HOW BOUT YOU DONT TOUCH MY FUCKING PAGE ASSHOLE!!! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Weatherman5000 (talkcontribs) 07:56, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm not going to sugercoat this into some long, dragged out RFC or RFAr, so I'm going to say this pretty straight foward. I am going to suggest to you indef blocking this user. It's obvious from his comment above here, his warnings on his talk page for being blocked for vandalism and persistant warnings that the communities patience has worn thin with him. semper fiMoe 20:47, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, you said "within the hour he would be blocked" and not a minute later.. :) I just found the comments on your talk disgraceful and no one should have to put up with that, especially you. semper fiMoe 21:08, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your blatant erasure of Weatherman5000's barnstars should be considered vandalism. I demand that you resign your position as a Wiki user. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.178.101.84 (talkcontribs) .

Proteosome sic?

[edit]

Dear ClockworkSoul, I think the title of the last mail I have received from you is a missprint. Proteosome is only sounds "proteosome" but it is proteasome as it is the title of the article! I think it is not an alternative name of the same component. best regards from Kohlasz 21:20, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How is an article nominated?

[edit]

Hi I saw proteasome and realized that if an article as small as this can get nominated, then my recent article on Thy1 (CD90) is much more detailed than this and has lot more references. Just that I couldnt find a crystal structure for it. Do you think it can be nominated (though its not written by collaboration, its written almost 100% by me so far, the few IP address you see are my unlogged entries)? --Dr.saptarshi 02:46, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't given up

Just letting you know that I'm not abandoning MCB collaboration - rather, my time is limited due to exam preperations. You know... ;) ShaiM 11:17, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.
Signed...
Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

You might want to know when the next meetup was being organized in New York City. Plan for Saturday, 9 December 2006. While you're at it... Come help us decide on a restaurant. See: Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC. Spread the word. Thanks. —ExplorerCDT 23:07, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BAX

[edit]

Thanks for the welcome. How do I get a page (Bcl-2–associated death protein) renamed? BAX is an acronym for "Bcl-2-associated X protein", not "Bcl-2-associated death protein; see Oltvai et al, 1993, who state, "For this reason, hereafter we refer to p21 as Bax (i.e., Bcl-2-associated X protein)". Article Title Style Question - Acronyms

[edit]

I looked in the style guidelines for article titles and didn't find the answer to this question, perhaps it has been discussed in this or other groups...What is proper when a title word is an acronym? An example: The BCL in BCL-2 is an acronym for "B-Cell Lymphoma", so should the article title be "BCL-2", or "Bcl-2"?

A related question (for the biology community) is, what standard is used for distinguishing between gene names and protein names? Even in the research literature, there are several "standards" (with the quotations emphasizing that they aren't always followed diligently). You can imagine the options: 1) gene name in all caps, protein name in lowercase; 2) gene name in italics, protein name in roman; 3) etc. Have we all agreed on a standard, and if so, what is it? This might be a good topic for a FAQ for the Molecular Biology et al project(s).

~Doc~ EquationDoc 04:34, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, my first question wasn't clear. An example: the BAX article is titled "Bcl-2-associated X protein", but should it instead have been "BCL-2-associated X protein"? This is probably silly, but it makes a difference when linking to it, since if you want to write it as "BCL-2-associated X protein", but the article is titled "Bcl-2-associated X protein" then the link would be [[Bcl-2-associated X protein|BCL-2-associated X protein]]. ~Doc~ EquationDoc 05:59, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Just finished reading our style manual. Alle ist Klar. I'll fix it for the Bcl-2 stuff as I go. One minor point WRT the naming convention is the whole p system, that is, p53, p21, p27, etc. By the standard, p53 would never be written, it would always be TP53 and TP53 for humans, Tp53 and Tp53 for orthologues, which definitely goes against the research literature (which is admitedly sloppy). Of course, the whole p system is ridiculous anyway, since a protein's weight isn't unique. (Who started that system anyway?) Anyway, I'll get over it. :) ~Doc~ EquationDoc 05:59, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
gC1qR/p33 huh? Hmm. I hate the "BP" (binding protein) tendency. I think about p53, it was first identified as binding to E6 in SV40, so it would have been named E6BP (ie. a human protein named by the simian virus protein it binds to--absurd). So, I've been working on apoptosis for about a year now, and only five minutes ago found out the HUGO name for PUMA is BBC3 (complement component 1, q subcomponent binding protein). Go figure. And now I feel compelled to rename the PUMA article. *L* ~Doc~ EquationDoc 06:16, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question about OR and using a Master's thesis

[edit]

I have a question about using a Master's thesis (http://www.archive.org/download/Rickert_EVE_MES_Thesis_2005/Rickert_Eve_MES_Thesis_2005.pdf) as a reference for a Wiki page. This is my thesis, but it has been accepted and I have been awarded my degree, so it would count as an acceptable reference, and not OR, correct? In other media, generally dissertations and Master's theses are considered acceptable citations since they have been through the "peer review" of a committee. Also, there are some portions that I think could be copied wholesale for Wiki articles or sections - such as "Dynamics of the Interntional Coffee market," "Coffee and the Environment," "The International Coffee Agreement" and "'Sustainable' Coffees." Since I own the copyright, this would be ok, is that correct? Is there a special procedure or notation I should use if I want to do this? Thanks!Margareta 22:07, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are several issues that the WikiProject needs to address.

