Your turn of phrase
[edit]Greetings, Davidevanthomas. It was nice to meet you on Wikipedia Day. Would you please remind me what you called contemporary naming practice? Sorry I forgot. I said, "I like English names." You said, ? Best wishes, -SusanLesch (talk) 15:13, 9 March 2019 (UTC) Hi Susan, Good to meet you too, and apologies for taking so long to respond. I'm not used to communicating via Wikipedia and don't check my bell-icon enough—is this the way to do it? I don't remember what I said! It couldn't have been memorable. Hope to see you at another event. -David
- Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote the lead article for The New York Times magazine series The 1619 Project which examines the legacy of slavery in America. Ms. Hannah-Jones explained that names aren't created to please my ears. "Black naming practices, so often impugned by mainstream society, are themselves an act of resistance. Our last names belong to the white people who once owned us. That is why the insistence of many black Americans, particularly those most marginalized, to give our children names that we create, that are neither European nor from Africa, a place we have never been, is an act of self-determination." I stand corrected. How wonderful to learn something.[1]
- Just announced, Hannah-Jones won a Pulitzer Prize for that article! -SusanLesch (talk) 21:44, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Lydia Purdy Hess
[edit]On 17 April 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Lydia Purdy Hess, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that American artist Lydia Purdy Hess, best known for her Portrait of Miss E. H., sketched and painted while floating on the Ohio River during her two-month honeymoon? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Lydia Purdy Hess. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Lydia Purdy Hess), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
