Hey dude
Thanks for the t-shirt; I want it delivered first-class, okay? ;-) Also, many, many thanks for being my good friend over all these months. Hope school and life is going great, —Ed (talk • contribs) 20:26, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- Sure Ed, it's on the way. But remember that if you don't get it, it'll be because the US postal service sucks and not because I haven't sent it ;) Real life is going just fine (hope yours is too), and actually I've finished school. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 07:38, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hey, our postal service is quite good, thank you. :-) RL is okay for me; I'm still procrastinating homework this year, but the difference is that it's not Wikipedia's fault (entirely). Instead, I've been doing a bunch of stuff, like ultimate frisbee and flag football with people from my residence hall. Quite fun, but that + Wikipedia + other things (for example, really trying to get a certain girl to like you ;) have sucked my time away from what I really should be doing, homework. Oh well. You're done with school? Are you going on to university? —Ed (talk • contribs) 05:38, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter : XLIII (September 2009)
| |||
Greetings to all members of the Military history WikiProject, and to those outside the project who receive this news letter as well! My name is TomStar81, and it with a great sense of pride that I assume the position of lead coordinator for the project. On behalf of all the coordinators, both new and returning, we wish to thank those of you who participated in the September elections, and we look forward to working to advance the goals of the project for the next six months. With the elections concluded, there are two changes. First, Roger Davies has been appointed a coordinator emeritus, joining our first coordinator emeritus Kirill Lokshin. Secondly, for the first time ever, the lead coordinator for the Military history WikiProject will be taking a lengthy wikibreak. For those who were unaware of this, I am an undergraduate student, and will be taking a leave of absence, effective end September, to focus on graduating in December. However, with fourteen coordinators, and two coordinators emeritus, I am confident the needs of the project will be well taken care of. For the VIII coordinator tranche, TomStar81 (Talk) |

Hello
Hello Chamal N, I noticed that I was mentioned here ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents ) under the title of "Disputed Removal of Rollback". I am currently involved in a dispute about the John Atanasoff article. I believe there is evidence that some users have made biased and indeed prejudiced remarks. I also think the use of double standards. However, since I have a personal connection to the topic therein, I cannot claim to be 100% objective either and therefore my conclusions and interpretations may be partially incorrect. There is also a potentiality that all parties involved have committed errors of judgement and a compromise may be the best solution. Unfortunately though I have attempted to compromise, I feel that my efforts have thus far been neglected. That said, I am wondering if you can look through all the comments on this discussion page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:John_Vincent_Atanasoff ) and tell me what you think. I know there's a lot of material there, but I would truly appreciate it if you looked through it carefully when you have the time to do so. You seem to be a kind, intelligent and experienced Wikipedian. Furthermore, since the discussion is thus far dominated by people of Western descent, I believe that someone of your background will be able to observe the historical dynamics therein with maximal neutrality. I am seeking the truth, and through that truth I hope to stimulate a Wikipedia environment that is fair to all people of all ethnic descents. Thank you for your help and I wish you a good day.--Monshuai (talk) 08:36, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- Looking at the discussion, I have to agree with Alison's comments. Sorry, but I'm not going to get involved there, since I don't think it'll do any good at this stage. Maybe you guys should consider following dispute resolution. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 17:22, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- Chamal, I read the whole discussion form beginning to end and Monshuai does have very good points. Double standadrs are applied to that article. It is already known that John Atanasoff is the first Bulgarian American to invent a world changing invention.--Janelle4elle (talk) 00:04, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
- Then follow dispute resolution if you can't come to a compromise on the talk page. I'm not going to take sides on this. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 16:28, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
Flag biased article: Illegal immigration to the United States
Can you please flag this extremely biased article, the word usage is dehumanizing to our undocumented population. And how they present the information is leading towards a particular sentiment. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Citoyendumonde (talk • contribs)

