FA Thanks

Thanks for your infinite patience, curiosity, and enthusiasm. Your effort, which went far beyond the call of duty, during the GA review was instrumental in the progress of this article.

Wow, thanks. I'm really pleased that it got there. Great work.  Chzz  ►  03:42, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi!

I like your customized welcome. May I ask, did you create that as some sort of JS or add-on to twinkle, or do you subst or copy/paste manually? I am thinking about something similar. Thanks.    7   talk Δ |   04:55, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. It's manual; the template is in user:chzz/w. So, I go to Special:Logs, choose the 'creation log', and look for users with a redlinked talk but with contribs. If the name is inappropriate, I use WP:UAA or ask 'em about it on their talk. I try to check their contribs if possible, and then open their (non-existent) talk for editing in another tab. Then, when I have lots of such tabs open, I key through them, putting and an edit summary, and save.
The template uses a few 'tricks' to put a page in their area, the sig/talk page of the user posting it, etc. It should work for anyone, so feel free to use it yourself. You can of course also copy it and make your own version.
Hope this helps, ask any questions, cheers,  Chzz  ►  13:48, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks - I appreciate it.    7   talk Δ |   22:45, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Hiya

Hey there chzz. I hope you're doing well. I took some time off from -help, today was the first time I joined in awhile. I just wanted to leave you a note and say hi :-) Killiondude (talk) 05:19, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Ohai, nice to see you back. I was a bit concerned; we had a brief chat about a user helpme, and I - with my typical lack of diplomacy - said to tell them to 'fuck off' or something. It was intended in a jokey way, against the rather silly request by the user, but - as you said something about 'I never say stuff like that', left my channel soon after and I didn't hear from you for a bit, I was worried that it might've been misinterpreted as being against yourself - which it absolutely was not.
Meh, I like to have fun and joke around; sometimes it can be misconstrued. Anyways, I'm happy to see your message. Keep up all the good stuff,  Chzz  ►  13:54, 20 May 2009 (UTC) Etc :-)
To be honest that is sorta why I left... but I got over it. Nice to see it was only a joke. I wasn't in that good of a mood that day, so I took it offensively. By the way, you might like this gadget (just came out a few days ago): User:Mikaey/WikiBiff. Killiondude (talk) 16:15, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
So easy to be misunderstood on IRC. I had a bad day yesterday, so I know what you mean. Sometimes it can be very frustrating and make you wonder what the point of the whole thing is. I think this is pretty normal; I think we all feel that way from time to time.
Wikibiff looks interesting. I'll give it a try.  Chzz  ►  16:55, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Were you ready for this to be launched? Don't know if you've noticed, but El-Pabloski (talk · contribs) moved it yesterday, for some reason. pablohablo. 05:44, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Is nothing to do with me. I never suggested a merger, I never made an article with that name or edited it (even though it was make in my user space).
Re. Red cunt hair - I objected to the second AfD - the first was 'no consensus', and then just a few weeks later, a second came to the same conclusion (in my opinion), but it was closed as 'delete' - I objected via DRV, and despite considerable debate, the result there was 'no consensus', which in this case was interpreted as it not being appropriate to overturn the admins decision. Hence, without any consensus from the community, the article was deleted.
I'll try not to rant, but that's the way it is. Cheers for telling me that had happened.  Chzz  ►  14:04, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Message from Jeremyh6

I would like to start a new topic on: 'Suabru liberty H6 Bi-turbo" How do I go about doing this? Many thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeremyh6 (talkcontribs) 15:04, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

First, before you make your first article, I suggest working on some other things - as explained in the welcome message.
Also in the welcome, it explains how to use user pages. You could make an article in your user space, and work on it there - that way, you could ask people to check it for you before copying it over to the live area.
Make sure that the information isn't already on Wikipedia; the article Subaru Legacy (which is the non-Australian name of the Liberty) already contains information about the H6; see the sub-articles Subaru Legacy (third generation) and Subaru Legacy (fourth generation) - you might want to add information to those, to improve them.
Cheers,  Chzz  ►  16:08, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Insert a Picture

Hi Chzz,

As Pattabhi Jois died recently, I'd like to update his description page . . . how do I insert a picture of him from my file with some basic information about him. I have several sources who have had first hand experiences with him.

