Bug in InternetArchiveBot's URL handling

In this edit InternetArchiveBot did not correctly parse the URL https://ideasec.nbc.gov/j2ee/printannouncement.jsp;jsessionid=7550E6C0DF8AF0CD0B76AC964492BD48?objId=4795916&serverId=NP144302. It output an incorrect Internet Archive URL of https://web.archive.org/web/20051211102357/http://ideasec.nbc.gov:80/j2ee/printannouncement.jsp? as a replacement. Note that the URL parsing broke when it encountered a semicolon in the URL (which is permissible in the http/https URL schemes as a query string separator). It should have output a functional IA URL like this working archived version of the URL. —RP88 (talk) 00:11, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Please file a bug on Phabricator and add the project InternetArchiveBot.—cyberpowerChat:Offline 00:21, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
Most wikipedia editors don't have accounts on Phabricator or have any idea how to report a bug there; fortunately I do. I think you're much more likely to end up with bug reports if you create the bug report on Phabricator yourself and then link to it in your response in case the original editor wants to add additional comments. Fortunately, I have an account and can do as you ask (see phab:T151181). —RP88 (talk) 00:40, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
I've went a few days into the history of this page to find a few places where in response to someone reporting a bug in InternetArchiveBot to you asked them to file a bug in Phabricator, but no such bug report was filed. The new bugs are: phab:T151182, phab:T151183, phab:T151184, and phab:T151185. I'm a little concerned that if I could find four, that there may be many more bugs that are not getting recorded. I don't think you can expect WP editors to know what you mean when you say "file a bug on Phabricator". If creating bug reports yourself is too much work, you should probably be linking to FAQ entry somewhere that tells them how to create an account on Phabricator and how to use it to report a bug. —RP88 (talk) 01:20, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
If they don't know how to use Phabricator, they're free to ask me to file the report. I just have to find the opportunity to do it. As for the FaQ, that will go under the Report a Bug page on the IABot GUI I'm working on.—cyberpowerChat:Offline 02:01, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
As a side note, all accounts on Phabricator are OAuth based, meaning they are created and linked from/to your Wikipedia account. No signup needed.—cyberpowerChat:Offline 02:03, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the update about a GUI for reporting IABot bugs. With regards to Phabricator, despite supporting OAuth to a Wikimedia account, Phabricator does require account creation the first time (you have to choose an all-Latin user name, supplying an email address is required, etc.), but maybe this is just semantics about what is "account creation".. —RP88 (talk) 02:16, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Cyberpower678. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot - Chinchimane

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that I undid this bot edit and fixed the link rot. Not sure if the tag [permanent dead link] will discourage people from trying on their own... achieved the opposite with me ;) Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 15:40, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

How is allafrica an archive URL?—cyberpowerChat:Online 16:19, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
Well, maybe mirror, republisher, or something else. By inserting the url to its entry I enable the reader to access the article in its original wording, is that nothing worthwhile? --Pgallert (talk) 20:09, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
In which case change the |url= and |newspaper= because the citation has changed, it's now citing a different newspaper (even if the content is the same). Also what happens when allafrica.com goes dead (it will eventually), where would one put the archive url for allafrica.com? -- GreenC 20:54, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

False negatives in Camel (band)

I've turned back a change done by the InternetArchiveBot in Camel (band) since the original links were working fine.--Gorpik (talk) 11:57, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

I've done the same in Chicago Pile-1 [1]. The link is not dead. The archive URL is left over from the last time the Bot got it wrong, back in April. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:38, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot - Citizenship Clause

Hi. Regarding this edit made to the Citizenship Clause article — the new archive link is correct, but the link was incorrectly placed before a trailing italic mark and period. I fixed the edit. — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 18:31, 25 November 2016 (UTC)

Sorry that's not something that can be fixed.—cyberpowerChat:Offline 00:49, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot

Hello there, I wanted to ask if there is a way to do archiving of all the references cited on a specific page using User:InternetArchiveBot? --Saqib (talk) 06:57, 25 November 2016 (UTC)

Soon. This tool is in active development.—cyberpowerChat:Offline 03:56, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi - I have fixed two places where your bot replaced a valid link on the article for Yoho National Park. I have added a comment to the talk page to explain the edits I made in response to your bot's edits. Mtobey 12:10, 18 Oct 2016 (UTC)

Error

User:cyberbot II has not only removed the tags but also blanked the pages of Pencil case and Weekend at Bernie's. regards, DRAGON BOOSTER 17:28, 16 November 2016 (UTC).

