Diagram COVID cases

Extended content

Hi. I see you deleted the chart. Don't you think it is better to have the chart that allows that can be edited directly rather than relying on images? Also, it showed the new cases per day, something not shown at the moment. We could show that in a different axis to make it clearer --Jbaranao (talk) 00:13, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

User:Jbaranao I cannot make out the new cases per day as they are soo much smaller than the total cases per day. If we want new cases per day this would be more useful. Plus the caption of a picture can contain the explanation fro Feb 17.[1] Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 00:30, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Million Award for Bipolar disorder

The Million Award
For your contributions to bring Bipolar disorder (estimated annual readership: 2,300,000) to Good Article status, I hereby present you the Million Award. Congratulations on this rare accomplishment, and thanks for all you do for Wikipedia's readers! Reidgreg (talk) 12:57, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Thank-you for your many contributions to improve this vital article! – Reidgreg (talk) 12:57, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Thanks User:Reidgreg. My involvement was fairly minor... Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 14:47, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
I'm not so certain about that. You're in the top five editors by number of edits, text added, and current authorship (link). While you may not have lead the charge on the GAN, you kept apprised of it and made edits and comments. I feel that a good portion of that GA is based on your work and with perhaps 30 million views since your first edit to the article, I felt that this should be recognized. – Reidgreg (talk) 19:17, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Sorry about that

Yes, I think the TOC limit works great now. I had just misunderstood the problem when Event cancellation was mistakenly made a "Sub-heading 1," with the result that it became this really opaque section to readers. Now it's fine. BTW, very encouraged and excited that new cases appear to be levelling off in Italy. I hope I am not speaking too soon! best, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 20:06, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

User:Shawn in Montreal no worries Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 20:07, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

TM stuff

Hi James I'm working on some of the research. My plan is to add comments and some potential rewrites over time to the discussion page, but I will wait for your input. It's a tough time right now especially for MDs so I will wait for you to have the time to take a look. No pressure; we can wait until you have the time and inclination to review the discussions. Littleolive oil (talk) 17:52, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

User:Littleolive oil we are in the middle of a global pandemic. Can we give this six months? Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 17:53, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, my point above. We can give it as long as it takes. No pressure. I'll do what I can and leave it on the talk page. I'll leave a note asking that no one make additions to the article. Nothing I leave on the talk page will be considered for addition unless there is agreement from you, and that discussion/agreement/disagreement can easily wait 6 months. I'll try to set it up so its easy to read and find whatever research is under discussion. Don't worry about it; you have more important issues to deal with. Littleolive oil (talk) 19:38, 17 March 2020 (UTC) Littleolive oil (talk) 19:38, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks User:Littleolive oil. We can get to this latter. Take care of yourself. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:59, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
You too. Littleolive oil (talk) 20:16, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Why are you making articles less accessible?

Please explain this edit. Surely you don't think that accessibility concerns need to be litigated on every single article. Do we need to have 6 million talk posts about not having red text on a green background or flashing animations on pages? Help:Scrolling list is very explicit so why is this one instance somehow exempt? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 22:34, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

User:Koavf lets keep it here. Having a 200 line table is also an accessible issue. This is about balance. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 22:37, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Would be good to address the larger issue with these sort of lists generally. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 00:22, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

(xposted with Jimbos talk page)

I know I'm taking advantage of spending more time at home by ramping up my editing of Wikipedia articles. I suspect this will be a natural inclination of some experienced editors, but perhaps we should push out some advertising to encourage casual editors or non editors to spend some time editing.

There's literally millions of person hours for people stuck at home struggling to find something to do. Let's give them an option they may not have considered.S Philbrick(Talk) 17:23, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Chloroquine and COVID-19

This is apparently Becoming a Thing on social media. Do the current additions on Chloroquine follow WP:MEDRS? Because that stuff is way out of my wheelhouse. --Calton | Talk 19:18, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Sure will take a look. At this point in time their is simple not much evidence. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 00:25, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine article are currently at C-Class

Hi! Similar to the above post about Chloroquine, The Hydroxychloroquine article is Becoming A Thing due to it's status as a potential COVID-19 treatment.

However, both articles need additions to be comprehensive (Hydroxychloroquine lacked contraindications until recently). Unfortunately this is out of my domain of experience. I've been using the Bupropion page to guide structure because it is a featured article, but not sure if there are others I should be looking at.

Metformin is another good example. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 00:25, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Covid-19: Measurements Per Capita

Many thanks indeed for all you're doing. The subject says it all, really: I think the Coronavirus Chart does a really great job; but infection density is important in order to tell us how, say, the UK is 'doing' compared with The Netherlands, the US with Canada, etc. Infections must be running at a much higher rate per capita in The Netherlands than in the UK, for example, but that isn't included. Yet nobody is saying the Brits are doing a better job! Sorry, it may mean another column....