Thanks for the support.

Yoganovice. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yoganovice (talkcontribs) 16:44, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Ref. K. Pattabhi Jois
It would be great if you could work on improving that page.
If you have a picture of your own (ie you hold the copyright) then yes, please add it, as follows;
 • Add it to the article with code such as where the filename is the one you uploaded it to. For example, results in the image shown here. There are lots more options; for more info, see WP:IMAGES.
Please do improve the article, but note that you must use verifiable, reliable sources - not 'first-hand experience'. All the facts should be referenced, to sources such as books, newspapers etc. I see from a quick google news search (Ctrl-click)"> (Ctrl-click)"> (Ctrl-click)">here that there are suitable sources for info that can be added. For help with how to make good references, see user:chzz/help/refs.
I'll be happy to help you with this, or to do some of the work myself; please let me know. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  17:01, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Er... is this user really welcome? -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 17:30, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Heh; must admit, I missed (Ctrl-click)"> (Ctrl-click)"> (Ctrl-click)">that. I'll chuck a warning on there now, and watch it. Hopefully can AGF and put it down to a 'test edit'. If not, meh, will be blocked soon enough. I have found though that sometimes such people are just bored and don't know what else to do, so welcome (and hopefully getting 'em to chat) can help. Sometimes. OK, not often, but when it works, it makes the rest worthwhile, I think.  Chzz  ►  17:35, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
I think it was just a sock of the kid I'd blocked a few minutes earlier. :) -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 17:43, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Chzz, I think that you should be nominated for admin. tools. I really think that you have done an outstanding job as a user and REALLY think that you would have the support of the whole community, seeing that you help everyone out. You are all over all the helpme requests and on this IRC. I would be honored to nominated if you would just allow me. I go to college with Wireless Keyboard (I persuaded him to create an account) and we have already talked and agreed you should become an administrator. Please let me know! Thanks. Hi! I was just wondering if I am allowed to post opinionated writings on my user page. For example, I just wrote a research paper on the cause of ww2, and it has my own take on what caused it.

Apologia2000 (talk) 03:38, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Pretty much, yes. There are no hard and fast rules - the same as everything else on Wikipedia, we find that if we write lots of policy on such things, it can just be misinterpreted. So, common sense is required. As long as it doesn't cause offense, and you consider the feelings of others, then giving a viewpoint should be fine.
To quote the guideline; "There is broad agreement that you may not include in your user space material that is likely to bring the project into disrepute, or which is likely to give widespread offense (e.g. pro-pedophilia advocacy) – whether serious or trolling, it's not what user pages are for. "Wikipedia is not a soapbox" is usually interpreted as applying to user space as well as the encyclopedia itself. You do have more latitude in user space than elsewhere, but don't be inconsiderate. Extremely offensive material may be removed on sight by any editor."

Jawleyford

Hi Chzz,

Thanks for your message. I confess I am puzzled by some of the jargon and it seems rather complicated to contribute material to Wikipedia. I am particularly interested in African plants and have photos of many that are mentioned in Wikipedia. However I don't see how to upload them on to the relevant species page. Would be grateful for any help you can give me.

Thanks

Jawleyford (talk) 04:52, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Gazania
Hi there! Sorry, yes, it can seem quite daunting at first. We try to make things as simple as possible, but with almost 3 million articles and 10 million users, some complexity is unavoidable. If, however, you can cut through the jargon, it's not so bad.
If you've got a picture, and it's your own (no copyright troubles), then here is how;
 • Upload the pic at commons:upload. The instructions are pretty straight-forward; under 'licence' you could choose 'Public Domain', to keep it easy. Note the exact filename that you upload it to.
 • Put code like this on the page:
.
That will display the image shown here. There are lots of options; see WP:IMAGES, and you can always test it out on a 'practice page' in your user area (as mentioned in the welcome, ie User:Jawleyford/test).
If you have problems, please ask me again, or (Ctrl-click)"> (Ctrl-click)"> (Ctrl-click)">talk to us live. Good luck,  Chzz  ►  06:11, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm not an admin but I removed the A7 request from that article. There is a claim to notability in there, so it's not a speedy. How far it would get at AfD, I wouldn't like to speculate but I thought it was worth dropping you a line since you contested the speedy. Let me know if I can be of assistance.

