Note about request
Thanks for the comment but I am aware of WP:OWN. I was just politely requesting that no one edit it without at least checking with me first. I am glad however that you are making sure people are observing the policies. On the subject of the actual templates, what do you think? Regards, Gaelen S.Talk • Contribs 03:10, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- No worries; I was just pointing it out, not warning you or anything. It's better if you give it in milder terms rather than asking permission, because not everyone takes kindly to that kind of thing :) I'll comment on the templates there later on. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 03:27, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestion. I will go ahead and take it into account and change the question to one that is less confrontational.

Anti-vandalism work
Hi Chamal N, just a heads up - don't forget to check the history for previous vandalism before you revert a change, otherwise you may be masking previous unconstructive edits. The history of the SK Sigma Olomouc page would show that there is a lot of vandalism occurring, so please make sure you just have a quick look at the previous edits too. Keep up the good work! --Cpl Syx (talk) 12:29, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, you're right. This is not highlighted in huggle so I missed that part. My fault, thanks for pointing it out. BTW, these IPs seem to have been vandalising that page for almost two hours now. Maybe you should consider about getting it protected? ≈ Chamal talk 12:36, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
- I've just filled in a request WP:RPP, just hope it doesn't take too long! :) --Cpl Syx (talk) 12:42, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Tamil version of Lankan National anthem
Hi friends. I want to Know is there any Tamil version of Sri Lankan National anthem. --BlueLankan 00:06, 8 August 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by BlueLankan (talk • contribs)
- I don't think so. What you get in books etc (I remember the school text books) is the sinhala pronunciation in tamil and english. See the constitution, where it says the national anthem is "Sri Lanka Matha". ≈ Chamal talk 05:00, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
- No,there is an official tamil version of National anthem, called 'Sri Lanka Thaye'. Pasanbhathiya2 (talk) 08:13, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- Really? I have never heard that. Can you provide a reference for this? ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 08:49, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Chamal, presently I can't give you a reliable reference on the net. I'll search for one. Anyhow, I know that, because nowadays "Sri lanka Thaye" is being printed on the text books. I hope this action took place, not in the recent history. It's rather old. Give me some time to find it on the net. BTW Keep up the Gud work. With regardsPasanbhathiya2 (talk) 12:54, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I believe you are right. See this article on Sunday Observer. I guess the government has not put that up on their sites yet. Thanks for the information, and happy editing :) ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 13:03, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Ane Chamal, you've been messing all around the net, but hasn't seen Sri Lanka Matha on the very page in Wikipedia. It has some information about that. With regards, Pasanbhathiya2 (talk) 13:28, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yes but that one is unsourced. I thought that was just a translation. I didn't know an official version was there. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 13:30, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
User:65.103.28.57
I just noticed the warning you issued to User:65.103.28.57 regarding his vandalism of my UserPage, and I thank you for taking that action. After warning him twice, I had lodged a complaint regarding his vandalism with AIV, but it was declined due to insufficient vandalism to warrant blocking. Although I am unconcerned by the nature of his threats in this case, I would like to know, for my future reference, if Wikipedia has a separate procedure for reporting such "legal threats". Please feel free to contact me on my UserTalk page with any additional information pertaining to this matter. --TommyBoy (talk) 11:10, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Help
Hello Chamal, this new editor is vandalising the history of Sri Lanka page be removing information [1] that is necessary to the section, I reverted his vandalism, but he keeps on reverting it back and has been threatening to block me so I explained why I reverted his revision in Talk:History of Sri Lanka, he has not replied but reverted it back again. His next edits looked like personal attacks, including adding my name to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism [2] stating nothing about my reversion but claiming my edit was highly racist and offensive in nature which it is not, and vandalizing my user page [3] threatening to block me. Could you revert this edit and tell him to leave the history of Sri Lanka page alone until he decides to add constructive edits. Thank you--Blackknight12 (talk) 04:59, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Warning templates
|