I assumed the bot should be right and removed the tag of the article Weekend at Bernie's, which has protection till 15:14, 11 April 2017 (UTC). regards, DRAGON BOOSTER 18:02, 16 November 2016 (UTC).

Hi, the bot added 5 archive links on this page. 4 of them were working fine so I set the sourcecheck to true. Regarding the fifth one, " Added archive https://web.archive.org/web/20150206111318/http://www.vatican.va// to http://www.vatican.va/ ", the archived page appears to be just a copy of the home page of the Vatican without scripts (so the dynamic things showing on the home page don't get archived, as often happens with archive.org). Technically, the bot also worked here in that the syntax isn't broken/ link isn't dead but I doubt that the archive page captured whatever was supposed to be archived, if indeed the archive is to the correct page (I noted in the article there was some PDF referenced that was on Vatican site but the archive link was just to the main home page rather than the PDF page). I'm not sure if this counts as a bug, but reporting it for the sake of completeness only. Cheers, TheBlinkster (talk) 10:17, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

A new tool for you :-)

@Bgwhite, Magioladitis, RP88, Gorpik, Hawkeye7, Graham87, Mtobey, and Rfassbind: Just letting you know that two new pages in the IABot tool are now available which should be of help to you. This can be used to report false positives and immediately reset URL data for lingering old false positives. This page helps a user file a bug report so they won't be forgotten.—cyberpowerChat:Online 17:09, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I noticed that the "Report a bug" text says "make sure the edit you are reporting about has the current version, v1.0alpha3," but the current version being reported by the bot (as of its edit a minute ago) is actually "v1.2.7.1". —RP88 (talk) 17:29, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
The interface doesn't work with 1.2. So it currently has the new bot v1.3 loaded instead. I'll fix it when I get home.—cyberpowerChat:Online 17:43, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
And for that matter, it's showing the GUI version number and not the loaded bot version.—cyberpowerChat:Online 17:45, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

Change with syntax error in references

In this change the InternetArchiveBot replaced a <references> tag by a <ref> tag which results in a reference section with invalid syntax. I've fixed that section, please fix your bot, too! Best regards --GünniX (talk) 10:09, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot and WP:CITEVAR

I'm sure this topic has been discussed before, so forgive me if I am repeating a topic that has been discussed by others. In a recent edit, InternetArchiveBot added a template to Circuit split. Unfortunately, the template ruined the formatting of the Bluebook style references that were in use in the article. Per WP:CITEVAR, the formatting of the references should not be changed without consensus. Is there a way to add some sort of tag or template to articles so that InternetArchiveBot does not introduce new templates into the references? Perhaps instead it can simply leave a notice about potentially dead links on the talkpage? For the record, I am in favor of archiving links when possible, but I am also in favor of not disrupting existing citation conventions in articles (especially GAs and FAs). In any event, thanks so much for all your hard work on this encyclopedia, and I hope all is well. Best, -- Notecardforfree (talk) 21:14, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

Tag the references with {{cbignore}} or just replace those links with its archive. The bot will go away.—cyberpowerChat:Limited Access 21:19, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
Sounds good. Thanks for the prompt reply! Best, -- Notecardforfree (talk) 21:24, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