Btw, I've seen you around and, for what it's worth, if you were to go for RfA, I'd support. All the best, HJMitchell You rang? 09:33, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for comments re. this article. I added that single ref, as it was the only one I could find in English; I have asked the creator Byzantine88 (talk · contribs) to please cite more sources; I see that they have added wikilinks but no refs so far. I've added a 'refimprove' and will give 'em a bit longer - as a new user, I don't want to overwhelm them (which is why I gave them a very brief referencing note, not detail on cite tags etc). If nothing happens, I'll try and source more myself or seek language help.
Also, thanks for your support comment; I appreciate it. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  13:23, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
You're quite welcome. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help with this and drop me a line if you do decide to run for adminship! HJMitchell You rang? 21:38, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Inserting images in text

First thanks for your help with uploading images. I tried writing some text for Aframomum zambesiacum as I could find no entry for this species but then couldn't see how to add 2 images to the text. I was told I wasn't authorized to do this! However, using the link you gave me, I managed to upload 3 photos, two of this species, and was asked to categorise them. I tried to use "Plants" but this didn't seem to work. How can I link them to the text? As you suggested I have added my name to the group dealing with plants. Thanks again for your help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jawleyford (talkcontribs) 14:45, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi there.
I can see from your contributions on commons that you have indeed uploaded the pictures, and they're fine - I've added them here, and they're show above. Very nice.
Regarding the category;
I took a look at the first file, commons::File:Aframomum angustifolium fruit.jpg. I think that you put 'Category plants' - and the software automatically puts in the prefix 'category', so it came out duplicated, as;

I changed this to;

...with this edit - this worked, but came up with the following messages;

This category requires frequent maintenance to avoid becoming too large. It should list very few (if any) images or pages directly, and should mainly contain sub-categories. Media files and pages in this category should be moved to subcategories where appropriate.

[1]

Category:Categories requiring diffusion|Aframomum angustifolium fruit.jpg

This category is for various common plant aspects.

Now, I'm not very hot on the Biology, but I figured that, as a member of the plant Kingdom, the former category would be appropriate, so I replaced;

...with...

...with this edit. This seems to have worked, and satisfied the requirements, so I think all is well. Maybe the other category is appropriate too, I don't know. Perhaps you could make similar changes to the other files yourself? Have a go, anyway, and if you get stuck please ask me again.

So - those files are now available to add to any articles that you wish, or to try out in your user area. As an example, I have added them to User:Jawleyford/test - and you have a link to that test page in the welcome message on your talk page. If you edit the test page, you'll see how I did it; it's very simple. Cheers,

Lhoki

Hey chzz, is there any chance I can have rights to upload images, I am creating a Wikipedia for my course at college (I have to do it to get the grades I want) and in my brief I have been asked to upload images of our teams (produces solely by us) and screen shots of our final product (again solely by us) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lhoki Shipley College (talkcontribs) 15:19, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. You should upload free image to commons, not to Wikipedia. Go to commons:upload and follow the instructions there. You do not need any permissions or anything. Once they are uploaded to commons, you can use them immediately on Wikipedia.
To try it out, create the page User:Lhoki Shipley College/test and just put , putting the name of the file that you uploaded.
If you need any further help, please ask again. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  15:26, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Static & dynamic IP addresses, et al.

