Hello

  • Hello, I'm glad to see you are making some new Finland-related articles, we need more of them on this Wikipedia. Thanks for creating the Liakanjoki article, and hope you can make more as well. Happy editing, EJF (talk) 11:16, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
You are welcome! And thanks to your message. --Platoon11 (talk) 11:20, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

A query about population figures for NI villages with <500 inhabitants

Hello there, I am planning to add population statistics to Ballyronan. As the NINIS site only holds statistics on villages with a population of over 500, I was wondering for example, how you got the population for Killinchy. Derry Boi has suggested contacting them directly; did you email NINIS with a Freedom of Information request? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, EJF (talk) 23:00, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi EJF. All the info I got is from the Ninis website (which doesn't appear to be working today). Under 500 inhabitants doesn't appear through queries, but there is a list (possibly a pdf list) somewhere on the site detailing those under 500. I will have another look when the Ninis site is up again and see if I can find it. Ardfern (talk) 14:05, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, the site is down I think due to hacking as there was a BBC report on it. Hopefully it will be working soon! Thanks for offering to help, EJF (talk) 14:17, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

No problem at all! I feel honored when someone cites or quotes me. I makes me feel like I've said or done something worthwhile. Further up that page are quotes from others. I only borrow from the best. Cheers, Dlohcierekim 18:46, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

My RfA

File:David,larry.JPG My RFA
Thank you muchly for your support in my recent request for adminship, which was successfully closed on 76%, finishing at 73 supports, 23 opposes and 1 neutral. The supports were wonderful, and I will keep in mind the points made in the useful opposes and try to suppress the Larry David in me! Now I'm off to issue some cool down blocks, just to get my money's worth!

Kidding btw. All the best, Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 11:28, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

You keep beating me to the punch - I'm starting to get annoyed ;) Tiddly-Tom 18:54, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Thank you very much! You still are beating as well sometimes, I installed Huggle 30 minutes ago and I'm getting to grips with it; at least during the time I spent writing this you should have got some more reverts :) Regards, EJF (talk) 18:59, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

"Support, I view self-noms as prima facie evidence of having balls." Good stuff. Enigma msg! 07:37, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

I think Kurt deserved it ;-) Good luck to anyone who decides to self-nom to enter the fiery pit of RfA, given the cut-and-paste oppose they can expect... EJF (talk) 08:25, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
It's pretty obnoxious. I've seen it on several of the RfAs I've participated in (usually as the first and/or only oppose), and I was reading his Talk page, the archives, and the RfC on him. Did you see this? Enigma msg! 08:36, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Oh, I'd heard of it but never bothered looking for it; it looks like funny stuff, I like the last line of DropDeadGorgia's comment - probably not too far off the truth... The fact that arbitrators like Newyorkbrad are speaking up at RfAs and his talk page makes me hope that it will stop, but I don't think it will. As long as the candidate isn't too sensitive, I'm sure most noms take it as a joke! EJF (talk) 16:46, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

I have self-reverted. I reverted your first edit as on first glance it had appeared unconstructive and because you previously had received warnings. Have a nice day, EJF (talk) 18:13, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Go raibh maith agat for the (bot accomplished?) reversal of vandalism/personal attack on my talk page. -- House of Scandal (talk) 18:09, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

No problem! I use the Huggle tool, it's very good. Regards, EJF (talk) 18:12, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Please take a look at User talk:147.4.160.116 and the history of that page. Thanks. --House of Scandal (talk) 18:26, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for alerting me to that. I restored the warnings. I know that WP:BLANKING says that user warnings shouldn't be restored to a user talk page, but as it is an IP (and doesn't own the talk page) I reverted the removal. Regards, EJF (talk) 18:37, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