Greetings, InternetArchiveBot incorrectly marked a valid link to proquest.com, a subscription site, on an article for Jack in the Box as dead. Unless InternetArchiveBot has a subscription access, InternetArchiveBot should should skip links to these sites since readers accessing the article from a library should not have any problems accessing those links as long as the library has a subscription. 96.94.230.14 (talk) 06:10, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

It generally does and this was probably just a rare exception.—cyberpowerChat:Limited Access 21:41, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi~ In this edit of Dia_(moon), InternetArchiveBot marked a link as "permanent dead link", but the link seemed to work fine for me. Zeniff (talk) 04:11, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

There's a current ongoing problem in the labs environment where that site comes back dead due to a lack of response from the server. It's possible labs, where the bot lives, is blacklisted. I'm working on a workaround for that.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 14:37, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

Multiple IA Bot issues

  1. reporting bugs does not work, I got a login page. IIRC I have no WMFlabs account, certainly no phab account, and I'm not using my global MW account for a year, minimum.
  2. original issue reported on Talk:Baen_Free_Library#External_links_modified.
  3. why on earth do you want other bot issues on your talk page instead of the bot talk page?

193.96.224.16 (talk) 14:04, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

  1. That's not an issue. Accounts are required to prevent abuse. This is why those that can't follow those instructions due to those restrictions can still leave me a message here.
  2. You reported a non-issue. If it's empty, it won't do anything. That's a date format parameter users can easily fill to change the date formats of the citation.
  3. I don't monitor other talk pages as I do my own. Keeping all my conversations in one place is ideal for me.
Cheers.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 14:41, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

FYI: Regular hits on InternetArchiveBot

Hi Cyberpower678 and @Kaldari:. Just wanted to let you know that the archive bot is showing up on a regular basis at Special:Log/Spamblacklist (18 times last 30 days). I have cleaned up a couple where I could remove the spam url, though others are more integral. Not sure whether it matters to you, just passing the message on. If it does matter or your have suggestions, please let me know.

Interestingly the bot does show an interesting progression through enWP, and it will be a long time until we get back to the start to repeat the process. — billinghurst sDrewth 01:07, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

It's not avoidable. IABot has no clue what's on the blacklist, and will unfortunately not be able to. On the other hand, IABot is only running at 1/28th of it's maximum speed on enwiki, so....—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 01:09, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Recent problems with the Wayback Machine

The Wayback Machine has been hit or miss lately (since December 3, at least in my experience) and this may be affecting InternetArchiveBot so please check that bots edits (at least selectively). Regards. – Allen4names (contributions) 22:11, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

Most of the archives, are probably already stored on IABot's internal DB. So there isn't much need for worrying. :-)—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 22:17, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi, "fellow Wikipedian".

There are many ways of introducing yourself, but I feel the one which your bot has chosen is perhaps one of the most annoying possible. Most bots just do their jobs quietly and unobtrusively, but yours (although does its job very well) leaps out as if it wanted very much to be a close personal friend rather than just a background process. We are all in involved WP, but I'm afraid your bot's greeting simply gets my goat, and I find myself disinclined (or even discouraged) to check its very worthwhile edits, because a bot with a personality is, to say the least, wildly irritating. See, for example, Self-Satisfied Door. Cheers, >MinorProphet (talk) 13:57, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Huh? It's a standard boilerplate message, asking the user to verify what it did was correct.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 14:08, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot edit on D.G.H. Latzko

Hello. First of all thank you for the useful job you are doing with your bot. I wasn't able to flag a false positive via the assigned page, so I'll do it here. On the page D.G.H. Latzko it tagged a live page as dead. And also it changed the style of date-formatting used. I don't know whether this is intended. Regards, Crispulop (talk) 21:20, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

You should try logging into the interface. No sign up needed. You should meet requirements to use the FP reporter. Please do provide feedback why you couldn't report via the interface.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 21:22, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Bug in InternetArchiveBot re webcitation.org archives

The InternetArchiveBot apparently did not recognize the webcitation.org archive format when it made this edit at Damalie_Nagitta-Musoke on 5 December 2016. It stuck an archive.org type ending on a perfectly good url. --Bejnar (talk) 18:23, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