Chzz, more questions for you! Please reply here, & I'll check back - ta.
Q1. Could you enlighten me as to how you distinguish between the two?
For instance, this AIV gives us this WHOIS and this RDNS - fine - except I've never seen the latter 2 animals before, & know not how to interpret them.
How then do you determine whether the IP address is a static one or a dynamic one?
Q2. How could I have achieved the above "this AIV" link, without the link symbol appearing after it?
Q3. How could I have achieved the newlines here, without using < b r >s?
Arigatou gozaimasu, Trafford09 (talk) 07:11, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

I'll give the very brief version of what could be a very long explanation; you cannot tell if an IP address is dynamic or static using any tools. You might, perhaps, be able to see that it is in a range that is known to be allocated dynamically, but even then it is an assumption. Also, for all practical intents and purposes, it makes no difference. Lots of people with dynamic IP's have the same address for months, years at a time. And a user with a static IP can swap service provider, or change their firewall server, whatever.
WHOIS just tells you whatever details are registered for the IP address, which is often, like here, an ISP somewhere up the line; it doesn't tell you anything more specific about the user, just about their service provider (or their service providers provider) - it does give you a starting point of contact in the event of serious breaches though.
As for Reverse DNS, well...every time you put in 'wikipedia.com' that name is resolved to a numeric IP address. Reverse is just that - you give a numeric IP and it tells you the domain associated with it.
With regards to the breaks - you could've just left a blank line; however, to force more than one blank line, you would have to use </bs>.
 Chzz  ►  07:42, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the info.. But notice that this is on same line as previous sentence, as I didn't use < b r >?
And Q2? Actually, I've noticed that all my 3 links have that squiggle symbol after them. It looks a little odd. Is there a way of avoiding the symbols? Trafford09 (talk) 11:09, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi Chzz, I have a little doubt on the William Windsor's image. The caption reads the photo was taken in 1999 May. But in article it says he joined the army in 2001. Can this be the photo of the predecessor of Billy. Nice article.--Chanaka L (talk) 07:25, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

You are quite right, so I removed it :-( What a shame - wrong goat. Help request

I've written this new article, William Windsor (goat); I am doing all that I can to develop it, but I need assistance. I have sought references from books, etc, so the background info needs expansion. There are comments on the talk page, describing how it could be developed; I have spent time sourcing referencing information, but some work is required to get it into shape, and to incorporate it into the article. The prose needs work too... and there are plenty of references out there to add to the article.

I would like to get it up to the B-level, at least; any assistance with improving the article, or feedback on how this could be achieved, would be greatly appreciated.  Chzz  ►  23:46, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi

Hi, thanks for the note. Though I just created an account, I'm a long time Wikipedia user. I'm only making a few grammatical and technical edits for now and only about things that I know well (i.e. Beer - 10 years as a professional brewer, LISP - professional LISP programming experience going back 20 years, and Ambigrams - long time designer). I will be putting up an article or two once I've got my bearings (and can upload). For some reason I always felt it might be weird to write about the brewery while it was still a going concern (it closed in 2006) - but now there's no vested interest, it's just for posterity.

Alright, time for bed. Thanks again.

Hi, great to have you on board.
Not so silly to think about conflict of interest - it's kinda big deal here...but sounds like you'll be able to contribute loads. I also love beer, and am a certified geek; hope I can help you out. Have a play around, and any questions at all, please ask.  Chzz  ►  06:00, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the idea!

Hey Chzz, its Enzo (RogueMad2). Anyway, thanks for that welcome to wikipedia thing, because it gave me an idea to make RogueMad2's Nuclear Reaction Test. Just if you want to try it out, go to RogueMad2's Userpage and look for The Test. Thanks!

Help, Im new!

First, How do i start making a user talk page? Second, What's the point in having a emegerncy Button? Third, How do you get the leave me a message on the top of your page. Thanxx Dylias, Meow? (talk) 00:49, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

(from Dylias, Meow? (talk · contribs)

 • 0thly, please remember to 'sign' your messages, by putting ~~~~ on the end. This will add you user name, and the date/time.
 • 1stly, your user page is a wiki page like any other; click user:Dylias, Meow?, and edit away. Tell us everything about yourself, or nothing; the choice is yours. Perhaps put a picture, - for example, if you put on a line on its own, and it will display the pic shown here. To find suitable pics, try Mayflower.
 • 2ndly, the emergency button is only for use in extreme circumstances; please do not press it.