- The reason he has given for removing information from the article is that it is unsourced. According to Wikipedia guidelines, what he is doing is not wrong. The best thing to do is to add a reference to this part. As for plain vandalism or intentionally disruptive edits, warn them after reverting. You can report vandals at WP:AIV or if they are editing disruptively in some other way (like persistently adding false info etc), report at WP:ANI. Or you can contact one of the admins listed at WP:SLR if there's a problem at one of those articles and if you need some help or advise with it. However the first step should be, as I have said before, discussing with the other editor. Familiarize yourself with this process, mate. You're dealing in an area where such things are common and you have to know how to deal with them. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 13:48, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Looking behind the figures, some other interesting facts emerge. First, 84% of our promoted articles had successfully passed a Milhist A-Class Review before going on to FAC. Second, of the 29 Milhist articles that failed, less than half (41%) had had an A-Class Review. Third, the 97 Milhist articles accounted for 16% of all FACs submitted between January and July of this year. The clear lesson is that if you want a string of featured articles to your credit, you may find Milhist's A-class Review process to be of benefit to you! Roger Davies talk

History of Sri Lanka
Hi, recently a user created two page on the history of Sri Lanka, Pre Colonial era (500 BC - 1505 AD) and Post Colonial era (since 1948), although his/her edits were of good faith it has just created more confusion because he/she has separated Sri Lankan history into only two categories when it should be more and in specific periods. In the meantime I have sorted everything out and have created the following pages: Ancient history of Sri Lanka, Medieval history of Sri Lanka, Colonial history of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka in the twentieth century and Post conflict history of Sri Lanka. I have taken all the information from those two articles and have placed them into the new pages I created, so I am ask you if you could delete Pre Colonial era (500 BC - 1505 AD) and Post Colonial era (since 1948). Thanks--Blackknight12 (talk) 10:54, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
- No, I can't do that. If you want an article deleted, you have to take it to WP:AFD. An admin can't delete articles on request. I'm not sure if any of those articles are actually needed, but they can always be improved so I personally don't see a reason to delete any of them either. And please note that you can't simply copy material from another Wikipedia article, if that is what you have done. See here. ≈ Chamal Avast, landlubber! ¤ 17:59, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
- Ok thanks, I didn't know that, I will take it to WP:AFD. And with the new articles I did not copy material from other Wikipedia articles, I only moved them. Thanks--Blackknight12 (talk) 11:21, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Michael Lobo
How come an interview by Michael Lobo is copyrighted? Slumdog102 (talk) 11:50, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- There is only one article published on him. So, it's natural a lot of data would be taken from there.
- How is this copyright infringement. I have written this article in my own words.
- Hi. It's not the interview, but the material in that webpage that is copyrighted. The sentences in the article have been copied almost word to word from here, which clearly says that its material is copyrighted. Did you read the message I have left on your talk page? The links given there, including Wikipedia:Copyright violations, explain very clearly why the article is not acceptable in its current form. And please note that the notice on the page clearly instructs editors not to edit the page, which you have done. What you could do and how is also explained there, i.e make a non-copyvio version by following the link given. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 12:01, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- Please tally the sentences. Tell me how many sentences have been copied verbatim from source. You have also put the tag on almost the entire article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Slumdog102 (talk • contribs)
- Yes, I have. That is because as I said, the article is copied almost word to word from the source and you have done some minor rewordings. That still does not count as "your own words". I'm sure you have contributed to this article in good faith, but the problem is, that is still not allowed (also see WP:PLAGIARISM). The problem is not with you, but with the content. Do not edit the article, because the copyvio bit has to be reviewed and deleted if necessary. Edit the subpage through the given link instead. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 12:10, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- The Literary career section has been written by me entirely in my own words from the interview and not from the material of the article. So, please do not extend the tag to it. Interviews and quotes by people cannot be copyrighted by any site. Slumdog102 (talk) 12:12, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- As I said on your talk page, the reviewing admin will decide that. If it is not a copyvio, it will not be removed. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 12:15, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. That's the reason I haven't removed the notice from the first 2 sections. The Literary career and the Lead has been written by me in my own words. Interviews cannot be copyrighted. Slumdog102 (talk) 12:18, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