@RP88: and it's up again. Please let me know of any bugs you find. I made a major change under the hood.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 19:10, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
If you choose "Swedish Wikipedia" under "Select Wikipedia" you get the error "i18n file sv.json cannot be found." Once you get that error, from then on every page in the UI fails to load returning the same error, leaving no obvious mechanism to restore to a working UI (I fixed it by entering a manual URL of https://tools.wmflabs.org/iabot/index.php?wiki=enwiki ). —RP88 (talk) 19:22, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
It's because there is no Swedish language file yet. So the interface can't load in Swedish. This can be fixed by using "lang=en" in the URL. That will save your language setting in your svwiki account for the interface. :-). It's still alpha software, and not yet complete. Cut me some slack. ;-)—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 19:41, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

different robots.txt for http and https

In some cases domains have differnt robots.txt for http and https example:

  1. http://www.wdr.de/robots.txt
  2. https://www.wdr.de/robots.txt

while the https version allow nothing, the http version is much more liberal. In cases with different robots.txt the Internet Archive Crawler should try both protokolls, if the first one disallow the achiving of the page.

example:

  1. https://wayback.archive.org/save/https://www.wdr.de/tv/kopfball/sendungsbeitraege/2012/1230/lippen.jsp fails
  2. https://wayback.archive.org/save/http://www.wdr.de/tv/kopfball/sendungsbeitraege/2012/1230/lippen.jsp works fine.

Boshomi (talk) 17:36, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

This is something the wayback machine should do, not the bot. But also, as is proof, content can be different on different protocols, usually isn't, but it can be.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 14:54, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
I'll message the devs of IA to see if they are willing to do this.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 14:55, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
Thank you! I had a problem to find the right person at IA for contacting. I only know the contact page.Boshomi (talk) 19:33, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

In the above example, the IA API returns the http even though the https is requested,; the API anyway is flexible in returning whichever is available, so long as it was saved to begin with. -- GreenC 15:53, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

this is correct. The problem is that URLs with unlucky protocol never get archived, if the are used in a wikipedia article. Normally the crawlers work fast, the majority of new linked URLs get archived hours or days after the wikipedia edit. Boshomi (talk) 19:33, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

fyi: In November we did some thousand edits per bot in dewiki to replace dead urls with IA-URLs. i.e: de:special:diff/160202002. We made this with lists of manually checked IA-URLs. The permalink of the lists are linked in the botedits. (As of now a second semi-automatic Edit is necessary for insert the correct template). Boshomi (talk) 19:33, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

WaybackMedic checked every wayback link on English (about 1 million as of September) and it kept a database of all that were inoperable due to robots.txt (about 12000) .. I just checked and only about 600 links are https. I could write a script for those 600 to how many have a working http version that can be saved to Wayback, but I don't think it's going to be very many honestly. It would be a lot of overhead during the save process for low return. Maybe a solution is to only check after the link is established blocked by robots.txt ? -- GreenC 18:55, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

