Remove the stench

Disinfectant attached to a befouled RfA process

This might be useful. Bongomatic 04:23, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

  • Hey, I just had a quick look at Clifton's Cafeteria--nice! Of course, I didn't check to see if your punctuation was plagiarized or not, which is entirely possible. I didn't know it was featured in On the Road, which I read long, long before I ever came to the US (and so many things didn't make sense to me, but it did make for a different and probably valuable reading experience). Speaking of new things, I went to a baseball game tonight, for the first time in my life. The mascot, Big Mo, even came to our box--unfortunately just as my oldest daughter was on the playground, and the five-month old didn't seem to care, haha. But the fast food (and the fried chicken with biscuits and white gravy) was pretty good, and fun, since I never eat that. And I had a couple of beers with my colleague, and forgot all about stuff for a couple of hours. Drmies (talk) 04:30, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks again

Try this.

As I promised myself I spent Sunday with my family, drank too much beer and even hosted a last minute BBQ (sorry you couldn't make it). I even managed to take a friend of mine to school in Mario Kart. I want to thank you again for nominating my for adminship in addition to all the other support you provided. As for my justification for withdrawal, I felt that the examples provided by BuddingJournalist/TwilligToves showed me that I need to focus on my content contributions before I am ready to branch out in other areas of responsibility. While my opinion was that Ottava's examples were taken out of context (as I showed), the larger ones were not. The decision was not based on whether or not I felt I was in violation of any policy or guideline it was something I felt was the right thing to do. My primary focus here is content and I need to have that down before I can advance further. As I explained I felt that Ottava's examples were enough to point out that I had some work to do but not enough to hang me from the proverbial yardarms. This is in regards to two issues (1) WP:PLAGIARISM was only promoted to a guideline on 20 May (or about 11 days ago), so I feel it is a little early to claim people are in violation of it (since nobody actually did say I was in violation of it I did not bring it up, but I felt the intention was there) (2) as you have stated (and I will bring up again), the definition is far too ambiguous to be used in any discussion regarding an editors actions, and based on that alone in my opinion the guideline does not hold water. I appreciated Ottava's assumption of good faith and his going neutral following my efforts to correct them. I am not sure which way the actual RfA would have gone if it had fully proceeded, and truthfully right now I do not want to think about it. Now I have some serious matters to get to, as I recall there was a request from Bongo to have an article written about some bug, and now that this and the bacon challenge are over I can get back to improving the encyclopedia, which is all I ever wanted to do. I am glad you got to a baseball game, I was at a Reno Aces game a few weeks ago, good times and a great park (brand new too). If you are in the area let me know and we can catch one. Cheers and happy editing. --kelapstick (talk) 16:19, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

K, you are a nice guy, and a much better man than I am, I think. I agree absolutely on the two issues. I felt like tanking the whole WP thing, but there's too much work to be done. But right now I'm focusing on only one tiny little thing, one article, and am leaving the rest for what it is--I'm sure that won't be forever. (I did make some minor edits to that Barrock mine article, but didn't feel like removing the template yet--I don't want to appear to spiteful, and besides, who knows what the guidelines are?) As for BBQ, that's always a good thing. I enjoy cooking it more than eating it, haha. I got some hickory from Publix; earlier, I used scrap oak from various carpentry projects. Thanks for the note. You know you have made a ton of friends here on WP--just look at the list of names of supporters. Take it easy! Drmies (talk) 16:39, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

As far as I can tell there aren't any Dutch bands that are notable. I hope that helps. ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:59, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
Tell that to Shocking Blue. Hey, Applejack might be less not-notable than I thought. I don't think there will be enough, but who knows...if they win The Next Stage this month in the Melkweg... Drmies (talk) 05:02, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't have anything helpful on the shelf, although I may be able to locate something. (There's a book I haven't had a chance to check yet.) I have weighed in on the AfD, and I think the consensus is strongly in favor of notability. — ℜob C. alias ᴀʟᴀʀoʙ 16:17, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

  • Thanks Rob. Yeah, the status as a historical building ought to be enough, but I am also interested in seeing the article fleshed out a bit more. It is a beautiful, beautiful building. Drmies (talk) 16:31, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Speaking of the Netherlands, I forgot to tell you that I watched a whole segment on European Journal about the collapsing pension system in the Netherlands. And it seems they are pushing back the reirement age to 67. Folks who bought into Al Gore's lock-box lie over here are likely in for a much worse surprise when they realize Uncle Sam has saved not a penny on their behalf. Good thing we shot down those personal accounts... ooops I mean "PRIVATIZED" social security system. Egads! :) My local weekly did a feature story on "bacon bits" including J&Ds lip balm, a car that runs on bacon (BioBlend Fuels) and the BA-K-47 from thisisfreakingridiculous.com. So the end will have to wait until next week. ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:41, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

  • Yeah, I'm sure the Dutch are terrified at their coming doom, and will be running to apply for American citizenship. At least here you know you don't get jack! (Not even Applejack.) Maybe Uncle Sam can try to retrieve some of those cargo planes full of cash that dropped their contents on Iraq during the previous administration. Hey, I saw the AfD for the list of bacon dishes--funny how bacon really brings out the carnivores in a lot of WP editors! Drmies (talk) 21:46, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Those planes have been diverted for Obama's war games in Afghanistan. Here's a link for your weapon of choice [5]. And here's the EJ story [6]. ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:50, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Nice! Looks a lot better than my standard issue. Oh...Afghanistan...yes...I forgot...where we were fighting the "war on terror" until we started fighting the "war for Halliburton and Blackwater"... Drmies (talk) 21:57, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Pfff. That's German news. It couldn't possibly be true. Ha, did you see the GM ads on TV, arguing that this is only the beginning of a new kind of car industry? This is getting too serious--time for football season to begin. Drmies (talk) 21:59, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Didn't the majority leader in the Senate declare the war in Iraq lost some time ago? Government Motors is indeed the beginning of a very new car industry. And they're trying to implement the same operational structure on health care and the rest of the private sector as well.  :) Football? We still have a ways to go. I wonder if your QB and Auburn's DB will make teams... Stay cool. ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:16, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
When you guys are done talking politics and football can you swing by User:Kelapstick/Samuel L. Jackson filmography and see how it looks (same request posted on Bongo's talk page too). Only Love Can Break Your Heart

Please stop removing the cover version from this article. "Some other band" (Saint Etienne's) version is notable enough to be included and to have an infobox, as it charted as a top-40 UK single and a number-one U.S. dance single. Song articles within Wikipedia include original versions, as well as notable covers and/or remixes. If you are going to make such a huge, sweeping change to an article, please take it up on the Talk Page first. Thanks. - eo (talk) 18:04, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Well, I don't think that it is against policy to keep them together; in fact I can give you a zillion examples of song articles that include more than one version of the same song.... although I'm sure you've seen quite a few throughout WP. I will, however, (if you'd like) assist in beefing up the Neil Young portion. I do agree that it is extremely lopsided (that extensive track list section probably isn't imperative) but that's not a reason to spin off the Saint Etienne part. - eo (talk) 20:01, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Hey Eric, I'll keep it here, so we don't have to go back and forth all the time. The way I look at it, the Saint Etienne version is a spin-off, and so the article should be too, and, as I mentioned before, it deserves its own article. And part of the problem, besides the lopsidedness (which could be solved by editing and writing), is the double set of infoboxes, which I find confusing and esthetically not very pleasing, and the somewhat strange set of categories. Again, it seems to me that the article is about a song, by Neil Young, on After the Gold Rush (and the infobox should be, IMO, for "song" and not for "single"), sure, with one of those "for the hit by Saint Etienne, see etc." lines at the top; and a no.1 hit single should get its own article. Combining them suggests that the Saint Etienne single isn't notable enough in its own right to have an article despite having been a no.1 hit. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 20:13, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
I do see the point, but I look at it this way: an article is about a song. Someone writes it, records it, puts it on an album, releases it as a single, has a hit. Lovely. Someone else records their interpretation, has another hit with it. And so on. All of this is part of the history of the song. i.e, in a perfect encyclopedia (I'm dreaming here) there would be info on the inspiration of the song, what went into recording it, maybe some chart info.... then (below) more on what made Artist #2 choose this song to record, how it was produced, etc. (all this assuming of course it meets notability guidelines). I think breaking things up causes more confusion. I do know that, years ago, this kind of thing got wayy out of control with articles being made about every cover version and remix out there (for example there was an article for Whitney Houston's version of "Star Spangled Banner" and Christine Aguilera's "Christmas Song", two songs covered by approximately 50 billion artists). So per the naming conventions at WP:SONG, all of these articles marked as "(single)" were combined and named uniformly with "(song)". As far as the infobox is concerned, I do see how this could look gaudy to some people, but that's (I think) something that could be taken up in a different discussion with editors who would want to improve the look of infoboxes to make them flow better. Neil Young's version should have a single infobox because, well, it was a single. Saint Etienne's should also be there — both versions have varying degrees of success in different realms of the music world, no?
Take a look at some of these and just tell me what you think: granted some of these may also be "lopsided" but most of the time the combining works quite well: I Love Rock 'n' Roll, The Passenger (song), Venus (Shocking Blue song), Valerie (The Zutons song), It's My Life (Talk Talk song), I'll Be There. - eo (talk) 20:40, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
I see your point. That's not to say that I agree with you, cause that's not the kind of guy I am! Thanks for the links; I'll have a look and will get back to you. Drmies (talk) 20:56, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

RE:How about this one?

The current templates on those two articles don't really deal with plagiarism, but with copyright violations, which are different and require admin attention (our copyright pages are policy while our plagiarism page is a guideline). (By the way, do you understand the difference between our copyright policy and the plagiarism guideline? Not meant to be a condescending question, but a legitimate and sincere inquiry [the two are confusing at times, I know]. It just seems that from my previous conversations with you, and your latest message on my talk page, you're mixing the two.) This is because all content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with GFDL, even old versions of articles. Therefore, if there are any copyright violations, admins peruse the history of the article and delete the contributions that contain them. These templates are part of this set process, and I would be wary of touching them. I've never been a fan of how big and scary they look, but I assume it's due to the legal implications when dealing with copyvios; they were created long before I joined WP.

I believe the reason why editors are cautioned not to do further editing on the pages is to just make life easier for the admins who look into the articles, so they don't have to do more work in making sure revisions are free of copyvios. In any case, an admin should be along shortly to deal with these two articles. As stated in the instructions, anyone can continue working on the text elsewhere, such as a subpage in the talk namespace. Does that help?

By the way, if you can point me to a source that actually legitimizes the whole "citation but no quotation marks is OK" point of view, I'd be much obliged. I've seen some other editors too hold this point of view, but I still have no idea where this comes from. No definition/discussion of plagiarism I've encountered considers this to be OK. TwilligToves (talk) 01:35, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

  • I am aware of the difference, yes. Since neither of the two articles were simply copied from the sources (the charge at the relevant RfA was, I imagine, that they were too close to copyvio to be called legitimate paraphrase) you'd have to make a case for why they would be copyvios, and the answer suggested, though not provided (you were never explicit), was "they're too close to the source.". That can only mean that they are not paraphrased properly, but the yardstick for "proper paraphrase" is quite unclear. (WP:copyvio doesn't specifiy.) And by the way, I never said "citation but no quotation marks is OK." I was talking about attribution and every source I've ever looked at (see my comments elsewhere) makes lack of attribution essential in the charge of plagiarism. That I talk about copyvio and plagiarism side-by-side is because a. they are related (no matter whether one thing is policy and the other guideline) and b. plenty of participants in the RfA accused the candidate of plagiarism (see Durova's comments, for instance).

I note, by the way, that at the RfA you actually didn't specify what the issues were, precisely: you gave two sets of two passages, and I concluded that you meant to say that they were too close, so close that they should be called copyvio. But that also is a judgment call, and while I freely admit that in my opinion some (though not all) of those passages should have been paraphrased more in the author's own words, the rhetorical power of the copyvio template, which (and I repeat myself) I believe was applied unjustly, was such that the RfA was hijacked, in my opinion. Your use of ellipsis towards the end of your comment is telling in that respect. And that is why I said what I said. While I don't want to make light of the problem of copyright violations, I am still not convinced that that was what we were dealing with here--and we were certainly not dealing with plagiarism. Rather than ask me if I know the difference, I'd like for you to address my charge: that all-too-close paraphrase (a matter of judgment) does not automatically add up to a copyright violation, and that your pasting COPYVIO all over this candidacy helped damn it. Drmies (talk) 02:20, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

  • OK, for a moment I thought you were actually being serious on my talk page, but instead it looks like you're out here to bait me with your passive aggressive attacks. It's not going to work. TwilligToves (talk) 02:46, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

I can confirm that there is some duplication from [9], as with "the first simultaneous start-up of an underground and surface mine in Nevada", but I don't know what needs to be cleaned from the other source. Lacking access to it, if I am left to address it (and can't find somebody who can access it), I'm not going to have any option but to rewrite or remove the article. Can you help? No, I can't undelete a copyvio. The article was listed for a week as per process to allow contributors an opportunity to address it, but unfortunately nobody did so, and the copyright infringement was foundational, going all the way back to the first edit. There was no clean version to revert to. If you'd like to create a stub, I'd be happy to give you any non-GFDL infringing elements from the page, including categories or external links. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 01:22, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