  1. Do we need a coordinator (or more than one) to coordinate our efforts and act as an arbiter? Please place your thoughts here.
  2. Could someone work on archiving the talk page Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Awards?
  3. Do we need to develop better guidelines for the Wikipedia:WikiProject awards?
  4. Finally, could you please weigh in on the following discussions so we can move them to conclusion:

Prions

[edit]

I am not a biologist so I am not sure that I have not made any mistakes. However, I was somewhat stunned at how the introduction seemed to downplay the genetic component to some of these diseases (I notice that this deficiency was corrected lower in the article, but the article should be consistent). The article seemed to only concentrate on BSE and related prion diseases and not mention the others. This is especially true when it seemed that the original article included the other prion diseases. I am not sure why. Maybe I am missing something?--ReasonIsBest 17:21, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Log/2006_November_28#Church_Street.2C_Burlington

Could you remind me how to look up the content for an article that has been deleted? I was a bit surprised to see that this one was deleted, and practically immediately. Like I think the same day someone recommend it. The user who asked that it be deleted is admitedly a new user according to their user page. The only other person who voted had a user page that I found a bit offensive. I thought if articles were not clearly a speedy delete that they were granted a 5 day discussion period. Based on some articles that I've seen that apparently exist with no complaint, Church Street, Burlington, VT may very well deserve mention on Wikipedia. Thanks for your help in steering me in the "right" direction. Keesiewonder 01:01, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MCB stub for deletion

[edit]

Hi Clockwork - if you get a chance you should check out the fact the Molecular and Cellular Biology-stub is up for deletion --> a note has been left on the WP talk:MCB page. I left a bit of a grumpy message, but I did notice the guy has been an Admin for all of 1 day.

Also, this development mirrors the massive issues I've had with the Manual of Style bogans who just like tagging articles with annoying boxes rather than fixing them or offering constructive criticism. I've had a go rewriting a draft revision for the Manual of Style (writing about fiction) to try and inject some sense, but the whole thing still winds me up. I guess I'm a "builder" or a "revisionist" rather than a "deletionist" at heart. Enough rambling. See you, Dr Aaron 08:59, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speed Square / Steel Square

[edit]

I have been editing these 2 articles since their inception. Initially It was my intent to use "speed Square" as a general term. It has been used synonomously with the triangular square in the carpentry trade and it was intended to explain the rudimentary use and or comparison to the Steel Square. I did not realize that it was a trade name. I am a beginner at using the Wiki code, excuse the ignorance. Also to avoid redundancy, I wanted to define words like Ridge Board, there apparently is no glossary of Carpentry terms. How would you suggest starting one? You have a section on measuring instruments that is a quick and helpful guide that links users to this. Could it be linked to your glossary? page. Jack 02:15, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed you marked the cell metabolism article as requiring immediate attention on the cell biology wikiproject. I just merged the content into Metabolism, which still needs some work... however, where I really need help is on fixing the listings of cell metabolism on the wikiproject page, since it doesn't make sense to leave the article listing and evaluation on the talk page of a somewhat defunct article. Could you help? Metabolism still needs work and I'd like to direct wikiproject members to that article instead. Robotsintrouble 11:45, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm proposing a return to your original redirect to Pale Ale. SilkTork 21:36, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and Questions

[edit]

Hi there too, thanks for your message. I guess that I figured I had done all that I could with the article, (peer-review and such) and thought that it might be ready for the next step. It really it is such a huge subject, hopefully my move was not a mistake....

Anyways that brings me to my question. Several of the grad students, post docs and a few professors (up to 20 indiv.) at my work and school have expressed interest in developing an "Immunology group" that would contribute to and attempt to improve all Immunology and some medicine related articles. I think that we would like to be "linked" in some way, but I get the impression that shared accounts are really a no-no here? I thought since you are an admin. you might know of some way that we could be recognized as a group, or if you have any other ideas??--DO11.10 04:55, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really sorry...

