Administrators' newsletter – October 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2022).
- Following an RfC, consensus was found that if the rationale for a block depends on information that is not available to all administrators, that information should be sent to the Arbitration Committee, a checkuser or an oversighter for action (as applicable, per ArbCom's recent updated guidance) instead of the administrator making the block.
- Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.
- Community comment on the revised Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines is requested until 8 October.
- The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. If you wish to help out at AFC, enable AFCH by navigating to Preferences → Gadgets and checking the "Yet Another AfC Helper Script" box.
- Remedy 8.1 of the Muhammad images case will be rescinded 1 November following a motion.
- A modification to the deletion RfC remedy in the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been made to reaffirm the independence of the RfC and allow the moderators to split the RfC in two.
- The second phase of the 2021-22 Discretionary Sanctions Review closes 3 October.
- An administrator's account was recently compromised. Administrators are encouraged to check that their passwords are secure, and reminded that ArbCom reserves the right to not restore adminship in cases of poor account security. You can also use two-factor authentication (2FA) to provide an extra level of security.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections open 2 October and close 8 October.
- You are invited to comment on candidates in the 2022 CUOS appointments process.
- An RfC is open to discuss whether to make Vector 2022 the default skin on desktop.
- Tech tip: You can do a fuzzy search of all deleted page titles at Special:Undelete.
ArbCom EC
Hi Cyberpower678, I see you were on the ArbCom election commission last year. The nominations for this year's EC close in 2 days, and so far we have one nomination, and they've never been on the EC before. Would you consider joining them on the nomination page? IMHO, the EC should have at least one person who has done it before, so we don't lose institutional memory, and can pass it down to newbies who join this year. I guess it looks like you're not terribly active these days, so maybe this doesn't fit with your schedule this year. But I hope you have the time and the inclination. --Floquenbeam (talk) 22:04, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
- More like I've been so busy that I haven't had an opportunity to check in recently. IABot had a multi-wiki meltdown recently, and my Masters program is also keeping me busy. I will happily nominate myself.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 22:45, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Regarding an image
Hello, Cyberpower678, I hope you are well. I firstly wanted to apologise again for what happened last time we spoke, it was a complete misunderstanding, and I panicked that I had done something wrong. I actually wanted to discuss that subject again as it never really got resolved. The image in the file is not used anywhere on this Wiki, it is on 2 other languages Wikipedias and is available at commons. I suggested deletion here since it is not used and therefore shouldn’t really be needed. Hence why I suggested deletion here and not on commons. I am a bit inexperienced with files so your help is greatly appreciated. Redrose64 courtesy ping as you were also involved. Any help would be appreciated. Maybe we can just leave it on commons and just delete it locally? Thanks. Blanchey (talk) 11:13, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
Minor tweak request for Template:Cratstats
It would be helpful for {{Cratstats}} to have a working /doc subpage so that the page could have documentation and categories. Would it be possible for you to modify the bot so that it ignored a noinclude/doc/noinclude statement at the end of the template? Thanks for considering it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:27, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Bot task description
Hello friend. Was wondering if you might be willing to update the userpage of User:Cyberbot I, for the Clerks at AfDs. This task has been converted to PHP.
task, to also mention that it restores removed AFD notices from articles. I've ended up on this page a couple times trying to see if this was the bot that did it and the missing info added a couple minutes to my search. If not no worries. Thanks. By the way that page is template editor protected. –Novem Linguae (talk) 12:09, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
Addition to {{RfPP}}
I've added a new code, {{RfPP|notp}}/{{RfPP|notprot}} to the template.