All right. I'll prop them in your userspace if you'd like. Note that I did also offer the template-blanked version back for a few days at Bongomatic's talk page. I don't know if you read the template, but you are welcome to revise the article in the temporary space if you'd like, alone or in tandem. That stands for this one as well. All that matters is that problematic text be dealt with. If you have any questions about paraphrasing, I'd be happy to help you. I suspect you know quite a lot more about this subject than I do. (Sorry for parking on your talkpage, Drmies. :))--Moonriddengirl (talk) 01:45, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
No that's fine--if I knew y'all were coming I'd made you coffee and baked some cakes. What is this, the first chapter of The Hobbit? I did make some edits to Cortez, but then I read the template again and undid them. I looked at it one more time and now I think I know what I should have done...too complicated for me. Anyway, I'm happy--we're all on it, the article will be back in good shape, Shadow and all them found their way home (though my daughter was still crying cause he hurt his paw), my daughter is in bed, my phone-laptop-Bluetooth connection miraculously started working, and the coffee is ready. And the mall is safe from crime, I imagine. MRGirl, you're welcome here anytime. Drmies (talk) 02:00, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Ha! Kristin Hersh! Haven't thought about her in forever. I used to have a tape (yes, a tape) of Hips and Makers, with that creepy song with Michael Stipe. (That article needs a good scrubbing.) Guess I'll have to dig that up now, and find my old Walkman. Drmies (talk) 02:04, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Having the template blanked version would be good, but either way is fine with me. I see Bongo commented on his talk as to a location. It is most appreciated. Also I will take a look at the offline refs of Cortez Hills tomorrow and make sure they are not in violation. I think I have the magazine on my desk still (under a large pile of paper). We watched Bedtime Stories last night, well worth it. Rock on.--kelapstick (talk) 03:35, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
All right. It is so userfied. I appreciate your looking into the Cortez Hills article as well. I now have access to the material, so I can help as needed, but it is not my area of expertise. Editing, on the other hand, is (not Wikipedia; I mean it in the general sense), so please don't hesitate to let me know if you've found something you can't figure out how to put into your own words. Nevermind what I do with it off-Wiki, I've been doing it on Wiki every day for almost a year. :) Linguistics Rubic's Cube. --The Legendary Sky Attacker 01:23, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

What did you read? Anything good? Do tell! I barely hear from you any more now that KBC2009 is over. So sad... ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:40, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
That's cause I'm often on recent changes these days, and you never edit on anything but bureaucratic matters :/ I made a few comments on AfDs, and am doing cleanup on a couple of things. Well, another longtime contributor apparently left, an admin is threatened with being stripped, nothing new really. But it's always a bit sad to see WP editors yelling and getting worked up, on matters that often, from the outside looking in, seem trivial. Hey, I saw a minute of Chopped just now, and the loser seemed to have made chocolate covered bacon for his dessert. Drmies (talk) 03:13, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
I thought Blofield came back? Who left? I'm fighting for my Wikilife on bureaucratic matters kiddo. 1 revert per article per week? Which Admin is threatened with a stripping? Is it a cute one? I'll have to check out chopped. I'm thinking of setting up some sock accounts so I can become and Admin and get a seat on Arbcom. What do you think? Seriously though, none of this is trivial. It's all VERY important. They're trying to delete Auburn's 2010 football team before they even have a chance![10] Tough times for all of us. Cheerios. ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:19, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
And what happened to the Snake 'n Bake? I tried to tivo it but no luck. Is it gone forever? ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:21, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, Blofeld is back, but Stifle made a no-no, according to some, and Shoemaker's Holiday called it quits. And I didn't say it was trivial--I said it looked trivial from the outside. Our recent RfA adventures were FAR from trivial, but we were on the inside. And for Auburn: the biggest news there is the resignation of Bobby Lowder--and our article says nothing about the enormous amounts of gossip going around! And I don't know about Snake 'n' Bacon...I don't have that channel... Drmies (talk) 03:36, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Maybe you can help determine the future of Animal love (safe for work... at least last I checked) and Jesse Dee. Stifle seems to be more reasonable than ever lately, although I don't think I see eye to eye with the kid. I'll have to look into that.

"From trivial, but we were on the inside"? What kind of yoda-speak is this? Have you been hanging out with my main man GTB? I take it you are high on life? :)

Is 2010 this coming season or the following season? Anyway, "your" Lakers are were looking good so far. Not really a match-up that I find particularly interesting. Keep it real. ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:31, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

  • I assume you're being sympathetic. The commentators also tried to see the Lakers glass as half-full. My problem is that game 4 is played Sunday evening, and we're going camping in DeSoto State Park, and I don't know if we'll be back home on time. Drmies (talk) 15:58, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm VERY sympathetic. I hadn't realized they were playing last night, so I was commenting on the first two games until I found out they had lost. As success follows me everywhere, it won't be surprising when LA wins the championship. As for my Jets??? well... They're not much without me and Keyshawn now are they.ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:44, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Another 3RR issue over at death metal

One particular editor keeps reinserting the text regarding "brutal death metal" despite its deletion. They are clearly in breach of 3RR at this stage. Care to take a look? Blackmetalbaz (talk) 11:55, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Never was in mining, always a Piano Man. Actually I knew him long before I considered digging in the dirt. He's going to school in the Netherlands, music something, not sure how he got that gig put I would agree it is a pretty good one.--kelapstick (talk) 16:03, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Curious, what pages are affected? I've found Red Deer, Alberta, Red Deer the animal, and Red Deer (disambiguation), plus redirects to those pages. Warning templates

Not a dumb question at all. :) The reason it is confusing if because that template isn't meant to be used directly. Instead use:

{{subst:spam-warn|page|header=1}} ~~~~

where page is the page you placed the speedy tag on.

For convenience, the speedy template should have a ready made version that you can copy and paste near the bottom of it (after it has been added to an article).

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. --ThaddeusB (talk) 21:21, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Sure. I don't have the album here so I'll have to get back to you. The Nonesuch website has a little bit of information, but not what you're looking for, I think. There's a short paragraph for each song, and I'll see what it says. Drmies (talk) 17:29, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Hey, do you know why the iTunes version of Terry Riley: The Cusp of Magic has a seventh track? Do you intend to start an article on this CD at any time? Hekerui (talk) 20:18, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
No, I didn't know that--I hardly ever get anything from iTunes (in part cause I don't have an iPod, haha). I thought about that one, but the last couple of articles I wrote on Kronos albums I wrote as soon as I had bought the album, and Terry Riley: Cadenza on the Night Plain is the last one I bought. Feel free to start it--you know what, I'll start a stub. Drmies (talk) 20:24, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

There: Terry Riley: The Cusp of Magic. See the note for the tracklisting: when you buy the album from the Nonesuch website, you get the free MP3 download, which in this case includes that track. Nice! Drmies (talk) 20:38, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Nice new article! I wasn't aware of the tracklist template (not that the Lalit album needs it). As for Lalit, it's not a song but a raga and I thought symphonies don't get italics either (even though these two things have nothing to do with each other), and The Raga Guide doesn't use them, as does Sorrell and others. OTOH the book from Jairazbhoy uses italics, and another one from the 70s I know uses italics and doesn't capitalize. I simply choose what I liked better - perhaps someone else sees things differently and changes them, that's fine too :) Hekerui (talk) 22:09, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! As for the tracklist template, that must be a happening topic. See below, User_talk:Drmies#Revisions_to_Red_Hot_Chili_Peppers_albums_articles and User_talk:Drmies#Album_review. The latter section contains a link to an archived discussion that really downplays the importance of the template; I like the way it looks but I don't like other things--the lack of functionality of the "music_credits" entry. Now, since Lalit is the proper name of something that could be considered a song, a work, a text, whatever, it should have something that marks it as such, and all style guides (not necessarily every book that mentions a text, etc.) will agree on that. Since this is a major work, published individually (that is, one "song" on an album), by analogy with books I would italicize it--I typically follow MLA guidelines. Italicize it and see what it looks like: I think it will look better. Take it easy, Drmies (talk) 01:05, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

I gave Sam a bit of expansion and sourcing. There is lots more out there. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 00:07, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

  • Thanks. I did consider it, but the guy is a mayor and I don't know if that makes him automatically notable. If you look through the various versions, though, you'll see quickly why I considered it. Thanks, Spaceman; I'll add the page to my watchlist. Drmies (talk) 17:42, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I think being a mayor of a town of 25k people will probably get a pass from CSD, but he still doesn't qualify per either WP:Politician or WP:N from what I've been able to find, so I decided to PROD. -SpacemanSpiff (talk) 17:53, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

The Fame

Article is GA nominated where prose is what matters not unnecessary subheadings. --Legolas (talk2me) 03:46, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

  • And you decide what's unnecessary, I imagine. Anyway, if prose is what matters--do you really think the following paragraph is legible at all?

"Just Dance" was released as the album's lead single commercially worldwide on June 17, through digital distribution.[54] The song was critically appreciated with reviewers complimenting its club anthem-like nature and the synth pop associated with it.[16][17] It achieved commercial success by topping charts in the United States, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, as well as reaching the top ten in many other countries.[55][56][57][58][59] The song received a Grammy nomination in the Best Dance Recording category but lost to electronic duo Daft Punk for their song "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger".[60] "Poker Face" was released as the second single from the album after another song, "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" was cancelled as a single. It was also well-received by the critics most of whom have praised the robotic hook and the chorus.[61] The single achieved greater success that "Just Dance" by topping the charts in almost all the countries.[62] "Poker Face" became Gaga's second consecutive number one on the Hot 100.[63][64] "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)" was the albums third single in Australia, New Zealand and some European nations. The song received negative reviews. Some critics compared it to nineties Europop while the others criticised it for bringing the party like nature of the album to a halt and thus being an embarrassment to the album.[15] It failed to match the success of the previous singles in Australia and New Zealand by reaching fifteen and nine respectively. It peaked at two in Sweden.[65] "LoveGame" was released as the third single in the United States, Canada and some other European nations and the fourth single in Australia and New Zealand. The song was critically appreciated for its catchy tune and the "I wanna take a ride on your disco stick" hook.[66] The song has started charting and has reached the top ten in countries like the United States, Australia and Canada and the top twenty in others.[67] "Paparazzi" has been announced as the third single in the United Kingdom and Ireland with a release date of July 6, 2009.[68] However, the song charted on the charts before the release.[69] The song was appreciated for its fun-filled, club-friendly nature and is deemed the most memorable and telling song from the album.[23] The associated music video for the song was shot as a mini-movie with Gaga starring as a doomed starlet who is almost killed by her boyfriend, but in the end takes her revenge and reclaims her fame and popularity.[70]

BTW, try working on your edit summaries. Happy reading to the GA editors. Drmies (talk) 04:08, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

About Ginzburg

Are you sure that you didn't lay it thick? The facts that Ginzburg is the editor in chief of "Uspekhi" and is a chief of Academic department of MIPT you can easily find in russian wiki. Isn't that enough?Kap677 (talk) 22:48, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

  • Eh--what I can or cannot find isn't really that relevant. What you add to the English wiki needs to be verified, that's really all there is to it, especially in the case of a BLP. Now, that he is the editor of that journal, I just saw that--by going to the WP article on the journal (which is barely English, by the way) and then to the journal's website. Go ahead and reinsert that information--but with a reference to the proof on the journal's website, preferably nicely templated and properly formatted. But that atheism stuff, that needs evidence, which you didn't give. Drmies (talk) 01:34, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

That picture

Hey Doc, the thing about that picture, aside from it having the scary:

"Scan of original photo. Copyright © 2007 TRACshovel. All rights reserved. Unauthorized use is strictly prohibited."

on it, the status on flickr is indeed an issue. You might be better off emailing the company directly for a picture that they have and are willing to release (either on Flickr or directly here), sadly I don't know much about the emailing the picture in system, I think it is at WP:OTRS or something, I see it on pictures that have come from outside sources. I also don't think I will be around much, getting busy on the work front and don't have enough time to work on important subjects as I used to (mainly minor edits these days I think), but let me know if you are going to play Wolfenstein some time.--kelapstick (talk) 22:58, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

About Taslima Nasrin

Hi! Thanks for your tremendous interest in Taslima. But what makes you think that Islamic fundamentalists from Kolkata evicted her from the city? The chief of Kolkata's Baro Masjid, the main mosque of the city is the religious chief of Kolkata's 3 million muslims. As you can not call a bishop a cristian fundamentalists, you can not call the imam of kolkata an islamic fundamentalist. In fact you should be aware that kolkata is the most progressive city of entire South Asia and that the marxists are ruling there for last 32 years. Ok? I hope you can try to understand my point.Murad67 (talk) 10:23, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Hello Murad, thanks for your note. First things first: I have restored that term (which was in there in an earlier version) because, simply put, that is what the references establish.

There are a few issues here. First of all, that edit takes place in the lead--not that we should play fast and loose there, but a more generalized overview is acceptable. In the section that describes it more fully (and by the way, I really only edited those sections--I didn't write them originally) there is more detail which, I believe, is substantiated by the references given. There are anti-Islam comments, Muslim leaders, Muslim fundamentalists, and militant islamists. It seems to me that "Islamic fundamentalists" probably covers that pretty well. (And some bishops--not all, but some--are in fact Christian fundamentalists!) I am aware of the strange combination in Kolkata of left-wing leaders and extremist sentiment--a nice example of Realpolitik, I imagine. But here's the thing. If these Muslim fundamentalists and militant islamists are there and were responsible, then Islamic fundamentalists is a proper term, and you can't simply replace that without changing the more detailed discussion in the Taslima_Nasrin#2004-2007.2C_life_in_Kolkata section. Moreover, your edit suggests it was only in Kolkata that such stuff happened, but there was Hyderabad also.