In case of existing IA-URL with status 400+ it could be usefull to try an other Memento with differnt protocol. But this is not the point. We updated some thousend URL of wdr.de form http to https, and replaced dead URLs and redirects by status 200 URLs. As of now we have some thousend https URLs of this domain, and existing IA-Crawlers will fail by robots.txt of this domain. So I think it can be a good idea, that in case of different robot.txt, the crawler check the other protocol, if first tried protocol is blocked by the robots exclustion standard. Boshomi (talk) 15:25, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Yes understood I wonder how many sites have different robots.txt on http/https. convert http to https oh yes that is a big project, nearly as big as IABot itself, to find and convert links to https (and back again should their certificate expire). There is a freely available database of https domains at EFF which is updated every 2 weeks so a bot could use that database to determine when to convert a URL to https. But like IABot it would need to keep a local database of all links and track changes from https->http as https requires money to maintain and site operators may choose to cease offering https for financial reasons. It would also need a way for users to manually exclude/include domains, templates, etc.. -- GreenC 15:47, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
at convert http to https: yes this is a big project. I made 25000 Updates for a Luke081515bot (lists: 1 2). The workflow is:
  1. download URLs from API for some domains (youtube, washingtonpost,...)
  2. check http status
  3. detect invalid redirects
  4. on youtube I found dead link with status 200. All of this dead link had a title-tag only with "YouTube", so I filtered by the title tag. In result I fount 3600 dead URL from 23500 checked http URLs.
  5. I put all good URLs (200 and good redirects) into the List for the bot.
  6. when bot is ready, I know, that all of the http: URLs are dead URLs. For this dead URL I look for mementos in webachives, and give the checked mementos to the bot-lists.
this is a good workflow for big domains, but this workflow costs to much manpower for small domains.Boshomi (talk) 22:59, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Changing the format of a reference

Hi, I've noticed on a couple of references I've added, you change the format layout of them, as below:

My edit (using only one { } symbol here to avoid formatting them here):

{cite web|url=http://www.officialcharts.com/artist/27158/des'ree/%7Ctitle=Official Charts > Des'ree|publisher=The Official UK Charts Company|accessdate=18 November 2016}

Your change to the layout:

{cite web

|url=http://www.officialcharts.com/artist/27158/des'ree/
|title=Official Charts > Des'ree
|publisher=The Official UK Charts Company
|accessdate=18 November 2016

}

All you've done is add spaces either side of the | symbols, and put each part of the formatting on a separate line.

I'm just wondering... what is the point of doing this? What 'improvement' does it make the article? From what I can see, all it does is add additional characters to the size of the page. The display of the reference is not altered in any way by adding these additional spaces and lines. I don't see how it is an 'improvement'.Nqr9 (talk) 00:13, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

It needs to be rewritten for that. It's going to be switched when v1.3 is ready for testing.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 22:28, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

Misclick?

Here, plus a couple others. No big deal, just thought I'd mention it. Writ Keeper  22:15, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

I saw your reversion pop up on echo, and I was like "what edit?". Thanks for the heads up?—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 22:16, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

Cyberbot I - Clear new sandboxes regularly

I, as the creator of the template sandboxes X13-X20, am asking you to implement in Cyberbot I functionality to clean regularly these 8 new sandboxes, like X1-X12 are implemented. I believe this will take minimal effort from you. -- Luis150902 (talk | contribs) 14:29, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

About records

Hello Cyberpower678 ! I can see you have made suggestions at the talk-page of Gramophone record. This article is tecnically good - or I mean everything is about the technicas aspects. I have written a suggestion to maka a new Vinyl records (plural) , which should deal with everything else but technical matter, and instead focus on what the vinyl record ment originally around 1960, and what it become from around 1967 and 20 years on. The culture, and the collecting-culture, that surrounded both vinyl-singles but especially the LP. If you possibly could anwer at the Gramophone record's talk-page, would it be much appriciated. People Sabotaging Article

Hi, there are two users who are teaming up to completely sabotage and go as far as deleting this page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mawlana_As-Sayed_Shaykh_Nurjan_Mirahmadi

Please look into it, as they're just wasting people's time and energy.

staffsmcav (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 13:25, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

This allegation is groundless. Actually, please do look at my recent edits on the Mawlana As-Sayed Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi page, including my advice to staffsmcav on his talk page, and you will see that he has violated Wikipedia neutrality, notability and verifiability guidelines, to name a few, as well as seriously violated broken the three-revert rule by a factor of at least two. Hi.

