Arumbaya lingo deciphered
Dear Das Baz, Thank you so much for the extremely helpful comment about the lingo the Arumbaya tribe speaks in The Broken Ear - I thought Tintologists had traced it to "Marols" the Brussels (Flemish) dialect Hergé would have heard from his grandmother, but you're right. I added it to the Dutch site on The Broken Ear - may I ask if there's any written source or did you discover it yourself? Hats off! "I told you to hit the flipping ball into the hole! And that don't mean his flipping earhole!" Quite risqué for the former Boy Scout... Best wishes, Frank Landsman (talk) 13:16, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Dear Frank, Have to confess - I am not sure. I think I figured out when I read aloud what the Arumbaya Chief was saying - and realized he was talking Cockney. But there is a chance my memory was playing tricks on me and I could have read somewhere, and then forgotten I read it, that Cockney in the English translation corresponds to Marols in the French original. Either way, alas, I cannot provide a source. Thank you anyway. And thanks for the laugh! Das Baz, aka Erudil 15:41, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Dear Das Baz, I just received an email from a real Tintologist named Paul Durdin and he confirmed that Tintin's English translators Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper & Michael Turner cleverly substituted Cockney for the Marollien/Marols used in the French original. The only phrase I couldn't figure out was "Cohrluv ahduk!" on p.52 - Cor (as in cor blimey!)love a duck? As the Marx Brothers mused while passing a viaduct, "Yes, why a duck?". Btw, if you're interested in Nathanael West, I'll send you my thesis, lots of stuff on comics and S.J. Perelman as well. Cheers then, Frank Landsman (talk) 17:03, 29 May 2008 (UTC) Why a duck? I think it may be Cockney rhyming slang. What rhymes with duck? Das Baz, aka Erudil 18:29, 12 March 2016 (UTC) You may send a message to Chikuku52@yahoo.com and it may eventually make its way to Das Baz. Or not. Das Baz, aka Erudil 18:29, 12 March 2016 (UTC) Hi Das Baz, I left you a note on my talk page -thanks. Frank Landsman (talk) 16:24, 2 June 2008 (UTC) Ok, just mail me at FrankieboyfrankATgmailDOTcom and I'll mail you "Nathanael West's American Nightmare Factory" - thanks for you interest. Frank Landsman (talk) 15:27, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Or leave your email address at my Talk Page or send it to http://www.myspace.com/masfrank if that's safer. Cheers! Frank Landsman (talk) 17:16, 11 June 2008 (UTC) PS I don't think it's Tintin's double, incidentally. It looks more like Hergé himself, as in the sixth panel of The Broken Ear. But you're right in the sense that Hergé famously identified himself with Tintin by saying "Tintin, c'est moi". The absent-minded professor on page 6 reappears as Colonel Juanitos on p.35, the portrait of the moustachioed man on p.4 is shown as a vase on p. 57 (in the shop window), etc. I hereby acknowledge the indispensable aid of my children (aged 5 and 10) who drew my attention to all this. Pls send me your email address, so I can mail you the Westiana. Thanks and keep up the good work Frank Landsman (talk) 13:43, 19 June 2008 (UTC) Good evening Das Baz, I'm afraid there's no email address to be found in your Tool Box, so where do I send my research on West? I noticed you've written on Alexander the Great - my son is named Alexander Agung, the Indonesian version of that name... Cheers, Frank Landsman (talk) 13:58, 2 July 2008 (UTC) Hellooooo? Anybody there? Pls contact me on my Talk Page, so I can send you the thesis. Thanks, Frank Landsman (talk) 15:12, 26 August 2008 (UTC) Dear La Baz, Just found your kind note from last January - I'll send you my thesis on West straightaway from my gmail - sincere apologies for the delay! Haven't been overly active as a Wikipedian (the French Academy would surely prefer Wikipedist)this year, I'm afraid.Cheers and keep up the good work, am currently reading Tintin's adventures in Indonesian to my 7-year-old son, Penculikan Lakmus, better known to you as the Calculus affair. I had forgotten that the semi-deaf prof was trained in Savate, a fact my son remembered from Flight 714. So his legitimate question is "Why did't prof. Calculus make mincemeat of his kidnappers?". In Dutch he's called prof. Zonnebloem (Sunflower), funnily enough.Frankly speaking (talk) 08:20, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