Edits like [1], [2], [3] won't help much, and will only result in you being reverted and possibly blocked. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 17:18, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
checkuser ?
Thnk so? 8frÜitz has started editing on 4 October, a day after 23prootie was blocked. First edit was to T:TDYK, which is a bit unusual for a new editor. Even more interesting; all his edits to T:TDYK were to sections that 23prootie has been involved in in some way. I'm beginning to think a checkuser would be a good idea. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 13:49, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
- 23prootie has previously used different IPs, such as 122.53.101.148 and 194.213.52.82, to evade his/her block. It might be hard to check. --PFHLai (talk) 14:21, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Cricinfo doesn't provide an explanation for the + and why the stats may not be complete for balls bowled. CricketArchive however provides the raw figures without noting that there may be discrepancies there. Do you think it might be ok to just switch the ref to CricketArchive for those and leave it? I really don't know why the + would exist only for two bowlers and on looking at match scorecards, I wasn't able to figure that out either. cheers.-SpacemanSpiff 17:12, 23 October 2009 (UTC)- Scratch that, the reason is available if you go through the individual scorecards for all twenty games instead of reading the summary innings stats which I did initially. Thanks for accepting my DYK
Thanks for all your good work -- but right now for supporting the DYK for The Heartland Series. I figured it was a new article, for all intents and purposes. FWIW, the "blog" source for the ALT hook was a professional reporter's blog on his newspaper's website. U.S. newspapers are publishing fewer and fewer print pages, so increasingly content is being "published" online on the reporters' blogs. --Orlady (talk) 15:16, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Murali's wickets
I did the same for BBM sorting on List of India women ODI cricketers. using {{SortKey}}. For a 5/54, I used the following code: {{SortKey|05146|05}}, where the 05146 = first two digits from no of wickets and last three is equal to 200 minus runs conceded. Then the sorting goes per standard convention of performance rankings. If you do this, you might be able to consolidate both to one column -- {{SortKey|05146|5/54}}. cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 02:52, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the help :) I've fixed it now. Actually, I wanted it to be two columns so that it can be sorted both by runs conceded and number of wickets. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 08:28, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, yeah, the two columns help that way. These wikitables definitely don't like cricket scores though. I've struggled so much with getting those endashes to sort correctly. cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 04:31, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Answers to certain questions
Just wondering, what were your concerns to my answers of questions nos. 6 and 11 in my RFA? Sebwite (talk) 19:11, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Both your answers imply that you will put a lot of emphasis on your own opinion when making a decision about an AFD, especially the sentence "If my personal opinion were to delete, which will inevitably happen in some cases, I would go ahead and delete the article". Ideally, the closing admin's opinion should have nothing to do with the close whether it's a delete, keep or relisting. The closing admin's job is to weigh the arguments and determine consensus. Regardless of whether consensus is contrary to your opinion or with it, that should not affect your decision in any way. Others before me have explained that in their !votes, but I'll clarify my comment there if you want me to. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 05:12, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

5 wicket haul lists
Hi Chamal! Having reviewed your Murali list, I was inspired to do similar for Glenn McGrath. Quite why I know not, he was the scourge of English cricket for some years, but there you go. So, I have two cricket lists at FLC right now, one for McGrath's five-wicket hauls, and one for Adam Gilchrist's centuries. Any chance you'd consider reviewing either or both of them? Cheers. Request for unprotection Bad Romance
If I understand correctly you are admin who locked Bad Romance. I'm requesting you reconsider the semi-protection of this article. My view is that it's been protected incorrect because it's a highly viewed article having a high about of edits - leading to a over protective response, but given a quick review of the edits I feel the level of vandalism as a proportion of edits is not high enough to warrant protection and that WP:AGF is being overruled without justification. 2010 WikiCup Signups Reconfirmation!
To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.
It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:
- Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
- Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
- Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
- Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
- Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
- Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
- Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
- Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
- Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
- In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
If you have any final concerns about the WikiCup's rules and regulations, please ask them now, before the Cup begins to avoid last minute problems. You may come to the WikiCup's talk page, or any of the judge's user talk pages. We're looking forwards to a great 2010 WikiCup! Help with columns
Hi Chamal, I'm trying to make a section of an article have two columns, with the first column having a fixed width so it doesn't stretch when the window gets wider. I know how to make the section in two columns with {col-begin} and {col-break} (thanks to your help when you answered that question for another user!) but I can't figure out how to set a width for the first column. Is there a way? Thanks! -Cheeselouise (talk) 08:54, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- Hi. Glad to see you found it helpful, but it must have been quite some time ago. I can't remember when I answered a question about columns :P Anyway, the following should help you:
{{col-begin}} {{col-break|width=70%}} Text in first column. {{col-break|width=30%}} Text in second column. {{col-end}}
- You can add values like 400px instead of the percentages. But I'd use a table if I were you, since columns don't work in IE. It's only supported in Firefox and Safari AFAIK. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 12:34, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- Perfect! It works exactly as I was hoping it would, and it even works in Chrome and IE (I'm running IE7). I think the question you answered was from 2007 or so. "Climategate" full protection
Hey there. Thanks for trying to tackle this page. I was wondering if we could find an alternative to full protection given that this page his been on lock for over three weeks of the past month and a half. Could you look into temporarily blocking disruptive users and removing the full protect? Thanks.--Heyitspeter (talk) 21:15, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- Adding a tag would help (i.e., "Unbalanced"). Basically the article is in a bad place and won't change enough while it's protected.--Heyitspeter (talk) 21:50, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- There was a full scale edit war on that article, which hadn't stopped after several periods of protection earlier. If you're suggesting blocks, that would mean blocking pretty much everyone who had edited that article in the past few days. Without reaching a suitable agreement after a proper discussion, edit warring will start as soon as protection is lifted. I don't see how a tag would help (it's already there, btw); it's there for readers to know the article isn't NPOV, and I have never seen edit warriors being discouraged by them. You can ask for unprotection at WP:RFUP if you like, I don't have a problem with it if another admin thinks it's ok to unprotect. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 05:14, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow!
Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! Garden, iMatthew, J Milburn, and The ed17 19:17, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