Here's what I propose: a small edit to the lead, and for you to find the reference that establishes that a more moderate clergyman (is that accurate?) also called for her expulsion, to be added to the more detailed section. I looked through the references just now, and all I can find is mention of that All-India group, so we need additional evidence. I mean, I'll take your word for it, but it needs a reference. OK? Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:10, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I would think so too - I know that if I were to stumble upon the page for casual reading, I wouldn't bother trying to decipher what the paragraph had inside. Actually, that's what I did before I went to edit; I saw that and thought I should split it into seperate paragraphs. I guess I'll just wait for the review to see what is correct and what's not! talkingbirds 15:26, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Well, the reviewers won't necessarily tell you what's correct or not, just what they think looks or reads good--and one would hope that their way of reading is more or less the same as ours... I also left you a note to suggest, hey, if you think something is not right and you have good reason to think so, go ahead and change it (see WP:BEBOLD)--and don't allow yourself to be 'corrected' by what was really a bogus argument. Take care, and happy editing, Drmies (talk) 15:32, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

One more thing

Could you take a look at User:Kelapstick/Coeur Alaska, Inc. v. Southeast Alaska Conservation Council‎ (also posted at WP:SCOTUS) for the usual blunders? It was a HUGE ruling for the mining industry. Thanks. --kelapstick (talk) 19:10, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

  • I gotta say, K, that it looks pretty good, pretty clean. That's without looking at the three sources, mind you, and blissfully un-knowledgeable about those legal thingies! Good work my friend, and give my regards to the family. Drmies (talk) 13:32, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
... that following the Supreme Court's ruling on Coeur Alaska, Inc. v. Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, Coeur d'Alene Mines share prices increased by over five percent ? How is that for a DYK hook (it is up now, add another if you like), Bong, CoM and MZMcBride tweaked it up. Is Rosie's feeling any better? I had an ear infection once and I didn't like it much.--kelapstick (talk) 16:50, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
...that following a corrupt Supreme Court ruling that allowed evil ninja miners to poison God's creation, Coeur Alaska's share prices increased by over five percent? Hahaha. Yeah, she's better--antibiotics did the trick, and very quickly too since it was the first time she got them. Now Sippy has her Knoxville-cough (she was born in dirty air) again, though, and Papa is also a bit under the weather. Take care K! Drmies (talk) 17:22, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi.

Yeah, in fact it meets B criteria, as a matter of fact, the difference betwen C and B is sometimes vague, i rate it C because only has 2 sections of prose, but is well referenced, so i`ll make it a B and trust you will make it a better one to even GA soon; as for hints to upgrading the article, well, while the "spiritual music" section could be renamed to simply "background" i feel the second paragraph of that section truly belongs into the "critical reception" section and a production section would be really good, and if there was a tour for either artist, mention is also good, i think that`s good enough, if you need anything else don`t hesitate to ask. unsure why you are trying to promote your own standards in contrast to wikipedia.net's notability guidelines for living people. person in question has been covered by several credible news sources and the information, still being thoroughly researched and written hopefully without violent interruption, pertains to significant past political events in central florida. i urge you to discuss your concerns with an administrator or family member and not try to cast aspersions on the effort to reinvigorate florida (usa) political articles —Preceding unsigned comment added by Baxterword (talkcontribs) 06:25, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

  • Ah! Please put comments at the bottom of the page, capitalized and grammatized properly. You are referring to the article John Russell (Florida politician), no doubt. Well, as I've told you once or twice already, you could consider looking at WP:NOTDIR, section 7. Good day, and I look forward to the "report" you are going to file on me. My family members are, unfortunately, unavailable for discussion, and it would be nice of you to leave those out--you might, however, read WP:CIVIL while we await the administrators' verdict. Unsure

That is my first wiki page ever, not sure what I did incorrectly. Any help is appreciated. Couldn't pinpoint what was wrong in the "Things to avoid" section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ejoi (talkcontribs) 20:59, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

  • Well, it says "Please do not try to promote your product or business," and even if it's not your business, it sounds like it. It sure doesn't sound like an encyclopedic article. Worse, perhaps, is the fact that the text in the article was not written for Wikipedia; it's copied and pasted from some other source(s). Possibly the winery is notable and can be included, but not this way. I can't find a really good example of a good article on a winery; Hunt Country Vineyards is the best I could find. KitFox Vineyards is a bad example. Remember, an article on Wikipedia is to be objective and to have references from reliable sources that verify the information given in it. Good luck, Drmies (talk) 21:10, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
  • Okay. I'll update it. If the goal was to generate a general info wikipedia page, completely neutral, essentially could we use the text that we already wrote if we refined it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ejoi (talkcontribs) 21:23, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
    • I wouldn't do that, because copyright violations are regarded very seriously (it's not my 'department,' but I've seen how strictly they look at things, and rightfully so). The way to start is suggested in the "First article" page. Get the references together (practical tip: stay away from the company's own website, because it will influence you, even when unwittingly) and compose a rough outline of the article (in your sandbox--see WP:Sandbox). Don't put the thing up until it has basic text and references, independent of the company site. If you like, you can 'take' another article (like one from a winery) by copying it and putting your information in the right places, but make sure there's nothing left of the original. Now, since the article in its current state is a copyvio, I think it's best to wait until an administrator has looked at it and either deleted it or done something else with it. When you repost the article, make sure that you note, in your edit summary, that this is an entirely different version, not simply a copy. Good luck, and let me know if I can help some more. Drmies (talk) 21:33, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
    • Okay. I updated it and took out a chunk that I think we can agree was biased. I think what I'm trying to ask is, since we ARE representing Messina Hof, we ARE in possession of messinahof.com, so essentially could I use that information if it was edited to meet standards? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ejoi (talkcontribs) 22:03, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
    • Also, I see what you're saying about the references. --Ejoi (talk) 22:12, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
I found a cite for the title of second largest premium wine producer in Texas. I think it is best to rewrite it in the sandbox, let the original article be deleted and then move it over to the mainspace. --kelapstick (talk) 22:17, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

  • Ejoi if you have questions about releasing content from a website that you own the rights to for use on Wikipedia, I think user:Moonriddengirl would be the one to ask... In an ideal world, all the content would be sourced to independent reliable sources. But there's some fudging that goes on for non-controversial assertions. Certainly, photographs would be nice to include. Cheers. Don't let Drmies turn you off Wikipedia forever, Muahahahahahaha. Only kidding. But he is a jerk. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:58, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Having looked at the picture that's there, I would say the pictures should of the vineyard. Pictures of your friends are generally frowned upon. If it was a biography of one of them, or there is a biographical section, that might be an area where you could use a person's image in an article about a winery. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:00, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
I left that there, being somewhat in haste. A nice picture of the vineyard itself would be nice, yes. Oh, ChildofMidnight has been rumored to be[weasel words] a troublemaker,[citation needed] but as far as I'm concerned, he's the Messiah. Drmies (talk) 00:09, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
I am in the process of rewriting the page now. I am finding sites to support the accolades. Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo does not have an official website with the wine competition results, whereas wine enthusiast websites have the results indexed in a press release type article. Are these okay to cite? Also, those two are the owners and co-founders of the company, they are a huge deal down in Texas, not just some little winery with a few friends that I'm tossing up. I doubt anyone too far out there would have heard of them, but in Texas, everybody knows them. --Ejoi (talk) 14:55, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Revisions to Red Hot Chili Peppers albums articles

I made those edits on through a public IP as I didn't want to sign into my account since I'm not using a secured internet connection. Would you be able to elaborate upon why you reverted the revisions? They were made because the formatting is an unnecessary addition that merely takes up space. There is no guideline that requires their presence, either. NSR77 T 04:35, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

  • No, there is no requirement that they be included, nor a demand that they be removed if they are included. I left you a message explaining my reversals; the main issue here is that you did not, as far as I could tell, seek consensus to make these edits. I noted also that all of them are on RHCP albums, and all undid the work of one particular editor, and that strikes me as odd. As for space--well, WP is not paper, and they only take up some 800 bytes each. I hope this explains it well enough. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 04:40, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
  • I just saw the Hollywood sign on your talk page, so I guess that explains the RHCP part...;) Drmies (talk) 04:42, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
    • Well I'm a Chili Peppers enthusiast--their articles comprise my most significant edits. They were all on my watchlist and when I noticed an editor making the same edits to every page I was suspicious. I don't understand why I would need to seek consensus to remove them when the original editor did not seek consensus in adding them in the first place. NSR77 T 04:46, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
      • I saw that. And you did real nice work on the ones that I looked at. Look, if I see that an IP with a very limited set of edits is making a whole bunch of edits, all doing one thing and all undoing one editor's work, that's just not so righteous, esp. since tracklist boxes look nice (purely subjective, I know) and take some time to do (MrTaco's time, that is). No, MrTaco did not seek consensus either, but I think generally one would assume that such a change would count as an improvement, plus your edit summaries were a bit terse, and that's why I did what I did. Look, do what you wanna do, but don't be surprised if other editors take offense at such removals. At least a note on some talk pages can let you claim you sought consensus, and I think it's important to at least do that. Drmies (talk) 04:57, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
        • I agree. If the summaries were terse then I do apologize, but consensus is a double edged sword and one can't say that it is required to remove but not add. NSR77 T 16:26, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
          • Oh, I think you're right in principle on the double edge--but did you mean "forbidden" instead of "required"? I really think this would be an interesting matter to bring up at Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums, because it would be nice to get some kind of consensus from the project, which I'm sure is what they would like also--not all RHCP album articles have a star yet! (So you have work to do, haha.) I noticed that One Hot Minute, for instance, didn't have that template on 26 Nov 2007, when, after a lot of work by you, it got FA status. Still, we have those templates now and they are often used on FAs--how about you drop User:Cannibaloki a line? He's also on Wikipedia:WikiProject Discographies, and for a lot of articles I follow what he did (on Chaos A.D. for instance). (My apologies if I'm not telling you anything you don't know already.) Thanks for your note, Drmies (talk) 16:41, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Hey NSR, look below, at User_talk:Drmies#Album_review. I have no problems now with your edit (but next time, and I'll try to do the same, let's make lengthier edit summaries). Thanks, Drmies (talk) 22:07, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi. The cultural traditions part of the article is relatively long compared to other aspects of the city. I have not completely eliminated the cultural references but rather direct the readers into the new articles Pintados-Kasadyaan and Sangyaw. These two festivals are distinct from each other.

These cultural festivals are only celebrated two days in a year and form only a fraction of the over-all culture of its inhabitants. These festivals actually include participants from other cities and municipalities as well. While worth mentioning in the article of Tacloban regarding these festivals, it does not warrant writing full articles regarding these festivals inside the article of the host city.
Right now these two articles may be stubs but hopefully they will grow into full articles just like the other Philippine festivals. Other articles for similar festivals and host cities in the Philippines are separated as mentioned in Talk:Tacloban City. Proper labelling for splitting has been done as provided for Wikipedia:Splitting#Procedure.
If there is any copyright violation despite the reference [The text about Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 License.], I already corrected it in Pintados-Kasadyaan article. Please see revision history of Pintados-Kasadyaan regarding the tagging and removal of copy violations. I hope the issue will be resolved soon. Feel free to discuss things with me especially with regards to my compliance of Wikipedia policies. Thanks CC:Talk:Tacloban_City#Pintados-Kasadyaan/Sangyaw--Dihamsal (talk) 05:51, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
  • Hi Dihamsal, you saw my edit summary, I hope, about the consensus on the talk page. Such a big move should be made on the basis of consensus; please see WP:Split for some advice on how to do it, and you should be a little patient. I personally think that a separate article on the festivals is an excellent idea and I applaud you for that. But when you twice removed all that information, you did so without even leaving a "see main article" kind of thing, and that's also why both ClueBot and myself reverted. Go slow, that's a much better idea--or flesh out the festival article more before you cut such a significant section, as it seems you have done now.

As for the copyvio, well, I do see that license now that you point it out, though I myself am not exactly sure about the effect of such a statement--but I gotta say, licensed or not, copying is not the way to go, because the website is promotional and Wikipedia shouldn't be, and the website is NOT a reliable source on "the Spaniards" and other historical matters. I'll ask an expert, User:Moonriddengirl, to look into the copyvio, OK? Thanks for getting in touch, Drmies (talk) 16:00, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

    • Note: yes, you did leave a message on the talk page, and being WP:bold is fine--until other editors disagree, such as I did and others might, and that's the time to seek consensus. I added this as a note, because I didn't see your note on the talk page initially--you placed it at the top, and that's counterintuitive: most recent messages go on the bottom. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 16:02, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
Hi Drmies, Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems Moonriddengirl is suggesting that it is ok to delete the controversial portion together with the "possible copyright violation tag". I hope I could hear a second or third opinion from experts regarding this matter so that I or you or anyone else could make the necessary adjustment right away. Thanks for your concern.--Dihamsal (talk) 07:05, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Hey Dihamsal, the template says "Do not edit this page until an administrator has resolved this issue." Now, Moonriddengirl is in fact an administrator--perhaps she knows best what to do and can even take care of the matter. I'll drop her a line. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:04, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Oops. I'm not an administrator. Thanks for reminding me. --Dihamsal (talk) 22:30, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Nor am I! Please see her response at User_talk:Moonriddengirl#Tacloban_City. Oh, while you wait on resolution there, consider addressing the "gallery" issue on both pages. Any editor is free to walk by and delete them--they're tagged after all. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 22:50, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Is it possible to transfer the pictures to Wikipedia:Commons? Or do we have to request the author to upload to Wikipedia:Common. I'm, still doing some research regarding this matter and it will probably take some time for me to resolve the gallery issue. Kind Regards--Dihamsal (talk) 23:09, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Album review

By the way, though I don't often review album articles these days, it used to be a major project of mine. Since we'd just talked, I noticed when you lit up my watchlist at requested review. I took a look at your requested re-evaluation. I think it is very close to a B, depending on who evaluates it (and I do mean that; note that Juju Music, which I wrote, was rated a C because the infobox needed more info), but it is missing at least one important technical aspect as well as having a few minor issues that could bar a B grade. I've left notes in the template at Talk:Terry Riley: Cadenza on the Night Plain. They're in the album box and are viewable by clicking "show." :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:55, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

