gustow (talk) 07:14, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian English

FYI, this edit at Harrington, Quebec causes {{convert}} to display an error message when the page is previewed, and a warning when saved. The only valid option is |sp=us which gives "meter" instead of the default "metre". Please delete |sp=us if "metre" is wanted. Johnuniq (talk) 22:11, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Standard Wikipedia practice is to exclude title sponsors from the article titles of sporting events like this. Thus we acknowledge the Ford sponsorship in the lead but not as the article title. ViperSnake151  Talk  02:54, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Could you provide a link to that policy? I have seen other sport articles that contradict this. I understand that WP:OTHERTHINGSEXIST, but the sheer amount of exceptions leads me to wonder. Also, we have to follow WP:COMMONNAME, which in the case of many curling events is up for debate. I'd rather we discuss the matter at WP:CURLING before unilaterally moving articles. -- Earl Andrew - talk 13:40, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Knot

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you reverted my removal of thenkot.com (a wedding registry) on a BLP that is being used as a source to state that x married y or changed their name, which is in direct opposition of WP:BLP and WP:RS. Could you please clarify? CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 17:44, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I didn't realize it violated RS. But you also removed a reliable source (a media guide) on one of the articles I reverted, which attracted my suspicion.-- Earl Andrew - talk 17:47, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"Home Hardware Media guide" with no other information is meaningless as a source in the absence of other information and a quick google search shows as much. I also noticed you didn't live an edit summary on either explaining why. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 17:49, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I will add a proper reference then. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:50, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed you added the media guide reference back by claiming it is a reliable source. Can you please provide proof of that because I can find no evidence that it is and as it's a BLP the onus is on the person adding it. The existence of something (which I can't even verify in this case) is not inherently reliable and no where in WP:RS does it indicate media guides are inherently reliable. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 17:54, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also it's not a media guide, it's a brochure for a curling event. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 17:55, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It is actually a media guide. Not sure why it wouldn't be a reliable source, since it's published by the national governing body of the sport in the country. -- Earl Andrew - talk 18:00, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a bit concerned about your understanding of reliable sources as it relates to BLPs, particularly here as you've changed the name of the article on the basis that she married someone which is WP:SYNTH of the source (which is improperly sourced) as you're assuming that she's a.) changed her name because she got married, b.) is going by that, even if she did and c.) there is no evidence she has changed or gone by that name as all of the RS refer to her by her maiden name. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 18:08, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not assuming she would change her name (that would go against everything I stand for as a feminist, but that is neither here nor there), she did, but I agree a better source on that would be needed. For now, the reference for this is her World Curling Tour profile, which is under her new name. -- Earl Andrew - talk 18:11, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
According to what source? Every search I did only referred to her AND her partner but never her as Selena Njegovan. Please move it back and open a discussion when you find a reliable source. This is a massive BLP violation. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 18:13, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally the media and reliable source largely refer to her by her maiden name of Kaatz, so per WP:COMMONNAME that's what it should be. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 18:14, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Here is her World Curling Tour profile. I am aware of WP:COMMONNAME, but considering she is an active curler, her "common name" will soon be her new name. At what point would you suggest we move the article? -- Earl Andrew - talk 18:16, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"Soon will be her new name"? Says who? If it happens in the future, it will be moved then but until it's reported in reliable sources, it should remain Kaatz. There is not a single instance I can find of her being referred to outside of a profile as Njegovan. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 18:18, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also not trying to be flippant so my apologies if it comes off that way but the BLP issues are of great concern. I'm also not particularly sure how much editorial oversight this is subject to. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 18:21, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW she is also listed under her new name for next month's grand slam event. I understand your concern, but in my opinion this is an obvious case. The references may not be ideal, but I'm not aware of the World Curling Tour making a mistake in this regard. Teams register with the tour under the names they will be using for that season. -- Earl Andrew - talk 18:25, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Media Guide

[edit]

We may need to have larger discussion somewhere, perhaps on WP:RSN, on whether curling media guides are considered reliable. As these affect many biographies of living persons, this is very concerning if we get this wrong. Bradv 18:07, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies for assuming that a media guide published by the national governing body of a sort was not reliable. Especially considering the media uses these guides, and news organizations that use these guides are often considered reliable. -- Earl Andrew - talk 18:13, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I would see media guides as primary sources rather than secondary sources, as they usually contain information submitted by the participants. We would presume that the media and news organizations would do some fact checking of their own, which is why we typically depend on them for information like this, especially when it concerns living people. Bradv 18:17, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that makes sense. My interpretation of that policy is that primary sources are OK, but secondary sources are preferred. -- Earl Andrew - talk 18:20, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In general, yes. But when it affects living people we need to be extra cautious not to introduce wrong or poorly-sourced information or to do our own analysis or interpretation. At least that is how WP:BLP has evolved over the years. Bradv 18:30, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. I will try be more thorough in my adding of primary sources to BLP articles, so that they are not as poorly sourced. -- Earl Andrew - talk 18:36, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