Request for input on new bot for fixing dead links
I am a faculty member in Computer Science at the University of Michigan. I am reaching out to you for two reasons.
First, I thought I'll point out to you a paper that my students and I recently published, in which we analyzed links that have been marked as permanently dead by InternetArchiveBot. I have previously shared this paper with Mark Graham, @GreenC, and others. But, if you have any particular questions or comments, please let us know.
Second, and more importantly, I am hoping to get your feedback on a new bot that my students and I are looking to develop for fixing broken links. For about a couple of years now, we have been developing a system that we call FABLE. Given a broken link, FABLE attempts to find the new URL at which the same page now exists. A brief description about our project is at https://webresearch.eecs.umich.edu/fable/
As a first step, we plan to use our system to build a bot that will patch links that have been marked permanently dead. About a month and half ago, I made a post at about this proposal. Based on the feedback, we then created a page which listed a random sample of the permanently dead links for which our system was able to find the new URL. Some Wikipedia users reviewed what our system found. Based on the numbers, our accuracy is around 90%.
Now, we are considering how our bot should operate, given that it is right most of the time but not always (which I expect will always be the case, no matter how much we improve our algorithms). Inspired by one of the comments made on my initial post, for any link for which we have found a replacement, we are thinking that we can edit the article to make the replacement and leave a "verification needed" tag. Alternatively, we could edit the article in a manner similar to InternetArchiveBot, except that our edit would say "Migrated from the original" instead of "Archived from the original". Or, we could even combine the two approaches.
Given your considerable experience in developing and administering bots for Wikipedia, do you have any recommendations? We would greatly appreciate your input. Thank you! HarshaMadhyastha (talk) 15:39, 28 September 2022 (UTC)
- @HarshaMadhyastha: My apologies, I meant to reply to this sooner, but ended up forgetting to do so. The easier approach would be to change the URL and tag it with "Verification needed" as the latter approach requires modification of existing templates. In addition to that, other automated processes may get confused by the presence of two differing URLs, like InternetArchiveBot, and will treat them differently, see one of them is dead, and it will start a bot warring loop. Important considerations to be made are changing references to the specific URL, like archive URLs. I hope this helps. I'm a member of the Bot Approvals Group on the English Wikipedia, so let me know if you need help here.—CYBERPOWER (Around) 22:16, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

IABot Management Interface
Hi,
I don't think the "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)" is working at all because I tried it several times with different articles and it did not rescue any links (sources). — YoungForever(talk) 07:45, 20 November 2022 (UTC)
Allowing modified adminstats for non-admins
Hi @Cyberpower678! Hope you're doing well. I understand the justification for disallowing non-admins/account creators to use the {{adminstats}} template, (Cyberbot might be overloaded with the amount of users), but it'd be interesting if the bot code is tweaked to allow for a separate version for non-admins (without the deletion, protection, block, etc statistics). As there is currently no bot that can automatically update edit counts, I think that this would be immensely useful (for evidence of real-world need, see this Teahouse thread). Cheers, and thanks! 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk) 05:58, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

Cyberbot I no longer archives WP:Requests for page protection
Sorry to bother you, but the situation is becoming semi-desperate. Cyberbot last archived protection requests at 01:29, 26 January 2023 (UTC), and as the notice board sees a fair bit of traffic (more than 30 kb per day average), the pileup is significant. What's worse is that the backlog of unhandled requests appears to have grown significantly during the past five days, indicating that reviewers are being "discouraged" by the seemingly overwhelming list. Some of us are shoveling out handled requests, but it's both tedious and error-prone, and obviously not a viable solution.
I fully appreciate the nature and limitations of volunteer work, but we need to find a way forward.
Previously, a message was left here by Lectonar, but it was automatically archived a few hours ago. In other words, complaints about a bot get archived by – another bot. The Singularity is upon us! - It hasn't updated the admin stats for a few days, either. Last time it stopped working the admin stats fell off first, then some of the other tasks. Looks like the same thing again. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:14, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Cyberbot I edit conflict removes new requests
Just recently, I made a request to WP:RPP only to find Cyberbot I removed it in archiving other requests. This suggests the bot had an edit conflict and preferred its own version, which did not include my request placed at the same time. I was using Twinkle to request; I don't know if a fix will affect other automated tools like RedWarn, etc., but maybe there's a way to fix the bot to not remove requests it did not mean to remove?