MRG, if I weren't married to my job (and my wife, of course!), I'd propose to you right here on the spot. Now, if you REALLY have nothing better to do, what do you think about Eliza Emily Chappell Porter? Drmies (talk)
I made some additions, following your advice. That tracklist template (and see the discussion above, at User_talk:Drmies#Revisions_to_Red_Hot_Chili_Peppers_albums_articles) doesn't do so well for me--that Riley composed the music was duly filled out there, but it doesn't show up as text. Wazzup with that? So I added it in a sort of haphazard fashion. The info from AMG is also available in the booklet: do you think that needs a reference? I'll get to the rest of your suggestions later--in the meantime, thanks again for your help! Drmies (talk) 21:38, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
If I weren't married to my husband and, well, Wikipedia I guess (I am somewhat disenchanted with my job), I'm sure I'd accept. :) I've never reviewed a biography article, but I'd say it's going to be a total pain going inline with those sources! Seems like the contributor is trying to do that, but doesn't know the wiki way. I've only used the tracklist template once or twice. I prefer the list method, as it's easier to edit, and I occasionally use tables. The tracklist template isn't really recommended by the project in ordinary tracklists: "A track listing should generally be formatted as a numbered list." Consensus at the project has traditionally been that straightforward lists should not be converted to the template without good reason. Would you object to my restoring the status quo there? :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 21:51, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, if that is the consensus, then NSR77 will be quite pleased, and that's just fine with me. Are the RHCP articles what you're referring to with status quo? If so, and you don't mind doing it, please--if not, I'll do it in a little bit (have to prepare for class a bit--by watching a scene or two from Brotherhood of the Wolf). Thanks! Drmies (talk) 21:55, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
Gasp Le Pacte des loups! I love that film! Hope you're not preparing to trash it. :D The tracklist template has been contentious. See this conversation, as a recent. It took us forever to come up with compromise language for even mentioning it in the guideline. :/ --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:02, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Starting Over

  • On my talk page, I have pasted a new version of the page. Can you give me some feedback on it in terms of meeting wikipedia's standards? Thanks. --Ejoi (talk) 21:50, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
  • Odd, for some reason it didn't post. Anyway, I got your message and am starting to add little bits and pieces of entirely reworked stuff for the page. Please let me know what you think and thanks very much so far for everything. --Ejoi (talk) 15:03, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
    • I don't know where you are working on what. I blanked the version in your sandbox; the place to work now is Messina Hof. Whatever expansion you do will have to be in line with WP guidelines, of course. It's fine to use the Hof's own website (I'm going to pretend I don't know you have anything to do with it--a conflict of interest is not necessarily suspicious, but it might be cause for more scrutiny) for such data as wine production or what grapes are grown, as long as the things that could be seen as positive are from objective, reliable sources (see WP:RS). For instance, if the NYTimes says their Beaujolais Nouveau is the best in the world, then use the original article from the Times rather than the summary on the website (which is the kind of thing you had in the first version).

Another tip: ask User:ChildofMidnight to help out; he has a lot of expertise with articles on food and drink and is a pretty decent writer, though he wouldn't be able to tell a run-on from a dangling modifier anymore than he can tell his Ayers from his arse--but he's a good person at heart. ;) Again, get a picture of the vineyard and grapes, that's what would really be in line with WP standards, I think. Don't overdo it--don't list every individual accolade. Trim down the history to a short paragraph or two, and refrain from doing too much biography on the founders: the article is about the winery, not about the persons, and the notability (the raison d'etre for the article, see WP:N) comes from the wine, not from the people making it. Good luck, and I'll check in occasionally. Unless, of course, I am delayed cause I found a case of Beaujolais Nouveau on my doorstep, haha. Drmies (talk) 15:18, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

I added an infobox, it is mostly empty, also I am unsure about the licencing on the logo, even if you (Ejoi), do you personally own the copyright for the logo (and the vineyard picture, in that you took the picture). If not the logo might be better uploaded just to Wikipedia as fair use. Also I am not crazy about this addition, mainly due to the lack of independent (or any) sourcing. I wonder if I can get Messina Hof in Reno... Cheers--kelapstick (talk) 15:28, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks K, for your comments and the box. I agree about the edit: it is certainly not appropriate either in tone or in lack of references; it is way too promotional, and I am going to delete at least one of the sections, "The Villa." I've made a few edits to the lead also, and to the history section. The Vintage House Restaurant section is likewise unverified, too promotional, and of limited encyclopedic value. The section on Paul B. probably needs to be cut altogether for reasons I outlined above. While some of these edits may seem harsh to you, perhaps, they have to be made to ensure that Wikipedia does not become (or sound) like a promotional database. Drmies (talk) 16:03, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Kelapstick, thanks for taking care of the talk page also. Drmies (talk) 16:04, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Many families in Laredo have cookouts during weekends. Here is a typical barbeque grill.
Tampiqueña Plate as served in many Laredo Mexican restaurants
  • I will get around to more sources later in the day. I have some other business that needs to be handled first. I've edited the bit about Paul to make it sound as appropriate as possible. I don't really think that deleting it is necessary. If I was to put the bed and breakfast, bar, and restaurant into one paragraph, would that be acceptable?--Ejoi (talk) 16:31, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
  • And we do have rights to the logo and I put up a picture of the vineyard. --Ejoi (talk) 16:57, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
The logo is fine to use. But the licensing on the image page (and perhaps at commons?) is wrong. It's not freely licensed. It's fair use. Surely you're not licensing the winery's logo for anyone else to use and copy and imitate? I don't think so.
As far as the biography section, has the owner/ founder been written about? If the content is based on independent reliable sources, then it is okay. If it's just from the winery's website or your personal knowledge then it can be challenged and removed.
Doc here is part of the liberal elite that fancies fine wines and the socialism promoting creative writing that passes for news in the New York Times, so I know he will be helpful. He's even barbecued a time or two, but I'm not sure he and his Toyota Camry would fit in around Laredo. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:48, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
If it is fair use it is can't be at the commons (only here), and I think it is a Prius, not a Camry. --kelapstick (talk) 17:56, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I wish, K--but unfortunately I work at a state institution, and all my tax money goes to the military and to exempting business from financial obligations so there isn't much left for me! A Camry it is, for the next 150,000 miles at least. BTW, that food looks delicious. Drmies (talk) 18:37, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Tsk tsk tsk, how are you going to live up to CoM's expectations if you aren't driving a hybrid?--kelapstick (talk) 18:46, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Doc follows the Al Gore school of environmental policy (do as I say not as I do). And I'd like to point out, all joking aside, that the Camry may soon be the last car that is actually made in America. The future doesn't seem bright for the economy or Government Motors, as its new CEO, Barack Obama, and board of directors, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, don't seem to know much about financial oversight, operating a car company, or balancing a budget... No wonder so many people are drinking heavily. :) Will a bottle or two be included in with our cheese and peanut butter rations? ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:29, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
The previous operators of GMC didn't know anything about financial oversight, operating a car company or balancing a budget either so it should be business as usual!--kelapstick (talk) 21:40, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
How typical of Kelapstick to rain on my parade with his sensible comment. I would counter with something about how they were doing okay until the Feds and their Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac operation hit the skids, and that it's tough when you have nonsensical union contracts, or when the 750 billion dollar economic bailout is nothing but more government spending, but Doc has heard it all before. What's a little thing like double-digit unemployment, run-away inflation, and a collapse of the dollar among friends. Let them eat cake! Right Doc? ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:51, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
You think that the sub-prime mortgage crisis and failing banks are to blame for domestic automakers inadequate products and lack of innovation going out of business? The big three were going down long before any financial crisis, this just "sped it up". Spot on with the union contracts, I know several employees of "The Motors" that I would not let wash my car, let alone build. --kelapstick (talk) 23:00, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
I think the products made by the US auto manufacturers have gotten pretty competitive, despite the legacy costs and corrupt unions. But yes, the economy and financial crisis sent them deep into the red and bankruptcy (after Obama threw tens of billions dollars at them first) by crushing auto sales and other big ticket durable goods. The companies will need to be reorganized based on much lower annual car sales in the U.S. And given the energy policies that are coming, it's going to get a heck of a lot worse before it gets better. The airlines, the restaurants, the solvent banks, and many other private enterprises will be soon to follow.
After the massive bailouts of the crooked businesses that were funding the Democratic politicians onto victory in 2006 with truckloads of campaign cash, there's not much left for the honest big or small business and their employees. And the printing presses propping up big government aren't going to be able to run like this forever. Madoff, Harold Raines and the other crooks at Bank of America, Citi and AIG who were shoveling campaign cash to the Democrats to keep their operations going without any oversight have really done a number on our economy. Best send a thank you note to Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:46, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
  • The owner has been written about. How would I go about changing the licensing? And thank you again for all of your help! The BBQ looks excellent, and the Prius would fit in fine with MY Camry. --Ejoi (talk) 18:44, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Not sure about the commons, I don't spend much time there, but there is probably a deletion criteria that it will fall under. What I would do is request deletion at the commons (probably by putting {{speedydelete|reason}} on it) and reupload it here, but that is because it is the only way I know how to. --kelapstick (talk) 18:46, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Doc, I got us a pic for the Kees Christiaanse article. Can you sort out what this [16] says and add something on the building to the article? Unfortunately, it's not written in the international language. ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:26, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Early night for you? FYI, check out Gerrit Rietveld [17] photo of his work from 1924 if caption is to be believed... And I may be able to get a photo for this fellow's article Rene van Zuuk. And what about this of those crazy Dutch [18] and Mart de Jong [19]. This photo is nice [20]. What about Frits van Dongen [21] (sounds a bit German...) Maybe some of these characters have articles on the infamous Dutch Wiki? ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:12, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Sorry CoM, I totally forgot about you and your Dutchies. Long day, then I got carried away by the instant gratification offered by Recent Changes. I'll get on it, I promise. Drmies (talk) 05:15, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

No worries Doc. Can you make sense of this [22]? I guess it should be reverted, but it seemed interesting somehow, like a puzzle. You can work on new changes patrol or whatever. Kees and I will just struggle on and do our best without your help. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:06, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh and have a fun weekend. God bless, freedom, BBQ, blowing stuff up and all that. ;) ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:17, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Awww who wants to look on the Dutch wiki. They might already have deleted Kees, for all I know and care. So listen, my neighbors are going to a little town south of here this afternoon, to their Church of Christ family's 4th of July party--where they will have hot dogs, and then hamburgers, and then steak, all while they have a half a dozen whole pigs cooking for the 4th... But no alcohol, haha.

So I tackled a couple of your requests, but have not yet created an article for Frits. (I did create a redirect for Nieuwe Bouwen--look at the state of the article it leads to...I did not create one for Nieuwe Zakelijkheid, since that is much more than just architecture--see Ferdinand Bordewijk, where it isn't even mentioned!). OK, gotta sign off, happy 4th! Go and worship at the altar of Ayn! And tell Sarah Palin thanks for her service! Drmies (talk) 21:32, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

I noticed you deleted this: "He designed the "Zig-Zag" chair in 1932 and started the design of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which was finshed after his death." What's the story vandal? I think it's funny that you talk about your neighbors going, but not you??? Are you staying home? What's going on there? Boiling peanuts? It's nice and cool here. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:49, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
No, we're staying home. We have some people coming over tonight for board games, and tomorrow we're going to friends and then to see the fireworks downtown. I'm taking my gun and my Ted Nugent CD, of course. It's cool here also--in the nineties, hahaa.

I didn't delete that passage; I moved it. Are you blind? Or just mesjoggene? The article needs a lot more, and I'm really glad you got the ball rolling--thanks! Later! Drmies (talk) 23:06, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Re: vandalism-only IP

Hmm, this is where IP blocking gets a bit tricky. See, IPs typically change on a regular basis, so we can't guarantee the person who vandalized a couple weeks ago is the same person who vandalized today. I usually consider warnings more than a couple days old to be stale. Nonetheless I'll keep a close eye on it to see what happens. Cheers, –Juliancolton | Talk 05:03, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Your eyes and your opinion please...

In a recent rescue of The Legend of Gator Face, I purposely left numerous redlinks and explained why on the article's talk page. I completed the article for Marilyn Vance and have pretty much fininished one for Alan Mruvka, only to find that User:BioDetective2508 already had done so as I was about to go live with User:MichaelQSchmidt/sandbox/Alan Mruvka. I am exceedingly pleased that someone is following up on the talk page suggestions, and I will write him to speak about bringing my version over to his. But in the meanwhile, I'd like to have you give my version a once-over. Thank you, MichaelQSchmidt (talk) 06:22, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Ahh... never mind and have a great 4th. If you happen to stop ny the Alan Mruvka article, you can see if I missed any typos. Best wishes, MichaelQSchmidt (talk) 20:29, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
Sorry MQS, I've been a bit busy (and what time I had I spent napping...), and even now I log on and have to run right away--to celebrate this holiday of course, with homemade ice cream. Were you in the parade? My daughter rode her bike in our parade--what fun! Later, maybe tonight, Drmies (talk) 21:21, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
No problem... at you conveniance. I actualy think the article is now darn good... better that start even if not GA. CoM came aboard and made some minor tweaks. Oh Ann, "Jews need to be perfected,"[1] but you don't...

