Sports and opera
[edit]Yeah, it's weird. All it really means is that I can't get my music friends to go to a game with me, and I can't get my sports friends to go to an opera with me.
You did make me wonder whether it's possible to make a sports opera that either group would really want to see, though. :) Microtonal 03:18, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello Deebkie!
[edit]I see you've added your name to the Project Buddhism list. If you've any interest in Zen you could add some nominations to the Zen collaboration page - I've just started it and so far I'm the only one who's added any nominations, so it's a bit lonely looking at the moment, and of course, you'd have the honour of being the first poster after the page author! Rentwa 15:49, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm new to this and it took me a while to find you. Different versions of your name didn't help. (I hope I've got the right person.) Yes, I know a lot about Buddhism, in a haphazard way, and I'd be happy to receive any questions from you and see whether I can answer them. Peter jackson 10:21, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

The current name of Chah is never used to refer to Ajahn Chah, and it is actually considered impolite in Thailand to call a monk by just his name. Not putting any polite word in front of 'Chah' is considered a form of abuse... So in English it's become part of his name, 'Chah' is never used on its own. Also, 'Ajahn' is not even honorific, just a recognition that he was a teacher. Ajahn Chah's official honorific name is Chao Khun Bodhinyanathera. Any monk can be called Ajahn. Greetings, Sacca 03:49, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Ajahn Chah
[edit]Hi, Deeb, I came to this talk page after looking at recent edits to Ajahn Chah. I've also read the correspondence between you and Sacca, and I'd like to give my opinion. Normally, it is indeed Wikipedia policy that religious figures should be listed under their names without titles. However, this is not enforced without exceptions. The Catholic Popes are an exception, for instance; this is not out of a particular desire to honour them, but for the practical reason that they often use fairly common names and it becomes necessary to include "Pope" in order ot distinguish them (the same rationale as our naming convention for kings). I have intended for a long time—so far without fruit—to propose a general policy for naming non-Western religious figures. The gist of my proposal is going to be that we must use the simplest form of the name—i.e. without titles—except when that makes the name difficult to recognise. An additional exception, I suppose, is if the unadorned name sounds positively insulting, rather than simply neutral. "Ajahn Chah" probably qualifies as an exception on the first count (as well as the second if Sacca is correct). In the case of Ayya (Ajahn) Tataaloka Bhikkhuni, on second thought, I don't know for sure which titles if any are necessary. Please note that my suggested policy is not consistently enforced on Wikipedia, although I hope it eventually will be. There are still a lot of Tibetan lamas, for instance, who have "Rinpoche" in the titles of their articles, which I don't think is really necessary.
In any event, it's important that we move articles by using the "move page" function, not by executing a Wikipedia:Cut-and-paste move. Deebki, can you please undo the cut-and-paste that you did to Chah?—Nat Krause(Talk!) 05:20, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- (BTW, cut and paste move was the only option, since the page already existed) Certainly, Nat. I'd be most happy to undo that move (I was chagrinned to make the move initially). I'd like the articles to be consistently named, which ever way is correct. Do you have a discussion page about your naming proposal? I'm very eager to see a policy set. If using full titles is correct, how 'bout if you correct the changes you made to the name of the article on Ajahn Tataaloka and I'll revert the other changes I've made to titles, too? Sacca is absolutely correct. It is, indeed, a great insult not to use an Ajahn's title. I was about to change the name of Ayya Tataaloka to Ajahn Tataaloka when you moved it to the non-honorific name. Deebki 05:44, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- Her name is apparently spelled Tathaaloka, and so I have moved the article to Ayya Tathaaloka. I didn't see any sources outside of Wikipedia that are using "Ajahn Tathaaloka"; we should wait until other sources are using that name before we start using it. By the way, my proposal hasn't really been proposed yet, so there's no discussion page for it yet. I'll notify you of future developments—Nat Krause(Talk!) 07:06, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Hello Deeb,
Good to see its resolved now, I saw the article Tataaloka previously, and didn't know what it referred to until I started reading the article.