vandalism

  • Hello, I assume you saw the vandalism on my talk page with Huggle? Thanks for cleaning it up, I've been under fire recently becuase of the anti-vandal work I do. I now have your user/talk page on my watchlist, I do it for all who revert vandalism on my pages. You've helped me out, so I'll look out for you. Its how I work. Thanks again. Steve Crossin (talk) 18:22, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Yes, Huggle is great and thank you :) Due to your own extensive work already on Wikipedia, looking at your talk page, I look forward to visiting RfA in early June :) Regards, EJF (talk) 18:37, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Oh yes, I love Huggle, the only reason my edits have been so low to increase today is because I have not used Huggle at all today. I decided that I should take a break from fighting vandalism, and do something, like improve some articles. I also reviewed an article, something I've never done before. Re the RFA in June- You would support me in an RFA?!? Not now, obviously, but then? I assumed no-one would vote for me in an RFA, ever Steve Crossin (talk) 18:59, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I've only started fighting vandalism again 2 days ago when I installed Huggle - I used to, but I had decided to try my hand at other things like XfD, RM and new page patrol. I'll probably do some more Huggling today and tomorrow, and then take a break to avoid burnout. I hope you enjoy improving articles - I hope to write 2 or 3 soon, but I don't really have enough time to research and write at the moment, vandal fighting is more time-effective! With regards to RfA, with a few months more service I am quite sure that many people will support you - and that your admin coach will guide you well. Thanks, EJF (talk) 19:31, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

65.183.69.212

Hi. You recently warned that IP editor for vandalism to the Lewis Latimer page. Do you feel that after a final warning and a block, the counter should be reset to one when the contributor goes back a few days later to the same article and adds nonsense [1], rather than giving a longer block than the last one? Thanks. Edison (talk) 19:17, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello, in that revert and warn I was using Huggle and I will report this as a possible error here. That said, the edit does not appear to have been egregious vandalism, and I personally would not leave a level 3 or 4 warning for an edit such as that given the (small) possibility that it may be a different user than the blocked user. Of course, I would think that on the next unhelpful edit a level 4/ level 4im warning would be appropriate due to the blocking history of the IP. Regards, EJF (talk) 19:31, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I am concerned about the counter getting reset to zero after a block. This editor vandalized the same article he had been blocked for vandalizing, making it implausible that it was a different editor. I do not see an amnesty as appropriate. Regards, and thanks for your efforts. Edison (talk) 22:54, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

[2] Total respect to you for that. It's not that I don't agree with your opinion, it's just as I said, kind of, unhelpful. Thanks again. Pedro :  Chat  23:16, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Well, on second thoughts it appeared somewhat disrespectful to Kurt's opinion (which he is entitled to), and more so to the candidate. I appreciate your concerns entirely and feel that my comment was regrettable. Sincerely, EJF (talk) 23:20, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
A fine way of handling it IMHO. Still, won't be long before your name appears here I imagine ..... ? Pedro :  Chat  23:41, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Enter the bear enclosure? - I'm happier to comment! I don't know, if I ever did, maybe 4 months time. To be honest for the moment I'm happy enough speedy-tagging, AIV-reporting, RM commenting, AfD-commenting and closing some keeps; and supporting admin candidates that will do these things! I'm gathering some sources and planning to perhaps try for a few DYKs in the next few months, I would like to do that. As for anything else, I'm happy enough to do what I can to help! PS I am disappointed the "draft Pedro for RfB" campaign was unsuccessful - you have good judgement. Regards, EJF (talk) 00:00, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
Heh - I'm a long road from RfB me!!. However you're not so far away from RfA (if you want it). Not now, certainly, but give it 8/10 weeks. Don't burn out on HUGGLE and keep helping with the article writing. If you want a nomination, hit me up when you feel ready; my only codicile is this - I won't nominate unless I'm 100% sure so please don't be offended if I declined to nominate. Hit the content creation, keep up the work at RFA XFD etc., keep on doing what you're doing, and I'd be suprised if you didn't sail through... the buttons aren't that special but they do help! Pedro :  Chat  00:26, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately it looks like a busy weekend, so by the same token I can't see much participation in any namespace (indeed I think I'll use the Wikibreak Enforcer to ensure it)! However, I'm getting some holidays from next weekend onward, so I hope to participate more, especially at AfD. And I'll try my best with the content, even if I don't get much time to write (which I think I will) I'll do some more clean-ups like this and add images and infoboxes etc. which is relaxing and fairly non-controversial and do some WP:NIR work. Thanks for your advice and I'll bear in it mind - I suppose it could help to have an another admin from Norn Iron as there aren't very many, we're definitely the least represented Home Nation! Cheers, EJF (talk) 11:45, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Vandalitics form 216.100.95.90 + 24.116.252.151

