Request for help with Brian Hioe article
Hi Chongkian, I notice you've been editing on Sunflower Student Movement, and am wondering if you're able to help. A couple of days ago, I started an article on Brian Hioe, founding editor of New Bloom Magazine, however his page has already been nominated for WP:AfD. I have had trouble locating references in English. I am requesting help from any editors I can think of, who might have knowledge in this area, and possibly also knowledge of Chinese language (which I am unable to read or speak) sources. (BTW, assuming you think he is notable enough to justify a page of course). Cheers MatthewTStone (talk) 07:49, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hi MatthewTStone! Yeah, I understand the frustrating feeling once your article got nominated for deletion due to lack of content. Even I had 13 articles deleted so far due to insufficient references and notability (in which sometimes it is really subjective to each people/nationality/country size). I'll try to see here on what I can do to help out ;) Chongkian (talk) 07:52, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, I am just finding out, as this is the second time WP:AfD has happened to me this week...! And I agree it is quite subjective. From what I can tell, Hioe is a young guy and new in the media landscape, but he and New Bloom are quite important, as part of a changing political scene. But for people outside Taiwan, it is hard to appreciate why. I am wondering whether New Bloom should have its own page, or should it be part of his article. MatthewTStone (talk) 19:14, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
- PS the article has now been moved into WP:Draftspace at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Brian_Hioe so that leaves a bit of breathing space. MatthewTStone (talk) 22:27, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
- I've tried to search from Chinese sources, and the reason is actually correct. It's not that the person doesn't have any source, but instead most of the source is never about the person themselves, but the works of that person. Even when I try to search the English and Chinese name, it gives two different person picture (one is male and the other is female respectively). Have you confirm that the English name and the Chinese name is correct? Thanks. Chongkian (talk) 00:08, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- Good question. I took the Chinese name from his editorial page at New Bloom <https://newbloommag.net/author/brian-hioe/>. I assumed this would be correct? MatthewTStone (talk) 02:44, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Help for including Sunway to WikiProject Malaysia's scope
Hi there,
I'm currently working in Sunway Berhad (Malaysia) and we're currently working on getting information out about our company and affiliated entities in a fair and balanced manner. As such, we feel that it's important that we can cooperate with the community that watches over Malaysian wiki pages. On that token, I'm in doubt as to how I can request for our Wikipedia pages to be within the scope of WikiProject Malaysia, as they is currently not listed under the WikiProject (other than one of our subsidiaries 'Sunway City Ipoh').
Could you help guide me on this? Thanks! --Sesd17 (talk) 07:09, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Sesd17,
Thanks for your interest in the efforts of integrating private business sectors (Sunway Bhd.) with WikiProject Malaysia. Do you have any email where I can contact you to discuss this further?

Fire Services Museum, Macau
I have moved the page Fire Services Museum, as this is a generic name not unique to this Museum, e.g.Fire Services Museum of Victoria. Please add to the page Fire museum if you are aware of any other such museums in China or elsewhere.Chemical Engineer (talk) 16:21, 18 February 2017 (UTC)

Do you invite Bahasa Melayu Wikipedia users for your meetup?
Just curiosity, do you invite users at Bahasa Melayu Wikipedia every time you held a meetup? Even though I'm not active in Malay Wikipedia (I was considering to be active so I can improve my Malay since mine is not as good :p), I may go create/expand the meetup page (ms:Wikipedia:Perjumpaan) if I got spare time to do so. You can notify the bureaucrat Yosri for assist or help. Cheers! NgYShung huh? 08:16, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
- Initially we even put at the top of the main page ('banner' area?) of ms.wikipedia.org for the very first Wikipedia Malaysia meetup. But it seems like it gives very little effect. Besides, there is no dedicated meetup page for ms.wikipedia.org. Maybe we can create one and can always link both the en & ms page for any Wikipedia Malaysia meetup in the future.Chongkian (talk) 08:23, 5 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Please support the Sustainability Initiative!
Hi, Chongkian! Please allow me to follow up on a project that was discussed at the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin a couple of weeks ago:
I am writing you to ask for your support for the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 250 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.
The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has recently passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Now, we are working with the Wikimedia Foundation staff to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.
In order to demonstrate that this is an issue that the community really cares about, I would like to ask you to sign the project page as well. Thank you! --Gnom (talk) 16:21, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Tamsui Art Gallery
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Tamsui Art Gallery, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Redhat101 Talk 03:01, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