Welcome to the madhouse; please say hello

Oh yes right, Thnx Now another question, Sorry for the annoyance, How do i get a infobox suitable for just myself? And how do i find a good article to edit.Dylias, Meow? (talk) 01:08, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

No annoyance involved, at all. Please - ask as much as you like.
To make a custom infobox, you could put, for example;

This would look like;
Chzz This user is a fan of Chzz

Finding articles to edit
Depends what kind of thing you mean - I assume you don't mean Good Articles?
You might be interested in the cleanup campaign, or helping out with peer reviews. You could browse the many projects, look at the newest articles, or maybe just something random. We have a list of requested articles, requests for feedback, and a huge backlog of tasks.
Hopefully, this will give you some ideas. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  20:28, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials; short answer, but not much point my repeating - everything is covered there.  Chzz  ►  16:04, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Photo deletion

The problem is WP:NFCC2. The photo is a recent photo by a photo agency. They take those photos specifically so people will pay them to use the photos to illustrate things. We can't just use the photo and not pay them - it's directly in competition with the commercial motive behind taking the photo. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:20, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Have you tried looking for a government photo of the goat? You would think one exists somewhere... That would be a much stronger case for fair use. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:21, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
I just found a flickr photo that seems to be of this goat. I added it to the article. Hope you can confirm that it's the right one. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:29, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
The photo was in a daily paper on 20 May - therefore I cannot see why it is "likely to replace the original market role".
I have searched hard; I have contacted the British MoD media people, and the Royal Welsh. I will somehow obtain a photo of him in Whipsnade - if necessary I will go and take one myself.
The problem still remains though, that the only depiction of him in that unique attire at the retirement is non-free, so I'd still like to argue the case for including the pic. Please let me know your further thoughts, many thanks,  Chzz  ►  22:30, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Have now seen the pic you added; yep, looks good. It is fairly likely to be William - hard to tell; there are other goats in the Royal Welsh - one for each of the 3 divisions, I believe. But the silver head plaque makes it likely, I feel. I'll try and check that more.
Many thanks for your efforts to help out. I still stand by the above, though, regarding the specific retirement pagent...  Chzz  ►  22:34, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm glad you like the new photo. As for the old one, it's a Reuters photo, which is basically disqualifying. Reuters licenses their photos for money. That's what they're in the business of doing. Just because it's a week old doesn't mean it doesn't have any value! This photo fails WP:NFCC2, and we cannot use it. (One exception to the Reuters rule might be to comment on the photo itself, but that's not what's going on here.) The ceremonial garb is not important enough to use any nonfree photo in my mind, even if we could find a non-free photo that didn't fail automatically on NFCC2 like this one does. FYI there is another goat photo probably of William here, though it is marked copyrighted. If you like this one better you could request that the flickr user change the licensing. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:39, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Oh and also this photo by the same author. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:42, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm emailing them now, thanks again. I'm still hazy on the fair-use thing, but I know it is complex. Hey ho.  Chzz  ►  22:50, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

THanks - do need help

Hi Chzz! Thanks for the message. I am actually stuck on something. I have edited a few errors on a page (subject well-known to me) and want to change an unsuitable reference for a peer-reviewed published article. I am just not sure how to enter the data. Can you help? WikiGeneticistWikigeneticist (talk) 16:42, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi there! I'll do my best to help. Editing existing references - well, you've certainly jumped in at the deep end there, but I'll try to explain - bear with me;

(1) Simple references require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.

He likes tea.
b) A section called "References" with the special code "reflist";
References
reflist
(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)
To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Wikigeneticist/reftest and try it out.

