Townlands

[edit]

Hiya. And welcome. A couple of quick notes:

  • There are well over 60,000 townlands in Ireland. Many of them very small. With no population. Others are within towns and other settlements or civil parishes for which we already have articles. Not every small plot of land needs its own article. See WP:GEOLAND. (In short, if all you can write about a subject is that it exists on a map, has an area and borders other similar places on a map, consider where it needs its own article.)
  • "Square miles" is a measure of area. Not a measure of distance. A townland shouldn't be described as being "within 0.79 square miles" of somewhere. See Area.
  • This webpage does not not state that St Brigid's Well is in Ballinive townland. As claimed. Because it is not. St Brigid's well and church (as covered in RPS records WM024-054002-, WM024-054003-, WM024-054004-, WM024-054005- and WM024-054006-) are clearly and verifiably in Killarecastle townland (west of Killarechurch townland). And NOT in Ballinive. Please do not misrepresent sources. See also WP:DISRUPTSIGNS.

Thanks. Guliolopez (talk) 23:46, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Two quick follow-ups. On my note(s) above about:
  • WP:GEOLAND - It is worth recognising that, for the proposed Draft:Ballinwire article, the subject townland has no population, no houses (occupied or unoccupied), no NIAH entries, no RPS entries, no RMP entries, or anything else of note. Without anything to be said about the people, history, structures or archaeology of the place, what is the value in an article on these two fields?
  • WP:VER - It is worth noting that, where the townlands.ie entry for this small townland states "Ballinwire has an area of [..] 0.41 square miles", this cannot possibly be read as supporting text which states "Ballinwire [..] is located within 0.41 miles west of the village of Tyrrellspass". Not only is there no connection between the (stated) area and the (claimed) distance, but the source doesn't mention Tyrrellspass, a direction to it, or anything else. Please stop morphing area into distance. And imagining or representing that this website states or supports these types of assertions. It just doesn't.