This is the last warning you will receive for your stalking of Ann Coulter. She's not interested. If you continue to pursue her you will be blocked. ChildofMidnight (talk) 07:52, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Doc, doesn't Christianity teach that people have to accept Christ in order to be saved and that baptism is a process for the absolving of original sin? So wouldn't it be accurate to say that process is one of perfecting people, modeling them in God's image or something like that? It is rather strange wording to say anyone needs to be perfected, but you seem to be unhappy with Christian theology. Have you considered writing a stern letter to the Pope? ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:29, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Ha, I don't think that's what she was trying to say, really. The odd thing is that such a phrase would come from this person in America. I personally think that a lot of people need a lot of work toward perfection, and I also think that Christian theology is probably unhappier with me than vice versa--such break-ups are rarely clean. Oh, on another American note, there was a party in the park here, and fittingly, on the 4th of July, the band was playing some raunchy rock 'n roll with really loud guitars. Nice! BTW, we had dinner with my Jewish colleague (they don't like Ann a whole lot either), and they made Mediterranean food, but we had blueberry cobbler to duly honor our nation's birthday. Drmies (talk) 02:16, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
  • See Christian perfection. And have you been to church lately? Because last I checked most of them preach that everyone who doesn't accept J.C. is going to a very hot place, and I'm not talking about Aruba. It always seemed a bit intolerant from a loving God. You'll no doubt be happy to know that the church of CoM has no such policy. But I don't know if it's fair to take out your religious intolerance on poor Ann Coulter. :) She's just passing the word along, such as it is. The religious fraternity system really puts pressure on its members to stay in the fold, and is often aggressive in recruiting. JOIN OR BURN IN HELL FOR ALL ETERNITY is a heck of a recruiting tool. And Islam isn't too fond of infidels either. I know it makes it rough out there for the atheists. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, and not much peace on earth. See you in heaven buddy. Cheerios! Let me know if you want me to pray for you. ;) ChildofMidnight (talk) 07:06, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

re: Dickinson

The possible confusion that could arise stems from the usage of "her family" in the previous sentence. All members of her family may obviously be also referred to as Dickinson (even Carlo, I suppose ;) ). "Emily" is used various times throughout the article for differentiation, beginning as early as the very first section; it has nothing to do with familiarity, or a perceived first-name basis -- it just makes for easier reading comprehension. Hopefully this makes sense. María (habla conmigo) 15:12, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

  • I've seen "young Emily" and "Emily Dickinson"--I didn't see "Emily" though I didn't re-read the entire article. Oh, I see now you are Yllosubmarine--I just left you a note. To me, it suggests familiarity since I didn't see (and still don't, sorry) the confusion. I've just read that too often in student papers. BTW, the article is excellent, though there is one thing I'm missing: a note on or mention of the 1981 edition of the fascicles (which reminds me: my birthday is in August, and if you wish to see a grown man cry, you can guess what to get me for my birthday). Perhaps I'll find a place for it, or maybe you can. Thanks for your comment. Drmies (talk) 15:53, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
    • Sorry to cause more problems, but I've reverted some of your edits to the refs; the "References" section is meant to only include works that are used as sources, and are therefore not meant to be all inclusive of Dickinson scholarship. There are literally tons of books and articles available, so rather than create list-cruft, we decided to limit the list to works that were explicitly used. The 1981 edition of the fascicles is obviously notable, but it isn't used as a source. Also, the addition of the citation template conflicts with the bare-bones setup we have with the rest of the refs. Please don't feel discouraged from editing the article, and sorry if it feels like I'm policing you. ED was a labor of love, so I tend to take its FA-status rather seriously. :) I'm not sure what you're referring to regarding "the missives" sentence, however, could you elaborate? María (habla conmigo) 17:24, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
      • Well, "Sue" didn't strike me as appropriate for "Susan Gilbert." The section I did a little bit of work on was called "references" and not "works cited," so I thought that some very basic titles would be appropriate--I mistakenly thought these sections were also meant as a bibliography of E.D. (which is why I went to the article in the first place, to find a bibliography outside of what my Norton gives me), given that there is no section giving a bibliography outside what I now realize is the works cited, and given that there is no Bibliography of Emily Dickinson. As for listcruft, I hope you noticed that I didn't just drop in any Barnes and Noble edition, but only the fascicle edition and the authoritative editions of the letters. I see you also reversed the templates, use of which is encouraged on Wikipedia, I thought, and which work was to be seen as a step toward getting away from pure-text references (I'm a bit surprised that FA editors don't seem to care for them), and I don't rightly see how they might "conflict"--the use of templates doesn't even show in the text.

Don't worry about causing more problems--I can see that I need to leave well enough alone, and as for feeling discouraged or policed, well, this is an encyclopedia, and my personal feelings aren't very relevant. Good luck, Drmies (talk) 17:41, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Re: Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)

The fact that including the information, "Nicole Wray performed the song before..." is not an act of vandalism. Now, youtube was added as a source before I got there, and in the video they credited Laurent Gbagbo as the "Head of State". So you might wanna check the sources before reverting again. In addition that comment, I also would like to state that if my edits need references, then so do the others that were already added. So my edits were not considered an act of vandalism, but yours. So please do not rename the citation for what it really is. As I stated with a previous user, there is no need to lie. Lovejonesfly (talk) 18:41, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Pfff. The removal of unsourced information is vandalism? What nonsense. And it doesn't matter who put it there first--you stuck it back. Sourced to YouTube! Ha, did you really think we needed YouTube to verify that Gbagbo is the president of Cote d'Ivoire? You don't get it--YouTube is not a reliable source and cannot be used to verify anything, not even a person singing a tune somewhere. As for the other references, I looked at one or two of them, and removed two other non-reliable references, which you may have seen if you looked. I don't know if you're calling me or "a previous user" a liar, but I would urge you to mind your manners. Drmies (talk) 20:24, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Get mad if you want because the truth is truth. I pay attention to details and actually help Wikipedia instead telling people what's official and unofficial. Lovejonesfly (talk) 01:38, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
Pff. YouTube as a reliable source, that's a truth we can do without. "The head of state in Africa", that was a nice detail you paid attention to. Drmies (talk) 02:37, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

  • There was a time when 20 million dollar frauds and related murder suicides were notable. But perhaps with the Democratic congress in power since 2006 and an administration composed entirely of tax cheats, "Friends of Mozillo", and former Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac board members with close ties to ACORN, that type of fraud is just too minor to warrant a mention these days. Vandalism

I'm very upset about the vandalism of your userpage. Why is someone trying to remove the graphic depiction of your editing contributions? Also, what's with the canvassing I see above? Very shady. This type of thing might be okay in Amsterdam, but on Wikipedia we maintain extraordinarily high standards for behavior. ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:34, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Since when? kelapstick (talk) 13:29, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
Haha, shouldn't the first question be, who vandalized my user page by placing that there in the first place?? The vandal in question did fess up to sockpuppeteering also, and given the display of remorse and WP being primarily an American enterprise, I have no doubt they'll be forgiven. In Amsterdam, a social worker would sit down to talk to the person, incidentally. Now, the canvassing, well, what can I say--it's all part of an evil plot to destroy articles that are meaningful and interesting and that people come to see and that are important even though we can't prove they are and it's just your bad taste that makes you want to delete them and it's obviously the opinion of someone who doesn't know what they're talking about etc. Do I make myself clear? K, your comment is greatly appreciated. CoM, that Parente "case" is a bunch of air and you know it. The investigation isn't even in the news anymore, and it's simply not a meaningful murder. But I accept your apology! (And now I'm going to that AfD to change your vote, haha). Oh, remind me to tell you a bacon star-related Zionist story, later. Drmies (talk) 15:46, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Your time in the reformatory

Can you clarify what is meant by Reformatory (with a capital R) in the way you've used the term in describing some sort of Dutch institution (allegedly) involved in an educational enterprise? Also, a clarification of the Dutch phrase for that level (even though it's Wikilinked) might be nice.

We're quite familiar with your socialist notions on basic income and a nanny state, but your radical educational schemes are less well known on this side of the pond. Muchas gracias. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:20, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

  • I believe, sir, that the word is "socialistic"--and I saw that on a bumper sticker yesterday, that most reliable of sources. Yeah, I'll get on it. The problem is, there is no good translation of "reformatorisch". (But surely you noticed that the word here was an adjective, not a noun?). Drmies (talk) 20:14, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Wow, thanks for the co-nom! It's a nice article. I'm going to link to it from my userpage :) Hekerui (talk) 15:00, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah I figured that. It's borderline, but I felt like it was a significant enough subject that it can have its own article. I'll take a gander and see what I can do to flesh it out a bit. --User:Woohookitty Diamming fool! 04:58, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I noticed you changed the speedy category when I was trying to blank the article--the one I picked wasn't bad, was it? Well, what matters is it's gone. Drmies (talk) 06:16, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
No, it wasn't bad, but be sure to blank the attack when you encounter it. Who then was a gentleman? (talk) 06:25, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Good tweak Doc. I think the "in a country" part needs to go too. Can you just say which country? Or is it an imaginary or unnamed country? Is it fair to refer to it as being deeply repressive over that issue without a source? I'm flexible if you think it's fair, but it seems a bit POV for my small "c" conservative approach to encyclopedia editing. Did you ever read 100 Years of Solitude? I think Macondo would be a fun place to visit. How's This Earth of Mankind coming? ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:22, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Do you think if people like you spent less time sprucing up their user pages and more time working on article that we'd have finished the encyclopedia by now? I'm going to create those Dutch architect articles previously mentioned here if I can find them. It was fun reading through your page looking for them, but what a disappointment that I haven't been able to goad you into more religious and political discussions. Think of the fun we could be having! ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:54, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh and you told me to remind you tell me some joke... I assume it has something to do with article building? ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:43, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Go for it, CoM--like you said, build it and they'll come. Do like Blofeld and create a bunch of stubs, and we'll get to work. The joke...someone who took an issue with one of my AfD nominations looked at my user page, and thought the bacon star that I so proudly display meant that I was a die-hard Zionist who nominated an article for deletion because the subject had a more balanced approach to Israel than they thought I had...and they ended up calling me at work to chew me out... Drmies (talk) 05:55, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
I've always known you to be Iron like a lion in Zion. I expected that star would be nothing but trouble. I think a bacon strip asterisk would be better. Speaking of which, you, K-stick, and Shallots have yet to sign on for the next bacon challenge. But I'll try not to feel insulted. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:01, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
It's just July of 2009, and this is the 2010 challenge right? Plenty of time yet to sign up should it strike our fancy! LadyofShalott 02:18, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
I looked at the list just now, and I don't know...I'm a naysayer and a bad rasher, I know. I might go for it at some later point, ahem. Oh, I've come to the conviction that the BLT is the best sandwich in the world (on sourdough--is that traditional?). Lady, if you're here on this page to hustle an invitation for a picnic with BLTs and beer, tomorrow afternoon in the park downtown, you've come to the right place. Don't wear a dress, we're riding bikes. Woohoo!

Sorry CoM, ArbCom tells me that you are on a beer and bacon-ban, is that correct? Catch you next time! Drmies (talk) 02:24, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Maybe there will still be room for y'all once the rush really gets going. Did K-stick tell you I met a nice Canadian? They used to live in Pensacola, so I'm trying to get details on Orange beach. Either way, my plans are all coming together. No thanks to you and Shallots who haven't even offered put me up and show me around during the transition. Just like those elite Kennedy liberals, vote for taxes and regulations of others, but me me me me me for yourselves. Al Gore would be proud. ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:41, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I'll put you up alright, don't worry! And you know I'd love to vote for more taxes still, but, unfortunately, we have taxation without representation in this country. The same might apply to K-stick. Oh, I'm going to Orange Beach in a couple of weeks, to see Bob Dylan--chilling like a villain! Drmies (talk) 02:45, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Taxation without representation is my motto, I accedentally voted for the wrong person once because the party names were so similar, and I didn't know the local candidates. I am watching My Name Is Earl and they were talking about Canada and said the beer has twice the alcohol, and there is a pot leaf on the flag...too true....I may do the bacon challenge, but it may be contingant on the DYK people putting them up simutaniously, dispite the "unofficial" rule of thumb of no themes. I'll show you around Northern Nevada all you want. Just say the word.kelapstick (talk) 02:58, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Awfully nice of you Kelapstick. Imagine if everyone had as much kindness and caring for their fellow humans. Sadly, there are those trying to push their dependency encouraging values on others through big brother. And what can be done with those warped by the pernicious influences of satanic music, Heronymous Bosch paintings, and a burning desire to push their godlessness and hatred of all things wholesome and nurturing on the rest of humanity. :) Hahaha. I have to be careful what I say because Ched is going to give me another lecture. Speaking of sinners, how hot does it get up there in Reno now? Is that art fair thing going on? It would be cool to visit. But it's a ways away. But maybe, I'll have to consider it. It would be fun to come up for sure and I very much appreciate your extraordinarily generous offer. I hope you're having fun in Colorado. I really like the Four Corners area, for what that's worth. Cool stuff out there. I'm not so big on the New cities of the west. But Reno still has it's roots I think, so it's okay. :) Are you into hiking and biking at all? Rafting? What do you do up in Nevada for fun? I guess you're pretty busy with the kiddos. Doc, will you help me do an article for this toy company. They have awesome products. I can't believe they don't have an article. Granted it's not the dollar store lead paint stuff you get your kids, but to each his or her own. ChildofMidnight (talk) 07:49, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Sure--I'm always looking for nice toys. My favorites are HABA, which are sold in the US by www.oompa.com. No lead, handmade in Germany, good stuff. This thing is our favorite, well worth the money. The kid is watching Sesame Street and after I drop her off with some total strangers I'm going to work, where I'll read some Constantine P. Cavafy and some Rainer Maria Rilke (all left-wing activists, of course), and then I'll look for some toys. Thanks for the note! Drmies (talk) 14:38, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
"His haunting images focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety: themes that tend to position him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist poets." *cough*. ChildofMidnight (talk) 16:14, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
And this from the other dude's opening paragraph: "He was not always comfortable with his role as a nonconformist". I've always found that conforming with the norms on non-conformity to be a great challenge. We'll get you help soon Doc. Just try and hang in there for a little while longer. ChildofMidnight (talk) 16:17, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh, these two guys are the s**t. Re-reading Cavafy again after so many years was a joy, and reminded me of a favorite author of mine, who translated his work and promptly got an article on WP, Hans Warren. BTW, when I was preparing the syllabus for this summer I decided I would open up my big fat Norton at random to decide what to teach--and that's how Cavafy got on it. Two pages further and it would have been William Butler Yeats. Rilke--what can I say. Go read Stephen Mitchell's translation of "Archaic Torso of Apollo," and write an article on that poem. You must change your life! Oh, Plan Toys is a go. Now tweak to your heart's content. Drmies (talk) 16:29, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Edit war in Netherlands