2) Named references;

Chzz was born in 1837, in Footown.
Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

3) Citation templates;

You can put anything you like between , but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;
Chzz has 37 Olympic medals.
Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.
For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.
Now - hopefully this will make sense, and you'll be able to understand how such things work in the articles - and hence be able to change them. Please have a play in your user space (per my welcome message), and then, by all means, have a go at fixing things. Be bold, it can always be undone.
For more help, you can either;
 • Leave another message here; OR
 • Use a helpme - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put helpme, and ask your question; OR
 • Talk to us live, with this or this.
Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  18:45, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Help

You should be an admin, you're very helpful. Anyway, can you please tell me when it's proper to archive items on my talk page? In other words, can I archive any of the conversations on my current talk page, since they are in the past/completed? --Jklein212 (talk) 03:19, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words;
Archiving of talks- it is entirely up to you. There are many ways to deal with it; personally, I've set mine up to archive ever thread over nn hours old (about 100, I think). See WP:ARCHIVE, and if you can't get it working (it is a bit weird), just ask me again and I'll set it up for you.  Chzz  ►  05:54, 25 May 2009 (UTC)4

Connecting to Wikipedia (IRC) chat

Hi Chzz. I've got a couple of questions: 1) Now I've missed my TV program, I decided to go back and work on the Valle de Chalco article. But I realized there is a lot of useful info in the Xico article. I'm not allowed to just copy and paste that info, right? I need to get permission from the person(s) who wrote it. How do I identify that person or persons? 2) I wanted to log on to IRC to see if I could get some help on that, but realized that I absolutely do not know how to get to IRC. (I can't recall how I got there earlier this evening, but however I did, it was by accident.) Can you help me out there? By the way, what country do you live in? Thanks. a) Copy it, paste it, and use the references. If it is not referenced, don't use it; find your own sources

hi Chzz

Thanks for the welcome message.

Before I get started on to editing/creating articles, I need few tips on writing wiki scripts like text formatting tips. Also, can individual blogs be used as references? What are the sources which cannot be termed as reliable references?

Please reply to these queries or provide me some link where I can find answers to these.

Atul peerless (talk) 10:01, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

The Wikipedia:Tutorial will take you thorough the basics of editing.
Almost all blogs are not reliable sources. The exceptions are very well-known blogs written by experts in their field. For details on what is and isn't a reliable source, see WP:RS. You might also be interested in verifiability and notability. If you are thinking of using a source, but you are not sure if it is OK, please ask.

For your welcome messages

Hey Chzz, What do you use to welcome new users quickly? (feel free to answer on my talk page & delete if you want!) dottydotdot (talk) 10:58, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

The template is in user:chzz/w.

I suggest you look on Google; there are tonnes of intro to HTML guides.
With regards to an article - Wikipedia probably isn't the best place for that kind of thing, because Wikipedia is not a manual, guidebook, or textbook. You might have more success over on wikiHow; their homepage is http://www.wikihow.com/

Thank you for your message Chzz. I don't think Campbellgirl reads either her own Talk page (talk) or the discussion page for "The Takeaway." If you look at Campbellgirl's talk file you will see that she has inserted several PRI press releases into Wikipedia articles, and her warning for deletion also had to do with a radio program. I don't think it is simply my jaundiced perspective, there are people trying to suppress any sort of realistic view of this program, and these are mostly people with something to gain from its success. If you can find a way to discuss this with her I would appreciate your trying, since I don't think she will respond to me through either of the avenues you mention. I already had an entire subhead on the discussion page for "The Takeaway" talking about Campbellgirl and her previous vandalism of the page. I appreciate your willingness to help out here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Affenbart (talkcontribs) 19:25, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Affenbart (talk) 19:25, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Control click

Do you know how to get that to go away? On my user page, when I look at it, by all the links with the little numbers on them, in front of it says control click. It has driven me nuts trying to figure this out! --Abce2|AccessDenied 19:27, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Hmm. Well, it's not really anything to do with Wikipedia, I don't think. It must be something that you are doing when you're making the external links. What kind of system are you using? What browser?
It is something to do with the way you are making those external links to diffs/pages. If you just typed in;

here

It would display as;
here
Are you using some kind of tool to create the links, or copying them from somewhere, or what?
If possible, please talk to us live, with this or this.  Chzz  ►  20:11, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