An editor nominated an article of yours for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Luerhmen History and Culture Museum. SL93 (talk) 16:53, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot. I've tried to defend by my all means at the talk page there, lol. Chongkian (talk) 01:16, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Someone took out a whole chunk of history that I put in. Please advise. Thank you.
- While I have nothing against people expanding an article (in which why I did not take out your writing portion), from my point of view, this article is about the building itself (not the government entity), thus we should focus only on that particular building, not any building used as the predecessor to house the central government of Penang. If this article is about Penang State Government, then we can talk on the building that houses the government, and even former buildings which housed it. Also, the historical section that you've written is far too long compared to other section of the article. If history section were to be made long, then the (for example) architecture, budget/finance, maintenance, structural design, tourism-related facilities, any event/incident to/at the building etc must be made 'equally' long as well. Your writing has too many citation/quotes, in which those parts can be written in Wikiquote, not in Wikipedia. Also your writing has very few links to other Wikipedia article, in which you might want to add that. Chongkian (talk) 00:33, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
As written it is confusing since before 1st January 1957 this building was called Town Hall which also refers to another earlier building. Furthermore the article is called City Hall rather than City Hall Building. But if no one is concerned about the confusion brought about by grammar, then let it be. jefferyseow (talk)
Malacca/Melaka
It looks like you are busy trying to make wholesale changes to wikipedia articles on the use of the name. Please note that it is not the policy of Wikipedia to change name in its articles when there is an official name change per WP:MODERNPLACENAME. Wikipedia is not a government publication. It changes only when that official name has become the standard form in English usage. Hzh (talk) 10:08, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- There has been several name changes in Malaysia lately which was made officially (by the royal/state/local government), such as Kulai from previously Kulaijaya, Iskandar Puteri from previously Nusajaya. They were all announced by the government, and the name change took immediate effect, in which all (for example) road sign, gov website/publications use that new name. Of course redirect will always be maintained to the old name to give people the 'transition' period to familiarize the new name. But once the name has been changed, it is a new name. It's not that I want to 'spam' around in Wikipedia, no. Even previously, I had made many articles about Malacca/Melaka in which I used the word 'Malacca', but after the name change announcement, then I've changed all of the articles to 'Melaka' (indeed it is a lot of works to be done). For the case of Malacca/Melaka, is there any official definition on when that "name has become the standard form in English usage" ? Thanks. Chongkian (talk) 00:19, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
- What is done with other instances is irrelevant, i.e. if other people make mistakes in their edits, you don't follow them. It can also be that other instances are not directly relevant, since Malacca is common usage (and widely used in other geographical names or names of other entities), whereas your other examples are not, therefore any change is of little relevance to the casual readers. We follow Wikipedia guidelines, not other people people's ignorance of them. I have already given you the link that suggests what you can check to indicate is the common usage. Read it. An example is Burma which was changed to Myanmar, although many English sources still use Burma, Myanmar is now commonly used enough in various publications, for example [1]. In the case of Malacca/Melaka, Melaka is already being used in some English sources, therefore it is not that urgent an issue, although you would still need to show that it is much more common that it is now to change the article name of Malacca. These things usually take a few years to take effect, so wait a while and see. Hzh (talk) 09:12, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
- A further thing to note that is that if you want to change the title of a page, you should also indicate in the lead what the older name is (usually in the first sentence), this is to avoid confusion to readers who are unaware of any name change. See again Myanmar, and also WP:ALTNAME. Hzh (talk) 09:26, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:1941 establishments in Malaya
A tag has been placed on Category:1941 establishments in Malaya requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

The right way to move/merge categories
Please don't just remove categories and then blank the categories if you want to try and move/merge categories. The right way to do it is via WP:Categories for discussion - which has the big advantage that the process is automated if you go that route. I have some sympathy with what you were trying to do earlier today, but you should still seek a consensus for category moves/merges rather than just being WP:BOLD.Le Deluge (talk) 21:26, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
Jamek Mosque
I have no idea why you feel the need to keep changing title of articles to the latest. Wikipedia is not a newspaper or any official organisation in Malaysia. We use what is normally used, not what has just been changed. You can note in the first sentence what the official name is, but why change the title into one that few people know about? Please stop doing that. Please note the Wikipedia guidelines on use of common names per WP:COMMONNAME and also note how to proceed when name has changed per WP:NAMECHANGES. Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent at Missing articles. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:33, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!
Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!
If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.
Thank you!

- Hi Chongkian. Thank you for your articles on Jut Art Museum and Sabah Art Gallery, they are a valuable contribution to the free encyclopedia and to the general Wikipedia Asian Month contest. However, the rules of the supported sub-contest covers Asian artwork types, that can be illustrated by Met CC0 image release, so that doesn't include museums themselves in Asia. If there is a particular Asian artwork type or genre or period of history that you are interested in, I'll be glad to help research images and publications from Met resources to help fill it out.--Pharos (talk) 14:58, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

- I did tried to write some (female in red, art), but apparently the female articles were all too short to quality, and the art articles was supposed to be articles about art itself, while what I wrote was about art galleries/museums (the venues, not the type of art).