[edit]

The messages on Reach Out and your user page caught my attention, and I just want to let you know that there is at least one person out in the Wiki world who is hoping and wishing that all turns out okay for you. From the message on your user page, it sounds like a very special person broke your trust; I'm so sorry, and though I've never had it happen to me, I can imagine the immense grief you're suffering. If at all possible, I urge you not to let her out of your life. Nothing is more special than love; don't let her go because of one mistake she made, if you can help it.

If you want someone to talk to, I'll be here. Wishing you well, P.B. Pilhet / Talk 21:18, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Clockwork, I'm really sorry for your loss which, regrettably, I understand from both sides now. Hopefully, the tempests will quiet with time, and you'll be able to see everything in a larger and softer light. Please let me encourage you to forgive her and try to understand her, if only for your own sake. I sometimes listen to Bach for hours to help remind me that there's beauty in the world, in our friends, and even in those who have hurt us; even they are as full of goodness as a pomegranate is full of seeds. Willow 13:16, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clockwork, I am sorry to hear that you are feeling so much pain right now. I just wanted to let you know that you have helped me so much here, and probably don't even know it, just by noticing my work and offering your assistance, you have made me feel like a part of a supportive community. The best advice I ever got in dark times was to go out into the world and discover something or someplace you never knew existed. Discovering something outside yourself almost always leads to discovering something good about yourself. One of my greatest "outings" was to take one of those city walking tours, in a totally foreign part of the city. If your city offers them I suggest it, it really did work. (If not museums often work well too.) Wishing you all the best--DO11.10 18:10, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Clockwork,

I was drifting away on happy dreams, when I suddenly woke up thinking that you needed a letter to remind you that people care about you. :) Warning: gushy and poorly thought-out stuff ahead. ;)

Maybe it's not the right time to say this, but I believe that forgiving people, and being kind and generous, can redeem us from bitterness and sorrow. I don't know your and her story, but I sense that you still care for her; why not be gentle with her and also with yourself? I'm sure that life will be generous to you in return. At 31, you have oceans of time before you; why not see the oceans of goodness within her, within the people around you — and within you? You're here, volunteering your time, learning and teaching and filling the world with light, surrounded by friends who respect you, who care for you and share your sorrows. If you could feel but the tenth part of the good will that your friends are sending you, you would realize that we are living in an echo of Eden.

A well-meaning friend, Willow 01:47, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Advice more practical: Once broken, things rarely mend, which we must accept serenely. But a friendly goodbye dinner, sharing wine and old stories, is sometimes nice, if done in the right spirit, acting as a period that lends sense and understanding to its sentence. Good luck!

Just poking around, I notice you seem to have been upset by something recently (sorry I'm a bit late to the party). Hotlinking Problem

[edit]

Hi, I'm a 21 year old student, blogger and subscriber to newscientist magazine. I noticed in my web usage recently that there was particular strain on one file on my server, a pdf file relating to coffee - lifted by me from the newscientist web archive. You have hotlinked the pdf, and used it without NS or my permission as a reference for the caffeine article (Refernce 2 - Article by R. Lovett). The offending edit can be found here. Considering I am breaking copyright by actually publishing the article, but did so to share with a small group of friends on the coffeesnobs.com.au site, I would ask that you either rehost the document on a public server or remove the reference, in order that I do not expose myself any further to litigation.

I also ask that in the future you gain hosts' permission to hotlink, as quite apart from being impolite, the act is actually stealing - using a resource without permission, for free that someone else has paid for.

Thankyou for your time, and in advance for your actions.

dialagranny 05:00, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry - as evidenced by Dmanning's and your own reactions, my point must not have been made - my fault entirely. What I am asking is that you remove the hotlink to my file, whether that be through removing the 90% claim in the article, thereby rendering the reference unnecessary or alternatively by hosting the article elsewhere. I will be removing the source soon, but do not want to inconvenience other wikipedia users when the link to the pdf file becomes corrupt. This is the reason why I have contacted you - I am aware I can do the edit myself but wish to offer you an alternative to simply removing the reference. dialagranny 05:39, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind. I got it to work. Nol888(Talk) 20:08, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are three proposals which need some comments. Please weigh in:

Two of the three are sensitive, and thuglas is taking the whole process personally. Finally, there has never been a standard for how much support is needed for the creation of a barnstar. The LGBT star went up with seven votes, and thuglas is threatening to post his star when he gets ten supportive votes. Thoughts? --evrik (talk) Barnstar]]

  • Once again, someone disagrees with my interpretation of our very loose guidelines. Now I don't mind when two users like WJBscribe and Kathryn_NicDh%C3%A0na, but they've taken the disagreement and posted negative comments over at that RFC.
So ... could you please weigh in one last time ... new barnstar or a wikiproject award Wikipedia:Barnstar_and_award_proposals/New_Proposals#The_Copyeditor.27s_Award. Thanks. --evrik (talk) 23:01, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