I was just copying from the adress bar. It was working fine until recently. Acually, it started after I was messing around with the preferences, but I've unchecked everything but (exepet things that I had before, i.e. Twinkle) and it was still there. --Abce2|AccessDenied 20:39, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, my knowledge of HTML coding is minimal to non-existant. -- The Red Pen of Doom 21:20, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
Abce2, when you added the above comment, you also wrote the "CTRL-Click" stuff all over this page, too. See this diff. It looks like something on your machine is adding (Ctrl-click)"> to every external link on the pages that you edit. This must be some kind of add-on that you have installed; some editor, some widget, some browser add-on, etc.
Whatever it is, please get it sorted out, and be extremely careful with all of your editing at the moment.
I hope that you get it fixed. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  16:58, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed that on the 3G page it asks for additional references but there are already 11. I have a reputable reference I'd like to add but don't know if I should since there are so many already. Denise Lukas (talk) 20:00, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi Denise, Sorry to bump in, but you could add a reference to anything that is unreferenced. When it comes to references, it is rarly harmfull to have too many, and on 3G I see lots of things that could be referenced. Just a random line I picked up: "The first pre-commercial demonstration network in the southern hemisphere was built in Adelaide, South Australia by m.Net Corporation in February 2002 using UMTS on 2100 MHz.". If you have a ref for that, great! If you have a ref for anything else that doesn't have a reference yet, great! just go ahead and reference the proverbial hell out of the article! Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:15, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
I agree with the above. It is difficult to have 'too many references'. If you look at some of the featured articles, you'll see that every little fact is referenced. Hence - please add them. If you want help on how to make them look pretty, see user:chzz/help/refs. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  23:34, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Help request re. Bob1ob123

Hi Chzz

I was only trying to help Bob1ob123 as the user seemed to be having problems with their own page "Potts Theory" about to be deleted, and not adding the "help me" template correctly on his talk page but on his article page.

the user then started to then reproduce his own research on the dyslexia page 3 times at the last count almost spam, now if this is a new user error then i do not want to get the user into trouble especially if they have a form of dyslexia and have problems following instructions and sully understanding new environments

So - thank you very much for shouting for help when needed, please do that at any time. Before you welcome a new user do you check to see if they have made a useful contribution? Do you really think that Snakesofboingotopia should be encouraged? And they are by no means the first dubious account that I have seen you welcome. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 16:56, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for the alert. Personally, yes, I absolutely do think that users like that should be welcomed. I see the fake article, and I see the comment it contains, "This page consists of fabricated public domain materials and all references to any real human or pre-existing television show, whether the people be living or dead, are purely and accidentally coincidental.". If we WP:AGF we can say this is a test-edit of some kind, and a user in need of guidance. Maybe not, time will tell, but I'd much rather try and turn them into a useful contributor; if they only get a nasty warning box, they're unlikely to change their ways.
No, indeed, I haven't checked the contributions; if I did, I would not be able to welcome so many. I feel that the pay-off between perhaps accidentally 'welcoming' a vandal user is worthwhile in terms of helping/welcoming true users. Many new joiners have popped into the IRC channel, and been talked through the basics - this has proved to be a very effective way of getting people into good practice and making useful contributions in a short timespan.
I leave the warning, blocking an etc to others; I'm doing my best to make new users welcome, and teach them the rudiments of Wikipedia policy and editing.
If you really do feel that this is not a worthwhile goal, then please do respond further; I am always open to criticism, and quite prepared to change my ways.
Best,  Chzz  ►  18:20, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

You are possibly doing a useful job to counteract newbie-biters like me. But please look at a new user's contributions and take the time to comment as appropriate. I have just looked at Bryceegan9710 - did you really think their contribution was appropriate? — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 18:33, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

If you mean this, then yes, I do. If it was something else, deleted, then I can't see it.  Chzz  ►  15:02, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

