Requesting your help on a surname spelling

Connormah, it has come to my attention that you are a user who is pretty good, and loves a mystery, at finding out the surnames of people through SS death records. There is a discussion at Talk:Charles Erickson as to whether or not he and Dee Errikson are the same person. You can look at the discussion for the links as to why they are believed to be the same person, and the last name is giving us trouble. Would you be willing to help us figure out the correct spelling for this guy? Thanks! 🎄 Corkythehornetfan 🎄 20:02, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Connormah, I'm the guilty party who fingered you as our Social Security death records "expert". Sorry about that. I would be grateful if you would look into the Erickson/Errikson case, and see what you can find when you have time. Cheers. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 20:05, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
I'll take a look into it. At first glance I'd say that they are probably the same person. Too many things line up for it to be merely a coincidence. Connormah (talk) 22:53, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Bob Perreault, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Saint-Etienne-des-Grès. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Two things...

Hey Connormah, I have a couple of questions for ya. The first one is: can you upload the horizontal logo for Northern Arizona University? It'll fit, and look, better in the infobox. The second question is have you found (or had the chance) to look for Dee Errikson (Charles Erickson) to see if they are the same person? If not, no worries. I was just curious. Thanks. 🎄 Corkythehornetfan 🎄 21:51, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

@Corkythehornetfan: - which horizontal one are you referring to? Connormah (talk) 22:42, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Recent death

I was wondering with all these [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] and [7] (just the ones I came across) "unnecessary or clean up" removals, wouldn't you rather propose {{recentdeath}} for deletion and save you some clicking time. Mlpearc (open channel) 04:27, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

@Mlpearc: - no, I just think it has it's place (when a Robin Williams, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Margaret Thatcher dies...). None of those examples really were warranted IMO per the wording of the template and its documentation - "Do not use it merely to tag the article of a recently deceased person". Connormah (talk) 20:53, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for pointing that out, I thought the template as a general maintenance template, I should of consulted the documentation before posting here. :P Cheers, Mlpearc (open channel) 16:03, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Request for image help

Hey Connormah! You've been great help in the past when dealing with SVG images and I was wondering if you could help again? The University of Kansas recently updated the hex for blue and some logos need updated. They are Athletics, seal, and wordmark. The colors can be found here, but the hex codes are as follows:

  • KU Blue: #0051BA   (All three (3) files)
  • Signature Gray: #85898A   (wordmark only)
  • KU Crimson: #E8000D   (Athletics logo only)
  • Jayhawk Yellow: #FFC82D   (Athletics logo only)

I believe the only color that has changed is the blue, but would you make sure the other colors on the files are the one from the identity website as well? Thanks, ❄ Corkythehornetfan22:00, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Duplicate articles

Hi Connor, I just discovered something that creates a problem with the Nova Scotia MLA articles. An editor created an article on Ron Stewart (politician) in May 2013. The creation was done in good faith, and other editors proceeded to edit the article also. I myself added a lot of content, categories, made sure the entire article was sourced. The creator was able to get a photo of the subject, and the article looks pretty decent. However, I just came across this article, Ronald D. Stewart. It now appears that when the editor created the article in May 2013, there was already an article on the subject. Having worked with him a bit, I know the editor would never have created it had he noticed there was already existing article. We obviously don't need two articles, but I have never faced this before, and not sure what needs to be done. Can you take a look at them and see if there is anything you can do with them? There is only a couple of details in the original that's not in the sourced article. Thanks. Cmr08 (talk) 07:40, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

@Cmr08: - I think the best course of action would be to consolidate all the info on the one with the best title and redirect/move the other (as per WP:MERGETEXT). Strange though, I've never really dealt with something like this. Connormah (talk) 15:24, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
Hi Connor, I consolidated the text as you mentioned. I figured it was easier to move a couple of things to the Ron Stewart (politician) article rather than try to work all the text and sources into Ronald D. Stewart. I talked with the creator of the politician article and we both think the article should be in the name rather than have the disambiguation link. I might be thinking this is harder than it actually is, but I have myself so confused after reading through the merged text policy you mentioned. Would you be able to move this for me so that it's done right? I really don't want to mess this up, but if you don't want to do this, it's ok, I'll just leave it where it's at. Thanks. Cmr08 (talk) 02:14, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Question on SVG file