- OK. Then how do you expect us to build the article. There's only and only 1 article published on him. This is about Michael Lobo's life. How can the site decide what we should publish here on his life. Ultimately, the site has taken data from Michael Lobo. Slumdog102 (talk) 12:31, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- I think this is not Plagiarism. The site has ultimately taken details from Michael Lobo. The ultimate copyright holder is Michael Lobo himself. I personally contacted Lobo on his E-mail. He has given me full permission to use the information. If you want the mail, I can send it. Slumdog102 (talk) 12:36, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- No, that's not the way it works. Copyright is a complicated thing, and I'm no expert. If this site has copied the material from a source by Lobo, then Lobo would be the copyright owner. Otherwise, daijiworld hold the copyright because it's the material that's copyrighted and not the information. If you have permission from Lobo, you should read WP:COPYREQ, and contact OTRS as instructed there. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 12:47, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- Please remove the copyright notice immediately. The information on the Daijiworld site has been taken ultimately from a biography DOC file sent by Michael Lobo to Daijiworld. I have the mail with the attached DOC file sent by Michael Lobo. Even when the images are verified by the OTRS team, the images are not deleted. Likewise, the copyright notice should be removed for now until verified by the OTRS team. They take a long time. Please forward me your E-mail ID so that I can mail you with the file. Please remove the notice. Slumdog102 (talk) 13:04, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Good call Chanel. Slumdog maybe working in good faith, but my understanding is that the text was sent by Michael to the web site and they printed it without change or checking it. If they did then its not a reliable source. If they did change it then they own the copyright of the changes. Either way we cannot use it immediately. Victuallers (talk) 14:02, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- Utter rubbish. Daijiworld is a very reputed news portal and has established editors and offices throughout the world. They have carried out fact-checking and the source is highly reliable. They have made some changes. But even I have made some changes in the article. I have not copied verbatim from source. The facts like Lobo attended this school/college (about Michael Lobo's life) cannot be held copyright by the site. Please note that the Lead/Literary career/Works/References has been written by me in my own words. They have been taken from the interview not from the material. So, that's not plagiarism. Slumdog102 (talk) 14:18, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- No, the copyvio notice should stay for now. There is no proof yet that what you say is true, and OTRS has to confirm that. Since the website says the material is copyrighted, we have to follow this procedure for now. If OTRS confirms this, then of course the material will not be removed. Please don't send the email to me; even if you did I can't do anything about it. Send it to OTRS, and they will respond as soon as possible. @Victuallers: it's Chamal, mate :) ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 14:22, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- Source says : Michael Lobo was born in Mangalore on September 12, 1953 at the ancestral home of the Bijai branch of the Lobo Prabhu family. He is the great-great grandson of Lawrence Lobo Prabhu (1805-83), a distinguished jurist of his time, and the donor of the site of St Aloysius College. His father, Camillo Lobo (1907-71), was an engineering graduate of Imperial College, London, who later joined the British-Indian army, and served with distinction in Egypt and Italy during World War II.
Article says : Michael Lobo was born on September 12, 1953 in Mangalore to Maisie Lobo (née Fernandes) and Camillo Lobo, both of Mangalorean Catholic origin. Michael's father was an engineering graduate of Imperial College, London, who later joined the British-Indian army, and served with distinction in Egypt and Italy during World War II. Michael's mother's family had migrated to Kallianpur (near Mangalore) from Divarde, Goa in 1740. Michael's great grandfather Lawrence Lobo was a distinguished jurist of his time and the donor of the site of St. Aloysius College in Mangalore.
Is this plagiarism? How can ordinary facts of Michael Lobo's life like being born here/visiting this school/father/mother be copyrighted? I have never copied verbatim word to word from source. You can compare both. I hope you are understanding Slumdog102 (talk) 14:24, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- I hope Chamal does not mind but I will answer this. I have also placed this reply at User talk:Slumdog102 where this discussion can continue if needed -- so it doesn't usurp any more of Chamal's talk page. A review indicates the article was correctly tagged for copyright infringement. Some examples of text which are repeated almost verbatim from the original source are:

He was also interested in mountaineering, and underwent a course at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, passing with distinction.