Ajahn, by the way, is used for all kinds of teachers, also high-school teachers for example. So the category Ajahns could include anybody who's a teacher in any subject in Thailand, also. Ajahn in our current context (monks) however refers to any (senior) monk in the Thai Theravada Tradition (inluding foreigners), and so is distinguished from category:Thai monk Greetings, Sacca 06:01, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Hello Deeb, Ayya is not used in Thailand, as you probably know there's only a very small number of 'real' Thai nuns now, most Thai female monastics are 8-precept nuns who wear white clothing. They are technically not nuns like a samaneri or bhikkhuni is. Ayya is a Pali term, I think, and originally used in Sri Lanka for nuns (that's where Ayya Khema got it from, I think). I looked it up in a pali dictionary [1] and it means something like honourable or worthy. In current practical use, however, it's only used for nuns.
Ajahn is the Thai version of the Pali word acariya, which means teacher also.Greetings, Sacca 07:07, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Vinaya
[edit]The division of labour you suggest sounds sensible in principle. Certainly I'm not up to the technical stuff (yet). By "six" schools, do you mean those with a complete surviving Vinaya Pitaka? I'm not sure how much detailed information there is available about them. I'll have a look around, but that may take some time. Peter jackson 11:00, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
I wasn't thinking of lots of research myself, rather, as you originally suggested, pointing to sources for you to look at. I soon discovered that there seem to be a very large number of interlinked, overlapping, and contradictory articles on Buddhism, so I'm trying to focus mainly on what I know best, the Pali Canon. I've been expanding the main article, trying to model it mutatis mutandis on the Bible one. Once I've got it into reasonable shape I can start on the articles on individual books of the Canon, some of which don't even exist yet. I'll probably start with the Vinaya as that comes first, so I might be doing something to help you there. Meanwhile, some information that comes to mind, which you might or might not know already. As far as I know only one of the six Vinayas has been translated: 'The Book of the Discipline', tr. IB Horner, 1938-66, 6 vols., Pali Text Society. Actually, even this is not quite a complete translation, as about six pages of expurgated material are given in Pali. It's also full of mistakes. The Dharmaguptaka and Nahasanghika Vinayas are included in the BDK translation project, and you might try finding out how that's getting on. The Bhikshuni Vibhanga of the Dharmaguptakas has been translated: you can find this on the Wisdom Books website. An outline of the contents of all six Vinayas is given in Lamotte's 'History of Indian Buddhism'. One other book you might find interesting and/or useful is 'Controversies over Buddhist Nuns', Pali Text Society, by a Chinese nun whose name I forget: details at www.palitext.com. I think that's all for now. Peter jackson 09:28, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
Sigalovada Sutta's inherent gender bias
[edit]Hi Deeb - Having seen your strong commitment to WP Buddhism and to eliminate gender-bias in WP articles, I was wondering if you might have any advice or contributions for the Sigalovada Sutta article. Like many Buddhist householder-related articles, when it comes to addressing marriage, this canonical sutta addresses the listener as a 5th-century B.C.E. husband. In the edits I made to this particular article, I felt compelled to reflect the original androcentric context, but I was hoping you might know of some contemporary gender-neutral Buddhist interpretations of this sutta or might provide some wisdom on how to avoid having this important cultural artifact perpetuate heterosexist realities. Thanks for any help, LarryR 15:38, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Deebki - Thanks for the kind reply. If you get a chance and you come across something pertinent, a pointer or two would be much appreciated. Thanks again & welcome back. Best wishes, LarryR 17:29, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Deeb,
I am also looking for information on Kimerly Carr-Cavallo, who claims to be a relative of Joe F. Carr, first president of the NFL. I am currently writting a book on Joe Carr, and have found no relation between Carr-Cavallo and Joe Carr what so over. Any information on her is rather hard to find other than she is wealthy by marriage, lives near Atlanta, Ga. and is involved in professional womens polo. Hope to hear from you if you find anything on her like a "bio". Oct. 19, 2006.

- Cool. There's this department called Wikipedia:Third opinion. It's designed to help break arguments between pairs of Wikipedian's locked in mortal combat over the articles they are working on. This department is running really slow right now, which means that perhaps people aren't being made aware of it. You could help by placing links to this department in relevant locations around Wikipedia. Once the department starts getting more requests, you could then jump in and provide third opinions. I hope you like this suggestion. The Transhumanist 10:18, 1 November 2006 (UTC) --Please post further questions and replies on the Admin school's main page. Thank you.