Hey, Connormah! I was wondering if you would be willing to try and fix the coding on File:Emporia State Hornets logo.svg? It isn't smoothing out correctly, and looks terrible. The most recent uploader, who tried to fix it, said that there is no need to fix it, but I disagree. If you need to completely retrace it, you can find the source here. Just don't use the one with the watermark. If you could help me out on this, that'll be great! I'll correct the colors if this problem can be fixed! If you want to update them when fixing the coding, the colors are #231F20   and #BB8D0A   (the gold is found here). Thanks, 🍀 Corkythehornetfan 🍀 23:22, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

@Corkythehornetfan: - It appears that someone located official outlines already? Connormah (talk) 13:54, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
He said there was an autotrace in the previous uploaded version and directly uploaded the newest (current) version from the source. It still needs some improvement, though in my opinion. I'll place it here as an example in the small size. I know it can be completely smooth and have good quality because ESU Athletics uses a vector image on one of their webpages (a person just cannot access it, though). 🍀 Corkythehornetfan 🍀 18:10, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Gil Steer, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page North Vancouver, British Columbia. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Mike Robinson (Alberta politician)

Hi Connor, I seen your edit to the Mike Robinson (Alberta politician) article, about not being the person who died. You also removed the Order of Canada as being wrong person, but I checked the citation, and it wasn't the wrong person. The citation for Order of Canada matches up with the details in the article. It was the Mike Robinson who died that didn't have the Order of Canada, according to the news article on his death. Please check the citation and see if you think it's still not the same person that received the Order of Canada. If I'm wrong, I will apologize for reverting. Cmr08 (talk) 05:30, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

@Cmr08: - It looks like some of the news outlets were mixing the two up as well... very confusing. CBC said that he received the Order of Canada in 2004, and it seems that most were incorrect about his age and birthplace as well! Connormah (talk) 17:45, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Connormah. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Arne Melchior

Regarding this. Well, it's pretty easy, but also entirely unnecessary and your (an admin, no less) somewhat taunting wording in the edit summary doesn't exactly help either. If your comment was aimed at use of ref in lead I note that the article hasn't been split into sections (i.e., no separate lead) and in any case leads are not exempt of refs (WP:CITELEAD), especially when dealing with the recent death of a person. If your comment was aimed at the use of ref within brackets that was the correct way of doing it--> WP:REFPUNCT. Happy editing, 80.62.116.13 (talk) 06:15, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Christina Grimmie

Your edit is of course correct, but there have been continuing problems with editors changing the DoD (originally reported as 11 June, then clarified by OPD) so I've inserted a comment in the ref's place. Cheers! —ATS 🖖 Talk 06:22, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

United States Constitution

Hi Connormah, I'm wondering what you would think about the possibility of removing semi-protection from United States Constitution. You protected indefinitely it six years ago and I see no reason to believe that the article continues to be at particular risk of heavy and persistent vandalism by unregistered users. Thanks, 207.161.217.209 (talk) 21:48, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

(by talk page stalker) I would oppose removing any such protection as I oppose IPs editing, generally. Topics commonly covered in primary schools are magnets for vandalism. The existing protection prevents that vandalism. I don't think the online environment has changed much in the past six years so if there was reason for protection then there's still that same reason now. I'll also note that IPs can make edit requests on the talk page. The editors there have been answering requests same-day so an IP is not much inconvenienced by this page protection. Chris Troutman (talk) 22:27, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

I would oppose removing any such protection as I oppose IPs editing, generally.