Best regards and thanks again Jamaistroptard 08:25, 19 March 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikischpedia (talkcontribs)

Hi Doc. Since your talk page has become the unofficial COVID-19 noticeboard, I just want to point out to you and your TPSes that Chloroquine has become a mess due to COVID-19. Is there a way we can get it MEDRS compliant? --In actu (Guerillero) Parlez Moi 17:41, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Its use for COVID19 is under research and thus should be discussed in that section IMO. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 23:22, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Deaths per 10 million capita

Hi. Can I ask why you removed the 10 million per capita column without comment? Mr G (talk) 04:44, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

User:Gregcaletta were was the consensus to add it?
The discussion was already started here.[12] Please continue there. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 04:45, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
You don't need consensus to add something on Wikipedia. You need build consensus if a serious disagreement arises over something. And if you revert someones edits there needs to be a reason. Mr G (talk) 09:47, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
Yup so know that we have a disagreement we need consensus. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 23:28, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Follicular cells

Hi, I've been thinking about this one for a while. As far as I know, there are 4 types of cells in the body commonly referred to as "follicular cell". But here on WP, there is one of them, which isn't even the most common (the thyroid one), taking the base title "follicular cell". So I've written this disambiguation page and I'd like to move it to the base title, previously moving the thyroid one to a more specific name. But I don't have the necessary rights. If you agree, would you mind making the moves? Alternatively, if I had the "page mover" right I would be able to do this myself. Thanks! Dr. Vogel (talk) 11:23, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

User:DrVogel Put at Follicular cell (disambiguation) for now and then open a discussion on talk at the appropriate WikiProject.Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 14:04, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Peer review of content based on a scientific paper

Dear Doc James,

I learned about your Wikipedia medicine related editing from this article:
https://www.wired.co.uk/article/wikipedia-coronavirus

Yesterday I contributed to this Wikipedia article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_pandemic#Epidemiology

I created the following paragraph based on a paper published in Nature. Could you please figure out if I summarized the source properly?
"On 19 March 2020 a study based on data (until 29 February) from the Wuhan outbreak was published in Nature. In addition to data on the official reported cases, the study made estimates on affected individuals unknown to public knowledge. It distinguishes three groups: infected, infected with symptoms, and those who went to the hospital. A reference group is the data collected from individuals who left Wuhan from 29 January until 4 February via airports. A vague estimate on the total amount of infected people leads to a basic reproduction number of 1.94. Furthermore, it took seven days from the onset of the disease in one individual, that led to the onset of the disease in another individual in an infector-infectee relationship. The study goes on that with a basic reproductive number of two, the majority of the population will be infected, except when public health interventions are set in force among other measures."

This is now pretty much working (including refs). However the changes to the data and layout are happening so fast that I cannot get my sandboxed version up-to date, in order to implement it.

Any ideas?

Yah that is the difficulty User:Rich Farmbrough. All the countries are changing so quickly. So it is hard to keep all the individual numbers updated. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 18:06, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
It's not just the numbers... It's people changing the refs, and special casing stuff that has made this hard. I have sub-entries for the US territories and Netherlands stuff, so that's easy enough now.

Influenza article

Hello, I noticed that 10 years ago - yes, 10 years! - you SP'd the above article. Now you are a frequent editor of that article. I suggest that you either unprotect it, or stop editing it, just so there's no suggestion of a conflict of interest. Quite why any article should ever be permanently protected is beyond me, but that's another issue. Thanks. 31.52.166.119 (talk) 23:55, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

You can request unprotection through usual means. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 15:51, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
The usual means is to first contact the protecting editor. So, could you unprotect it for now? This would enable you to edit it without any conflict of interest or query as to your work. If vandalism starts again then a request, by you or anyone else, can be made to WP:RFPP. An uninvolved editor could then take a view on the request. Thanks. 31.52.166.119 (talk) 16:24, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
You can take it there and point here that you have brought it to me. That article got a large amount of vandalism and is likely too again. I do not support unprotecting at this point in time. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 16:29, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, like 10 years won't have made a difference. Forget it. I wonder how long it will be before ALL key articles are permanently SP'd? Hidden agenda or what? 31.52.166.119 (talk) 16:32, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
BTW, I strongly suggest you don't edit this article yourself while SP is in place. 31.52.166.119 (talk) 16:33, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
No not how it works. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:03, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
I think it is how it works. You are the protecting admin, even if it was 10 years ago. You therefore need to recuse yourself from the article, just as other admins do when they effect protection. Anything less and it could be argued that you excluded IP editors to enable your view to prevail. 31.52.166.119 (talk) 22:57, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Anonymous, Doc James has things to do right now that don't involve prolonging this conversation. Please take it to the other venue as suggested. ☆ Bri (talk) 23:37, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

COVID total cases graph

Hey, just wanted to let you know that I uploaded a vector version of [2] and tagged your file as having a vector version, as suggested on commons. I also included the new file in the main article on current pandemic. Since I'm not too good with licenses and whatnot, just wanted you to know so you can check it out, and see if everything fits - that I haven't infringed your intellectual property or something. Thanks! byteflush Talk 05:03, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

User:Byteflush how do you crop .svgs? Our crop tool does not appear to be able and thus why I use .pngs. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 15:03, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Well, I didn't really crop it; I downloaded the SVG from OVID and then manually deleted stuff above and below the graph (in a text editor). It's not really a user friendly process, but it would take me about 5 minutes to do it now that I know what to remove from where. The side effect is that there is more white area around the graph than it should, and I'm looking for a way to fix that. byteflush Talk 20:54, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