Do you have an automatic bot, which can immediately revert vandalism? That would be helpful if you use automatic bot to fight vandalism. His last block is 390 hours. Thats the school IP directory of Orange County I think. Yes, most IP is used for vandalism, and let me know if any IP vandalises any page. I will notify the admins.--Freewayguy (Webmail) 00:21, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

From the vandalitis of this anony, the tak link is still maroon, does this user deserves any warning?--Freewayguy (Webmail) 00:54, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes, you were correct to warn User talk:24.116.252.151 for his vandalism. Normally when a user has vandalised we use a {{uw-vandalism1}}, {{uw-vandalism2}}, {{uw-vandalism3}} then finally a {{uw-vandalism4}} warning. If the user keeps vandalising after this, we report them to AIV. I am not an administrator, so I cannot personally block users.
I do not personally run a bot which reverts vandalism, I use Huggle, which is very useful for removing vandalism and warning vandals. No vandalism from those users at the moment, so hopefully that will have been an end to it! Regards, EJF (talk) 11:01, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Riana's request for bureaucratship

Dear EJF, thank you for taking part in my RfB. As you may know, it was not passed by bureaucrats.
I would, however, like to thank you for taking the time to voice your support, despite concerns cited by the opposition. Although RfA/B isn't really about a person, but more about the community, I was deeply touched and honoured by the outpouring of support and interest in the discussion. I can only hope that you don't feel your opinion was not considered enough - bureaucrats have to give everyone's thoughts weight.
I also hope that the results of this RfB lead to some change in the way we approach RfBs, and some thought about whether long-entrenched standards are a good thing in our growing and increasingly heterogenous community.
I remain eager to serve you as an administrator and as an editor. If at any point you see something problematic in my actions, please do not hesitate to call me out. ~ Riana 12:16, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

AfD for PEI Media

I left the following comment at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PEI Media When you search for the brand name Private Equity International, rather than the company name PEI Media, you get better results. Don't feel disheartened or beat yourself up about it; it's OK, lots of admins failed their first RfA. Take a break and evaluate, and come back whenever you feel you're ready. We need you — there is still a lot more vandalism than there are Hugglers :) Best regards, EJF (talk) 23:45, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Wellington College Belfast

Hello. I recently tried moving the page Wellington College, Belfast to Wellington College Belfast (the Belfast is part of the school's name) by cutting and pasting the contents of the first page to the second and by adding a redirect to the first. I now know, thanks to you, that this was not the right thing to do. I should have used the "move tab." I'd like to do that now but I can't see that move tab. I was just wondering if you'd be so kind as to move the article for me. I'm new to editing and your help would be much appreciated. SuperlativeHors (talk) 13:17, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Hey EJF, thanks for your support on my recently unsuccessful RfA. RfA matters

Indeed, no, you were not one of the editors I was referring to. And by the way, I changed my vote to "neutral" once Martijn acknowledged he had made an ill choice of words with his "boiling under the skin" remark. I'm not looking to be mollycoddled here, and if someone disagrees with what I do I'm always happy to talk it over. What's dispiriting and discouraging, though, is the utter lack of humanity, of compassion shown by some here -- note for instance the individual who twice said I've "unmasked" myself, and three times said my vote there "basically guarantees" any future RfA of mine is bound to fail. So if six months or a year pass and I make no further "controversial" edits, then that one vote - justifiable and soon changed - will outweigh all the good I'm sure I'll do here until then. It sort of lets one down, I think, though I'll try to get over it and move on. Biruitorul (talk) 16:33, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