[28]. Exciting times. I'm excited to check out what you've done for Plan Toys, a company that has helped build communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety: building themed toys that tend to position the company as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist toymakers. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:57, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Nice picture! But I think you need to practice a bit more perfecting your literary criticism. After all, the wish-dream of building communion with the ineffable, as long as the building blocks of that communion "bridge" are the traditional, stratified elements of the very system that always already creates ineffability, does little more than masking the very socio-economic structures that underlie capitalism's hold on the status quo and effectively transform an essential anxiety (that is, a manifestation of the traumatic quality of the real) into ressentiment. Drmies (talk) 21:03, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
It's good you're going to be down in Orange Beach so you can check out some rentals for me. What kind of rates do places go for down in that area? I'd like to be able to walk to stuff and especially to be able to run from my apartment or house. A backyard would be excellent, but if it's on the beach that's okay too. Is there an airport type thing in Pensacola? How far is it from there? Is that the best place to fly into? How far are you from there? Maybe I'll stay with you for a few months just until I get a feel for the area. ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:53, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh and how has the Zwarte Piet tradition gone over in Alabama? ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:19, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure. I'm having a hard enough time keeping a sort of Sinterklaas tradition going. A place on the beach is going to cost you a pretty penny, besides, I think it's all condos down there. Do you want me to find out? I can if you want to. I do believe Pensacola has an airport and it's not that far away from me--my folks drove down there in the spring and liked it well enough. If you want to try it out, my wife's aunt has a condo in Destin... Drmies (talk) 01:08, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
Having lived in both Alabama as a kid, I can imagine how short my lifespan would be if I walked the streets of Montgomery in Zwarte Piet regalia. I'm not sure if leaving the shoes full of grass in the grocery store freezer aisle is a peculiar Bonairean twist on the subject, or common throughout the Kingdom. I expect Spain to get in on the act some day, too: I've managed to assimilate everything about Sinterklaas except the notion that the punishment for being an extremely bad child is to be stuffed in a bag and forced to become a Spaniard.—Kww(talk) 01:43, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
I think Doc should give it a try. I'm sure people will understand when he explains it's a Dutch tradition. What's the worst that could happen?
Dustin sounds very nice. No income tax in FL. :) Doc where do you think would be a good place to live if you were me? What does "not that far away from me" mean? Are we talking 45 minutes or 4 hours? Your wife's aunt? Now we're talking! We could be family! ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:08, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
CoM, I'm not sure if you are being droll or really don't understand: he would be dead within 5 minutes unless the police arrested him for his own protection.—Kww(talk) 02:16, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
We don't need that kind of negative vibe. If Doc wants to carry on the proud Dutch traditions emphasizing Europe's long history of racial tolerance and understanding he has my full support. If it's good enough for Leidsche Rijn, it's good enough for Opelika. ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:37, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
Hey KWW, don't worry. We are so segregated here I would have to ... [let your imagination run wild here]. Our neighborhood association sends out emails when non-white people walk the streets here. (That's not a joke, and also it is not funny.) I didn't know that bad children had to become Spanish--as a child, I guess I always thought they just had to live there for a year, maybe on the ship.

CoM, I didn't know FL didn't have income tax. I know TN doesn't, and that worked out nice for us--I made more money there with lower pay than I do here (and we had better and cheaper health insurance.) Now, Pensacola is a lot closer than I thought, and Destin is just up the road from there. It's nice there, though it is very, very developed. Now, if you want to live someplace nice, hit KWW up! BTW, KWW, I'll be there for Sint Maarten, OK? Drmies (talk) 02:38, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

I forgot: the place to go, really, is Apalachicola--especially for the oysters. That's where my folks went and stayed at a BnB, and really enjoyed themselves. There was a bar, and sidewalks, all those civilized things. Drmies (talk) 02:41, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
I need like some semblance of a town man. I'm not quite officially retired yet. Oh and thanks again (or for the first time if I didn't thank you before) for Plan Toys. Very much appreciated. You da man! ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:37, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

The school, again

I was just looking at the version of the article pre-plucking of feathers. The library had a bunch of Dell Computers - ok, fine. How, though, is that supposed to have translated to "improving the aesthetic appeal" of the library? Does TPS teach its students the meaning of the word "aesthetic" (or how to look it up in a dictionary)? LadyofShalott 02:27, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Hmm good question. What I found most interesting was that building, that hall? It had, apparently, really hot-looking drywall. No kidding. My wife has a seminar there tomorrow; I'll ask her about the computers and the drywall. Drmies (talk) 03:08, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Typically, anything that discusses a subject or topic in any depth, and it pops up with Google News and comes from something big--in this case, national daily newspapers and magazines--will count as a reliable source. :P

Hello, Drmies. You have new messages at Tide rolls's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Greetings Drmies! I just did a partial revert on some edits that you made to this article, and rather than have you think it was a drive by reversion, I wanted to take a moment and explain.

Some of the sections you deleted are supported for inclusion by the wikischools project. The small gallery of alumni is standard in such cases. The (admittedly) larger than usual listing of athletic accomplishments is a compromise that was reached some time ago to avoid even longer lists from appearing (you should see what happened before .... every single little first or second place finish in every single tournament was listed). This established a criterion that restricts these lists (though in a minority of cases, the list can be longer ... in a few cases, I have put the lists in drop down tables to avoid taking up too much space.

After restoring the article, I went back and restored every other change you made. If there is anything further with this article, I would be happy to discuss this. LonelyBeacon (talk) 15:17, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Hi Beacon, thanks for your note. I've had a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article guidelines and have seen that the suggestions made there are more generous than I thought they would be. (But that list of "accomplishments," that's a compromise that WP can do without, in my opinion...) That clubs, for instance, would be relevant is not automatically clear to me. For notable alumni, I see that the guideline there also is laxer than I thought (or hoped...I'm a cutter) it would be. I would note, however, that in my view a list of alumni that have articles, for instance, don't need a long resume since they have an article; I am inclined to treat those like dab-lists and remove, for instance, wikilinking, because those links will be found in the main article for that person. But I have no intention of going back and imposing my opinion on an article you have spend much more time on than I have. So thank you for the note, and good luck keeping it clean--which is a hard thing to do with school articles. Drmies (talk) 17:14, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for your good efforts LB. Drmies tends to be very jealous of the outstanding educational experience offered at America's premier high schools. Things were quite different for him at Dutch Reformatory school. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:16, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes--only first place counts there. Drmies (talk) 17:30, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Drmies,
Thanks for the explanation. FWIW, I tend to be less of an inclusionist myself (I am still on a long tea-break from AfD after going through one too many heated debates there), and I cannot agree more about keeping the school articles clean. I'm still getting a feel for what people "expect" on school articles. I wish you and CoM best in your editing! LonelyBeacon (talk) 19:13, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks--but it's probably too late for the one thing you should wish CoM to acquire: common sense. Drmies (talk) 19:15, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Dutch novels

I#m starting a few Dutch novels like The Asylum Seeker. Can you expand a few of them into a DYK perhaps? Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:54, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

  •  Done. Sure! Not too many at the same time, please. Oh, and I'd prefer happy novels--not this hypochondriac shit about a terminally ill former prostitute who marries an asylum seeker so he can gain residency while her boyfriend, so disillusioned with life that he decides to unmask every single illusion in the world (including happiness) and decides to dedicate his life to making his girlfriend happy, is moving quickly towards a denouement in which he also unmasks himself. Check? Drmies (talk) 19:20, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Wonderful. Well I was planning on starting some award winning books from what I started earlier, AKO Literatuurprijs. If you give me a list of anything you want started or ahything give me a bell. Maybe the other novels red linked are better? Oh I also started some articles on writers in Ferdinand Bordewijk Prijs. I'd imagine you could turn one or two into a DYK. Given that we only have one article in Category:Dutch-language novels then I ought to add some. Louis Ferron looks like a lot could be written about it. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:19, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Hey Dr., I'm sort of kidding. I a getting kind of interested in the guy now, though there's so much Dutch bleakness there... And I do appreciate the effort. Louis Ferron indeed seems fertile enough (I didn't even really know the guy), and DBNL has some information. BTW, Bordewijk is one of my all-tie favorites. Let's keep going on this. Drmies (talk) 14:46, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Cool, I'll start some award winning novels shortly. How are you on Dutch rivers? Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:02, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Matt Sanchez

There's a coordinated effort to marginalize Matt Sanchez as a blogger and not recognize him as a journalist. The editors who have done this are doing this willingly and are compromised and should be called into question. Look at the segment below: Matt Sanchez reported on the Iraq War as an embedded blogger.[15] He has provided commentary for World Net Daily[16] and currently contributes commentary to the Fox Forum, which is the blog of Fox News. Please note, Matt Sanchez has written hard news items for Fox News. ([32] and [33]) This is the type of unfairness that is infuriating. Can you identify who is making these edits? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.59.82.19 (talk) 10:17, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Isn't it interesting that Matt Sanchez is apparently embedded in Afghanistan and now, by magic coincidence, someone is defending him by posting on people's talk pages from an IP in Afghanistan? I wonder who this anonymous person is! Who could this person possibly be? Henrymrx (t·c) 10:55, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
I imagine this was left on others' pages too? Well thanks, IP, for the news. I think you have established that Matt Sanchez has a job. Great. "Unfairness"? I don't get it--if he's nothing but a journalist who does his job he does not have notability per WP:N. BTW, your text, copied from the article I presume, was entirely unclear: you could try using quotation marks or proper block-quote format (which uses indentation).

Henry, I'm not much for conspiracy theories though I appreciate the information (and your conspiracy sounds more probable than the IP's--"there's a coordinated effort..."--and which edits are you talking about? No, IP, don't give me the diffs--I don't care.). If this IP is our subject, it's probably a good thing FOX has editors. BTW, this is why I have little interest in contributing to articles so dependent on the news, and, in the US at least, on political perspective. Drmies (talk) 14:43, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Doc I think you're missing the point. If he's a journalist, then that should be noted in the article. If he's only notable for an Ann Coulter quote then the biography should be deleted. And by the way, the editors working on this article won't even include his actual response to Coulter's quote. I'm a bit surprised that you would think provocative quotes by others that happened at a conference the individual attended and are otherwise unrelated to the subject belong in the opening paragraph of a person's biography. You better be very careful about what OTHER people say at the conferences you attend. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:18, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
I'm always missing the point, I'm sure, but that he's a journalist is noted in the very first sentence of the article. Maybe you missed my well-nuanced and elegant statements on the talk page of said article, which were based on the premise--for which there seems to be some support--that he wouldn't have been so notable had it not been for the presence of and statements and specific photo-op by your goddess. Drmies (talk) 17:33, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
The Ann Coulter thing is covered in the body of the article where it belongs. As your statements made clear, it's out of place and inappropriate in the opening paragraphs where it's significance isn't clear and it violates BLP, undue weight, and NPOV guidelines. You also haven't addressed why Sanchez's own views on the incidents used against him have been removed despite reliable sourcing. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:06, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Hey, I'm not going to object to the removal of that info from the lead, I thought I made that clear. I objected to its lack of grammatical and rhetorical coherence, and if you read carefully, you'll see I noted that I agree with you on that point. As far as I know, that is how he rose to fame and thus might be worth noting in the lead, though I'll grant you immediately that there is undue weight in that paragraph. As far as his own views are concerned, I thought I noted that I didn't want to read that far into the article--and as nothing in the article relates to Herman Brood or other important things, I'm probably not going to. If I'm going to end up in an editing dispute, it better be over something important, such as Dimitris Melissanidis. Drmies (talk) 20:38, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help on articles. What do you have against this unsourced bit taken in good faith from the town's article: "It is thought to be one of the oldest carnivals in the world commemorating the year 1000 when a miller's wife killed the tyrant of the city, King Arduino. Arduino d’Ivrea, Marquis Arduino of Ivrea, (955–1015), also known as Arduin of Italy, Margrave of Ivrea who in 1002, following the death of Otto III, declared himself King of Italy. From that episode began a civil war between the oppressed people and the king's supporters, finally won by people." The candy easter eggs are covered in the main article, but it seems like the candies are notable enough for their own article, no? Can't you take a break from hyped books that didn't sell well and Dutch books that don't address the colonial oppression? Happy No Drama days!!! ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:06, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, I didn't see that in the town's article, cause I didn't look there--and now that I have, I still don't see it. I thought you'd appreciate that we now have an article with web, book, and news sources, and without a clunker like "...King Arduino. Arduino d’Ivrea, Marquis Arduino of Ivrea, (955–1015), also known as Arduin of Italy, Margrave of Ivrea who..." I see now why that rubbed me the wrong way: the erroneous comma after "Marquis Arduino of Ivrea" should be (by law) placed after "Margrave of Ivrea"--one incorrect comma makes one sentence into two sentence fragments. Oh yeah. BTW, I don't know if I agree with you on the candy notability of those Easter eggs, but I wasn't going to change that, as you saw. Power to the people!