Image:Sheryl swoopes 242.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Sheryl swoopes 242.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mosmof 09:15, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Ajahn Thaniya, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Speeding of articles for zero content
[edit]Hi. Just FYI, you may find it easier to create these articles like Reykjavík Theater Company in your User: space and then move them into the mainspace, or create them with just a line to establish some content. If you place a release under the CC-BY-SA and GFDL at the bottom of the Dhammawiki page, that will be sufficient. – Toon 17:44, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
Hi Toon. This BLP article was originally written on Wikipedia (Sept 2006)
[edit]...but mistakenly deleted by User:Kingturtle for not being a notable person (poorly researched conclusion by admin). It has been both plagerized and quoted by other websites. More content was added to the original article, citing that Ayya Tathaaloka had been recognized by the United Nations with an award, and the article re-created. The article was wrongly targeted for copyright violation in 2009, when Ayya Tathaaloka was in the news. That could have been a somewhat understandable Admin error, since the page history was not visible w/o doing some research into logs. However, such a mistake should be corrected immediately, either by researching the history in Wikipedia logs or looking at the Dhammawiki article (http://www.dhammawiki.com/index.php?title=Ayya_Tathaaloka) that cites Wikipedia 2006 as the original work. There was controversy after the 2009 Australia/Thailand events in which Ayya Tathaaloka participated. So, this article may also be a candidate for protection. Speedy deletion nomination of Saranaloka Foundation
[edit]A tag has been placed on Saranaloka Foundation requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference
[edit]Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.
On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true
. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false
in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.
For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.
Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:12, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

HighBeam
[edit]Hello, I am sending this message to editors who signed up for the Women's History Month Edit-a-thon. Please help spread the word. HighBeam Research--an online, pay-for-use search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias has agreed to give free, full-access, 1-year accounts for up to 1000 Wikipedia editors to use. HighBeam has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam would cost $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years, so this is a wonderful, free, no-strings-attached opportunity. To qualify, editors must have at least a 1 year-old account with 1000 edits. Please add your name to the WP:HighBeam/Applications account sign-up page if you are interested. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:37, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

The article Sveinn Einarsson has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Non notable theatre director
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Jezhotwells (talk) 16:10, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Help build the free encyclopedia icon set that anyone in the world can share and reuse! Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. [edit]The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather at Bay Area WikiSalon to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.
We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have:
- A brief report on Pride edit-a-thon recently held at the San Francisco Publice Library, coordinated by Merrilee:
- What topics might we cover in a follow up?
- Find out more about resources your public library provides to help with editing (hint, it's more than just books!)
- Special announcement (secret for now but come and find out more!)
- Join in on an in person Wikidojo!
- Are you curious how your peers approach writing a Wikipedia article? This exercise, pioneered by Wikipedians Nikola Kalchev and Vassia Atanassova in 2015 and conducted in many places around the world, will help us all - from first-time wiki users to veteran Wikipedians - share ideas, while building an article together. If you have ideas (relating to Bay Area history, ideally) about a new article we could build (stubs and short existing articles are fine), please submit them ahead of time to coordinator Pete Forsyth. (User talk page or email is fine.)
- Announcements and impromptu topics are welcome, too!
Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict.

Come and hang out, have some light snacks. Wi-Fi is available, so please bring your editing device if you plan to edit.

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.
We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have a brief presentation for your education and possible enjoyment:

[edit]Hi folks,
We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, Wikipedia and Wikimedia enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.
We will have no formal agenda to allow people to freely share ideas and perhaps learn about Wikipedia through hands-on editing. Co-organizer Ben Creasy will be looking at election-related articles to enhance the information available in the upcoming November elections.
Co-organizer Stephen LaPorte has suggested doing an upload-a-thon for Wiki Loves Monuments. Niki, the California coordinator for WLM will be in attendance. WLM is an annual event and the official dealine is Friday the 30th for submissions to count towards awards.
Or, you can grab a couch, a booth, or a stool and do your own thing.