Well, given that your view is wholly out of line with policy, I trust that it will be appropriately given little to no weight and that any decision relating to unprotection will be made in accordance with the protection policy. If you disagree with the policy, that is a conversation more appropriately had at WT:PROTECT, not as part of this discussion. 207.161.217.209 (talk) 23:06, 24 September 2016 (UTC)
After some thought I have to agree with Chris here. I think that given its protection history and the fact that it's a high enough visibility page that removing any sort protection would be detrimental. I of course would welcome other opinions though. Hi Connormah: With this edit in 2013, you unintentionally combined two people. See Talk:Alexander Durley for the details, but basically, the article is about a college coach (after whom a stadium is named, and who was inducted into a regional athletic conference hall of fame) and who was also a college professor, but whose birth and death dates I can't find anywhere, but you added birth and death (and middle name) info for a high-school coach, usually known as Alex, who won two state championships and has quite a bit of coverage because of a fantastic integration story (and after whom a high-school stadium was named). To add spice, and difficulty in searching for news sources, both coaches were black and worked at then-segregated black institutions. The article was AfD'd as part of a group, the result being no consensus, shortly after creation; this specific article wasn't even mentioned there. I'm scratching my head over the notability issue, and am writing this to you partly because you list yourself as a member of the college football wikiproject. I posted a query at Drmies' talk page but got crickets. What I'm now thinking of doing is writing up the high-school coach in my user space, AfDing the existing article after removing the incorrect biographical section and adding what else I was able to find and archive URLs for the broken refs in the career section if I can find them, then asking the wikiproject's advice on the high-school guy's draft at the same time as I list the college guy's AfD there. But since you're a member of the project, you may be able to opine based on my findings as listed on the talk page, or you may be able to find sources I couldn't. Yngvadottir (talk) 01:50, 2 November 2016 (UTC) — I went ahead and rewrote Alexander Durley and created User:Yngvadottir/Alexander Durley (high-school coach). What do you think? Yngvadottir (talk) 07:49, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

@Yngvadottir: - thanks for catching this, and great work. Perhaps the college coach one can just be reverted back to a stub then? I know that precedent has been that AFDs for those usually go the way of keeping the articles, but maybe that's changed. Connormah (talk) 18:01, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
There's now been discussion at WikiProject College Football and someone has found more references on the college coach. Before posting there, I'd looked at the incoming links—I was checking for any that were meant for the high-school coach—and discovered that the wikiproject has a policy that college head coaches are notable, and he was inducted into a hall of fame and also had a previous career at another college, so he really seems safe and we've wound up with a much better article; the sad things regarding him are that you had been the only one to previously try to improve it, and that it really requires a newspapers.com subscription to see the information; everything else has vanished unless you know the info already (i.e., where he started out as head coach). What concerns me now is the high-school coach. I don't want to risk my autopatrolled right by moving my draft to mainspace and letting the community decide whether to AfD and delete it. Nor do I want to clutter the encyclopedia with a memorial to a non-notable coach. In my view he's an edge case: he had two big achievements, one of which has hardly survived in the online archives that I can see, the other of which is still reported in many places but I would not have been reminded of it if I hadn't remembered reading a Texas Monthly article, discovered that it wasn't cited at all in the article on the school (still isn't; whenever I have time to update that article someone starts gabbing at me off-wiki), and it took some hunting to track that down. Despite the importance of collegehigh-school football in Texas, we clearly just don't have enough editors here interested in working on it. There's no obvious wikiproject to ask for help or a judgement on the high-school coach Durley. So unless someone comes along, he's still a draft. It doesn't weigh heavily with me, but I'm sure it would with the college football wikiproject, that if he were to be mainspaced, the college coach's article really should be disambiguated also. They worked at places an hour, an hour and a half separated, and the same editor found what may well be a picture of one of them as a player under the other, but apart from that picture they each seem to be the only "Coach Alexander Durley" the particular news source knows of. So it's a pickle, but it looks to me as if Alexander Durley is all fixed up for now and Alexander Durley (high-school coach) will have to stay red. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:37, 6 November 2016 (UTC) - It didn't. I finally had time to revise West Brook Senior High School and came upon a hall of fame the high-school coach had been elected to, so ... he's in mainspace now, for good or ill. Yngvadottir (talk) 20:50, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Connormah.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Laird

I was going off the visual editor's break that displaces sections as ridiculous, not the chronological offices. However, regarding the chronological nature of how we order offices, the only precedent we have that breaks this rule is if the officeholder held a head of state or government position, which will always takes precedence at the top of the box (hence Taft). AFAIK, there is no other precedent or rule and so the most recent office comes to the top. I find that editors often have competing claims to which office is to be someone's main notability and so pure chronological is how I've always done it and how I've always seen it done. Regarding Laird specifically, while he was DefSec for longer and during a crucial period, more obits I've seen have had anecdotes regarding his brief time heading the DPC and resigning in the midst of Watergate. So which is the more crucial office? I don't know. Is it time spent or events occurred? All I know is what came last and put that first. </wordsoup> Therequiembellishere (talk)

@Therequiembellishere: - most obits seem to mention his as an ex-SecDef in their headlines, so I was under the assumption that would be it. It is the more "important" office (and speaking in general terms of Cabinet-level positions) out of all of the ones he held, though. Connormah (talk) 02:30, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