(PS: Bougainville does address that colonial bit, though in a roundabout way--any intelligent Dutch novel about that period/colony does, and the protagonist's position as a diplomat in Bangladesh only enforces that. It's really a wonderful novel, and it's a pity there's no English translation. It'll have to wait--I never finished translating Het verboden rijk.) Drmies (talk) 20:16, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

See Ivrea#Culture. I will change the link to easter eggs since you have no respect for the long candy tradition and cadbury eggs that are distinctly important. I'm sure they'll make it to the Netherlands in a few years time... You guys owned Bangladesh too? Who knew! What were you doing over there? Are you going to pay reparations for whatever you took? I know mostly about the Indonesian operation. Thanks for the pepper, or is it nutmeg? Some other spice? ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:30, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
That sentence is not in there. You can leave the eggs any way you like it! (Cadbury eggs are disgusting.) No, we did not own Bangladesh, though the Dutchies have done important work there on water management. I just got a lifetime's supply of nutmeg in, really tasty stuff, and tellicherry pepper, from http://www.penzeys.com/. I'd send you some, but I don't think California allows agricultural imports from Alabama. Drmies (talk) 20:45, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
How about here carnival#Ivrea? I notice you ignored the demand for reparations. You live in Alabama? Isn't that dangerous for a Dutchman? Do you have clean running water or are you boiling it in your Alessi tea set? ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:00, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Why aren't there article on Rijnlandsche Carnival and Oeteldonk? ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:03, 19 July 2009 (UTC) Mies family photo [34]?

Stay at home

Could you please refrain from making edits to the page "stay-at-home dad"? It is an educational assignment (as it says on the top of the page), that we will be graded on. Also, in the future, if you feel that something should be taken out of the article, please post on the talk page instead of just going around deleting things. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Denastroje (talkcontribs) 22:24, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

I did see it on the talk page, but not until after I saw the messages that suggested this. It's a really small template! Thanks, and good luck, Drmies (talk) 01:51, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Hello again. I've been systematically referencing the entire list... it's extremely boring, but needed doing. I'll finish doing it, but once it's done the whole thing probably needs reformatting; it needs an introduction for instance, and the flagicons need to go per WP:FLAG... making it look closer to List of folk metal bands or similar would be ideal, but people seem to get uptight about things like this. I'll put up a list of suggestions when I'm finished, but your input is, as always, extremely welcome. Let me know what you reckon. Cheers, Blackmetalbaz (talk) 01:24, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Bias

Obviously since wikipedia has many vids from youtube, many of which are in this SAME section youtube is ok. BIAS much?

Cool video. I think it should be included. But it looked pretty legitimate to me. But then I'm very gullible when it comes to government conspiracies. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:03, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Have I mentioned that I have utterly failed in avoiding the drama boards for No Drama Days 2009? Oh well. Better luck next year? How are you holding out? I did get some vital article work done on pizzerias, Icelandic candy, pocket neighborhoods (which might interest you), and some So Cal eateries. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:01, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I haven't been keeping up with the drama boards. I'll have a look. I'm fine--a couple of vandal warnings and some odd disagreement on Stay-at-home dad, but besides that I'm churning out one fecal or literary article after another. Oh, and I got a few more Claw Boys Claw albums to write. We had fresh pasta with pesto and I made a nice salad, so now I'm nice and fat and sleepy. I did see that eatery of yours, but I won't be able to wikistalk you tonight--we're a one-computer family for the next few days, unfortunately. Drmies (talk) 00:30, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Gosh CoM, Whitman was the Founding Father of Yawping. In fact, almost all contemporary Yawpers trace their heritage back to him. See, you learn something new every day  : ) Doc Tropics 15:48, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
And I have felt his divine afflatus. Look for the yawp in section 52, line 3, of the "Deathbed edition" of "Song of Myself".

Those images, I guess they could all count. The gasstation, which is just great, looked a bit too new to me, but 1936 is still OK, I imagine. I would pick that one, or "De Volharding." Thanks for working on that! Drmies (talk) 17:45, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

...for being so concientious about handling newcomers. I agreed with your recent AfD nom of Live Edge Furniture, but looking into it I realized how new the original author was. I went to his page to lay out a welcome mat and possibly offer a bit of advice, but you had beat me to it. Well done! Recruiting and training new wikipedians is a critical area of our development (at least in my opinion), and it starts with making newcomers feel welcome and useful, not making them feel like idiots for simple mistakes. In short, I think that you handled a somewhat delicate situation very neatly, and I compliment you. Thanks, Doc Tropics 15:48, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Doc, I think you're giving me entirely too much credit. These things in fact can be learning experiences (for both sides) but the editor didn't actually contact me or leave anything in the edit summary. I do hope they feel the way you do, and I thank you for your kind words. Drmies (talk) 16:09, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Conspiracy theories and the Vatican

Given your interest in this important subject I though you should have a look at this [37]. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:34, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

While the Discovery channel may not be a reliable source for confirming or disputing a conspiracy theory, it is certainly a legitimate source establishing notability. I think removing those cites is a mistake and I would ask that you restore them so people interested in the subject can find information on them. ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:40, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Rectal alarm clocks

How amusing that your DYK nom was not well received. :) I suggest losing the Dutch title. Assuming it's been printed under the English name, I think just including the translation is appropraite. A determination on whether the burning candle details are worth including is above my pay grade, but it's an interesting hook to be sure. I wanted to shorten your other one too with an alt hook offering, but I left it be. At least there were no semicolons. ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:23, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes, amusing, wasn't it...but I do think there was an objection being made there on principle (and I've changed it since then), which I found sad and amusing. That translation business, I need to look into that--I just don't know if we should translate titles of books that haven't appeared in English translation. I tried my hand at the same author's "Anal Alphabet" and found it very difficult--maybe one of these days I'll share some of those nuggets with you.

PS: Which other one? I have half a dozen up right now, I think. Drmies (talk) 20:29, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Half a dozen, eh? Is school out already?
The other hook was the one right after that. Perlmutterspanker or something. I thought the hook was more a summary of the article with the major details included than a baited hook, but perhaps those are hookish points of interest to others like yourself. When do you want me to come down there? Are you going to have a break during which to show me around the panhandle and the Bama sights before school starts? Edit comments

I confess, I have left some "assholish" edit comments. I'll keep your exhortation in mind. By the way, I don't plan to edit-war, so I've opened a discussion proposing removing the Erdos-Bacon Number material. --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 00:17, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

  • I find it hard sometimes to remain civil when I see what butcheries are being perpetrated to the English language, and I try to just stick to "ce" or something like that. (I edit, by pure chance, a lot of articles on topics from India and Pakistan--what one finds there is appalling.) But that's difficult for me as well. You are a very careful editor and proofreader and for that I commend you; you make the edits I would make also. So let me apologize again for butchering your name, and if there's a hatchet, let's bury that as well, shall we? As for that statement, I'll leave my comment there. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:13, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks very much. I considered the hatchet buried already, since you let me know you weren't making fun of my name. It was an easy mistake to make, and the trouble with edit comments is they can't be edited even for typos. Glad to know there's someone else looking after the dignity of the language. --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 11:16, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

For love of the English language and your dedication to making turgid rivers of muddy prose into sparkling streams of clear expression, I bestow upon you my greatest mark of esteem. Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 11:30, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Dear Preston, thank you for the star, and I'd sent one right back, but it's probably better to let a suitable time period elapse so it doesn't look like we're having some sort of grammar cabal. Among my good friends here I count one who is comma-splice challenged, one who has run-on problems, and one wit speling isues, and I'd like to stay on their good side. As for the edit summary, you might be pleased to know that in the past I have advocated to option to edit edit summaries: "I believe we should be able to edit edit summaries--I've found, more than once, that I made a typo in an edit summary," I said a while back in a comment on a user's metatalk page (a talk page where we could discuss his talk page). I also proposed a talk page for every individual edit summary, but that's probably a bit too much--although some of your comments might provoke some discussion! User Hippo and I have come to terms concerning Ms. Portman's numbers and hair, so all's well that ends well.

Keep up the good work, and thank you again for the barnstar, your sharp eyes, and your good spirit. Drmies (talk) 17:25, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Regarding your comment in the the "Non-stop_action" section above, would you be willing to clarify? Vandalization of Gravois Park St. Louis page?

I hope I've misunderstood something here, but it seems like you've vandalized the page for my hometown, Gravois Park St. Louis. I added that In Popular Culture section because I found it relevant and very amusing. I've now cited my sources. If this is what you wanted me to do in the first place you should have just said so before taking such drastic, and damaging, action. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gustave Pennington (talkcontribs) 05:48, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Well, to have sources is one thing. But "Gravois" isn't mentioned on that page, and even if it were, it would still be trivial information. I don't see how my removal of such trivia was damaging; your time would be better spent finding some relevant information on, for instance, the history of the neighborhood, its characteristics, its architecture, etc. Drmies (talk) 05:54, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
    • Look at it again. It's your neighborhood, you should read the local paper and have the books about your city's history on the shelf. All I got is the internet, but I managed to add some sources that at least might prevent deletion of the article altogether. Get to work and make the article worthwhile. Dutch politicans

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Ulysses S. Grant, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush? See Vrouwekerk. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:24, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

What is this and why aren't we there? By the way, I agree that the Bush's aren't really very Dutch, but finding this out about the others certainly makes some sense. ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:02, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Oh, now I finally see what you were talking about--I totally missed that claim about those cats being descended from Delano. Well, you saw the source, didn't you? The museum website. So there. Besides, everyone knows that every American is descended from Clovis or William the Conqueror, or both. Yeah, five days off...I just talked to my buddy today, who's been working on the U2 shows in Amsterdam (they just finished yesterday, I believe), and I'm very, very jealous. I got finals to give still and then a bunch of grading, bleh. You doing alright? How's life on the West coast? You and MQS still painting the town red every now and then? (I heard about the two of you on Sunset B., and apparently you dance like the previous president.) Drmies (talk) 04:06, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
I'm not seeing MQS as often as I used to, you know how stars can be. But Law is said to be moving up this way. Grading? I thought you New Schoolers got rid of those artificial measures in favor of more abstract notions of assessment and value. My dance moves are sick. Things are quiet here. Still working on the big "plan". It's sunny though, and the new brew pub type place across the street has excellent food including gourmet burgers. And there's a baked donut type place around the corner that I've been sampling. So life isn't all hard work and struggle. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:48, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

There isn't really a category for "Christian artists" although the great majority of stained glass artists obviously worked on religious themes. For some earlier centuries it would effectively just duplicate general artist categories. Setting up Category:20th century Christian artists would be a good idea, with national sub-cats. Johnbod (talk) 12:24, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi. In light of recent events and community concerns about the way in which content is transferred I have proposed a new wikiproject which would attempt to address any of the concerns and done in an environment where a major group of editors work together to transfer articles from other wikipedias in the most effective way possible without BLP or referencing problems. Please offer your thoughts at the proposal and whether or not you support or oppose the idea of a wikiproject dedicated to organizing a more efficient process of getting articles in different languages translated into English. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:00, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

This is really annoying, and it's your fault I'm involved. :p What's up with the screwy alleged birthdates for him? LadyofShalott 17:47, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Oh God no! Drmies (talk) 18:04, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
    • Well (I went for a walk to calm down), it's complicated. Ha! I think MQS and I talked about this--that's in his archive or mine, probably mine, and see also the article's talk page--and he filled me in: there's a couple of IPs (and maybe a registered user?) which are Faerch himself and his mother/publicist who are interested, for reasons unknown to me, to keep the real birthdate something of a mystery. So a bunch of fans, I guess, keep scouring the internet and come up with nothing but blogs and computations based on vague references in various sources in order to fill in that blank. ("Official MySpace" my ***!) It's really irritating and it goes nowhere. I saw you simply removed it and I think that's the proper action, but this has the potential to go on forever, which is why I won't look at it anymore... So good luck to you, my Lady, but don't drag me back in! Haha, Drmies (talk) 18:39, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
LOL, OK thanks for the background. I remember seeing something about that, probably here, before. I'm keeping it on my watchlist and will remove any dates added without reliable sources. (I wonder why he/his mother doesn't just remove the date rather than making up crap.) I won't bug you with it anymore though. LadyofShalott 18:49, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh, you can always bug me! In fact, I'm always honored when someone who is both a lady and a powerbroker shows up on my humble talkpage. I should go find you a red carpet so your slippers won't get dirtied by whatever other visitors leave behind. Drmies (talk) 18:52, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

American Girl section

Re: a proposed List of American Girl dolls to cut down on the clutter in the main article.

I think doing so could help achieve the goal of brevity and keep that section an overview. To clarify, are you proposing linking out to a new List section in place of all the character descriptions, and moving those character descriptions to the new List section?