I don't know if you remember or not, but I sent you an email last year about what I'm about to say, so I'll just say it here. Do you think the MarkAdmins setting from Commons should be here as well so users can identity who is an admin or not? If so, I need your help. 1989 (talk) 18:33, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

I received no such email, and I'm not sure what you're talking about.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 18:34, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
I re-sent it using the Email this user feature. 1989 (talk) 18:54, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Yea I definitely don't remember seeing that email. In any event, my plate is currently full with InternetArchiveBot right now. I'm not sure if I will be able to get around to implementing this. It would first need to be made a gadget here.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 19:16, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Is there a request page for approval of that? 1989 (talk) 19:19, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Try requesting this at WP:BOTREQcyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 19:21, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

I personally use the adminhighlighter, and would support this new gadget.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 20:09, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

About the bot

This may be rather difficult, but is it possible to make this bot not give a deletion template removal warning to the same person who put the template there in the first place?--Yellow Diamond Δ Direct Line to the Diamonds 22:41, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Bot Query

Do you have a bot that would be capable of changing dead links? The United States Air Force has recently migrated its history division website to a different server, breaking most of the links to Air Force books used as references on Wikipedia articles. If you have a bot capable of changing these links, I will post the list of links that need to be changed. Kges1901 (talk) 22:33, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Followed up here. I've been doing things like this recently and have code ready. -- GreenC 15:46, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Factfinder2.census.gov, again

Hey Cyberpower, I thought I'd put it on the blacklist, but Internet archive bot still tried to add an archive link to http://factfinder2.census.gov at Elsberry, Missouri, despite the link not being dead; furthermore, it's still adding a link to a version of the site that doesn't work, as I've mentioned before. I keep on bumping in to this link because I have several random US places on my watchlist to guard against vanedalism; it seems to be on a lot of them. Graham87 12:07, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Blacklists and whitelists are not yet supported by the bot and are disabled on the interface. I'm not quite sure what you tried to do. PS, the blacklist automatically flags the URL as dead, are you referring to the whitelist?—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 14:54, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
Yes, sorry. The whitelist. I tagged it as a false positive. Graham87 01:13, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
There are unfortunately 2 instances of the URL in the DB. I fixed the other instance. It's apparent I need to consolidate the URLs in the DB. The interface automatically resets URLs not seen as false positives with the current version of the algorithm and reports those still coming back as dead.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 01:49, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

No, well I didn't know, they were in spam box. Now whitelisted. -- GreenC 03:31, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

On the recent edit of InternetArchiveBot on the Emanuele Foà entry

Hi Cyberpower678. I think that edit done by InternetArchiveBot is not correct: I tried and I found out that presently the content (or better its first page) can be accessed both by the link tagged as dead and by its digital object identifier. Could you verify? Best, Daniele.tampieri (talk) 11:26, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Cyberbot I keeps clearing Template:X9 (sandbox) for no reason

Please check why Cyberbot I is continuing to clear Template:X9 and Template talk:X9 without there being other activity. Dhtwiki (talk) 02:39, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

@Dhtwiki: because it was written to do so :) Yes, there should be a check, whether bot does change something. --Edgars2007 (talk/contribs) 03:21, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
I took a look at your linked PHP code and probably don't understand it. I see a massive comparison scheduled to take place every 12 hours but don't know what statements such as "Template:X9"=>$templatesandboxtext, mean exactly. There should be a bit of logic that says, "only change something if it's been changed since the last check", not just "overwrite the sandbox every 12 hours". Where does that sit? Dhtwiki (talk) 11:47, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
That usually resides in the MW code itself in that it should silently discard null edits. If that's not happening, there's a bug in the MW software.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 12:21, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Possible IABot bug

RfA squared

It's been 18 months since your RfA, which was a near miss, not least because you withdrew before the 'crats got a consensus. Actually, that's about as close as they come. Do you fancy having another go - your lengthy track record in the technical side of the project would make you fully deserving of the tools, in my view. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:51, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Has it been that long already? Wow. I'm so caught up in my development of IABot and perfecting it for the community. I honestly don't know what I would do with the tools at the moment considering the time I invest in IABot at the moment. :-)—cyberpowerChat:Online 14:58, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