No, I mean the article now deleted. But how on earth can you think User:Bryceegan9710 is a useful contribution to Wikipedia? I am also disappointed to see you give an unqualified welcome to MichelleSommer. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 21:57, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

 • Bryceegan9710 (talk · contribs) - as I said before, all I can see is one contrib, which looks constructive - ie that chart thing on their user page. I am not an admin, and therefore cannot see any possible deleted contributions.
 • MichelleSommer (talk · contribs) - I see absolutely nothing wrong there, either. I see a new user who doesn't know how to edit. If they make contact with me soon, then I may well be able to help them become a valuable contributor. "I'm new to this but I have a lot of information about vitamins" - sounds like someone who could be very useful to the project.
Please - have a scroll up and down this page. You will see lots of questions from lots of new users who appear keen to make Wikipedia better. If I had not welcomed them, I think that several would have 'given up'. Do you not think that this is beneficial to the project?  Chzz  ►  22:04, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Welcoming users

Please check that the users you are welcoming are not indef blocked. Your message here was placed over an hour after the user was blocked. Nakon 21:29, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Why was there no notification of the block on their talk page?  Chzz  ►  23:33, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
Because there was no need to place one. The editor will get a block message when they try to edit. Nakon 01:01, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Great. No harm done there then?  Chzz  ►  06:05, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Edit: In fact, I see now that in the Wikipedia:Blocking policy it says, "Administrators should also notify users when blocking them by leaving a message on their user talk page unless they have a good reason not to."
Was there a good reason in this specific case, or was it just a mistake? Let me know, thanks.  Chzz  ►  17:13, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

(This thread was continued over on User_talk:Nakon#RE:_My_Signature; I have copied it over here to keep the thread  Chzz  ►  15:29, 27 May 2009 (UTC))

I don't leave block tags for obvious blatant vandals. Nakon 21:14, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, in future, please could you do so, per policy; "Administrators should also notify users when blocking them by leaving a message on their user talk page unless they have a good reason not to.".
Thanks,  Chzz  ►  15:29, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
"Blatant vandal" qualifies as a good reason not to. Миша13 15:52, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
I disagree. If another user comes to use that IP address, I think that they will see MediaWiki:Blockedtext. I think that that message is rather confusing, complex, and does not have a clear link to make an unblock request. In addition, there is the problem experienced here - where others may not notice that the account has been blocked. The policy seems clear to me; as a non-administrator I am unable to look at the specific contributions in this case, so - if there is some 'good reason' to not use a notice that I am unaware of, then I can accept that - but otherwise, I'd like to see the policy followed. If you disagree with the policy itself, or do not agree with my interpretation of the wording, then can we discuss it in Wikipedia talk:Blocking policy? Let me know. Thanks for the input.  Chzz  ►  15:59, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
The blockedtext is not confusing, it just requires a skill of reading comprehension (a helpful skill when authoring an encyclopedia, if I may say so). All options are explained under "What do I do now?" There are no "specific contributions" that you can't see in this case. You could just examine the publicly visible ones to see that something's fishy and the block log shows that the user is blocked. You should have examined all those if you genuinely wanted to welcome a new user (slapping boilerplate text in the blind doesn't make much sense). As I said, blatant vandalism is a good reason (with regard to your own quotation from the policy), but if you disagree on that then I cbf to discuss this further. Миша13 16:41, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
 • A blatant vandal blocked swiftly (with talk page priveleges disallowed) doesn't need a blocking template. They also don't need a welcome message... And some admins might redlink their talk page immediately per CAT:TEMP if they've received warnings already. –xenotalk 16:56, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Don’t you think that the current rating of ‘Shivaji’ is lower than what it should be. Adequate inline citatons have now been provided and the article is suppported by a good number of references. Please see if the article can be promoted to a higher class. If not, then kindly suggest the changes that can be made to the article. Thanks Kesangh (talk) 17:19, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I had a quick look, and it does look quite good. I suggest you ask for a peer review, and then perhaps go for a good article nomination. I will try to look at it further (as time permits). Cheers, 10:47, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