I would suggest referring to such a List as American Girl Characters, so as to maintain a distinction between the actual named dolls that AG markets and the generic dolls of the JLY line. --Heidilaura (talk) 04:48, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

  • To your first question: Yes, that is what I had in mind. In all honesty, that that distinction was important was not clear to me from the article at all. If you think that such a distinction makes sense, that would be fine with me, I guess. Just to clarify: there are Characters, on whom two distinct lines of dolls are based? Where do the Girl of the Year and the Bitty dolls fit in? The article is quite confused/confusing, since there's also a section "Retired product lines" which contains both books and dolls--the lead is already a bit confusing to me. Why don't you go ahead and create such a separate list article and move all the relevant information? Then we can sort it out later. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 05:08, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
    • Hey there. Yes, there are Character dolls (Historical line and Limited Edition Girl of the Year line) which are different from the generic dolls that people can buy (Bitty and Just Like You lines). There are also other retired lines that were sort of pilots for American Girl but were disconintued after a couple years, all of which were also Character dolls. The distinction is that the Characters are named by the company and have books describing their lives and interests, and the products marketed for them are all based on those books. The other lines don't have a backstory. So anyway, I think it is a useful distiction upon which to revise this cumbersome section. I started working on pulling them out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Heidilaura/List_of_American_Girl_dolls but I have to admit that my Wiki editing time and abiliites are limited right now. I am among other things a business writer and consultant, so the writing is not the problem; finding time to edit according to Wiki's coding and formats is! I will do what I can on this and perhaps you can back me up in terms of making sure it's all copacetic as per Wiki before we link to it? I should have more time in a month or so when I finish some other projects. Thanks. (Heidilaura (talk) 23:30, 3 August 2009 (UTC))
      • Thanks for the note. I'll have a look--when I can devote serious time to it. I got a couple of girls to keep happy here, so I'm sort of off and on. When they're six month old you can't, apparently, just leave them for an hour. BTW, I'm teaching a lot of business writing classes this fall--great fun. Drmies (talk) 23:54, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Mishra

Wouldn't it make sense to a least mention that that word means a variant of Bhairavi? Otherwise a reader is left in the dark, and a mishra raga can be very different from a straightforward version. I know a version of Raga Mand by Nikhil Banerjee that when compared to Mishra Mand (that one is popular, have many versions) is much more "classical". Am I seeing this too rigidly? It's just that when I read something and don't understand a word central to the topic it annoys me :/ What do you think? Hekerui (talk) 22:31, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Sure--specify this any way you want. I rearranged the sentence since it's in a section about the compositions on the album, and the way you had it (a very informative way, sure enough) didn't start with the specifics of the song (-title) but with the generality of Bhairavi. If you want to respecify, so to speak, go ahead--but I think it should follow, not lead. Does that make sense? Drmies (talk) 22:55, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
    • BTW, I re-added the link to Kitundu's instruments as a footnote. You may have been right in having removed it from the External links according to a strict reading of WP:EL, but it's not exactly a fansite or bandpage. Drmies (talk) 23:01, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Looking at it again, "interpretation" covers it well and the mention should perhaps go into into "Mishra" or "Raga" itself. Hekerui (talk) 15:14, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

I've found Mies's Dutch to be unreliable, but as long as the language used is simple we should be okay. Maybe Google translate is the way to go? ChildofMidnight (talk) 15:40, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, besides my linguistic inability noted so eloquently above, I also don't really know what this entails. But if you'll tell me in terms a Child could understand, I might be of some use. Drmies (talk) 15:43, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
The general idea is to find articles on other language Wikipedias that do not yet exist here (or do so only in very stubby form) and create the articles here with good references. This could entail translation from the original language, and/or finding your own references. LadyofShalott 01:59, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh, a new font! Nice! OK, I've done some of that already--that's how we have Claw Boys Claw, for instance, an article we could not do without. Sounds good! Drmies (talk) 02:05, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Friday Night Death Slot revert

Give me one good reason you reverted those edits! It was not vandalism. Surviving Suburbia is still on, and strong, so it should not be in the chart. What you don't get is that you can't just revert every single edit I make. You got that? Look through the edits before "helping" Wikipedia! 99.151.253.124 (talk) 21:28, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

  • Pff. Maybe when you start giving references for the information you add, that would be a start. An edit summary like " it's still on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" is very unlikely to make anyone think you're actually adding something of value. I took the liberty of removing your 'vandalism' warning, since no one would take that seriously. Drmies (talk) 22:14, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Whoa, stop the presses. I just saw a promo for "Drugs, Sex & Sleaze in Amsterdam," A fair and balanced program from Fox News to "expose the truth." Headlined "Hot Dirty Dam!"... "the culture warriors debate Europe's sin city", the program sounds like must-see television on the O'Reilly Factor. Don't miss it! And I know I can count on you to add the relevant links to Wikipedia's Amsterdam article. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:22, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

  • Ha ha, I got both girls tonight--I can't expose them to that filth! (And I don't mean Amsterdam.) Hey, I stirfried tonight, for the first time. It wasn't bad! Rosie is playing with my toes right now. She's a funny kid, and she'd be perfect if only she would sleep (and leave my laptop alone). Enjoy the show, Drmies (talk) 23:51, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

I found it Chinchilla rescue centres. Another good samaritan has tagged it for speedy deletion. If only it was this easy to clean-up sin cities. ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:28, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm glad you cleaned up Baucus. Questions about his Montana residency? Ha! What about his birth certificate? I just saw that they finally proved that the president was born in the Republic of Kenya. Of course, Obama being so progressive, he was born there when it wasn't even a republic, apparently, just a dominion. As for those Dutchies, pff, I wash my hands of the matter. Eh...hate to break it to you...there is no such thing... Well, a couple of months ago I got a speeding ticket and had to pay that at some office, but I'm sure they won't make you go there. Besides, Baucus is owned by a lot of people other than the ones who voted for him, so feel free to have at him. OK, I struck that entirely unencyclopedic comment so no one can read that. Hey, did you see the Krugman talk page? I supported your oddly reasonable proposition! Drmies (talk) 03:33, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
No such thing as Democratic politicans? Have they all gone communist? Haha, only kidding. You mean no such thing as hell? There's only one way to find out for sure! You go first.
Do you think I should do a sensible rewrite of the opening paragraphs of the Paul Krugman article? I do find the "American liberal" phrasing a bit lumpy (although I see it's been modified now, but still needs improvement). Unfortunately, I expect any efforts at tweaking will be met with more attacks and antagonism. Did you have a look at ProudNation yet (uhoh, now it's up for speedy too! What happened to live and let live? They're treating these new articles the way the Dutch treated Ayan Hirsi Ali). Of course I can't actually make heads or tails of the ProudNation article's content, but you're much better with that socialist newspeak than I am.
And I see you used the phrase "relevant to economical theory," which is a good indicator that it's past your bedtime and/ or you've had a few too many drinks. Also, you agreed with me on the content dispute which suggests I may have erred. I will have to reconsider my position. And I still haven't had a chance to learn more about the dangers thriving in the capital of your native land from our fair and balanced news media. Tomorrow is a new day. ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:40, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey so i'm finally watching O'Reillys report on Amsterdam. Terrific so far... The lead in intro includes a report "GOP self-destruction?" report featuring Ann Coulter criticizing Conservatives for hurting themselves with the "nonsense" about Obama's birth certificate. (Seeing that you, O'Reilly and Coulter agree on this issue, I am rethinking my position. Perhaps there's something to the controversy after all?)

Okay but back to the big show. The lead in start with the song "Why do birds suddenly appear..." and scenic images, then transitions to "You've got to fight for your right to party" by the Beastie Boys with images of graffiti, black alleys, strippers, and dope smoking. "Sodom and Gomorrah or Disneyland East?" Ahahahahahaha! LOVE IT!!!

More to follow. ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:08, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

  • Okay. More highlights! The story featured in the "Culture Warriors" segment (one of your favorites). O'Reilly said that Fox reported on Amsterdam back in December because "some American secular progressives want to turn the USA into a permissive culture like Western Europe, that's what's driving the drug legalization, gay and plural marriage, light sentences for convicted criminals." :)

He calls Amsterdam a permissive city and says the Netherlands is "perhaps the most liberal European country." Then he says they are "now shutting down pot shops and legalized brothels" because organized crime is controlling both.

A guest commentator says the permissive culture over there "hasn't worked" despite the "wonderfully naive ideas about teaching their children to have safe sex and smoke grass." Then a parody video is shown mocking O'Reilly's previous report and comparing homicide and pot smoking rate (which favor Amsterdam and the Netherlands)... Anyway, you get the idea. Great stuff. I guess if the "far left" secular progressives get their way Selma will never be the same... ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:55, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

  • And if Selma changes...that would be a bad thing how? I could refute some of these statements, but what's the point. I read in the paper today that "socialized healthcare" has destroyed every country that has tried it. Of course, I now live in the bestest country in the world, with probably the highest incarceration, homicide, and infant mortality rates in the West. We were at the dentist yesterday for Elisabeth's lovely little teeth, and one of the dentists gets a magazine from the Living Church of God or something like that, declaring that the end of the world (i.e., America) is near, in part because of "gay rights" (they put that in quotes). Well. At least we'll always have chocolate covered bacon... Drmies (talk) 13:57, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Doc, in case it wasn't clear, I posted the above because I thought you'd enjoy the subtle digs and politics involved interesting, such as the bits mentioning "plural marriage" in the same bit with gay marriage and the digs at Europe as if it would be the worst things in the world to be more like those areas. I think the whole idea of "culture warriors" and "culture war" is fun. There are some legitimate issues involved and some over-the-top flame-throwing.
Given the number of crazies I guess maybe I should take it more seriously, but I think it is really more interesting and entertaining than anything. But certainly there is an element of fear-mongering that is not constructive and feeds ignorance and bias. The same thing happens when legitimate criticisms and controversies are "sanitized" from wikipedia articles because they are some-how dangerous and unwelcome to the powers that be. :)
I imagine it's a big difference between Amsterdam and Selma, and yet they both have a certain magic despite their imperfections. Can't we all just get along? ChildofMidnight (talk) 16:47, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
CoM, you just found me in a bad mood this morning. Now that I've cleaned the kitchen floor and I smell like bleach I feel much better. I do appreciate the update, and I'm kind of sorry I missed it, if only because I love seeing my beloved city on television. You know, until the murder of Van Gogh I was all gung-ho about the Dutch way, but I feel a bit different now. At the same time, absence makes the heart grow fonder. Sure we can get along! Take it easy, and keep me posted about what's happening in the real world. Next time you go across the state line to gamble away your welfare check/inheritance/patrimony/porn fortune, tell K-stick I said hi. Later! Drmies (talk) 17:51, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I forgot to mention this: the Beastie Boys played in Amsterdam, not too long after Licensed to Ill came out (in Paradiso? I'm not sure, maybe not). They were touring with Public Enemy and caused a bit of a row cause they had a cage dancer--a nekkid lady, I imagine. Anyway, I missed the show, cause I was working (stocking supermarket shelves for minimum wage in Amstelveen), but VPRO aired the show on the radio, and I got the Joe Averages, who only listen to MOR, to change the channel. I stocked quite happily that evening, me and this other "alternative" guy. So, "Fight for your Right to Party" does take me back a bit, yes. Thanks for reminding me! Drmies (talk) 17:57, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Truly you didn't miss much. I gave you the best highlights and saved you from having to suffer through a thorough brainwashing session to get to those juicy bits!
I hope the Beastie Boy dealing with cancer is doing okay. I think they are a very fun and positive group. And I'm a big Public Enemy fan. I've been Fighting the Power my whole life.
There doesn't seem to be the same level of political rap and rock these days, despite arguments to the contrary, but maybe I'm just being nostalgic. I don't find the rants and politically correct ravings of the current crop of sheeple and their musician pied pipers nearly as interesting as the issues PE addressed substantively (the malt liquor man for example). I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Cypress Hill and Rage Against the Machine (although they're the best of the bunch). Perhaps when y'all are done raging you can be a little more conscientious and pragmatic? :) Here's hoping you'll Do the Right Thing and get it together. ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:30, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh and as to your other comments, I'm confident the present administration (some have suggested I'm not even allowed to utter the O-word) will address prison reform right after they get to work on immigration reform and school reform. Don't hold your breath. ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:33, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Hmm. I don't really know what "politically correct" means anymore. It sounds to me like ressentiment, at least when the letter-writers in my local paper use it. Oh, I love Cypress Hill, BTW, but by now I'm so old that when I use "Looking Through the Eye of a Pig" to illustrate narrative mode, students don't know what I'm talking about. School reform...that would be nice. Here's my politically unpopular opinion: keep parents out of it. In that supposedly liberal place I'm from, no parent would ever consider calling the teacher to complain about their child's grade. Anyway, that's neither here nor there. But I'm with you on the sheeple and the rants about birth certificates and the imminent destruction of America--that is what you were talking about, right? ;) Keep the faith! Does BBQ chicken deserve its own article? Can the saucing removed in this edit be sourced [40]? ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:12, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

GA Reassessment of William March

I have conducted a reassessment of the above article as part of the GA Sweeps process. I have found some concerns with the referencing which you can see at Talk:William March/GA1. I have placed the article on hold whilst these are fixed. Thanks. Jezhotwells (talk) 10:07, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Try beta

Have you tried beta?--The LegendarySky Attacker 23:15, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Look at the your screen where "log out" "my contributions" and "my watchlist" etc. appear. Next to "Drmies" you should see "Try Beta". It is basically a different design for Wikipedia. Check it out.--The LegendarySky Attacker 01:49, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Haha, when Facebook went to their 'new layout' I practically gave up on it. But I'll give it a try. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 01:52, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Hmm it's not too different, and that's good. I was on the French Wikipedia the other day, and I thought that looked a bit different--maybe they're doing that also. Later, Drmies (talk) 02:10, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Re: IP vandalism on Karaman

Original post: FYI, that IP whose edits you reverted, they earlier called someone a "kankermogool" in that article--which freely translates as "retarded person with cancer." That probably should have been reason enough for me to give them a level 3 warning, but I refrained. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:44, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Ooo I didn't see that I didn't look deep into their history because the edit I was reverting seemed fairly good faith, if I had seen that I probably would have done more.. I agree with you completely.Jamesofur (talk) 02:08, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. It was one of those moments where I'm both happy and sad to know a vandal's language. Drmies (talk) 02:15, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