A few IABot queries

I've reviewed the IABot's work at Australian federal budget and Australia 2020 Summit, and also manually checked a couple of links from List of Australian of the Year Award recipients at the IABot Management Interface. I have some queries:

  • Would you call adding deadlink=no a bug, like it did in the first reference changed here. The IABMI did say Live until I changed it, but should it trust that previous editors added an archiveurl because the link was dead?
  • At Australia 2020 Summit the bot logged more tasks than it actually completed, as described in the FaQ. What the FaQ doesn't say is whether you want these failures reported.
  • While manually addressing those extra changes, I found archive URLs for all three sites at Australia 2020 Summit#Related events. The IABMI accepted the katelundy one but not the chiefminister.act one. Any idea why?
  • Checking the URLs in List of Australian of the Year Award recipients I noticed the (Australian public broadcaster) ABC site (as well as its News site and individual news stories) is marked as a Subscription site. Opening those previous links in an incognito browser shows that's not true.

Mark Hurd (talk) 16:04, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Hello, I hope you otherwise had a positive experience with the interface. I have responded to your questions in order.
  • The edit you link to was from an old version, v1.2.5, which had that bug based on a misinterpretation of how the template functions. v1.2.7.1, no longer has that issue, and implicitly consider the URL to be dead on that page. However, due to the potential for collateral damage, IABot still retains its own judgment on the URL, so untagged instances of that specific URL will remain unchanged.
  • It doesn't need to be reported. Sometimes the bot errors on a source and does not change it to prevent possible issues. This usually results from some form of formatting the bot isn't able to handle correctly.
  • If you could give me the archive URL and the original URL, I can investigate. The interface is still in the alpha stage of development, so there are bound to be some bugs as it gets developed. Normally, the archive snapshot must be an archive of the original URL. This is to prevent abuse of the tool and prevent disruption on Wikipedia.
  • The site was marked as a paywall somewhere on Wikipedia. To prevent erroneous alterations to the URLs, the bot marked the entire domain as a paywall. The bot stays away from Paywall URLs, unless explicitly tagged dead on Wikipedia. Sites whose states are marked at the domain level, cannot have the individual URL states changed.
Hope that helps.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 16:38, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
Yes, the interface is quite pleasant to use. My only personal worry is that at some stage I'll absent-mindedly put the next URL to check in the "Reason for change" box and click Submit :-( I don't think I'll actually do it, but I feel like I need to warn myself.
The original URL that won't accept the archived one is: http://www.chiefminister.act.gov.au/media.asp?media=3516&section=24&title=Media%20Release&id=24
And the good archive is: https://web.archive.org/web/20080408232111/http://www.chiefminister.act.gov.au/media.asp?media=3516&section=24&title=Media%20Release&id=24
Note all more recent archives get 302s and the current site reduces to a search box.
Merry Christmas and have a happy New Year. Mark Hurd (talk) 04:54, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
One more thing: If I add an archive URL to a link I call Dead in the interface only (like I have for http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/gargoyle/2007/05/zhai_poised_to_represent_unite.htm from 42 (number) how long before the IABot will attempt to fix the link on the page? Mark Hurd (talk) 05:46, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
Huh, the URLs should match in this case but internally, they don't for some reason, I may need to rebuild the entire DB using sanitized URLs, which will take forever to do. Would you mind reporting a bug using the bug reporter on the tool? As for IABot coming back around, it'll be on the next pass through Wikipedia. I'm going to release features on the interface that will allow users to summon the bot onto pages.—cyberpowerMerry Christmas:Unknown 22:20, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
 T154146 Mark Hurd (talk) 15:45, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi

Why does the archivebot not add notifications of its edits on all articles talk pages but only some? It usually leaves a message at the articles talk pages. But I have noticed that several articles gets no such notification. Regards--BabbaQ (talk) 15:09, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

It only leaves a message if it adds or changes an archive URL snapshot. Formatting fixes and dead tagging don't need a message.—cyberpowerChat:Online 15:17, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
